2. EVALUATION OF HEADSTART EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM IN CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS. FINAL REPORT.

Abstract

BEGINNING WITH A REVIEW OF THE NURSERY SCHOOL MOVEMENT (FROEBEL, MONTESSORI, AND MCMILLAN,) THIS EVALUATION RELATES THE HISTORICAL MATERIAL TO HEAD START, SPECIFICALLY IN CAMBRIDGE MASS. DURING THE SUMMER OF 1965, MATCHED GROUPS OF 33 HEAD START CHILDREN AND 33 NON-HEAD START CHILDREN (CONTROL GROUP) WERE STUDIED. SCHOOL PRE-REGISTRATION LISTS PROVIDED NAMES AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC INFORMATION FOR BOTH THE HEAD START CHILDREN AND THE CONTROL GROUP CHILDREN. BOTH GROUPS WERE TESTED DURING THE TWO WEEKS BETWEEN THE CLOSE OF HEAD START SESSIONS AND THE FIRST DAY OF PUBLIC SCHOOL. SCORES ON MEASUREMENT INSTRUMENTS WERE ANALYZED ON THE BASIS OF (1) SEX, (2) MOTHER'S EDUCATIONAL LEVEL, AND (3) FAMILY INCOME LEVEL. THE MEASURE OF LEARNING RATE AS DETERMINED BY THE SEGUIN FORM BOARD WAS THE MOST CONSISTENT IN SHOWING DIFFERENCES RESULTING FROM HEAD START INTERVENTION. THE CHIEF DIFFERENCE SEEMS TO BE THAT HEAD START EXPERIENCE AIDED A CHILD IN ATTACKING LEARNING TASKS. FOLLOW-UP RESEARCH IS NEEDED INTO HEALTH, SOCIAL CASE WORK, EFFECTS ON FORMAL SCHOOLING, AND EVALUATION AND REFINEMENT OF THE PROGRAM. (LG)

14. Middle Ear Disease and the Practice of Pediatrics: Burden During the First Five Years of Life

Abstract

To determine the burden on pediatricians imposed by disease of the middle ear, we analyzed data from 2,570 children followed up prospectively since birth. Disease of the middle ear accounted for a large proportion of all visits made during the first five years of life, rising from 22.7% during the first year to about 40% in years 4 and 5. About one visit in three made for illness of any kind resulted in the diagnosis of disease of the middle ear. Approximately three fourths of all visits to follow up any illness were made to follow up disease of the middle ear. Disease of the middle ear was diagnosed at between 5% and 10% of all well-baby visits. Children from private practice averaged fewer visits for all reasons than did children using a large neighborhood health center, but the proportions of visits accounted for by disease of the middle ear were similar in both settings.(JAMA 1983;249:1026-1029)

Abstract

The article talks about the municipal health services in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The author believes that the outcome of municipal health services will depend upon the ability of municipal services to define their goals and the ability to deliver these services with sensitivity and excellence. Municipal hospitals, which have traditionally offered a full range of medical and surgical services, need not and probably should not offer all the highly technical, costly and infrequently utilized services that are available in the teaching hospitals in large cities. The author recounts his experience, since joining the staff of the Cambridge City Hospital in 1964.

Abstract

The article reports on the development of a model for the reorganization of child health services within an urban community by researchers from Cambridge, Massachusetts. The many shortcomings of contemporary medical care have received much attention in recent years. Efforts to provide improved care have often resulted in greater fragmentation, duplication, and cost. The increasing lack of physicians available to large urban populations has led to a dramatic rise in the number of patient visits to hospital outpatient departments and emergency wards. In response to these concerns, a coordinated system of health care for children has been designed.
