Abstract

L’articolo presenta l’attività svolta in sinergia da varie unità di ricerca coinvolte nel progetto ReLUIS III–Linea Strutture in Muratura attinente alla definizione e analisi di strutture benchmark per la valutazione dell’affidabilità di codici di calcolo mirati all’analisi sismica delle costruzioni in muratura. Obiettivi dell’attività sono sensibilizzare i professionisti ad un uso più consapevole dei software e fornire loro strumenti utili ad analizzare criticamente la qualità e correttezza delle soluzioni ottenute. A tale scopo sono state ideate delle strutture benchmark a partire da singoli pannelli murari verticali, poi accoppiati tramite fasce (sistema trilite e parete) fino ad arrivare ad edifici 3D. Ciascun esempio è proposto parametricamente al variare di molteplici configurazioni costruttive. La crescente complessità degli esempi è concepita per guidare l’utente nella maturazione di una maggiore consapevolezza delle ipotesi sulle quali i programmi di calcolo si basano e delle possibili modalità di interpretazione dei risultati. Ove possibile, le strutture benchmark sono state confrontate con la soluzione analitica di riferimento, viceversa sono state fornite procedure di controllo dei risultati o stime dell’intervallo di variazione atteso tramite approcci semplificati. Ciascun esempio è stato analizzato dalle unità di ricerca coinvolte mediante vari codici di calcolo disponibili a livello scientifico e professionale.

5. The influence of out-of-straightness imperfection in Physical-Theory models of bracing members on seismic performance assessment of concentric braced structures

Abstract

In physical theory models, the hysteretic response of concentric braces is simulated by modelling the bracings with two nonlinear fibre-section beam–column elements connected together with an initial out-ofstraightness imperfection (Δ0). The width of such imperfection is the parameter governing the numerical prediction of the brace buckling. In this paper, the accuracy of different formulations of Δ0 is investigated and validated against monotonic and cyclic experimental results from literature carried out on different bracing configurations. Correlations and measures of scatter between the predicted response and experimental performance are evaluated. A statistical analysis on both X-braced and inverted-V-braced frames based on Monte Carlo simulation is presented and discussed for the following reasons: (a) in order to account for the dispersion of the nonlinear dynamic-evaluated seismic performance due to epistemic uncertainties associated with examined formulations for camber width and (b) to provide modelling correction factors of simulated interstorey drift demand. The analysis shows that the formulations used for Δ0 affect the drift demand, the collapse mechanism and have a noticeably impact on the seismic response parameters at collapse. In particular, inverted-V-braced frames are more influenced than X-braced configurations, because the prediction of brace–beam interaction is very sensitive to Δ0.

Abstract

The attention on renovation of European existing building heritage has arisen in last years mainly following EU policies focused on the achievement of ecological and energy improvements. Nevertheless, buildings dating back at the period ranging from 1960 to 1990 represent the biggest amount of the current built environment. This category of constructions often shows inadequate seismic response and a very advanced stage of deterioration, as well, thus requiring huge investments in repair measures, or even the need of demolition. In light of these considerations, this study aims at introducing an integrated approach for the retrofit of existing buildings, accounting for both structural design and sustainability requirements. After a brief introduction on the main characteristics of EU building stock, the work focuses on Italian situation, giving particular attention to reinforced concrete residential buildings, which represents the majority of constructions erected in Campania district at that time (i.e. the ‘60s -‘90s of the last century). The proposed sustainable integrated approach is described and also discussed through an application to a seismic deficient building in Naples.

8. Macro and micro-block modeling approaches for the out-of-plane load capacity of a masonry wall with two sidewalls

Abstract

In this paper, novel macro and micro-block modeling approaches are adopted for the assessment of the collapse load factor and failure mode of block masonry structures. The out-of-plane behavior of a masonry system composed of a façade wall connected with two sidewalls is investigated by means of limit analysis and some recurrent classes of mechanisms are analyzed. These involve rocking, sliding, torsion failure and combinations of them. Both modeling approaches consider masonry as an assemblage of dry rigid blocks with frictional behavior and non-associative flow rules. The macro-block modeling is based on the assumption that all the possible relative motions among micro-blocks are concentrated along the cracks; assuming maximum and minimum frictional resistances along the cracks, two limiting conditions for the ultimate load factor are kinematically computed by use of minimization routines. The micro-block model is based on a novel numerical strategy to solve the non-associative friction problem; second order cone programming (SOCP) is used to allow the conic yield function to be solved directly. Proper graphics show the obtained results with reference to some given geometric parameters and comparisons between both approaches.

10. Non-standard limit analysis for in-plane loaded masonry walls

Abstract

This paper presents a macro-block model and a simplified procedure for the assessment of the lateral capacity of in-plane loaded masonry walls made of rigid blocks and frictional joints. The macro-modelling is based on the assumption that the failure involves a single crack which separates the structure in two macro-blocks and all the possible relative motions among micro-blocks are concentrated along the crack. By using a limit-state analysis approach and assuming that the interaction at surfaces is governed by Coulomb friction, two limiting conditions for the ultimate load factor are kinematically computed with simple formulations in closed form, by use of minimization routines. Two illustrative examples of shear walls existing in the literature are used to validate the macro-block model and the solution procedure.

Abstract

A computer code based on a three-dimensional formulation for limit analysis of in-plane and out-of-plane loaded blocky masonry structures was developed. A rigid-perfectly plastic model with dry contact interfaces governed by cohesionless Coulomb failure criterion is assumed. Linear and linearized yield functions are used for rocking, sliding and torsion failure, whilst a simple yield condition is defined to take into account interaction effects of shear force with torsion and bending moment. Assuming associative flow rules, the limit analysis problem has been formulated as a non-linear mathematical program. An iterative solution procedure based on linear programming and implemented in MATLAB environment is used to solve the limit analysis problem and to take into account non-linearities due to the influence of bending moments and shear stresses on torsion strength. The results of experimental investigations on out-of-plane masonry walls constrained at one edge and numerical examples from the literature were considered for comparison

Abstract

The durability of metal structures is strongly influenced by damage due to atmospheric corrosion, whose control is a key aspect for design and maintenance of both new constructions and historical buildings. Nevertheless, only general provisions are given in European codes to prevent the effects of corrosion during lifetime of metal structures. In particular, design guidelines such as Eurocode 3 do not provide models for the evaluation of corrosion depth which are able to predict the rate of thickness loss as a function of different influencing parameters. In this paper, a report is presented on the modelling approaches of atmospheric corrosion damage of metal structures which are available in both ISO standards and the literature. A comparison among the selected degradation models is shown in order to evaluate the possibility of developing a general approach to the evaluation of thickness loss due to corrosion.

Abstract

Object of the present study is the masonry bridge, still standing, built in 1871, by Eng. Fiocca, on Sele River, near Salerno. This bridge has a single semi-elliptic arch, spanning 55.00 m, with a rise of 13.55 m and a width of 5.40 m; in order to reduce the dead loads the inner tympani were lightened employing ring-like vaults. The first step of this research has been the study of the bridge static behaviour, deduced by the material survey of the existing structure, but also analyzing, verifying and enriching matters treated in the Report of Eng. Sacco, a Fiocca’s collaborator, in which all phases of Devil Bridge designing and building are fully described. The second step has been the evaluation of its seismic vulnerability: a three-dimensional finite element model has been implemented in ABAQUS code. To assess the bridge seismic capacity, non-linear pushover analyses have been carried out.

Abstract

To evaluate the seismic stability of Mustafa Pasha Mosque in Skopje strengthened by an advanced mixed technology, shaking table tests were carried out on a model in scale 1:6. The investigation was performed within the activities of the Sixth Framework Program PROHITECH - oEarthquake Protection of Historical Buildings by Reversible Mixed Technologieso. To define the effectiveness of the proposed strengthening the testing procedure consisted of two main phases: testing of the original model and testing of the strengthened model. The observed seismic behavior and damage during each phase of the testing program were analyzed on the basis of the obtained experimental results.
