Search

Probing spatially confined quantum states from afar - a long-sought goal to minimize external interference - has been proposed to be achievable in condensed matter systems via coherent projection. The latter can be tailored by sculpturing the eigenstates of the electron sea that surrounds the quantum state using atom-by-atom built cages, so-called quantum corrals. However, assuring the coherent nature of the projection, and manipulating its quantum composition, has remained an elusive goal. Here, we experimentally realize the coherent projection of a magnetic impurity-induced, Yu-Shiba-Rusinov quantum state using the eigenmodes of corrals on the surface of a superconductor, which enables us to manipulate the particle-hole composition of the projected state by tuning corral eigenmodes through the Fermi energy. Easy-plane quantum magnets are strikingly similar to superconductors, allowing for spin supercurrent and an effective superconducting phase stemming from their $U(1)$ rotation symmetry around the $z$-axis. We uncover a generalized fractional Josephson effect with a periodicity that increases linearly with system size in one-dimensional spin-$1/2$ chains at selected anisotropies and phase-fixing boundary fields. The effect combines arbitrary integer periodicities in a single system, exceeding the $4\pi $ and $8\pi $ periodicity of superconducting Josephson effects of Majorana zero modes and other exotic quasiparticles. We classify the magnetic ground states of a 2D lattice of localized magnetic moments which are coupled to a superconducting substrate with Rashba-spin-orbit coupling. We discover a rich magnetic phase diagram with surprisingly complex structures including 2q-spin-spirals, a 2x2-periodic pattern, and skyrmion lattices, self-consistently, using an effective classical spin Hamiltonian and show that the system hosts non-zero 4-spin interactions. Our in-depth analysis of about ten thousand magnetic configurations becomes feasible using contrastive clustering, a recent advanced unsupervised machine learning technique. This work proposes simple few-band systems for non-collinear magnetic states and stimulates further research on topological effects in their self-consistent electronic structure.

We study the dynamics of quantum skyrmions under a magnetic field gradient using neural network quantum states. First, we obtain a quantum skyrmion lattice ground state using variational Monte Carlo with a restricted Boltzmann machine as the variational ansatz for a quantum Heisenberg model with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Then, using the time-dependent variational principle, we study the real-time evolution of quantum skyrmions after a Hamiltonian quench with an inhomogeneous external magnetic field. We show that field gradients are an effective way of manipulating and moving quantum skyrmions. Furthermore, we demonstrate that quantum skyrmions can decay when interacting with each other. This work shows that neural network quantum states offer a promising way of studying the real-time evolution of quantum magnetic systems that are outside the realm of exact diagonalization., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Recently, large degeneracy based on product eigenstates has been found in spin ladders, Kagome-like lattices, and motif magnetism, connected to spin liquids, anyonic phases, and quantum scars. We unify these systems by a complete classification of product eigenstates of Heisenberg XXZ Hamiltonians with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on general graphs in the form of Kirchhoff rules for spin supercurrent. We propose controlling the hybridization between Majorana zero modes at the ends of magnetic adatom chains on superconductors by an additional magnetic adatom deposited close by. By tuning the additional adatom's magnetization, position, and coupling to the superconductor, we can couple and decouple the Majorana modes as well as control the ground state parity. The scheme is independent of microscopic details in ferromagnetic and helical magnetic chains on superconductors with and without spin-orbit coupling, which we show by studying their full microscopic models and their common low-energy description. Our results show that scanning tunneling microscopy and electron spin resonance techniques are promising tools for controlling the Majorana hybridization in magnetic adatoms-superconductor setups, providing a basis for Majorana parity measurements, fusion, and braiding techniques., Comment: Published version

We investigate the ground state properties of quantum skyrmions in a ferromagnet using variational Monte Carlo with the neural network quantum state as variational ansatz. We study the ground states of a two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg model in the presence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). We show that the ground state accommodates a quantum skyrmion for a large range of parameters, especially at large DMI. The spins in these quantum skyrmions are weakly entangled, and the entanglement increases with decreasing DMI. We also find that the central spin is completely disentangled from the rest of the lattice, establishing a non-destructive way of detecting this type of skyrmion by local magnetization measurements. While neural networks are well suited to detect weakly entangled skyrmions with large DMI, they struggle to describe skyrmions in the small DMI regime due to nearly degenerate ground states and strong entanglement. In this paper, we propose a method to identify this regime and a technique to alleviate the problem. Finally, we analyze the workings of the neural network and explore its limits by pruning. The flow of electric current through a two-dimensional material in a magnetic field gives rise to the family of Hall effects. The quantum versions of these effects accommodate robust electronic edge channels and fractional charges. Recently, the Hall effect of skyrmions, classical magnetic quasiparticles with a quantized topological charge, has been theoretically and experimentally reported, igniting ideas on a quantum version of this effect. To this end, we perform dynamical mean field theory calculations on localized $f$ electrons coupled to itinerant $c$ electrons in the presence of spin-orbit interaction and a magnetic field. Our calculations reveal localized nano quantum skyrmions that start moving transversally when a charge current in the itinerant electrons is applied. The results show the time-transient build-up of the quantum skyrmion Hall effect, accompanied by an Edelstein effect and a magnetoelectric effect that rotate the spins. This work motivates studies about the steady state of the quantum skyrmion Hall effect, looking for eventual quantum skyrmion edge channels and their transport properties., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

Topological magnetic structures are promising candidates for resilient information storage. An elementary example are spin helices in one-dimensional easy-plane quantum magnets. To quantify their stability, we numerically implement the stochastic Schr\"odinger equation and time-dependent perturbation theory for spin chains with fluctuating local magnetic fields. We find two classes of quantum spin helices that can reach and even exceed ground-state stability: Spin-current-maximizing helices and, for fine-tuned boundary conditions, the recently discovered "phantom helices". Beyond that, we show that the helicity itself (left- or right-rotating) is even more stable. We explain these findings by separated helical sectors and connect them to topological sectors in continuous spin systems. The resulting helical protection mechanism is a promising phenomenon towards stabilizing helical quantum structures, e.g., in ultracold atoms and solid state systems. Gapless materials in electronic contact with superconductors acquire proximity-induced superconductivity in a region near the interface. Numerous proposals build on this addition of electron pairing to originally non-superconducting systems like ferromagnets and predict intriguing quantum phases of matter, including topological-, odd-frequency-, or nodal-point superconductivity. However, atomic-scale experimental investigations of the microscopic mechanisms leading to proximity-induced Cooper pairing in surface or interface states are missing. Here, we investigate the most miniature example of the proximity effect on only a single quantum level of a surface state confined in a quantum corral on a superconducting substrate, built atom-by-atom by a scanning tunneling microscope. Whenever an eigenmode of the corral is pitched close to the Fermi energy by adjusting the corral's size, a pair of particle-hole symmetric states enters the superconductor's gap. We identify the in-gap states as scattering resonances theoretically predicted 50 years ago by Machida and Shibata, which had so far eluded detection. We further show that the observed anticrossings of the in-gap states indicate proximity-induced pairing in the quantum corral's eigenmodes. Our results have direct consequences on the interpretation of in-gap states in unconventional or topological superconductors, corroborate concepts to induce superconductivity into a single quantum level and further pave the way towards superconducting artificial lattices.

Edge states forming at the boundaries of topologically non-trivial phases of matter are promising candidates for future device applications because of their stability against local perturbations. Magnetically ordered spin chains proximitized by an s-wave superconductor are predicted to enter a topologically non-trivial mini-gapped phase with zero-energy Majorana modes (MMs) localized at their ends. However, the presence of non-topological end states mimicking MM properties can spoil their unambiguous observation. Here, we report on a method to experimentally decide on the MM nature of end states observed for the first time in antiferromagnetic spin chains. Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we find end states at either finite or near-zero energy in Mn chains on Nb(110) or Ta(110), respectively, within a large minigap. By introducing a locally perturbing defect on one end of the chain, the end state on this side splits off from zero-energy while the one on the other side doesn't - ruling out their MM origin. A minimal model shows that, while wide trivial minigaps hosting such conventional end states are easily achieved in antiferromagnetic spin chains, unrealistically large spin-orbit couplings are required to drive the system into the topologically nontrivial phase with MMs. The methodology of perturbing chains by local defects is a powerful tool to probe the stability of future candidate topological edge modes against local disorder.

Recently, a colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) was observed in EuCd$_2$P$_2$ -- a compound that does not fit the conventional mixed-valence paradigm. Instead, experimental evidence points at a resistance driven by strong magnetic fluctuations within the two-dimensional ($2d$) ferromagnetic (FM) planes of the layered antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure. While the experimental results have not yet been fully understood, a recent theory relates the CMR to a topological vortex-antivortex unbinding, i.e., Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT), phase transition. Motivated by these observations, in this work we explore the magnetic phases hosted by a microscopic classical magnetic model for EuCd$_2$P$_2$, which easily generalizes to other Eu A-type antiferromagnetic compounds. Using Monte Carlo techniques to probe the specific heat and the helicity modulus, we show that our model can exhibit a vortex-antivortex unbinding phase transition. We find that this phase transition displays the same sensitivity to in-plane magnetization, interlayer coupling, and easy-plane anisotropy that is observed experimentally in the CMR signal, providing qualitative numerical evidence that the effect is related to a magnetic BKT transition., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

We develop a microscopic theory for the two-dimensional spectroscopy of one-dimensional topological superconductors. We consider a ring geometry as a realization of the Kitaev chain with periodic boundary conditions. We show numerically and analytically that the cross-peak structure of the 2D spectra carries unique signatures of the topological phases of the chain. Our work reveals how 2D spectroscopy can identify topological phases in bulk properties, bypassing energy-specific differences caused by topologically protected or trivial boundary modes that are otherwise hard to distinguish., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures

Recently proposed spintronic devices use magnetic skyrmions as bits of information. The reliable detection of those chiral magnetic objects is an indispensable requirement. Yet, the high mobility of magnetic skyrmions leads to their stochastic motion at finite temperatures, which hinders the precise measurement of the topological numbers. Here, we demonstrate the successful training of artificial neural networks to reconstruct the skyrmion number in confined geometries from time-integrated, dimensionally reduced data. Our results prove the possibility to recover the topological charge from a time-averaged measurement and hence smeared dynamic skyrmion ensemble, which is of immediate relevance to the interpretation of experimental results, skyrmion-based computing, and memory concepts, Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Magnetic skyrmions and their anti-particles, the antiskyrmions, are stable magnetic solitons existing down to the nanometer scale. Their stability and size as well as the possibility to propel them by, e.g., electric currents make them promising candidates for the use in memory devices, such as racetrack memories. Skyrmions and antiskyrmions share those same advantages individually, but may annihilate each other when they coexist in the same device. Yet, combining them to represent logical bits of 0 (skyrmion) and 1 (antiskyrmion) in one device opens new possibilities to create new types of densely packed racetrack memory devices. For this, a controlled creation and annihilation procedure, i.e., a writing or deletion operation, is necessary. Here, we propose a method to create arbitrary sequences of coexisting skyrmions and antiskyrmions by rotations of the magnetic moments at the edge of a rectangular slab. The skyrmions and antiskyrmions remain stable and do not annihilate each other.

We study the creation of quantum skyrmions in quadratic nanoscopic lattices of quantum spins coupled by Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya and exchange interactions. We numerically show that different kinds of quantum skyrmions, characterized by the magnitude of their spin expectation values and strong differences in their stability, can appear as ground state and as metastable excitations. In dependence on the coupling strengths and the lattice size, an adiabatic rotation scheme of the magnetization at the lattice boundaries allows for a controlled creation of quantum skyrmions.

Understanding the magnetic properties of atomic chains on superconductors is an essential cornerstone on the road towards controlling and constructing topological electronic matter. Yet, even in simple models, the magnetic ground states remain debated. Ferromagnetic (FM), antiferromagnetic (AFM), and spin spiral configurations have been suggested and experimentally detected, while non-coplanar and complex collinear phases have been additionally conjectured. Here, we resolve parts of the controversy by determining the magnetic ground states of chains of magnetic atoms in proximity to a superconductor with Monte-Carlo methods. We confirm the existence of FM, AFM and spin spiral ground states, exclude non-coplanar phases in the model and clarify the parametric region of a $\uparrow\uparrow\downarrow\downarrow$-phase. We further identify a number of novel complex collinear spin configurations, including the periodic spin configurations $\uparrow\uparrow\uparrow\downarrow$, and $\uparrow \uparrow \uparrow \downarrow \uparrow \downarrow \downarrow \downarrow \uparrow \downarrow$, which are in some cases combined with harmonic and anharmonic spirals to form the ground state. We topologically classify the electronic structures, investigate their stability against increasing the superconducting order parameter, and explain the complex collinear order by an effective Heisenberg model with dominant four-spin interactions.

Magnetic atoms on superconductors induce localized Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) bound states. The proposal that topological superconductivity and Majorana modes can be engineered in arrays of hybridizing YSR states has led to their intense investigation. Here, we study Majorana modes emerging from bands of hybridized YSR states in artificially constructed Manganese (Mn) chains on superconducting Niobium (Nb). By controlling the chain geometry on the single atom level, we can measure the interaction-induced energy splitting of Majorana modes from both chain's ends with increasing chain length. We find periodic lengths where their interaction is tuned to zero within the experimental energy resolution. Our work unravels ways to manipulate and minimize interactions between Majorana modes in finite-size systems as required for Majorana-based storage and processing of quantum information., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

A major challenge in developing topological superconductors for implementing topological quantum computing is their characterization and control. It has been proposed that a p-wave gapped topological superconductor can be fabricated with single-atom precision by assembling chains of magnetic atoms on s-wave superconductors with spin-orbit coupling. Here, we analyze the Bogoliubov quasiparticle interference in atom-by-atom constructed Mn chains on Nb(110) and for the first time reveal the formation of multi-orbital Shiba bands using momentum resolved measurements. We find evidence that one band features a topologically non-trivial p-wave gap as inferred from its shape and particle-hole asymmetric intensity. Braiding Majorana zero-modes around each other is a promising route towards topological quantum computing. Yet, two competing maxims emerge when implementing Majorana braiding in real systems: On the one hand, perfect braiding should be conducted adiabatically slowly to avoid non-topological errors. On the other hand, braiding must be conducted fast such that decoherence effects introduced by the environment are negligible, which are generally unavoidable in finite-size systems. This competition results in an intermediate time scale for Majorana braiding that is optimal, but generally not error-free. Here, we calculate this intermediate time scale for a T-junction of short one-dimensional topological superconductors coupled to a bosonic bath that generates fluctuations in the local electric potential, which stem from, e.g., environmental photons or phonons of the substrate. We thereby obtain boundaries for the speed of Majorana braiding with a predetermined gate fidelity. Our results emphasize the general susceptibility of Majorana-based information storage in finite-size systems and can serve as a guide for determining the optimal braiding times in future experiments., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

Topologically distinct magnetic structures like skyrmions, domain walls, and the uniformly magnetized state have multiple applications in logic devices, sensors, and as bits of information. One of the most promising concepts for applying these bits is the racetrack architecture controlled by electric currents or magnetic driving fields. In state-of-the-art racetracks, these fields or currents are applied to the whole circuit. Here, we employ micromagnetic and atomistic simulations to establish a concept for racetrack memories free of global driving forces. Surprisingly, we realize that mixed sequences of topologically distinct objects can be created and propagated over far distances exclusively by local rotation of magnetization at the sample boundaries. We reveal the dependence between the chirality of the rotation and the direction of propagation and define the phase space where the proposed procedure can be realized. We demonstrate that the recently discovered triple-Q (3Q) magnetic structure, when embedded in a magnet-superconductor hybrid (MSH) system, gives rise to the emergence of topological superconductivity. We investigate the structure of chiral Majorana edge modes at domain walls, and show that they can be distinguished from trivial in-gap modes through the spatial distribution of the induced supercurrents. Chains of magnetic atoms with either strong spin-orbit coupling or spiral magnetic order which are proximity-coupled to superconducting substrates can host topologically non-trivial Majorana bound states. The experimental signature of these states consists of spectral weight at the Fermi energy and spatially localized near the ends of the chain. However, topologically trivial Yu-Shiba-Rusinov in-gap states localized near the ends of the chain can lead to similar spectra. Here, we explore a protocol to disentangle these contributions by artificially augmenting a candidate Majorana spin chain with orbitally-compatible nonmagnetic atoms. Combining scanning tunneling spectroscopy with ab-initio and tight-binding calculations, we realize a sharp spatial transition between the proximity-coupled spiral magnetic order and the non-magnetic superconducting wire termination, with persistent zero-energy spectral weight localized at either end of the magnetic spiral. Our findings open a new path towards the control of the spatial position of in-gap end states, trivial or Majorana, via different chain terminations, and the realization of designer Majorana chain networks for demonstrating topological quantum computation., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Abrikosov vortices in Fe-based superconductors are a promising platform for hosting Majorana zero modes. Their adiabatic exchange is a key ingredient for Majorana-based quantum computing. However, the adiabatic braiding process can not be realized in state-of-the-art experiments. We propose to replace the infinitely slow, long-path braiding by only slightly moving vortices in a special geometry without actually physically exchanging the Majoranas, like a Majorana carousel. Although the resulting finite-time gate is not topologically protected, it is robust against variations in material specific parameters and in the braiding-speed. We prove this analytically. Our results carry over to Y-junctions of Majorana wires.

A magnetic helix can be wound into a classical Heisenberg chain by fixing one end while rotating the other one. We show that in quantum Heisenberg chains \new{of finite length}, the magnetization slips back to the trivial state beyond a finite turning angle. Avoided level crossings thus undermine classical topological protection. Yet, for special values of the axial Heisenberg anisotropy, stable spin helices form again, which are non-locally entangled. Away from these sweet spots, spin helices can be stabilized dynamically or by dissipation. Magnetic skyrmions can be considered as topologically protected localized vortex-like spin textures. Due to their stability, their small size, and the possibility to move them by low electric currents they are promising candidates for spintronic devices. Without violating topological protection, it is possible to create skyrmion-antiskyrmion pairs, as long as the total charge remains unchanged. We derive a skyrmion equation of motion which reveals how spin-polarized charge currents create skyrmion-antiskyrmion pairs. It allows to identify general prerequisites for the pair creation process. We corroborate these general principles by numerical simulations. On a lattice, where topological protection becomes imperfect, the antiskyrmion partner of the pairs is annihilated and only the skyrmion survives. In one spatial dimension, anyons in the original description of Leinaas and Myrheim are formally equivalent to locally interacting bosons described by the Lieb-Liniger model. This admits an interesting reinterpretation of interacting bosons in the context of anyons. We elaborate on this parallel, particularly including the many-body bound states from the attractive Lieb-Liniger model. In the anyonic context these bound states are created purely by quantum-statistical attraction and coined quantum-statistical condensate, which is more robust than the Bose-Einstein condensate. The existence of an excitation gap in the bulk spectrum is one of the most prominent fingerprints of topological phases of matter. In this paper, we propose a family of two dimensional Hamiltonians that yield an unusual class $D$ topological superconductor with a gapless bulk spectrum but well-localized Majorana edge states. We perform a numerical analysis for a representative model of this phase and suggest a concrete physical realization by analyzing the effect of magnetic impurities on the surface of strong topological insulators., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

We consider two dimensional systems in which edge states coexist with a gapless bulk. Such systems may be constructed, for example, by coupling a gapped two dimensional state of matter that carries edge states to a gapless two dimensional system in which the spectrum is composed of a number of Dirac cones. We find that in the absence of disorder the edge states could be protected even when the two systems are coupled, due to momentum and energy conservation. We distinguish between weak and strong edge states by the level of their mixing with the bulk. In the presence of disorder, the edge states may be stabilized when the bulk is localized or destabilized when the bulk is metallic. We analyze the conditions under which these two cases occur. The Kondo cloud, represented by the correlations between the magnetic moment and the spin density in the leads of a Kondo setup, is until now eluding its observation. We exploit the unique coupling of spin and direction of motion of the recently discovered helical liquids in a setup with two leads to establish a proportionality between the Kondo cloud and the time resolved current cross correlations. We analyze the screening of a magnetic quantum dot with spin 1/2 coupled to two helical liquids. Interestingly, we find two qualitatively different sets of Toulouse points, i.e., nontrivial parameters for which we can solve the two channel Kondo model exactly. This enables us to calculate the temperature and voltage dependent Kondo screening cloud, which develops oscillations for an applied spin voltage $\mu_s$. Such a spin voltage can be conveniently applied by a charge bias in a four-terminal helical liquid setup.
