Abstract

The new scientific decade (2023-2032) of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) aims at searching for sustainable solutions to undesired water conditions - may it be too little, too much or too polluted. Many of the current issues originate from global change, while solutions to problems must embrace local understanding and context. The decade will explore the current water crises by searching for actionable knowledge within three themes: global and local interactions, sustainable solutions and innovative cross-cutting methods. We capitalise on previous IAHS Scientific Decades shaping a trilogy; from Hydrological Predictions (PUB) to Change and Interdisciplinarity (Panta Rhei) to Solutions (HELPING). The vision is to solve fundamental water-related environmental and societal problems by engaging with other disciplines and local stakeholders. The decade endorses mutual learning and co-creation to progress towards UN sustainable development goals. Hence, HELPING is a vehicle for putting science in action, driven by scientists working on local hydrology in coordination with local, regional, and global processes.

9. Hebben koeien met ketose een hypokaliemie?

Abstract

De voorgeschiedenis van koeien met klinische hypokaliëmie bestaat vaak uit ketose en de behandeling daarvan met glucocorticoïden (Peek et al. 2000, Coffer et al. 2006). Er zijn al meerdere onderzoeken gedaan naar wat het effect is van glucocorticoïden met een mineralocorticoïde werking, op de kaliumconcentratie in het bloed van koeien. Uit die onderzoeken bleek dat deze middelen de kaliumsecretie in de urine vergrootten, waardoor de kaliumconcentratie in het bloed van de koeien daalde (Peek et al. 2000, Coffer et al. 2006). Onduidelijk is wat de invloed van ketose op de kaliumconcentratie in het bloed van koeien is zonder dat de dieren zijn behandeld met glucocorticoïden. Een andere reden voor het ontstaan van hypokaliëmie bij koeien is namelijk een verminderde voeropname (Johns 2004). Een verminderde voeropname is één van de klinisch verschijnselen die worden gezien bij koeien met klinische ketose (Bossaert 2010). Om dit te onderzoeken zijn er twee onderzoeksvragen opgesteld. De eerste is de vraag of koeien met ketose een hypokaliëmie hebben en de tweede of als koeien met ketose een hypokaliëmie hebben, deze hypokaliëmie dan wordt veroorzaakt door een verminderde voeropname. Om de invloed van een verminderde voeropname te onderzoeken in de literatuur is er gekeken naar eerder uitgevoerde onderzoeken waarin stieren werden gevast. Er zijn resultaten waarin er geen associatie werd gevonden tussen het vasten en de kaliumconcentratie in het bloed van de stieren (Galyean, Lee & Hubbert 1981), maar ook resultaten waarbij het vasten wel van invloed was op de kaliumconcentratie in het bloed van de stieren. Daar daalde de kaliumconcentratie in het bloed wanneer de stieren werden gevast (Smith, Prior 1984). Verder is kalium nauw verbonden aan de zuur-base status van dieren, waardoor ook de zuur-base status van invloed kan zijn op de kaliumhuishouding (Reece 2004). Abstract

The new Scientific Decade 2013-2022 of IAHS, entitled "Panta Rhei-Everything Flows", is dedicated to research activities on change in hydrology and society. The purpose of Panta Rhei is to reach an improved interpretation of the processes governing the water cycle by focusing on their changing dynamics in connection with rapidly changing human systems. The practical aim is to improve our capability to make predictions of water resources dynamics to support sustainable societal development in a changing environment. The concept implies a focus on hydrological systems as a changing interface between environment and society, whose dynamics are essential to determine water security, human safety and development, and to set priorities for environmental management. The Scientific Decade 2013-2022 will devise innovative theoretical blueprints for the representation of processes including change and will focus on advanced monitoring and data analysis techniques. Interdisciplinarity will be sought by increased efforts to connect with the socio-economic sciences and geosciences in general. This paper presents a summary of the Science Plan of Panta Rhei, its targets, research questions and expected outcomes.; La décennie scientifique 2013–2022 de l’AISH est intitulée “Panta Rhei-Tout s’écoule” et est dédiée à des activités de recherche concernant la question du changement hydrologique et sociétal. La vocation de “Panta Rhei” est d’atteindre une meilleure compréhension des processus régissant le cycle de l’eau en se concentrant sur leur dynamique de changement, en lien avec les systèmes anthropiques qui changent eux–mêmes rapidement. L’objectif opérationnel est d’améliorer notre capacité à prévoir la dynamique des ressources en eau au service d’un développement sociétal durable dans un environnement changeant. Le concept implique une focalisation sur les systèmes hydrologiques vus comme une interface changeante entre environnement et société, dont les dynamiques sont essentielles à la sécurité hydrique, au développement humain, et au choix de priorités dans la gestion de l’environnement. La décennie scientifique 2013–2022 vise la conception de schémas théoriques innovants pour représenter les processus et leur évolution, et insistera sur les techniques avancées d’observation et d’analyse de données. On recherchera l’interdisciplinarité avec les sciences socio-économiques et les géosciences en général. Cet article présente une synthèse du programme scientifique “Panta Rhei”, ses objectifs, ses questions de recherche et les résultats que l’on en attend.
