Ten phenolic acids, contained in the seeds of black cumin (Nigella sativa L.), flax (Linum usitatissimum L.), pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) and pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo L.) and their oil industry by-products, separated into the free, esterified, and insoluble-bound forms, were quantitatively analysed by reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detector. The chromatographic data were interpreted using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The PCA model with three principal components (PC1-PC2-PC3) fitted well with 12 examined plant samples, allowing their division into groups according to their origin. The total phenolic variables could be represented by two PCs and for the pattern recognition of the analysed samples, 13 phenolic variables are sufficient, including: free, esterified and insoluble-bound forms of gallic and syringic acids, free vanillic, insoluble bound p-coumaric, esterified p-hydroxybenzaldehide, and free and insoluble-bound forms of p-hydroxybenzoic and trans-synapic acids. Bile acid anions are steroidal biosurfactants that form primary micelles due to the hydrophobic effect. At higher concentrations of some bile acid anions, secondary micelles are formed; hydrogen bonds connect primary micelles. Monoketo derivatives of cholic acid, which have reduced membrane toxicity, are important for biopharmaceutical examinations. The main goal is to explain why the processes of formation of primary and secondary micelles are separated from each other, i.e., why secondary micelles do not form parallel to primary micelles. The association of the anion of 7-oxodeoxycholic acid (a monoketo derivative of cholic acid) is observed through the dependence of the spin–lattice relaxation time on total surfactant concentration T1 = f(CT). On the function T1 = f(CT), two sharp jumps of the spin–lattice relaxation time are obtained, i.e., two critical micellar concentrations (CMC). The aggregation number of the micelle at 50 mM total concentration of 7-oxodeoxycholic acid anions in the aqueous solution is 4.2 ± 0.3, while at the total concentration of 100 mM the aggregation number is 9.0 ± 0.9. The aggregation number of the micelle changes abruptly in the concentration interval of 80–90 mM (the aggregation number determined using fluorescence measurements). By applying Le Chatelier's principle, the new mechanism of formation of secondary micelles is given, and the decoupling of the process of formation of primary and secondary micelles at lower concentrations of monomers (around the first critical micellar concentration) and the coupling of the same processes at higher equilibrium concentrations of monomers (around the second critical micellar concentration) is explained. Stereochemically and thermodynamically, a direct mutual association of primary micelles is less likely, but monomeric units are more likely to be attached to primary micelles, i.e., 7-oxodeoxycholic acid anions. A simple synthesis of mono- and bis-salicylic acid derivatives 1-10 by the transesterification of methyl salicylate (methyl 2-hydroxybenzoate) with 3-oxapentane-1,5-diol, 3,6- dioxaoctane-1,8-diol, 3,6,9-trioxaundecane-1,11-diol, propane-1,2-diol or 1-aminopropan- 2-ol in alkaline conditions is reported. All compounds were tested in vitro on three malignant cell lines (MCF-7, MDA-MB-231, PC-3) and one non-tumor cell line (MRC- 5). Strong cytotoxicity against prostate PC-3 cancer cells expressed compounds 3, 4, 6, 9 and 10, all with the IC50 less than 10 μmol/L, which were 11-27 times higher than the cytotoxicity of antitumor drug doxorubicin. All tested compounds were not toxic against the non-tumor MRC-5 cell line. Antioxidant activity of the synthesized derivatives was also evaluated. Compounds 2, 5 and 8 were better OH radical scavengers than commercial antioxidants BHT and BHA. The synthesized compounds showed satisfactory scavenger activity, which was studied by QSAR modeling. A good correlation between the experimental variables IC50 DPPH and IC50 OH and MTI (molecular topological indices) molecular descriptors and CAA (accessible Connolly solvent surface area) for the new compounds 1, 3, and 5 was observed.

The present study is concerned with the determination of the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of mixed micelles of sodium dodecyl sulfate with one of five nonionic surfactants (Triton X-100, Tween 20, Tween 60, Tween 80 or Tween 85) from conductance measurements. Based on the calculated values of the β parameters we have noticed that SDS-nonionic surfactants mostly showed strong synergistic effect. It was found that nonionic surfactants with mainly longer and more hydrophobic tail show stronger interactions with hydrophobic part of SDS, thus expressing stronger synergism. In SDS-Tween 80 binary system the strongest synergistic effect was noticed. SDS-Tween 85 micellar system showed antagonistic effect, most probably because the presence of the double bond in its three hydrophobic tails (three C18 tails) makes it sterically rigid.

Due to their promotory action on the transport of some drugs through various membranes (lipophilic barriers), oxo derivatives of bile acids have recently been increasingly used in biopharmacy. These compounds exhibit also a lower membranolytic (toxic) activity than their hydroxy analogues. Because of that it is of special importance to find out the descriptors that would adequately describe the structure of bile acids and their biological activity and be used to model the quantitative structure-activity relationship. In view of this, the present work is concerned with the application of the chromatographic parameter RM0 obtained by normal-phase thin-layer chromatography in the solvent system toluene-butanol and silica gel as stationary phase to describe the lipophilicity of bile acids. Also, the work introduces a new molecular descriptor (ND) that reflects both 2D and 3D topological characteristics of the molecule. Between the retention constant, RM0 and the descriptor ND there is a good correlation, and both RM0, and ND describe sufficiently well the structural (conformational) changes that arise in the process of oxidation of the OH group of the steroid skeleton to an oxo group. On the other hand, the in silico descriptors of lipophilicity, logP (atomic-based prediction) and ClogP (fragment-based prediction) predict the hydrophobicity of bile acid oxo derivatives with a certain error.
