As a step towards the ultimate goal of a high-precision mass measurement of doubly-magic $^{100}$Sn, the mass of $^{103}$Sn was measured at the Low Energy Beam and Ion Trap (LEBIT) located at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). Utilizing the time-of-flight ion cyclotron resonance (ToF-ICR) technique, a mass uncertainty of 3.7~keV was achieved, an improvement by more than an order of magnitude compared to a recent measurement performed in 2023 at the Cooler Storage Ring (CSRe) in Lanzhou. Although the LEBIT and CSRe mass measurements of $^{103}$Sn are in agreement, they diverge from the experimental mass value reported in the 2016 version of the Atomic Mass Evaluation (AME2016), which was derived from the measured $Q_{\beta^+}$ value and the mass of $^{103}$In. In AME2020, this indirectly measured $^{103}$Sn mass was classified as a `seriously irregular mass' and replaced with an extrapolated value, which aligns with the most recent measured values from CSRe and LEBIT. As such, the smoothness of the mass surface is confidently reestablished for $^{103}$Sn. Furthermore, LEBIT's mass measurement of $^{103}$Sn enabled a significant reduction in the mass uncertainties of five parent isotopes which are now dominated by uncertainties in their respective $Q$-values.

Precise mass measurements of the $^{108, 110, 112, 114, 116}$Rh ground and isomeric states were performed using the Canadian Penning Trap at Argonne National Laboratory, showing a good agreement with recent JYFLTRAP measurements. A new possible isomeric state of $^{114}$Rh was also observed. These isotopes are part of the longest odd-odd chain of identical spin-parity assignment, of 1$^+$, spanning $^{104-118}$Rh, despite being in a region of deformation. Theoretical calculations were performed to explain this phenomenon. In addition, multiquasiparticle blocking calculations were conducted to study the configuration of low-lying states in the odd-odd Rh nuclei and elucidate the observed anomalous isomeric yield ratio of $^{114}$Rh.

Atomic masses are a foundational quantity in our understanding of nuclear structure, astrophysics and fundamental symmetries. The long-standing goal of creating a predictive global model for the binding energy of a nucleus remains a significant challenge, however, and prompts the need for precise measurements of atomic masses to serve as anchor points for model developments. We present precise mass measurements of neutron-rich Ru and Pd isotopes performed at the Californium Rare Isotope Breeder Upgrade facility at Argonne National Laboratory using the Canadian Penning Trap mass spectrometer. The masses of $^{108}$Ru, $^{110}$Ru and $^{116}$Pd were measured to a relative mass precision $\delta m/m \approx 10^{-8}$ via the phase-imaging ion-cyclotron-resonance technique, and represent an improvement of approximately an order of magnitude over previous measurements. These mass data were used in conjunction with the physically interpretable machine learning (PIML) model, which uses a mixture density neural network to model mass excesses via a mixture of Gaussian distributions. The Canadian Penning Trap mass spectrometer (CPT) has conducted precision mass measurements of neutron-rich nuclides from the CAlifornia Rare Isotope Breeder Upgrade (CARIBU) of the Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS) facility at Argonne National Laboratory using the Phase-Imaging Ion-Cyclotron-Resonance (PI-ICR) technique for over half a decade. We report precision mass measurements of $^{133}$Sb, $^{133g,m}$Te, and $^{133g,m}$I, produced at CARIBU at Argonne National Laboratory's ATLAS facility and measured using the Canadian Penning Trap mass spectrometer. These masses clarify an anomaly in the $^{133}$Te $\beta$-decay. The masses reported in the 2020 Atomic Mass Evaluation (M. Wang et al., 2021) produce $Q_{\beta^-}(^{133}$Te)=2920(6) keV; however, the highest-lying $^{133}$I level populated in this decay is observed at $E_i=2935.83(15)$ keV, resulting in an anomalous $Q_{\beta^{-}}^{i}=-16(6)$~keV. Our new measurements give $Q_{\beta^-}(^{133}\text{Te})=2934.8(11)$ keV, a factor of five more precise, yielding $Q{_\beta^i}=-1.0(12)$~keV, a 3$\sigma$ shift from the previous results. This resolves this anomaly, but indicates further anomalies in our understanding of the structure of this isotope., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The Beta-decay Paul Trap is an open-geometry, linear trap used to measure the decays of $^8$Li and $^8$B to search for a tensor contribution to the weak interaction. In the latest $^8$Li measurement of Burkey et al. (2022), $\beta$ scattering was the dominant experimental systematic uncertainty. The Beta-decay Paul Trap Mk IV reduces the prevalence of $\beta$ scattering by a factor of 4 through a redesigned electrode geometry and the use of glassy carbon and graphite as electrode materials. The trap has been constructed and successfully commissioned with $^8$Li in a new data campaign that collected 2.6 million triple coincidence events, an increase in statistics by 30% with 4 times less $\beta$ scattering compared to the previous $^8$Li data set., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

Nuclear mass measurements of isotopes are key to improving our understanding of nuclear structure across the chart of nuclides, in particular for the determination of the appearance or disappearance of nuclear shell closures. We present high-precision mass measurements of neutron-rich Ca, Ti and V isotopes performed at the TITAN and LEBIT facilities. These measurements were made using the TITAN multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MR-ToF-MS) and the LEBIT 9.4T Penning trap mass spectrometer. In total, 13 masses were measured, eight of which represent increases in precision over previous measurements. These measurements refine trends in the mass surface around $N = 32$ and $N = 34$, and support the disappearance of the $N = 32$ shell closure with increasing proton number. Mass measurements continue to provide invaluable information for elucidating nuclear structure and scenarios of astrophysical interest. The transition region between the $Z = 20$ and $28$ proton shell closures is particularly interesting due to the onset and evolution of nuclear deformation as nuclei become more neutron rich. This provides a critical testing ground for emerging ab-initio nuclear structure models. Here, we present high-precision mass measurements of neutron-rich chromium isotopes using the sensitive electrostatic Multiple-Reflection Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (MR-TOF-MS) at TRIUMF's Ion Trap for Atomic and Nuclear Science (TITAN) facility. Our high-precision mass measurements of $^{59, 61-63}$Cr confirm previous results, and the improved precision in measurements of $^{64-65}$Cr refine the mass surface beyond N=40. With the ab initio in-medium similarity renormalization group, we examine the trends in collectivity in chromium isotopes and give a complete picture of the N=40 island of inversion from calcium to nickel., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

Nuclear properties across the chart of nuclides are key to improving and validating our understanding of the strong interaction in nuclear physics. We present high-precision mass measurements of neutron-rich Fe isotopes performed at the TITAN facility. The multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MR-ToF-MS), achieving a resolving power greater than $600\,000$ for the first time, enabled the measurement of $^{63-70}$Fe, including first-time high-precision direct measurements ($\delta m/m \sim 10^{-7}$) of $^{68-70}$Fe, as well as the discovery of a long-lived isomeric state in $^{69}$Fe. These measurements are accompanied by both mean-field and ab initio calculations using the most recent realizations which enable theoretical assignment of the spin-parities of the $^{69}$Fe ground and isomeric states. Together with mean-field calculations of quadrupole deformation parameters for the Fe isotope chain, these results benchmark a maximum of deformation in the $N = 40$ island of inversion in Fe, and shed light on trends in level densities indicated in the newly-refined mass surface., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We report precision mass measurements of neutron-deficient gallium isotopes approaching the proton drip line. The measurements of $^{60-63}$Ga performed with the TITAN multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer provide a more than threefold improvement over the current literature mass uncertainty of $^{61}$Ga and mark the first direct mass measurement of $^{60}$Ga. The improved precision of the $^{61}$Ga mass has important implications for the astrophysical rp process, as it constrains essential reaction Q-values near the $^{60}$Zn waiting point. Based on calculations with a one-zone model, we demonstrate the impact of the improved mass data on prediction uncertainties of X-ray burst models. The first-time measurement of the $^{60}$Ga ground-state mass establishes the proton-bound nature of this nuclide; thus, constraining the location of the proton drip line along this isotopic chain. Including the measured mass of $^{60}$Ga further enables us to extend the evaluated $T=1$ isobaric multiplet mass equation up to $A=60$., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

We report high-precision mass measurements of $^{50-55}$Sc isotopes performed at the LEBIT facility at NSCL and at the TITAN facility at TRIUMF. Our results provide a substantial reduction of their uncertainties and indicate significant deviations, up to 0.7 MeV, from the previously recommended mass values for $^{53-55}$Sc. The results of this work provide an important update to the description of emerging closed-shell phenomena at neutron numbers $N=32$ and $N=34$ above proton-magic $Z=20$. In particular, they finally enable a complete and precise characterization of the trends in ground state binding energies along the $N=32$ isotone, confirming that the empirical neutron shell gap energies peak at the doubly-magic $^{52}$Ca. Moreover, our data, combined with other recent measurements, does not support the existence of closed neutron shell in $^{55}$Sc at $N=34$. The results were compared to predictions from both \emph{ab initio} and phenomenological nuclear theories, which all had success describing $N=32$ neutron shell gap energies but were highly disparate in the description of the $N=34$ isotone.

What is the average number of tosses needed before a particular sequence of heads and tails turns up? We solve the problem didactically, starting with doubles, finding that a tail, followed by a head, turns up on the average after only four tosses, while six tosses are needed for two successive heads. The method is extended to encompass the triples head-tail-tail and head-head-tail, but head-tail-head and head-head-head are surprisingly more recalcitrant. However, the general case is finally solved by a new algorithm that allows a simple computation that can be done by hand, even for relatively long strings. It is shown that the average number of tosses is always an even integer.

The rare-earth peak in the $r$-process abundance pattern depends sensitively on both the astrophysical conditions and subtle changes in nuclear structure in the region. This work takes an important step elucidating the nuclear structure and reducing the uncertainties in $r$-process calculations via precise atomic mass measurements at the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap. $^{158}$Nd, $^{160}$Pm, $^{162}$Sm, and $^{164-166}$Gd have been measured for the first time and the precisions for $^{156}$Nd, $^{158}$Pm, $^{162,163}$Eu, $^{163}$Gd, and $^{164}$Tb have been improved considerably. Nuclear structure has been probed via two-neutron separation energies $S_{2n}$ and neutron pairing energy metrics $D_n$. The data do not support the existence of a subshell closure at $N=100$. Neutron pairing has been found to be weaker than predicted by theoretical mass models. The impact on the calculated $r$-process abundances has been studied. Following up on a recent analysis of two cold atoms in a time-dependent harmonic trap in one dimension, we explore the entanglement entropy of two and three fermions in the same situation when driven through a parametric resonance. We find that the presence of such a resonance in the two-particle system leaves a clear imprint on the entanglement entropy. We show how the signal is modified by attractive and repulsive contact interactions, and how it remains present for the three-particle system. Motivated by advances in the manipulation and detection of ultracold atoms with multiple internal degrees of freedom, we present a finite-temperature lattice Monte Carlo calculation of the density and pressure equations of state, as well as Tan's contact, of attractively interacting SU(4)- and SU(6)-symmetric fermion systems in one spatial dimension. We also furnish a nonperturbative proof of a universal relation whereby quantities computable in the SU(2) case completely determine the virial coefficients of the SU($N_f$) case. These one-dimensional systems are appealing because they can be experimentally realized in highly constrained traps and because of the dominant role played by correlations. The latter are typically nonperturbative and are crucial for understanding ground states and quantum phase transitions. While quantum fluctuations are typically overpowered by thermal ones in one and two dimensions at any finite temperature, we find that quantum effects do leave their imprint in thermodynamic quantities. Our calculations show that the additional degrees of freedom, relative to the SU(2) case, provide a dramatic enhancement of the density and pressure (in units of their noninteracting counterparts) in a wide region around vanishing $\beta\mu$, where $\beta$ is the inverse temperature and $\mu$ the chemical potential. As shown recently in experiments, the thermodynamics we explore here can be measured in a controlled and precise fashion in highly constrained traps and optical lattices. We calculate the ground-state properties of unpolarized two-dimensional attractive fermions in the range from few to many particles. Using first-principles lattice Monte Carlo methods, we determine the ground-state energy, Tan's contact, momentum distribution, and single-particle correlation function. We investigate those properties for systems of $N=4,8,...,40$ particles and for a wide range of attractive couplings. As the attractive coupling is increased, the thermodynamic limit is reached at progressively lower $N$ due to the dominance of the two-body sector. At large momenta $k$, the momentum distribution displays the expected $k^{-4}$ behavior, but its onset shifts from $k \simeq 1.8 k^{}_F$ at weak coupling towards higher $k$ at strong coupling., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables

Motivated by the realization of hard-wall boundary conditions in experiments with ultracold atoms, we investigate the ground-state properties of spin-1/2 fermions with attractive interactions in a one-dimensional box. We use lattice Monte Carlo methods to determine essential quantities like the energy, which we compute as a function of coupling strength and particle number in the regime from few to many particles. Many-fermion systems bound by hard walls display non-trivial density profiles characterized by so-called Friedel oscillations (which are similar to those observed in harmonic traps). In non-interacting systems, the characteristic length scale of the oscillations is set by (2 kF)^(-1), where kF is the Fermi momentum, while repulsive interactions tend to generate Wigner-crystal oscillations of period (4 kF)^(-1). Based on the non-interacting result, we find a remarkably simple parametrization of the density profiles of the attractively interacting case, which we generalize to the one-body density matrix. While the total momentum is not a conserved quantity in the presence of hard walls, the magnitude of the momentum does provide a good quantum number. We are therefore able to provide a detailed characterization of the (quasi-)momentum distribution, which displays rather robust discontinuity at the Fermi surface. In addition, we determine the spatially varying on-site density-density correlation, which in turn yields Tan's contact density and, upon integration, Tan's contact. As is well known, the latter fully determines the short-range correlations and plays a crucial role in a multitude of equilibrium and non-equilibrium sum rules., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures. We present finite-temperature, lattice Monte Carlo calculations of the particle number density, compressibility, pressure, and Tan's contact of an unpolarized system of short-range, attractively interacting spin-1/2 fermions in one spatial dimension, i.e., the Gaudin-Yang model. In addition, we compute the second-order virial coefficients for the pressure and the contact, both of which are in excellent agreement with the lattice results in the low-fugacity regime. Our calculations yield universal predictions for ultracold atomic systems with broad resonances in highly constrained traps. We cover a wide range of couplings and temperatures and find results that support the existence of a strong-coupling regime in which the thermodynamics of the system is markedly different from the noninteracting case. Digital image correlation of laser-ablated platinum nanoparticles on the surface of a polycrystalline metal (nickel-based superalloy Rene 88DT) was used to obtain the local strain behavior from an in situ scanning electron microscope tensile experiment at room temperature. By fusing this information with crystallographic orientations from EBSD, a subsequent analysis shows that the average maximum shear strain tends to increase with increasing Schmid factor. Additionally, the range of the extreme values for the maximum shear strain also increases closer to the grain boundary, signifying that grain boundaries and triple junctions accumulate plasticity at strains just beyond yield in polycrystalline Rene 88DT. This study examines the depictions of organizational life appearing in popular training films. The study argues that little cultural attention has been paid to Human Resource Development (HRD), which has become a multi-billion dollar industry shaping employees' behaviors, knowledge and values. In addition, this study extends the interpretive approach to organizational communication, thus making the study of organizational life a legitimate interest for organizational culture researchers. The study relied on semiotic theory to analyze the codes of 14 HRD videos selected from a training film event at the American Society for Training and Development's national conference. Theoretical attention is given to Roland Barthes' semiology. The following codes are found to shape the production of meaning in training videos: codes of dramatic and presentational narratives, codes of learning and modeling, codes of neutrality, codes of familiarity, codes of sophistication and entertainment, and codes of opposition.
