Search

MICADO is a first light instrument for the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), set to start operating later this decade. It will provide diffraction limited imaging, astrometry, high contrast imaging, and long slit spectroscopy at near-infrared wavelengths. During the initial phase operations, adaptive optics (AO) correction will be provided by its own natural guide star wavefront sensor. In its final configuration, that AO system will be retained and complemented by the laser guide star multi-conjugate adaptive optics module MORFEO (formerly known as MAORY). Among many other things, MICADO will study exoplanets, distant galaxies and stars, and investigate black holes, such as Sagittarius A* at the centre of the Milky Way. After their final design phase, most components of MICADO have moved on to the manufacturing and assembly phase. Here we summarize the final design of the instrument and provide an overview about its current manufacturing status and the timeline. Some lessons learned from the final design review process will be presented in order to help future instrumentation projects to cope with the challenges arising from the substantial differences between projects for 8-10m class telescopes (e.g. ESO-VLT) and the next generation Extremely Large Telescopes (e.g. ESO-ELT). Finally, the expected performance will be discussed in the context of the current landscape of astronomical observatories and instruments. A major obstacle to understanding high-Tc cuprates is that superconductivity precludes observing normal-state properties at low temperatures. One prime example is the normal-state spin susceptibility: although its decrease upon cooling far above Tc typifies pseudogap behavior, its behavior at low temperatures is generally unknown. Here, our measurements in high magnetic fields expose the spin susceptibility of YBa2Cu3Oy down to low temperatures. Even though superconductivity is suppressed by the field, we uncover two thermally-activated contributions alongside a residual susceptibility at T=0 due to gapless excitations. We relate these two distinct gaps to short-range charge-density waves and to the formation of spin singlets similar to those found in certain quantum spin systems. These phenomena thus collectively contribute to the pseudogap in the spin susceptibility at low temperature, supplementing short-lived antiferromagnetism known to initiate pseudogap behavior at high temperatures. We therefore propose that the pseudogap should be regarded as a composite property.

Research shows that the global society as organized today, with our current technological and economic system, is impossible to sustain. We are living in the Anthropocene, an era in which human activities in highly industrialized countries are responsible for overshooting several planetary boundaries, with poorer communities contributing least to the problems but being impacted the most. At the same time, technical and economic gains fail to provide society at large with equal opportunities and improved quality of life. This paper describes approaches taken in computing education to address the issue of sustainability. It presents results of a systematic review of literature on sustainability in computing education. From a set of 572 publications extracted from six large digital libraries plus snowballing, we distilled and analyzed the 90 relevant primary studies. Using an inductive and deductive thematic analysis, we study 1) conceptions of sustainability, computing, and education, 2) implementations of sustainability in computing education, and 3) research on sustainability in computing education. We present a framework capturing learning objectives and outcomes as well as pedagogical methods for sustainability in computing education. These results can be mapped to existing standards and curricula in future work. We find that only a few of the articles engage with the challenges as calling for drastic systemic change, along with radically new understandings of computing and education. We suggest that future research should connect to the substantial body of critical theory such as feminist theory of science and technology. Existing research on sustainability in computing education may be considered as rather immature as the majority of articles are experience reports with limited empirical research., Comment: 49 pages

Spin-orbit entangled pseudospins hold promise for a wide array of exotic magnetism ranging from a Heisenberg antiferromagnet to a Kitaev spin liquid depending on the lattice and bonding geometry, but many of the host materials suffer from lattice distortions and deviate from idealized models in part due to inherent strong pseudospin-lattice coupling. Here, we report on the synthesis of a magnetic superlattice comprising the single ($n$=1) and the double ($n$=2) layer members of the Ruddlesden-Popper series iridates Sr$_{n+1}$Ir$_{n}$O$_{3n+1}$ alternating along the $c$-axis, and provide a comprehensive study of its lattice and magnetic structures using scanning transmission electron microscopy, resonant elastic and inelastic x-ray scattering, third harmonic generation measurements and Raman spectroscopy. The superlattice is free of the structural distortions reported for the parent phases and has a higher point group symmetry, while preserving the magnetic orders and pseudospin dynamics inherited from the parent phases, featuring two magnetic transitions with two symmetry-distinct orders. We infer weaker pseudospin-lattice coupling from the analysis of Raman spectra and attribute it to frustrated magnetic-elastic couplings. Thus, the superlattice expresses a near ideal network of effective spin-one-half moments on a square lattice.

For orthorhombic superconductors we define thermodynamic anisotropy $N \equiv d T_c/d \epsilon_{22} - dT_c/d \epsilon_{11}$ as the difference in how superconducting $T_c$ varies with strains $\epsilon_{ii}$, $i=(1, 2)$, along the in-plane directions. We study the hole doping ($p$) dependence of $N$ on detwinned single crystals of underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ (YBCO) using ultrasound technique. While the structural orthorhombicity of YBCO reduces monotonically with decreasing doping over $0.065

We report a comprehensive Cu L$_3$-edge resonant x-ray scattering study of two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) incommensurate charge correlations in single crystals of the underdoped high-temperature superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.67}$ under uniaxial compression up to 1% along the two inequivalent Cu-O-Cu bond directions (a and b) in the CuO$_2$ planes. The pressure response of the 2D charge correlations is symmetric: pressure along a enhances correlations along b, and vice versa. Our results imply that the underlying order parameter is uniaxial. In contrast, 3D long-range charge order is only observed along b in response to compression along a. Spectroscopic resonant x-ray scattering measurements show that the 3D charge order resides exclusively in the CuO$_2$ planes and may thus be generic to the cuprates. We use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Ir L3 edge to study the effect of hole doping upon the Jeff=1/2 Mott-insulating state in Sr2IrO4, via Rh replacement of the Ir site. The spin-wave gap, associated with XY-type spin-exchange anisotropy, collapses with increasing Rh content, prior to the suppression of the Mott-insulating state and in contrast to electron doping via La substitution of the Sr site. At the same time, despite heavy damping, the d-d excitation spectra retain their overall amplitude and dispersion character. A careful study of the spin-wave spectrum reveals that deviations from the J1-J2-J3 Heisenberg used to model the pristine system disappear at intermediate doping levels. These findings are interpreted in terms of a modulation of Ir-Ir correlations due to the influence of Rh impurities upon nearby Ir wave functions, even as the single-band Jeff=1/2 model remains valid up to full carrier delocalization. The possibility of enhancing desirable functional properties of complex materials by optical driving is motivating a series of studies of their nonlinear terahertz response. In high-Tc cuprates, large amplitude excitation of certain infrared-active lattice vibrations has been shown to induce transient features in the reflectivity suggestive of non-equilibrium superconductivity. Yet, a microscopic mechanism for these observations is still lacking. Here, we report measurements of time- and scattering-angle-dependent second-harmonic generation in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$, taken under the same excitation conditions that result in superconductor-like terahertz reflectivity. We discover a three-order-of-magnitude amplification of a 2.5-terahertz electronic mode, which is unique because of its symmetry, momentum, and temperature dependence. A theory for parametric three-wave amplification of Josephson plasmons, which are assumed to be well-formed below T$_c$ but overdamped throughout the pseudogap phase, explains all these observations and provides a mechanism for non-equilibrium superconductivity. Optical excitation in the cuprates has been shown to induce transient superconducting correlations above the thermodynamic transition temperature, $T_C$, as evidenced by the terahertz frequency optical properties in the non-equilibrium state. In YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ this phenomenon has so far been associated with the nonlinear excitation of certain lattice modes and the creation of new crystal structures. In other compounds, like La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$, similar effects were reported also for excitation at near infrared frequencies, and were interpreted as a signature of the melting of competing orders. However, to date it has not been possible to systematically tune the pump frequency widely in any one compound, to comprehensively compare the frequency dependent photo-susceptibility for this phenomenon. Here, we make use of a newly developed optical parametric amplifier, which generates widely tunable high intensity femtosecond pulses, to excite YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.5}$ throughout the entire optical spectrum (3 - 750 THz). In the far-infrared region (3 - 25 THz), signatures of non-equilibrium superconductivity are induced only for excitation of the 16.4 THz and 19.2 THz vibrational modes that drive $c$-axis apical oxygen atomic positions. For higher driving frequencies (25 - 750 THz), a second resonance is observed around the charge transfer band edge at ~350 THz. These observations highlight the importance of coupling to the electronic structure of the CuO$_2$ planes, either mediated by a phonon or by charge transfer., Comment: 47 pages, 21 figures, 2 tables

We used high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Ni $L_3$ edge to simultaneously investigate high-energy interband transitions characteristic of Ni-O bond ordering and low-energy collective excitations of the Ni spins in the rare-earth nickelates $R$NiO$_3$ ($R$ = Nd, Pr, La) with pseudocubic perovskite structure. With the support of calculations based on a double-cluster model we quantify bond order (BO) amplitudes for different thin films and heterostructures and discriminate short-range BO fluctuations from long-range static order. Moreover we investigate magnetic order and exchange interactions in spatially confined $R$NiO$_3$ slabs by probing dispersive magnon excitations. While our study of superlattices (SLs) grown in the (001) direction of the perovskite structure reveals a robust non-collinear spin spiral magnetic order with dispersive magnon excitations that are essentially unperturbed by BO modulations and spatial confinement, we find magnons with flat dispersions and strongly reduced energies in SLs grown in the $(111)_{\text{pc}}$ direction that exhibit collinear magnetic order. These results give insight into the interplay of different collective ordering phenomena in a prototypical 3$d$ transition metal oxide and establish RIXS as a powerful tool to quantitatively study several order parameters and the corresponding collective excitations within one experiment., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, accepted in Physical Review B

Spin-orbit entangled magnetic dipoles, often referred to as pseudospins, provide a new avenue to explore novel magnetism inconceivable in the weak spin-orbit coupling limit, but the nature of their low-energy interactions remains to be understood. We present a comprehensive study of the static magnetism and low-energy pseudospin dynamics in the archetypal spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr2IrO4. We find that in order to understand even basic magnetization measurements, a formerly overlooked in-plane anisotropy is fundamental. In addition to magnetometry, we use neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering and resonant elastic and inelastic x-ray scattering to identify and quantify the interactions that determine the global symmetry of the system and govern the linear responses of pseudospins to external magnetic felds and their low-energy dynamics. We find that a pseudospin-only Hamiltonian is insufficient for an accurate description of the magnetism in Sr2IrO4 and that pseudospin-lattice coupling is essential. We report temporal changes in Raman-scattering spectra of detwinned YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ single crystals under exposure to red laser light polarized along the crystallographic $a$-axis. A recent publication by Bakr et al. (Phys. Rev. B 88 214517 (2013)) identified new Raman-active modes that appear upon cooling below $T \sim 200$ K, and attributed these modes to charge ordering phenomena observed in x-ray scattering and nuclear magnetic resonance experiments on the same materials. Here we report that the intensities of these modes depend not only on temperature and oxygen content, but also on the cumulative photon dose absorbed by the YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ samples. The light-induced changes in the Raman spectra exhibit a stretched-exponential time dependence, with a characteristic time that increases strongly upon cooling. They also depend strongly on doping and are most pronounced for $x \sim 0.6$. In fully illuminated samples, the mode intensities exhibit a monotonic temperature dependence indicative of a second-order phase transition. The findings indicate a metastable state generated by light-induced rearrangement of the oxygen dopants. We hypothesize that the new Raman phonons are associated with a three-dimensional charge-ordered state induced by light illumination, analogous to a state that was recently observed by resonant x-ray scattering in oxygen-disordered YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ films., Comment: 8 pages and 5 figures. The recently demonstrated x-ray scattering approach using a free electron laser with a high field pulsed magnet has opened new opportunities to explore the charge density wave (CDW) order in cuprate high temperature superconductors. Using this approach, we substantially degrade the superconductivity with magnetic fields up to 33 T to investigate the onset of CDW order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_x$ at low temperatures near a putative quantum critical point (QCP) at $p_1\sim $ 0.08 holes per Cu. We find no CDW can be detected in a sample with a doping concentration less than $p_1$. Our results indicate that the onset of the CDW ground state lies inside the zero-field superconducting dome, and broken translational symmetry is associated with the putative QCP at $p_1$, Comment: 4 figures

We report on the effects of hydrostatic pressure (HP) on the charge density wave observed in underdoped cuprates. We studied YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$ ($T_c$=61 K) using high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS), and reveal an extreme sensitivity of the phonon anomalies related to the charge density wave (CDW) order to HP. The amplitudes of the normal state broadening and superconductivity induced phonon softening at Q$_{CDW}$ rapidly decrease as HP is applied, resulting in the complete suppression of signatures of the CDW below $\sim$1 GPa. Additional IXS measurements on YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.75}$ demonstrate that this very rapid effect cannot be explained by pressure-induced modification of the doping level and highlight the different role of external pressure and doping in tuning the phase diagram of the cuprates. A central issue in the quest to understand the superconductivity in cuprates is the nature and origin of the pseudogap state, which harbours anomalous electronic states such as Fermi arc, charge density wave (CDW), and $d$-wave superconductivity. A fundamentally important, but long-standing controversial problem has been whether the pseudogap state is a distinct thermodynamic phase characterized by broken symmetries below the onset temperature $T^*$. Electronic nematicity, a fourfold ($C_4$) rotational symmetry breaking, has emerged as a key feature inside the pseudogap regime, but the presence or absence of a nematic phase transition and its relationship to the pseudogap remain unresolved. Here we report thermodynamic measurements of magnetic torque in the underdoped regime of orthorhombic YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ with a field rotating in the CuO$_2$ plane, which allow us to quantify magnetic anisotropy with exceptionally high precision. Upon entering the pseudogap regime, the in-plane anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility increases after exhibiting a distinct kink at $T^*$. Our doping dependence analysis reveals that this anisotropy is preserved below $T^*$ even in the limit where the effect of orthorhombicity is eliminated. In addition, the excess in-plane anisotropy data show a remarkable scaling behaviour with respect to $T/T^*$ in a wide doping range. These results provide thermodynamic evidence that the pseudogap onset is associated with a second-order nematic phase transition, which is distinct from the CDW transition that accompanies translational symmetry breaking. This suggests that nematic fluctuations near the pseudogap phase boundary have a potential link to the strange metallic behaviour in the normal state, out of which high-$T_c$ superconductivity emerges., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. In hole-doped cuprates there is now compelling evidence that inside the pseudogap phase, charge order breaks translational symmetry leading to a reconstruction of the Fermi surface. In $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ charge order emerges in two steps: a 2D order found at zero field and at high temperature inside the pseudogap phase, and a 3D order that is superimposed below the superconducting transition $T_c$ when superconductivity is weakened by a magnetic field. Several issues still need to be addressed such as the effect of disorder, the relationship between those charge orders and their respective impact on the Fermi surface. Here, we report high magnetic field sound velocity measurements of the 3D charge order in underdoped $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ in a large doping range. We found that the 3D charge order exists over the same doping range as its 2D counterpart, indicating an intimate connection between the two distinct orders. Condensed-matter analogs of the Higgs boson in particle physics allow insights into its behavior in different symmetries and dimensionalities. Evidence for the Higgs mode has been reported in a number of different settings, including ultracold atomic gases, disordered superconductors, and dimerized quantum magnets. However, decay processes of the Higgs mode (which are eminently important in particle physics) have not yet been studied in condensed matter due to the lack of a suitable material system coupled to a direct experimental probe. A quantitative understanding of these processes is particularly important for low-dimensional systems where the Higgs mode decays rapidly and has remained elusive to most experimental probes. Here, we discover and study the Higgs mode in a two-dimensional antiferromagnet using spin-polarized inelastic neutron scattering. Our spin-wave spectra of Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ directly reveal a well-defined, dispersive Higgs mode, which quickly decays into transverse Goldstone modes at the antiferromagnetic ordering wavevector. Through a complete mapping of the transverse modes in the reciprocal space, we uniquely specify the minimal model Hamiltonian and describe the decay process. Resonant optical excitation of apical oxygen vibrational modes in the normal state of underdoped YBa2Cu3O6+x induces a transient state with optical properties similar to those of the equilibrium superconducting state. Amongst these, a divergent imaginary conductivity and a plasma edge are transiently observed in the photo-stimulated state. Femtosecond hard x-ray diffraction experiments have been used in the past to identify the transient crystal structure in this non-equilibrium state. Here, we start from these crystallographic features and theoretically predict the corresponding electronic rearrangements that accompany these structural deformations. Using density functional theory, we predict enhanced hole-doping of the CuO2 planes. The empty chain Cu dy2-z2 orbital is calculated to strongly reduce in energy, which would increase c-axis transport and potentially enhance the interlayer Josephson coupling as observed in the THz-frequency response. From these calculations, we predict changes in the soft x-ray absorption spectra at the Cu L-edge. Femtosecond x-ray pulses from a free electron laser are used to probe these changes in absorption at two photon energies along this spectrum, and provide data consistent with these predictions., Comment: 20 pages with 6 figures

We attain the previously unaccessed full superconducting dome in a pristine high temperature cuprate superconductor by applying pressures up to 280 kbar to samples of near stoichiometric YBa2Cu3O7. The obtained superconducting phase boundary as a function of hole doping closely follows the superconducting dome in La2-xSrxCuO4. Measurements are now enabled to trace the evolution of various entangled phases and the Fermi surface from the underdoped to overdoped regime in a single high purity cuprate superconducting family of materials.

Optical excitation of apical oxygen vibrations in YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+\delta}$ has been shown to enhance its c-axis superconducting-phase rigidity, as evidenced by a transient blue shift of the equilibrium inter-bilayer Josephson plasma resonance. Surprisingly, a transient c-axis plasma mode could also be induced above T$_{c}$ by the same apical oxygen excitation, suggesting light activated superfluid tunneling throughout the pseudogap phase of YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+\delta}$. However, despite the similarities between the above T$_{c}$ transient plasma mode and the equilibrium Josephson plasmon, alternative explanations involving high mobility quasiparticle transport should be considered. Here, we report an extensive study of the relaxation of the light-induced plasmon into the equilibrium incoherent phase. These new experiments allow for a critical assessment of the nature of this mode. We determine that the transient plasma relaxes through a collapse of its coherence length rather than its carrier (or superfluid) density. These observations are not easily reconciled with quasiparticle interlayer transport, and rather support transient superfluid tunneling as the origin of the light-induced interlayer coupling in YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+\delta}$., Comment: 27 pages (17 pages main text, 10 pages supplementary), 5 figures (main text)

We show that 63Cu NMR spectra place strong constraints on both the nature and the concentration of oxygen defects in ortho-II YBa2Cu3Oy. Systematic deviation from ideal ortho-II order is revealed by the presence of inequivalent Cu sites in either full or empty chains. The results can be explained by two kinds of defects: oxygen clustering into additional chains, or fragments thereof, most likely present at all concentrations (6.4

We have studied the magnetic excitations of electron-doped Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$IrO$_4$ ($0 \leq x \leq 0.10$) using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Ir L$_3$-edge. The long range magnetic order is rapidly lost with increasing $x$, but two-dimensional short-range order (SRO) and dispersive magnon excitations with nearly undiminished spectral weight persist well into the metallic part of the phase diagram. The magnons in the SRO phase are heavily damped and exhibit anisotropic softening. Their dispersions are well described by a pseudospin-1/2 Heisenberg model with exchange interactions whose spatial range increases with doping. We also find a doping-independent high-energy magnetic continuum, which is not described by this model. The spin-orbit excitons arising from the pseudospin-3/2 manifold of the Ir ions broaden substantially in the SRO phase, but remain largely separated from the low-energy magnons. Pseudospin-1/2 models are therefore a good starting point for the theoretical description of the low-energy magnetic dynamics of doped iridates., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Magnetism in transition-metal compounds (TMCs) has traditionally been associated with spin degrees of freedom, because the orbital magnetic moments are typically largely quenched. On the other hand, magnetic order in 4f- and 5d-electron systems arises from spin and orbital moments that are rigidly tied together by the large intra-atomic spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Using inelastic neutron scattering on the archetypal 4d-electron Mott insulator Ca$_2$RuO$_4$, we report a novel form of excitonic magnetism in the intermediate-strength regime of the SOC. The magnetic order is characterized by ``soft'' magnetic moments with large amplitude fluctuations manifested by an intense, low-energy excitonic mode analogous to the Higgs mode in particle physics. This mode heralds a proximate quantum critical point separating the soft magnetic order driven by the superexchange interaction from a quantum-paramagnetic state driven by the SOC. We further show that this quantum critical point can be tuned by lattice distortions, and hence may be accessible in epitaxial thin-film structures. The unconventional spin-orbital-lattice dynamics in Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ identifies the SOC as a novel source of quantum criticality in TMCs.

We report on the growth of stoichiometric Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ single crystals, which allow us to unveil their intrinsic magnetic properties. The effect of different growth conditions has been investigated for crystals grown by the flux method. We find that the magnetic response depends very sensitively on the details of the growth conditions. We assess the defect concentration based on magnetization, X-ray diffraction, Raman scattering, and optical conductivity measurements. We find that samples with a low concentration of electronically active defects show much reduced in-gap spectral weight in the optical conductivity and a pronounced two-magnon peak in the Raman scattering spectrum. A prolonged exposure at high temperature during the growth leads to higher defect concentration likely due to creation of oxygen vacancies. We further demonstrate a systematic intergrowth of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ phases by varying the growth temperature. Our results thus emphasize that revealing the intrinsic magnetic properties of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and related materials requires a scrupulous control of the crystal growth process.

We discuss the mechanism of coherent phonon generation by Stimulated Ionic Raman Scattering, a process different from conventional excitation with near visible optical pulses. Ionic Raman scattering is driven by anharmonic coupling between a directly excited infrared-active phonon mode and other Raman modes. We experimentally study the response of YBa2Cu3O6+x to the resonant excitation of apical oxygen motions at 20 THz by mid-infrared pulses, which has been shown in the past to enhance the interlayer superconducting coupling. We used resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) with and without analysis of the scattered photon polarization, to study dispersive spin excitations in the high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O6+x over a wide range of doping levels (0.1 < x < 1). The excitation profiles were carefully monitored as the incident photon energy was detuned from the resonant condition, and the spin excitation energy was found to be independent of detuning for all x. These findings demonstrate that the largest fraction of the spin-flip RIXS profiles in doped cuprates arises from magnetic collective modes, rather than from incoherent particle-hole excitations as recently suggested theoretically [Benjamin et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 247002(2014)]. Implications for the theoretical description of the electron system in the cuprates are discussed., Comment: Supplementary materials are available upon request

We report the results a comprehensive study of charge density wave (CDW) correlations in untwinned YBCO6+x single crystals with 0.4 0.09) an enhancement of the signal when an external magnetic field up to 6 T is applied in the superconducting state. For samples with p~0.08, where prior work has revealed a field-enhancement of incommensurate magnetic order, the RXS signal is field-independent. This supports a previously suggested scenario in which incommensurate charge and spin orders compete against each other, in addition to individually competing against. We discuss the relationship of these results to stripe order 214, the pseudogap phenomenon, superconducting fluctuations, and quantum oscillations., Comment: revised version. To appear in Phys. Rev. We have used resonant x-ray scattering to determine the momentum dependent charge correlations in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.55}$ samples with highly ordered chain arrays of oxygen acceptors (ortho-II structure). The results reveal nearly critical, biaxial charge density wave (CDW) correlations at in-plane wave vectors (0.315, 0) and (0, 0.325). The corresponding scattering intensity exhibits a strong uniaxial anisotropy. The CDW amplitude and correlation length are enhanced as superconductivity is weakened by an external magnetic field. Analogous experiments were carried out on a YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$ crystal with a dilute concentration of spinless (Zn) impurities, which had earlier been shown to nucleate incommensurate magnetic order. Compared to pristine crystals with the same doping level, the CDW amplitude and correlation length were found to be strongly reduced. These results indicate a three-phase competition between spin-modulated, charge-modulated, and superconducting states in underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+\delta}$., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures revised version, to appear in Phys. We give a general method to construct MDS one-dimensional convolutional codes. Our method generalizes previous constructions of H. Gluesing-Luerssen and B. Langfeld. Moreover we give a classification of one-dimensional Convolutional Goppa Codes and propose a characterization of MDS codes of this type.

We define a new class of Convolutional Codes in terms of fibrations of algebraic varieties generalizaing our previous constructions of Convolutional Goppa Codes. Using this general construction we can give several examples of Maximum Distance Separable (MDS) Convolutional Codes., Comment: 10 pages

This paper is devoted to the study of the uniformization of the moduli space of pairs (X, E) consisting of an algebraic curve and a vector bundle on it. For this goal, we study the moduli space of 5-tuples (X, x, z, E, \phi), consisting of a genus g curve, a point on it, a local coordinate, a rank n degree d vector bundle and a formal trivialization of the bundle at the point. A group acting on it is found and it is shown that it acts (infinitesimally) transitively on this moduli space and an identity between central extensions of its Lie algebra is proved. Furthermore, a geometric explanation for that identity is offered.

In this paper the moduli space of Higgs pairs over a fixed smooth projective curve with extra formal data is defined and it is endowed with a scheme structure. We introduce a relative version of the Krichever map using a fibration of Sato Grassmannians and show that this map is injective. This fact and the characterization of the points of the image of the Krichever map allow us to prove that this moduli space is a closed subscheme of the product of the moduli of vector bundles (with formal extra data) and a formal anologue of the Hitchin base. This characterization also provide us the method to compute explicitely KP-type equations which describe the moduli space of Higgs pairs. Finally, for the case where the spectral cover is totally ramified at a fixed point of the curve, these equations are given in terms of the characteristic coefficients of the Higgs field.

First, some results of Shiota and Plaza-Martin on Prym varieties of curves with an involution are generalized to the general case of an arbitrary automorphism of prime order. We consider a relative Fourier-Mukai transform defined on elliptic fibrations over an arbitrary normal base scheme. This is used to construct relative Atiyah sheaves and generalize Atiyah's and Tu's results about semistable sheaves over elliptic curves to the case of elliptic fibrations. This paper is concerned with the formulation of a non-pertubative theory of the bosonic string. We introduce a formal group $G$ which we propose as the ``universal moduli space'' for such a formulation. This is motivated because $G$ establishes a natural link between representations of the Virasoro algebra and the moduli space of curves.
