Abstract

Plant functional traits, in particular specific leaf area (SLA), wood density and seed mass, are often good predictors of individual tree growth rates within communities. Individuals and species with high SLA, low wood density and small seeds tend to have faster growth rates. If community-level relationships between traits and growth have general predictive value, then similar relationships should also be observed in analyses that integrate across taxa, biogeographic regions and environments. Such global consistency would imply that traits could serve as valuable proxies for the complex suite of factors that determine growth rate, and, therefore, could underpin a new generation of robust dynamic vegetation models. Alternatively, growth rates may depend more strongly on the local environment or growth-trait relationships may vary along environmental gradients. We tested these alternative hypotheses using data on 27 352 juvenile trees, representing 278 species from 27 sites on all forested continents, and extensive functional trait data, 38% of which were obtained at the same sites at which growth was assessed. Data on potential evapotranspiration (PET), which summarizes the joint ecological effects of temperature and precipitation, were obtained from a global data base. We estimated size-standardized relative height growth rates (SGR) for all species, then related them to functional traits and PET using mixed-effect models for the fastest growing species and for all species together. Both the mean and 95th percentile SGR were more strongly associated with functional traits than with PET. PET was unrelated to SGR at the global scale. SGR increased with increasing SLA and decreased with increasing wood density and seed mass, but these traits explained only 3.1% of the variation in SGR. SGR-trait relationships were consistently weak across families and biogeographic zones, and over a range of tree statures. Thus, the most widely studied functional traits in plant ecology were poor predictors of tree growth over large scales. Synthesis. We conclude that these functional traits alone may be unsuitable for predicting growth of trees over broad scales. Determining the functional traits that predict vital rates under specific environmental conditions may generate more insight than a monolithic global relationship can offer. The most widely studied functional traits in plant ecology, specific leaf area, wood density and seed mass, were only weakly associated with tree growth rates over broad scales. Assessing trait-growth relationships under specific environmental conditions may generate more insight than a global relationship can offer.

Abstract

Deadwood is a large global carbon store with its store size partially determined by biotic decay. Microbial wood decay rates are known to respond to changing temperature and precipitation. Termites are also important decomposers in the tropics but are less well studied. An understanding of their climate sensitivities is needed to estimate climate change effects on wood carbon pools. Using data from 133 sites spanning six continents, we found that termite wood discovery and consumption were highly sensitive to temperature (with decay increasing >6.8 times per 10°C increase in temperature)—even more so than microbes. Termite decay effects were greatest in tropical seasonal forests, tropical savannas, and subtropical deserts. With tropicalization (i.e., warming shifts to tropical climates), termite wood decay will likely increase as termites access more of Earth’s surface. Introducción. Los bancos de semillas del suelo (SSB) son esenciales en la restauración ecológica, ya que reflejan la composición de una comunidad local, la dispersión de propágulos y actúan como reservas de semillas. Los BSS son también importantes determinantes de la emergencia y el establecimiento de las plántulas. Muchos bosques de montaña cerca de Bogotá (Colombia) se han estado regenerando y, aunque hay estudios sobre la vegetación en pie en esta zona, pocos se han centrado en las SSB y las plántulas. Por lo tanto, el conocimiento de las comunidades de SSB y plántulas proporcionaría información valiosa sobre la dinámica de la regeneración en estos bosques. Objetivo e hipótesis. Mi objetivo fue entender cómo cambió la diversidad de SSBs y plántulas (Sdl) entre el Bosque Tropical de Montaña joven (SF) y el viejo (OF) y cómo las características del suelo pueden jugar un papel en la determinación de la composición de SSBs y Sdl. A pesar de las marcadas diferencias en la composición de especies, la estructura del bosque y las condiciones edáficas entre SF y OF, esperaba encontrar similitudes en la composición de especies en las SSBs entre los bosques jóvenes y viejos. Esto es debido a que los SSBs están dominados por bosques de semilla pequeña y de sucesión temprana Para la comunidad de plántulas, esperábamos encontrar diferencias en la composición entre el bosque viejo y el joven. Materiales y Métodos. Se establecieron diez parcelas en tres sitios diferentes alrededor de Bogotá como parte del proyecto Rastrojos, cinco de OF y cinco de SF. Evalué el SSB utilizando el método de emergencia de plántulas en un invernadero y realicé estudios de plántulas en el campo para evaluar la comunidad de plántulas. Además, utilicé datos de flujos de nutrientes y de concentración de nutrientes de la base de datos del proyecto Rastrojo para analizar la relación de la SSB con las condiciones edáficas. Resultados y Discusión. Encontré un índice de Bray Curtis de 0,48 entre la SSB OF y la SSB SF, y un valor de 0,51 entre la Sdl SF y la Sdl OF. Estos resultados sugieren que la composición de la comunidad de SSB o Sdl no difiere en gran medida entre los tipos de bosque. Para las SSB, encontré que las parcelas que eran más similares en cuanto a pH o flujo de NH4-N, eran también más similares en cuanto a la composición de la comunidad de SSB. Es probable que estas características edáficas afecten a la viabilidad y capacidad de germinación de las semillas. Por el contrario, para la comunidad de semillas, ninguna de las otras variables del suelo (densidad aparente, flujo de aluminio, flujo de fósforo, flujo de nitritos, flujo de nitratos, C%, N%), estuvieron relacionadas con la composición de la comunidad, excepto la temperatura del suelo y del aire, Conclusión. Aunque los SSB son importantes en las primeras etapas de la regeneración, los SSB son parcialmente diferentes entre las etapas sucesionales. Asimismo, la composición de la comunidad de plántulas no es tan diferente entre SF y OF. Por lo tanto, otros factores (pH, NH4-N, temperatura del suelo) pueden ser más críticos para el establecimiento de la especie en bosques maduros. Además, el lugar de estudio juega un papel importante para el ensamblaje de la comunidad de plántulas y SSBs. Además, según la etapa de vida (semilla o plántula) diferentes factores ambientales son importantes en el ensamblaje de la comunidad. Es necesario seguir estudiando estos ecosistemas ya que se conoce poco sobre ellos, y profundizar en su conocimiento es esencial para entender su ecología y mejorar los programas de gestión.

Abstract

Leaf‐level net photosynthesis (A n) estimates and associated photosynthetic parameters are crucial for accurately parameterizing photosynthesis models. For tropical forests, such data are poorly available and collected at variable light conditions. To avoid over‐ or underestimation of modeled photosynthesis, it is critical to know at which photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) photosynthesis becomes light‐saturated. We studied the dependence of A n on PPFD in two tropical forests in French Guiana. We estimated the light saturation range, including the lowest PPFD level at which A sat (A n at light saturation) is reached, as well as the PPFD range at which A sat remained unaltered. The light saturation range was derived from photosynthetic light‐response curves, and within‐canopy and interspecific differences were studied. We observed wide light saturation ranges of A n. Light saturation ranges differed among canopy heights, but a PPFD level of 1,000 µmol m−2 s−1 was common across all heights, except for pioneer trees species that did not reach light saturation below 2,000 µmol m−2 s−1. A light intensity of 1,000 µmol m−2 s−1 sufficed for measuring A sat of climax species at our study sites, independent of the species or the canopy height. Because of the wide light saturation ranges, results from studies measuring A sat at higher PPFD levels (for upper canopy leaves up to 1,600 µmol m−2 s−1) are comparable with studies measuring at 1,000 µmol m−2 s−1.

Abstract

Measuring leaf gas exchange from canopy leaves is fundamental for our understanding of photosynthesis and for a realistic representation of carbon uptake in vegetation models. Since canopy leaves are often difficult to reach, especially in tropical forests with emergent trees up to 60 m at remote places, canopy access techniques such as canopy cranes or towers have facilitated photosynthetic measurements. These structures are expensive and therefore not very common. As an alternative, branches are often cut to enable leaf gas exchange measurements. The effect of branch excision on leaf gas exchange rates should be minimized and quantified to evaluate possible bias. We compared light‐saturated leaf net photosynthetic rates measured on excised and intact branches. We selected branches positioned at three canopy positions, estimated relative to the top of the canopy: upper sunlit foliage, middle canopy foliage, and lower canopy foliage. We studied the variation of the effects of branch excision and transport among branches at these different heights in the canopy. After excision and transport, light‐saturated leaf net photosynthetic rates were close to zero for most leaves due to stomatal closure. However, when the branch had acclimated to its new environmental conditions—which took on average 20 min—light‐saturated leaf net photosynthetic rates did not significantly differ between the excised and intact branches. We therefore conclude that branch excision does not affect the measurement of light‐saturated leaf net photosynthesis, provided that the branch is recut under water and is allowed sufficient time to acclimate to its new environmental conditions.

Abstract

Extreme drought events have negative effects on forest diversity and functioning. At the species level, however, these effects are still unclear, as species vary in their response to drought through specific functional trait combinations. We used long‐term demographic records of 21,821 trees and extensive databases of traits to understand the responses of 338 tropical dry forests tree species to ENSO2015, the driest event in decades in Northern South America. Functional differences between species were related to the hydraulic safety‐efficiency trade‐off, but unexpectedly, dominant species were characterised by high investment in leaf and wood tissues regardless of their leaf phenological habit. Despite broad functional trait combinations, tree mortality was more widespread in the functional space than tree growth, where less adapted species showed more negative net biomass balances. Our results suggest that if dry conditions increase in this ecosystem, ecological functionality and biomass gain would be reduced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The article reports on the visual assessment of the distribution, density and abundance of the queen conch Strombus gigas in Los Roques Archipelago National Park in Venezuela. The two random surveys indicated zones with potential nursery areas and the biggest aggregation of adults on sand plains at depths or more than 16 meters, actively mating. It is recommended that the national park be maintained as a sanctuary for this species and prohibit the reopening of the fishery.

Abstract

The article discusses the fishery-dependent monitoring of a spawning aggregation of tiger grouper known as Mycteroperca tigris at Vieques Island, Puerto Rico, conducted from 1995 to 1999 with very limited fishing in 1999. Aggregation formed at the El Seco site. Predation losses of hooked fish to sharks were quantified and it was found out that an average of 33% of captured fish were lost to predation. Landings from the fishery declined about 60%. Continued fishing is said to be unsustainable.

Abstract

AbstractThe alpine páramo of Chingaza National Park, Colombia, has a highly variable cloud regime typical of many tropical alpine areas. Yet, little information is available regarding the effects of such dynamic sunlight regimes on alpine temperatures. A close association between changes in incident sunlight and corresponding air (Ta) and leaf (Tl) temperatures occurred in two dominant species with strongly contrasting leaf form and whole-plant architecture. Spikes in sunlight incidence of >3000 μmol m−2s−1occurred during cloud cover and corresponded to increases in Tlof 4–5 °C in a 1-min-interval in both species. Although Tlwas predominately above Ta, during the day, depressions below Taof over 6 °C occurred during cloudy conditions when photosynthetic photon flux density (PFDs) was <400 μmol m−2s−1. The greatest frequency (69%) of changes in incident sunlight (PFDs; over 2-min intervals) was less than 100 μmol m−2s−1, although changes >1000 μmol m−2s−1occurred for 2.4% of the day, including a maximum change of 1512 μmol m−2s−1. These data may be valuable for predicting the ecophysiological impact of climate warming and associated changes in future cloud regimes experienced by tropical alpine species.

Abstract

El objetivo de esta tesis fue identificar los determinantes de la dureza ambiental en los Bosques Tropicales Secos (TDF) de Colombia y estudiar su influencia en los atributos y funcionamiento de las comunidades vegetales. Además, esta tesis evaluó cómo la sequía extrema de El Niño Oscilación del Sur de 2015 (ENSO2015) afectó la dinámica de la biomasa de este ecosistema. En general, encontramos que: (1) Los TDF colombianos son ampliamente heterogéneos en su transformación del clima, el suelo y la cobertura terrestre y que la interacción de estos factores es lo que determina la dureza ambiental de este ecosistema. (2) La dureza ambiental impulsa cambios en la composición de especies, la diversidad de especies y la estructura del bosque, y la composición de la comunidad de rasgos y la productividad de la biomasa TDF. (3) las especies de árboles TDF están adaptadas para hacer frente a las agresiones ambientales a través de diferentes combinaciones de características funcionales; sin embargo, todas las especies de árboles parecen ser sensibles a las sequías extremas. En consecuencia, los eventos de sequía extrema provocan balances netos de biomasa negativos, en particular para especies que tienen características asociadas con una alta eficiencia hidráulica e inversiones en tejidos "baratas". Esta tesis aporta nueva información sobre los impulsores de la dureza ambiental y sus consecuencias ecológicas sobre la diversidad y funcionamiento del TDF, con claras implicaciones para una gestión integral del ecosistema más amenazado de Colombia. The objective of this thesis was to identify the factors determining environmental harshness in Tropical Dry Forests (TDF) of Colombia and to study its influence on plant community attributes and functioning. Additionally, this thesis evaluated how the extreme “El Niño” Southern Oscillation drought of 2015 (ENSO2015) affected biomass dynamics of this ecosystem. Overall, we found that: (1) Colombian TDF are widely heterogeneous in their climate, soil, and land-cover transformation and that the interaction of these factors is what determines the environmental harshness in this ecosystem. (2) Environmental harshness drives changes in species composition, species diversity and forest structure, and trait community composition and biomass productivity of TDF. (3) TDF tree species are adapted to cope with environmental harshness via different functional trait combinations; nevertheless, all tree species seem to be sensitive to extreme droughts. Accordingly, extreme drought events cause negative net biomass balances, particularly for species having traits associated with high hydraulic efficiency and ‘cheap’ tissue investments. This dissertation provides new information about the drivers of environmental harshness and their ecological consequences on TDF diversity and functioning, with clear implications for a comprehensive management of the most threatened ecosystem in Colombia. Abstract

Deadwood is a large global carbon store with its store size partially determined by biotic decay. Microbial wood decay rates are known to respond to changing temperature and precipitation. Termites are also important decomposers in the tropics but are less well studied. An understanding of their climate sensitivities is needed to estimate climate change effects on wood carbon pools. Using data from 133 sites spanning six continents, we found that termite wood discovery and consumption were highly sensitive to temperature (with decay increasing >6.8 times per 10°C increase in temperature)-even more so than microbes. Termite decay effects were greatest in tropical seasonal forests, tropical savannas, and subtropical deserts. With tropicalization (i.e., warming shifts to tropical climates), termite wood decay will likely increase as termites access more of Earth's surface.
