3. Multifunctional Supramolecular Gels with Strong Mechanical Properties Formed by Self-Assembly of Polyoxometalate-Based Coordination Polymers

Abstract

Metallogels built in a bottom-up approach by metal coordination and supramolecular interactions have important potential for the elaboration of smart materials. In this context, we present here the formation of supramolecular coordination polymers driven by the complexation of cobalt(II) or zinc(II) ions with polyoxometalate-based hybrids displaying two terpyridine ligands in a linear arrangement. Thanks to the electrostatic interactions between the polyoxometalate cores and metal nodes, the polymer chains self-assemble into fibers that physically cross-link to form gels above a critical concentration. Using spectroscopy, microscopy, X-ray scattering, and rheometry, complemented by molecular dynamics simulations, we investigated the supramolecular organization of the chains in the fibers and the resulting processes leading to gelation. Compared to previously reported systems, these gels have improved rheological features and appealing properties, such as birefringence, luminescence, and spin crossover, paving the way for their use as building blocks for multifunctional smart materials.

4. Transforming Nanocrystals into Superhard Boron Carbide Nanostructures

Abstract

Boron carbide (B4+δC) possesses a large potential as a structural material owing to its lightness, refractory character, and outstanding mechanical properties. However, its large-scale industrialization is set back by its tendency to amorphize when subjected to an external stress. In the present work, we design a path toward nanostructured boron carbide with greatly enhanced hardness and resistance to amorphization. The reaction pathway consists of triggering an isomorphic transformation of covalent nanocrystals of Na1–xB5–xC1+x(x= 0.18) produced in molten salts. The resulting 10 nm B4.1C nanocrystals exhibit a 4-fold decrease of size compared to previous works. Solid-state 11B and 13C NMR coupled to density functional theory (DFT) reveal that the boron carbide nanocrystals are made of a complex mixture of atomic configurations, which are located at the covalent structural chains between B11C icosahedral building units. These nanocrystals are combined with a spark plasma-sintering-derived method operated at high pressure. This yields full densification while maintaining the particle size. The nanoscaled grains and high density of grain boundaries provide the resulting nanostructured bodies with significantly enhanced hardness and resistance to amorphization, thus delivering a superhard material.

Abstract

Contrary to molecular species, only very few solids are reported to host manganese (V) species. Herein, we report three new compounds with a hydroxyapatite structural backbone built on the MnVO4 3− anion: Sr5[(Mn1−xSix)O4]3(OH)1−3x (x = 0 and 0.053), Sr5(MnO4)3(OH)1−yFy (y = 0.90), and Sr5[(Mn1−xSix)- O4]3F1−3x (x = 0.058). These solids are fully characterized using powder X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, scanning transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), thermogravimetric analysis, and magnetic measurements. Especially, we report for the first time EELS Mn−L2,3 spectra of manganese with the oxidation state (V). Contrary to other Mn(V) oxides, these solids and the nominal compound Sr5(MnO4)3OH do not comprise Ba2+ cations but rely only on Sr2+ cations, showing that barium is not a required element to stabilize Mn(V) species in inorganic solids. We show that by tuning soft chemistry conditions on the one hand and post-treatment topological transformation conditions on the other hand, Mn(V) and hydroxyl groups can be substituted by Si(IV) and fluoride ions, respectively. Hence, we deliver solids with a potentially wide composition range. Abstract

Mixed‐anion compounds widen the chemical space of attainable materials compared to single anionic compounds, but the exploration of their structural diversity is limited by common synthetic paths. Especially, oxychlorides rely mainly on layered structures, which suffer from low stability during photo(electro)catalytic processes. Herein we report a strategy to design a new polar 3D tetrahedral framework with composition Zn4Si2O7Cl2. We use a molten salt medium to enable low temperature crystallization of nanowires of this new compound, by relying on tetrahedral building units present in the melt to build the connectivity of the oxychloride. These units are combined with silicon‐based connectors from a non‐oxidic Zintl phase to enable precise tuning of the oxygen content. This structure brings high chemical and thermal stability, as well as strongly anisotropic hole mobility along the polar axis. These features, associated with the ability to adjust the transport properties by doping, enable to tune water splitting properties for photoelectrocatalytic H2 evolution and water oxidation. 27. Metal–Support Interactions in Pt-WO3Heterostructures: Role of WO3Polymorphism

Abstract

Ionic exchange under soft conditions yields nanoplatelets of tungsten bronzes with an original crystal structure doped with cobalt, copper, platinum, and cesium cations (h′-MxWO3). The optimal orientation of the tunnel-based crystal structure, perpendicular to the basal plane of the nanoplatelets, facilitates cation exchange so that the dopant cations are located inside the (WO6)6channels, as evidenced by scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy. This synthetic pathway allows one to obtain not only doped materials but also metallic nanoparticles supported over h′-WO3nanoplatelets after reduction. Consequently, this approach opens a route to target new hexagonal bronze compositions. We have used this approach to design Pt nanoparticles supported over the two known hexagonal WO3polymorphs: h′-WO3and h-WO3. By using the catalysis of CO oxidation as a probe, we highlight differences in the metal–support interaction on these Pt-WO3heterostructures, especially higher electron transfer from the newly discovered h′-WO3framework.

Abstract

International audience; Incorporating boride nanocrystals could significantly impact the mechanical properties of aluminum alloys. Molten salts synthesis offers opportunities to fabricate superhard boride nanoparticles, which can sustain the harsh conditions during the liquid-phase design of metallic nanocomposites. Here hafnium diboride-aluminum nanocomposites are unveiled from molten salt-derived HfB2 nanoparticles sequentially dispersed in aluminum by ultrasound treatment. The structure and size of the nanocrystals are retained in the final nanocomposites, supporting their high chemical stability. Semicoherent interfaces between the nanoparticles and the matrix are then evidenced by TEM, suggesting that the nanocrystals could promote heterogeneous nucleation of Al and then limit the Al grain size to ≈20 µm. Nanoindentation measurements reveal significant grain boundary strengthening and grain refinement effects. It is finally shown that HfB2 nanoparticles also enable a decrease in matrix grain size and an increase in the hardness of the AlSi7Cu0.5Mg0.3 alloy. These proof-of-concept materials are paving the way to light-weight Al matrix nanocomposites doped by molten-salt synthesized nanoparticles.

Abstract

Fast degradation and complete mineralization of herbicide dalapon (DPN) as the target pollutant has been investigated for the first time by the heterogeneous photoelectro-Fenton (hPEF) process using a nitrogen doped reduced graphene oxide (NrGO) modified carbon felt (CF) cathode (NrGO@CF) and a ternary nanocomposite catalyst (TNC) based on reduced graphene oxide (rGO), Fe 3 O 4 , and TiO 2 to maintain high yield generation of H 2 O 2 and •OH. The effects of main variables, including the catalyst composition and amount, applied current, and initial pH of the solution, were investigated. The as-synthesized nanomaterials exhibit significant improvements thanks to their high specific surface area, increased H 2 O 2 production, catalytic activity, and the possibility to work in a wide pH range. This system also promotes photoreduction and photooxidation reactions by increasing photon absorption. By combining highly conductive carbon materials and the photoexcited electrons from TiO 2 , redox cycling between ≡ F e I I and ≡ F e I I I was facilitated, thus improving the process performance. Catalytic stability measurements show that the use of a NrGO@CF cathode, an equimass rGO-Fe 3 O 4 -TiO 2 TNC and boron doped diamond (BDD) anode trio resulted in the fast degradation and complete mineralization of DPN within 30 and 60 minutes, respectively, after five consecutive cycles under UV light irradiation, 500 mA current intensity, 0.1 g L−1 catalyst concentration and pH 6 conditions. Moreover, intermediate products of DPN oxidation were identified. Therefore, this study highlights an efficient and stable cathode and catalyst duo for the removal of a short chain halogenated aliphatic herbicide from aqueous media.
