This longitudinal study explored the impact of COVID‐19 on individuals in romantic relationships. The sample spans three waves: first confinement (n = 52), deconfinement (n = 49), and second confinement (n = 26). The study tested sociodemographic factors, psychological adjustment (anxiety, depression, stress, well‐being), COVID‐19 threat perception, dyadic coping, and relationship quality. Results from repeated measures ANOVA and fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) models revealed a decline in anxiety, depression, and stress symptoms, coupled with improved relationship quality over time. Well‐being and dyadic coping remained stable, while COVID‐19 threat perception increased. QCA models emphasized the predictive power of initial mental states (anxiety, depression, stress, and well‐being at W1) on subsequent adjustment. Notably, shorter relationship duration, healthcare worker status, and not having children, when combined with prior mental states, explained increased symptoms and diminished well‐being. The study underscores the significance of addressing these factors in individuals navigating romantic relationships during the pandemic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The world has been facing a pandemic crisis caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, responsible for the COVID-19 disease. In Portugal, there were several waves of the pandemic, characterized by peaks of infections and deaths, as well as several measures that had an impact on the way people feel and relate. The main objective of the present investigation was to analyze stress during the pandemic, and its relationship with family functioning, perceived relational quality and online infidelity behaviors. 234 subjects participated, aged between 18 and 61 years. The study results indicate moderate to severe levels of stress, and these were significantly related to online infidelity behaviors. A total of 9.4% of the sample engaged in online infidelity behaviors during the pandemic period (between March 2020 and May 2021) and 13.4% of these behaviors were predicted by the variables under study. It was concluded that stress and relational quality are risk factors for online infidelity behaviors. Stress is also related to the dysfunctional dimensions of family functioning. In the aftermath of the pandemic, various aspects of the relationship may have been affected by the levels of stress felt, and culminated in online infidelity behaviors and family dysfunction. The results suggest the importance of relationships as a protective factor against pandemic changes, but also the need to work on relational aspects in times of crisis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic is a worldwide event that has caused significant changes in the daily lives of individuals and families. The combined effect of the pandemic and the stress associated with major life cycle changes, such as the transition to parenthood, is yet to be understood. The aim of the current study was to validate the Portuguese version of the recently developed COVID‐19 Household Environment Scale (CHES) and examine its psychometric properties in a sample of mothers who had given birth during the pandemic. The CHES is a self‐report measure assessing the consequences of the COVID‐19 pandemic in household cohesion and conflict and includes two sections. Section 1 contains 25 descriptive items pertaining to sociodemographic and household characteristics and COVID‐19 stressors. Section 2 encompasses household cohesion and conflict, assessing any change in household experiences and activities following the onset of social distancing. The participants consisted of 342 mothers, aged between 19 and 50 years (M = 31.43; SD = 4.38). A confirmatory factor analysis supported the original CHES bifactor structure of household cohesion and conflict, which obtained an acceptable fit (CFI = 0.900, RMSEA = 0.065). Correlations between household cohesion and conflict and family cohesion and dyadic coping contributed to developing the construct validity of this scale. Furthermore, both CHES subscales demonstrated very good internal consistency. Further research is warranted to assess the CHES in other cultural contexts. This is a useful tool to assess change in family households due to the unprecedented adverse pandemic experience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The present study sought to gain a comprehensive understanding of how men navigated the transition to fatherhood during a highly stressful pandemic. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 Portuguese first-time fathers during 2021. Results from thematic analyses suggested that key moments and experiences were disrupted for these men due to the pandemic, promoting gender role stress in the context of fathering. Positive implications were also mentioned, namely the possibility of greater father involvement in both the prenatal and postnatal periods provided by work-related measures (e.g., telework, furlough). This study reinforces the need for socio-political and hospital policies targeting the promotion of fathers’ inclusion and active involvement during this key life transition.

- Abstract
The growing use of social networking sites places them among the most popular online activities. In particular, Facebook is gaining increasing numbers of users. For some individuals, such activity can develop into addictive online behaviour. The main objective of this study was to assess the influence of sociodemographic (e.g., gender, age), individual (e.g., differentiation of self), and family (e.g., family communication) factors on Facebook addiction in Portuguese emerging adults aged between 18 and 30 years. The study included 403 participants, who followed a protocol in which several instruments were administered (e.g., COMPA, BSI, DSI-R, and BFAS). The results showed higher Facebook use and a higher risk of addiction in individuals with the following characteristics: (1) female gender; (2) aged between 24 and 30 years; (3) lower differentiation of self; (4) physically or emotionally distanced from significant others (emotional cut-off); and (5) negative communication patterns with their parents. An association was also found between other psychopathological indicators (e.g., depression, anxiety, and interpersonal sensitivity) and Facebook use. Thus, the present study contributes to the field of research on online addictions and has implications for prevention and clinical intervention, El uso creciente de las redes sociales los ubica entre las actividades on-line más populares.

- Abstract
Olfaction plays an important role in human social communication, including multiple domains in which people often rely on their sense of smell in the social context. The importance of the sense of smell and its role can however vary inter-individually and culturally. Despite the growing body of literature on differences in olfactory performance or hedonic preferences across the globe, the aspects of a given culture as well as culturally universal individual differences affecting odor awareness in human social life remain unknown. Here, we conducted a large-scale analysis of data collected from 10,794 participants from 52 study sites from 44 countries all over the world. The aim of our research was to explore the potential individual and country-level correlates of odor awareness in the social context. The results show that the individual characteristics were more strongly related than country-level factors to self-reported odor awareness in different social contexts. A model including individual-level predictors (gender, age, material situation, education and preferred social distance) provided a relatively good fit to the data, but adding country-level predictors (Human Development Index, population density and average temperature) did not improve model parameters. Although there were some cross-cultural differences in social odor awareness, the main differentiating role was played by the individual differences. This suggests that people living in different cultures and different climate conditions may still share some similar patterns of odor awareness if they share other individual-level characteristics., Published: 27 June 2018Funders: Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education, IP2014 043773; Deanship of Scientific Research at King Saud University, (RG-1439-012); Estonian Ministry of Education of Science, (IUT2-13); Ministry of Education and Science, 01201370995

- Abstract
Human spatial behavior has been the focus of hundreds of previous research studies. However, the conclusions and generalizability of previous studies on interpersonal distance preferences were limited by some important methodological and sampling issues. The objective of the present study was to compare preferred interpersonal distances across the world and to overcome the problems observed in previous studies. We present an extensive analysis of interpersonal distances over a large data set (N = 8,943 participants from 42 countries). We attempted to relate the preferred social, personal, and intimate distances observed in each country to a set of individual characteristics of the participants, and some attributes of their cultures. Our study indicates that individual characteristics (age and gender) influence interpersonal space preferences and that some variation in results can be explained by temperature in a given region. We also present objective values of preferred interpersonal distances in different regions, which might be used as a reference data point in future studies.

- Abstract
Forms of committed relationships, including formal marriage arrangements between men and women, exist in almost every culture (Bell, 1997). Yet, similarly to many other psychological constructs (Henrich et al., 2010), marital satisfaction and its correlates have been investigated almost exclusively in Western countries (e.g., Bradbury et al., 2000). Meanwhile, marital relationships are heavily guided by culturally determined norms, customs, and expectations (for review see Berscheid, 1995; Fiske et al., 1998). While we acknowledge the differences existing both between- and within-cultures, we measured marital satisfaction and several factors that might potentially correlate with it based on self-report data from individuals across 33 countries. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the raw data available for anybody interested in further examining any relations between them and other country-level scores obtained elsewhere.

Emerging adulthood has been described in literature as a new phase of individual and family life cycle. This new stage (18-25 years old) is characterized by identity configuration, instability, selffocused and feeling in between of emerging adults. Notwithstanding the theoretical relevance of this topic, there is a research gap about parent-child communication in this stage, perhaps because of the lack of appropriate measures. The purpose of this study was to validate a scale originally developed to assess parent-adolescent communication (Perception Scale of Parenting Communication) to this new stage of life cycle. A cross-sectional and descriptive design was used to explore the perception of 217 emerging adults (68.2% females) about communication with their parents. A new version of Perception Scale of Parenting Communication was designed with 17 items distributed by four factors (parental confidence/sharing, children confidence/sharing, emotional support/affective expression, and negative communication patterns), according to confirmatory factor analysis. Results showed that Perception Scale of Parenting Communication is a valid and consistent measure (a= .934 mother version; a= .923 father version) to assess parent-emerging adult communication. This study provides important implication for research and practice such as the design of a new tool to assess family communication in emerging adulthood stage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Objective: Theories about how couples help each other to cope with stress, such as the systemic transactional model of dyadic coping, suggest that the cultural context in which couples live influences how their coping behavior affects their relationship satisfaction. In contrast to the theoretical assumptions, a recent meta-analysis provides evidence that neither culture, nor gender, influences the association between dyadic coping and relationship satisfaction, at least based on their samples of couples living in North America and West Europe. Thus, it is an open questions whether the theoretical assumptions of cultural influences are false or whether cultural influences on couple behavior just occur in cultures outside of the Western world. Method: In order to examine the cultural influence, using a sample of married individuals (N = 7973) from 35 nations, we used multilevel modeling to test whether the positive association between dyadic coping and relationship satisfaction varies across nations and whether gender might moderate the association. Results: Results reveal that the association between dyadic coping and relationship satisfaction varies between nations. In addition, results show that in some nations the association is higher for men and in other nations it is higher for women. Conclusions: Cultural and gender differences across the globe influence how couples' coping behavior affects relationship outcomes. This crucial finding indicates that couple relationship education programs and interventions need to be culturally adapted, as skill trainings such as dyadic coping lead to differential effects on relationship satisfaction based on the culture in which couples live.

The main goal of this study was the presentation of the psychometric characteristics of the Scale of Parenting Communication (COMPA): parental version, adolescent version (12-16 years old) and children version (7-11 years old). This instrument has the purpose of evaluating the percepction of parents and children regarding their communication. The sample was composed of 803 parents and 619 children sampled from a Portuguese population. The results of an exploratory factor analysis revealed a five factor structure for the parental version (emotional support/affective expression, α:.821; parental availability to communication, α:.732; metacommunication, α:.725; parental confidence/sharing, α:.753; children confidence/sharing α:.615) and for the adolescent version (parental availability to communication, α:.865; children confidence/sharing, α:.873; emotional support/affective expression, α:.838; metacommunication, α:.805; negative communication patterns, α:.650) and a two factor structure for the children version (parental availability to communication, a: .842; emotional support/affective expression, α:.784). This factorial structure was confirmed by structural equations analysis. The levels of internal consistency of COMPA seem to be appropriate for research and clinical use.
