This paper presents a high-sensitivity passive wireless humidity sensor system with a portable telemetry unit for applications in sealed environments. A complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) interdigital capacitive humidity sensor die was attached to an organic substrate (FR-4) on which a fixed planar spiral copper inductor was fabricated. The variable capacitor and the fixed inductor were wire bonded to form an inductor–capacitor ( LC ) tank circuit. The resonant frequency of the sensor tank is dependent on the sensor capacitance, which changes in response to the humidity. The sensitivity of the capacitive sensor was improved significantly using graphene oxide as a sensing material. The package-level integration was achieved by employing the embedded inductor on an organic packaging substrate. The LC -type sensor is interrogated wirelessly using our homemade portable telemetry unit, which is based on a standing wave ratio bridge to measure the real part of the readout coil impedance. Measurements show a sensitivity of −18.75 kHz/%RH over a range of 15%–95% RH. The implemented telemetry unit addresses the need for a low-cost, portable, and universal reader of the LC -type passive wireless sensors. [2013-0188]

The modern world is increasingly reliant on technology and consequently the systems which power it. Portable power systems are used in a wide variety of applications to varying degrees of success. Within the power range of 10 – 5000W the current power systems are not adequately ‘portable’. Thus the aim of this thesis is to recommend chosen portable power systems which are best suited to certain portable power applications.A comprehensive, critical analysis of relevant portable power systems; micro combustion engines, fuel cells and batteries has led to accurate recommendations being made on the benefits of each in various portable power applications of unmanned aerial vehicles, military services, personal electronics and portable generators. An extensive literature review has been undertaken and research compiled on the previously stated portable power applications and portable power systems. From this research, a relevant assessment framework was created to perform a comparative analysis of each power system. Using a multi-criteria decision making analytical hierarchy process, a matrix of criteria necessary for portable power applications was made presenting weightings for each criteria, quantifying their importance. A ranking system was defined to enable each power systems features in relation to each stated criteria to be ranked. Multiplying the weightings and rankings together resulted in weighted rankings for each power system in relation to each portable power application.Analysing the results obtained from the assessment framework indicated that micro combustion engines were best suited to all portable power applications. Batteries were a close second in all applications and fuel cells ranked significantly lower than both of these systems in all applications. Whilst micro combustion engines are not currently commercially available, they have incredible potential in the portable power market, and if research and improvements continue they will be a preferred choice to a battery in future. Currently batteries are still the best product on the market for portable power applications due to their maturity and commercial success. It is recommended that in future the further criteria be established and a wider range of rankings used to improve the accuracy of results. It is also recommended that in future the data the rankings are based off be updated, as fuel cells and micro combustion engines are a quickly improving technology whose features will change in future.

Telemetry data frame structure is complicated and changeable, so telemetry pre-processing software cannot be universal. To solve this problem, a component method was proposed in this paper, which can effectively compensate for the deficiencies of the traditional method. XML files were employed to configure telemetry parameters, including the information of appropriate processing method for data processing. Based-on memory-mapped telemetry source data extraction can greatly improve source extraction speed, and data integrity is guaranteed by sub-frame data fusion. Subsequent telemetry software developing shows that the method can improve the reusability of pre-processing module and shorten the system development time.

Research is underway to develop instruments and methods to determine the activity of radionuclides present in the fallout debris from the detonation of a radiological dispersal device (RDD). Handheld instruments, including commonly used health physics survey instruments, have been incorporated into a portable telemetry kit containing a global positioning system receiver, WiFi and radio communications, and a small microcomputer to facilitate data processing, logging, and transmission. An operator carries the system and walks through the RDD post-blast environment, real-time radiological data is logged, stored locally, and transmitted to a base station outside of the RDD hot zone. A map of the distributed radiological dispersal is generated, subdividing the world into 1-m2 squares. Separate measurements of ground activity taken at a finite number of discrete locations is used to cross-correlate the survey data, transforming the health physics data (e.g., mrem hr−1) to surface activity (Bq m−2). The map data, smoothed using standard Kriging approaches, is then analyzed by summing each discrete square area, producing an estimate for the total dispersed ground activity. The instrumentation and method have been field tested multiple times at Idaho National Laboratory during field exercises using short-lived radionuclides detonated in small-scale experiments.

Measurement of the energy cost of walking in children with cerebral palsy or spina bifida is difficult due to the cumbersome nature of equipment used to assess oxygen consumption. Such information collected with a lightweight telemetric system, the Cosmed K2, correlated well with that from a non-portable breath-by-breath system associated with a treadmill. The K2 did not significantly affect regular gait pattern as measured by gait analysis, and repeatability was satisfactory. Measurement of the energy cost of walking in the individual is unreliable in detecting differences of less than 10%; comparison between groups is more useful.

Mini Mobile Telemetry System is a ruggedized pc with three screens which the receiver board, the decommutator board and the GPS time generator board has placed in. Customized panels are used for RF, GPS signal inputs and serial data outputs for the flexible operational usage of the system. Various types of antennas are used for different operational scenarios. Mini Mobile Telemetry System which is designed and configured for special needs of TAI Turkish Aerospace Industries Inc., serves for three main purposes. The first purpose of the system is to serve such a portable telemetry station which one person could transport, install and operate on field easily. System could support up to three flight test engineers with customized displays which could be enough for a low risk test flight without occupying huge telemetry ground station. The second purpose of the system is to have the chance for to be fixed in a mid-size A/C such a flying test bed. The real time visualization of data which is gathered from the vehicle under test during a flight test is possible. There will be no problem about the target range in reasonable ranges and LOS on the A/C that chase the vehicle under test with proper antenna installation. The third purpose of the system is to serve such a flying relay station for scenarios that LOS or range limits between ground station and vehicle under test could not be achieved. Such maneuvers performed at low altitude or out of range for receiving antenna on ground could be examples.

In recent years, with the boom of BCI (brain-computer interface, BCI) research, a multitude of researchers have begun to study control system based on BCI. However, the existing brain control systems still have some problems: bulky acquisition devices, cumbersome to use, expensive and difficult to communicate. So it is difficult for the existing brain control systems to be used in situations such as wearable artificial limbs and battlefield equipment, which needs portable control device. Based on the above issues, portable brain control technology is researched and a portable brain control system is proposed, which uses a portable EEG acquisition device, a miniaturization signal processing system, Bluetooth communication technology and micro-drive control circuit to make the control system portable, so that the brain control systems can be more widely used.

This paper describes an electronic system for telemetry and control applications of distributed systems. It consists of a portable electronic circuit (portable module) that can be connected up to various types of sensors depending on the application to be used in each case, together with a mobile-telephony communications system. Different portable modules can be used to build up a communication network governed by a central control unit (personal computer and communications system); communication can be established from the control centre with any portable module for sending or receiving information; it is also possible to modify the application programme executed in each portable module by the teleprogramming of the microcontroller system built into the latter circuit. Two applications of the network as set up are shown: analysis and transmission of a patient's electrocardiogram and the sending of a low-resolution video signal.

In these times of Faster, Better, Cheaper (FBC) spacecraft, Spacecraft Operations Automation is an area that is targeted by many Operations Teams. To meet the challenges of the FBC environment, the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) Operations Team designed and quickly implemented two new low-cost technologies: one which monitors spacecraft telemetry, checks the status of the telemetry, and contacts technical experts by pager when any telemetry datapoints exceed alarm limits, and a second which allows quick and convenient remote access to data displays. The first new technology is Automatic Alarm Notification (AAN). AAN monitors spacecraft telemetry and will notify engineers automatically if any telemetry is received which creates an alarm condition. The second new technology is Web Telemetry Display (WTD). WTD captures telemetry displays generated by the flight telemetry system and makes them available to the project web server. This allows engineers to check the health and status of the spacecraft from any computer capable of connecting to the global internet, without needing normally-required specialized hardware and software. Both of these technologies have greatly reduced operations costs by alleviating the need to have operations engineers monitor spacecraft performance on a 24 hour per day, 7 day per week basis from a central Mission Support Area. This paper gives details on the design and implementation of AAN and WTD, discusses their limitations, and lists the ongoing benefits which have accrued to MGS Flight Operations since their implementation in late 1996.

This paper presents a passive wireless humidity sensor based on graphene oxide and its associated portable telemetry unit. The sensor consists of a CMOS interdigital capacitive humidity-sensitive sensor die and a fixed planar spiral inductor on an organic substrate (FR-4), forming an inductor-capacitor (LC) tank circuit. The resonant frequency of the tank is dependent on the sensor capacitance, which changes in response to the humidity. The sensitivity of the sensor is improved significantly by using graphene oxide as sensing material. The sensor is interrogated wirelessly by using our homemade portable telemetry unit. The reader is based on a standing wave ratio (SWR) bridge to measure the real part of the readout coil impedance, thus addressing the need for a low-cost, portable reader for the LC-type passive wireless sensors. Measurements show a sensitivity of -18.75 kHz/%RH over a range of 15-90% RH.

We propose to leverage UHF RFID techniques to yield a continuously wearable, battery-free wireless multichannel ECG telemetry device that is potentially disposable, low-cost and suitable for integration with multiple electrodes in a flexible circuit assembly. Such a device could have broad applicability, ranging from initial patient assessment by first responders, to continuous monitoring in various clinical settings. We employ a recently described single-chip data acquisition system including RF power harvesting to eliminate the need for a battery. The single-chip system includes 14 channels of integrated biopotential amplification, an 11-bit ADC, and a 5 Mbps digital backscatter telemetry link. We present an initial characterization of the telemetry chip in this application including battery-free, wireless 3 and 5 channel ECG recordings made from an ambulatory human subject at a range of ≈ 1 meter.

The results presented show that the telemetry system described is convenient for transferring analog biomedical signals for a wide range of physiological parameters, even with low-cost standard communication media. The system developed is independent of the types and models of the signal-generating medical devices and is able to communicate worldwide over a broad range of communication medias. The results also show that there are differences in the transmission capacity among the communication media. These practical as well as theoretical differences are important for proper selection of communication devices. Anticipated activity in the field of communication technology (devices and protocols) towards higher data rates and lower costs is expected to further increase system performance. >

Telemetry is an important function of the Internet of Things as it is being developed and deployed today. Of particular interest within this area are energy monitoring services. In this paper we describe Watts App, a social telemetry gathering and comparison platform, which was built as a demonstrator that integrates technologies from embedded systems to mobile applications. We used the SNMP protocol stack developed for the Contiki embedded operating system to retrieve telemetry information from a hardware interface that reads data from S0 meters (e.g., power meters, fluid meters). A web interface and an Android mobile application lets users view this data. To ensure privacy of users' data, it is only stored at users' own premises and all communication takes place over encrypted connections. This paper provides an overview of the implementation of Watts App.

Rotary position sensors are widely used in many applications that require precise shaft unlimited rotation: including control systems, robotics and AR (Augmented Reality) systems. However, traditional data acquisition system is often a PC-based (Personal Computer-based) one with complex structures and complicated electrical connections, which means that the system has limited application for its size as well as its poor portability. That is a main drawback, especially for AR system in which the user is supposed to walk freely. In this paper, a novel portable data acquisition system (PDAS) based on USB interface technology with a succinct hardware structure is proposed. Implemented on an 8051-based microcontroller AT89C5131, the proposed system can receive signal from optical encoder, decode the signal and transfer the data to the computer through USB interface. The experimental results show that this system can provide the possibility to realize portable and improve performance of AR, which demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed system.

With an ever increasing need for assessment of neurophysiological activity in connection with injury and basic research, the demand for an efficient and reliable data acquisition system rises. Brain-machine interfaces is one class of such systems that targets the central nervous system. A necessary step in the development of a brain-machine interface is to design and implement a reliable and efficient measurement system for neurophysiological signals. The use of telemetric devices increases the flexibility of the devices in terms of subject mobility and unobtrusiveness of the equipment. In this paper, we present a complete system architecture for a wearable telemetry system for the acquisition of neurophysiological data. The system has been miniaturized and implemented using surface-mount technology. System performance has been successfully verified and bottlenecks in the architecture have been identified.

This paper presents a novel ECG telemetry system based on Z-Wave communication protocol. The proposed system consists of small portable devices that acquire, compress and transmit the ECG to a RF-USB interface connected to a central monitoring computer. The received signals are filtered, QRS complexes and P and T waves are localized, and different waveforms are classified in order to be able to provide diagnosis tools like heart rate variability and turbulence analysis. Due to the limitation of communication bandwidth, the maximum number of measuring devices connected to a central monitor is four. The proposed system composed of inexpensive components can serve as flexible alternative to current ECG monitoring systems.
