- Abstract
Objective The current study aimed to examine the neural correlates of processing genuine compared with posed emotional expressions, in depressed and healthy subjects using a novel functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) paradigm Method During fMRI scanning, sixteen depressed patients and ten healthy controls performed an Emotion Categorisation Task, whereby participants were asked to distinguish between genuine and non-genuine (posed or neutral) facial displays of happiness and sadness. Results Compared to controls, the depressed group showed greater activation whilst processing genuine versus posed facial displays of sadness, in the left medial orbitofrontal cortex, caudate and putamen. The depressed group also showed greater activation whilst processing genuine facial displays of sadness relative to neutral displays, in the bilateral medial frontal/orbitofrontal cortex, left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, right dorsal anterior cingulate, bilateral posterior cingulate, right superior parietal lobe, left lingual gyrus and cuneus. No differences were found between the two groups for happy facial displays. Limitations Relatively small sample sizes and due to the exploratory nature of the study, no correction was made for multiple comparisons. Conclusion The findings of this exploratory study suggest that depressed individuals may show a different pattern of brain activation in response to genuine versus posed facial displays of sadness, compared to healthy individuals. This may have important implications for future studies that wish to examine the neural correlates of facial emotion processing in depression.

21. The stratigraphy and sedimentology of the Dunscombe Mudstone Formation (late Triassic) of south-west England

Earth Sciences - Abstract
The mid to late Triassic Mercia Mudstone Group exposed on the east Devon coast between Sidmouth and Seaton consists of c. 450 m of predominantly red mudstones that were deposited in low-relief sabkha environments in hot deserts. In marked contrast to this, the Dunscombe Mudstone Formation in the middle part of the group consists of 35-40 m of interbedded and interlaminated green, purple and grey mudstones, breccias, muddy limestones and lenticular siltstones/sandstones that were deposited in a wetter, possibly cooler climate. The formation is poorly exposed inland, but the striking colour difference from that of the adjacent formations enables its outcrop to be traced more or less continuously from the Devon to Somerset coasts. A detailed study of the sedimentology and ichnology of the formation, in particular that of laterally impersistent arenaceous members in its lower part, has shown that it was deposited in a succession of shallow, freshwater lakes in a low-relief topography that was at times crossed by broad shallow distributary channels. A combination of palynology and magnetostratigraphy is interpreted to represent that the Dunscombe Mudstone Formation is a condensed succession that occupied most of the late Triassic Carnian Stage, about 11.5 million years. It was deposited at a time of active tectonic subsidence, as a result of which it is laterally highly variable in thickness. In its extensive subcrop in the Wessex and Bristol Channel basins it locally reaches over 150 m in thickness in the more rapidly subsiding graben areas by the addition of halite. The northern boundary of the depositional area roughly followed the Variscan Front, along the line of the present-day Mendip Hills and South Wales coast.

Single-particle spectra and two-particle correlation functions measured by the NA49 collaboration in central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 GeV/nucleon are presented. These measurements are used to study the kinetic and chemical freeze-out conditions in heavy ion collisions. The two-proton correlation function at midrapidity from Pb+Pb central collisions at 158 AGeV has been measured by the NA49 experiment. The results are compared to model predictions from static thermal Gaussian proton source distributions and transport models RQMD and VENUS. An effective proton source size is determined by minimizing CHI-square/ndf between the correlation functions of the data and those calculated for the Gaussian sources, yielding 3.85 +-0.15(stat.) +0.60-0.25(syst.) fm. Both the RQMD and the VENUS model are consistent with the data within the error in the correlation peak region.

Nuclear Theory ,Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
Strangeness measurements in NA49 indicate a strangeness enhancement in Pb + Pb interactions, relative to the elementary nucleon-nucleon and nucleon-nucleus collisions. It appears that the magnitude of the enhancement is similar in Pb + Pb and S + nucleus collisions. The enhancement is present in almost every central Pb + Pb collision, the dynamical fluctuations (in strangeness) appear to be minimal. The magnitude of the enhancement increases with the strangeness content of the particle species. The inverse slope systematics indicate the presence of transverse flow in the system. The cascade/lambda ratio is increased relative to elementary collisions.

Net proton and negative hadron spectra for central PbPb collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon at the CERN SPS were measured and compared to spectra from lighter systems. Net baryon distributions were derived from those of net protons, utilizing model calculations of isospin contributions as well as data and model calculations of strange baryon distributions. Stopping (rapidity shift with respect to the beam) and mean transverse momentum meanpt of net baryons increase with system size. The rapidity density of negative hadrons scales with the number of participant nucleons for nuclear collisions, whereas their meanpt is independent of system size. The meanpt dependence upon particle mass and system size is consistent with larger transverse flow velocity at midrapidity for PbPb compared to SS central collisions.

The NA49 experiment is able to measure the production of neutral strange baryons and mesons along with other hadronic species in Pb+Pb collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon. These strange particles are an important piece of evidence in the search for the quark-gluon plasma. They have been reconstructed from their charged products recorded in the experiment-s time projection chambers. A new round of data production has been undertaken with improved software, allowing the reconstruction of neutral strange particles over a rapidity interval covering both sides of mid-rapidity. The procedures used to obtain this sample are outlined and a comparison of the phase space coverage with respect to previous measurements is made.

The large acceptance TPCs of the NA49 spectrometer allow for a systematic multidimensional study of two-particle correlations in different part of phase space. Results from Bertsch-Pratt and Yano-Koonin-Podgoretskii parametrizations are presented differentially in transverse pair momentum and pair rapidity. These studies give an insight into the dynamical space-time evolution of relativistic Pb+Pb collisions, which is dominated by longitudinal expansion.

The composition of forward-going projectile spectator matter in fixed-target Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A ˇ GeV at the CERN SPS has been studied as a function of centrality. The data were measured with the NA49 veto calorimeter. We observe that forward-going spectator matter in central collisions consists of 9 neutrons, 7 protons, and half a deuteron on average. At large impact parameters most spectator nucleons are bound in fragments. The relative resolution of the average impact parameter derived from the measurement of spectator neutrons is roughly 19 percent in the range from zero to half maximum impact parameters.

Two-particle correlation functions of negative hadrons over wide phase space, and transverse mass spectra of negative hadrons and deuterons near mid-rapidity have been measured in central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon by the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS. A novel Coulomb correction procedure for the negative two-particle correlations is employed making use of the measured oppositely charged particle correlation. Within an expanding source scenario these results are used to extract the dynamic characteristics of the hadronic source, resolving the ambiguities between the temperature and transverse expansion velocity of the source, that are unavoidable when single and two particle spectra are analysed separately. The source shape, the total duration of the source expansion, the duration of particle emission, the freeze-out temperature and the longitudinal and transverse expansion velocities are deduced.

The directed and elliptic flow of protons and charged pions has been observed from the semi-central collisions of a 158 GeV/nucleon Pb beam with a Pb target. The rapidity and transverse momentum dependence of the flow has been measured. The directed flow of the pions is opposite to that of the protons but both exhibit negative flow at low pt. The elliptic flow of both is fairly independent of rapidity but rises with pt.

he NA49 experiment uses four large volume TPCs with pad readout (182000 electronics channel) for the large acceptance study of Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN SPS. A new, low-mass technique was developed for the construction of field cage and gasbox. Unconventional gas mixtures like Ne/CO_2 (90/10) and Ar/CO_2/CH_4 (90/5/5) are used at drift velocities of 1.3 and 2.3 cm/mis in the unsaturated regime. Excellent stability of gas amplification and drift velocity has been achieved by putting particular emphasis on the control and understanding of all operational aspects.

We report measurements of $\Xi$ and $\bar{\Xi}$ hyperon absolute yields as a function of rapidity in 158 GeV/c Pb+Pb collisions. At midrapidity, dN/dy = 2.29 +/- 0.12 for $\Xi$, and 0.52 +/- 0.05 for $\bar{\Xi}$, leading to the ratio of $\bar{\Xi}$/$\Xi$ = 0.23 +/- 0.03. Inverse slope parameters fitted to the measured transverse mass spectra are of the order of 300 MeV near mid-rapidity. The estimated total yield of $\Xi$ particles in Pb+Pb central interactions amounts to 7.4 +/- 1.0 per collision. Comparison to $\Xi$ production in properly scaled p+p reactions at the same energy reveals a dramatic enhancement (about one order of magnitude) of $\Xi$ production in Pb+Pb central collisions over elementary hadron interactions. We report measurements of $\Xi$ and $\bar{\Xi}$ hyperon absolute yields as a function of rapidity in 158 GeV/c Pb+Pb collisions. - Abstract
Acute tryptophan depletion (ATD) studies have shown that serotonin plays a role in learning and memory processes. In this study, we performed a pooled analysis of nine ATD studies in order to examine the nature of the memory-impairing effects of ATD and mediating factors, such as gender, age and vulnerability for disease in which disturbed serotonin was hypothesized to play a role. All studies that were used in this pooled analysis assessed declarative episodic memory using a verbal learning task paradigm. Immediate recall, delayed recall, and delayed recognition scores were examined. A total of 211 participants were included in the analysis. The analysis revealed that ATD impaired not only delayed recall, but also immediate recall. The ATD-induced impairments were larger in females than in males. Furthermore, ATD did not interact with any other serotonergic vulnerability and age. This suggests that the only factor that actually has the properties of a serotonergic vulnerability factor for declarative memory performance is female gender. The findings provide further support for a critical role of serotonin in declarative episodic memory.

The large acceptance time projection chambers of the NA49 experiment are used to record the trajectory of charged particles from Pb-Pb collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon. Neutral strange hadrons have been reconstructed from their charged decay products. To obtain distributions of lambda, anti-lambda and k0-short in discrete bins of rapidity, y, and transverse momentum, pT, calculations have been performed to determine the acceptance of the detector and the efficiency of the reconstruction software as a function of both variables. The lifetime distributions obtained give values of ct=7.8+-0.6 cm for lambda and ct=2.5+-0.3 cm for k0-short, consistent with data book values.

Preliminary inclusive spectra for K^+, K^-, K^0_s, Lambda, and overline{;Lambda}; are presented which were measured in central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon by the NA49 experiment. A comparison with data from lighter collision systems shows a strong change of the shape of the Lambda rapidity distribution. The strangeness enhancement observed in S+S compared to p+p and p+A is not further increased in Pb+Pb.
