In the presence of 1 mol % of a chiral iron porphyrin catalyst, various 3‐arylmethyl‐substituted 2‐quinolones and 2‐pyridones underwent an enantioselective amination reaction (20 examples; 93–99 % ee). The substrates were used as the limiting reagents, and fluorinated aryl azides (1.5 equivalents) served as nitrene precursors. The reaction is triggered by visible light which allows a facile dediazotation at ambient temperature. The selectivity of the reaction is governed by a two‐point hydrogen bond interaction between the ligand of the iron catalyst and the substrate. Hydrogen bonding directs the amination to a specific hydrogen atom within the substrate that is displaced by the nitrogen substituent either in a concerted fashion or by a rebound mechanism. Driven by escalating environmental concerns, synthetic chemistry faces an urgent need for a green revolution. Green chemistry, with its focus on low environmental impacting chemicals and minimized waste production, emerges as a powerful tool in addressing this challenge. Metrics such as the E‐factor guide the design of environmentally friendly strategies for chemical processes by quantifying the waste generated in obtaining target products, thus enabling interventions to minimize it. Phthalocyanines (Pcs), versatile molecules with exceptional physical and chemical properties, hold immense potential for technological applications. This review aims to bridge the gap between green chemistry and phthalocyanine synthesis by collecting the main examples of environmentally sustainable syntheses documented in the literature. The calculation of the E‐factor of a selection of them provides insights on how crucial it is to evaluate a synthetic process in its entirety. Porphyrin atropisomerism, which arises from restricted σ‐bond rotation between the macrocycle and a sufficiently bulky substituent, was identified in 1969 by Gottwald and Ullman in 5,10,15,20‐tetrakis(o‐hydroxyphenyl)porphyrins. Henceforth, an entirely new field has emerged utilizing this transformative tool. This review strives to explain the consequences of atropisomerism in porphyrins, the methods which have been developed for their separation and analysis and present the diverse array of applications. Porphyrins alone possess intriguing properties and a structure which can be easily decorated and molded for a specific function. Therefore, atropisomerism serves as a transformative tool, making it possible to obtain even a specific molecular shape. By using photoelectron and absorption spectroscopies together with density functional theory calculations, it is systematically evolving how the functional properties of the Ni centers are changed within a polymerized molecular structure in comparison to single‐molecule nickel tetraphenylporphyrin derivatives that build the 2D molecular network. A model that explains the differences in the electronic and magnetic properties observed for the Ni centers in both structures based on the additional rigidity characteristic of the molecular layer after polymerization is drawn. Noncovalent cofacial porphyrin dimers have attracted interest due to their potential use as host materials or catalysts. In this study, we introduce a novel coordination‐directed cofacial porphyrin dimer from a meso‐tetraphenylporphyrin derivative modified with 2,2′‐bipyridine moieties at the meta positions of the phenyl groups. Spectroscopic investigation has shed light on the binding processes and the structure of the dimer in solution in detail. Initial Zn2+ ion binding to the porphyrin hinders the subsequent Zn2+ binding and the binding of the second porphyrin. However, once the dimer is formed, additional Zn2+ binding is notably enhanced, resulting in a pronounced S‐shaped binding curve. The detailed structure of the dimer in solution was established based on UV‐vis spectroscopy, various 1H NMR spectroscopy techniques and mass spectrometry. Simulations of ring‐current‐induced chemical shift changes provided evidence for the face‐to‐face porphyrin structure with tetrahedral coordination of the bipyridine ligands. The X‐ray single crystal structure provided conclusive evidence for the structure of the face‐to‐face dimer, which remarkably resembles the model structure from the 1H NMR simulation. The stability of the dimer structure makes it promising for further exploration of this motif in developing new supramolecular structures and for their potential applications as host compounds and catalysts. Symmetry and shape are essential aspects of molecular structure and how we interpret molecules and their properties. We, as chemists, are comfortable with pictorial representations of structure, in which some nuance is lost—investigating molecular shape numerically by looking at how closely it fits a reference, such as a plane, or a set of vectors or coordinates, is informative, though far from engaging. Often relationships between chemical structure and derived values are obscured. Taking our inspiration from Piet Mondrian's Compositions, we have depicted the symmetry information encoded within 3D data as blocks of color, to show clearly how chemical arguments and resultant molecular distortion may contribute to symmetry. Great art gives us a new perspective on the world; as a pastiche, this art may allow us to look at familiar molecules, such as porphyrins, in a new light, understanding how their shape and properties are intertwined. Photoacoustic (PA) imaging is a novel biological imaging technique with superior depth resolution compared to fluorescence imaging. The efficacy of PA imaging depends on contrast agents that possess considerable absorbance at longer wavelengths, coupled with high permeability in biological tissue and minimal fluorescence, achieved through mitigating aggregation‐caused quenching (ACQ) that attenuates PA intensity. Despite the successful transfer of porphyrin 2 featuring amino moieties from polysaccharides to liposomes, most of 2 incorporated within λ‐carrageenan (CGN‐2 complex) remained in CGN under acidic lysosomal conditions (pH 5.0). Consequently, the CGN‐2 complex exhibited a strong PA signal under 680 nm photoirradiation in Colon26 cells owing to the ACQ of 2. Moreover, the PA intensity of the CGN‐2 complex was further enhanced under 780 nm photoirradiation owing to the increased absorbance at 780 nm facilitated by the redshift of the Q‐band at pH 5.0. Norcorrole Ni(II) complexes have recently received considerable attention because they are readily accessible antiaromatic molecules. Their high stability under ambient conditions and ease of synthesis have enabled the exploration of the intrinsic properties of antiaromatic molecules. Here, we report the synthesis and properties of meso–meso singly linked porphyrin‐norcorrole hybrids and a triply linked porphyrin‐norcorrole hybrid. The singly linked and triply linked porphyrin‐norcorrole hybrids were fully characterized, including an X‐ray structural analysis. Due to their orthogonal conformation, the singly linked hybrids maintain the individual electronic properties of their porphyrin and norcorrole subunits, while the triply linked hybrid shows a significantly smaller electrochemical HOMO–LUMO gap (0.45 eV) than that of Ni(II) dimesitylnorcorrole (1.08 eV). Strained macrocycles display interesting properties, such as conformational rigidity, often resulting in enhanced π‐conjugation or enhanced affinity for non‐covalent guest binding, yet they can be difficult to synthesize. Here we use computational modeling to design a template to direct the formation of an 18‐porphyrin nanoring with direct meso‐meso bonds between the porphyrin units. Coupling of a linear 18‐porphyrin oligomer in the presence of this template gives the target nanoring, together with an unexpected 36‐porphyrin ring by‐product. On-surface chemistry holds the potential for ultimate miniaturization of functional devices. Porphyrins are promising building-blocks in exploring advanced nanoarchitecture concepts. More stable molecular materials of practical interest with improved charge transfer properties can be achieved by covalently interconnecting molecular units. On-surface synthesis allows to construct extended covalent nanostructures at interfaces not conventionally available. Here, we address the synthesis and properties of covalent molecular network composed of interconnected constituents derived from halogenated nickel tetraphenylporphyrin on Au(111). We report that the π-extended two-dimensional material exhibits dispersive electronic features. Concomitantly, the functional Ni cores retain the same single-active site character of their single-molecule counterparts. This opens new pathways when exploiting the high robustness of transition metal cores provided by bottom-up constructed covalent nanomeshes.

In the continuation of previous studies on carbon‐rich meso‐tetraarylporphyrins featuring 2,7‐fluorene units at their periphery, the effect of changing the peripheral dendritic arms for linear arms on their oxygen‐photosensitizing ability, their fluorescence and their two‐photon absorption (2PA) properties is now analyzed. Thus, starburst porphyrins possessing up to twenty conjugated fluorenyl units were isolated and studied. More precisely, a series of five new free‐base porphyrins featuring fully conjugated arms incorporating an increasing number of fluorenyl groups connected via 1,2‐alkenyl spacers were synthesized, along with their Zn(II) complexes. Upon excitation in the arm‐centred π‐π* absorption band, an efficient energy transfer takes place from the peripheral fluorenyl units to the central porphyrin core, leading to intense red‐light emission and oxygen photosensitization by the latter. More interestingly, while the linear optical properties of these porphyrins were only slightly improved compared to those of their dendrimer analogues for photodynamic therapy (PDT) or fluorescence imaging, their 2PA cross‐sections were much more significantly boosted, evidencing the key role played by different structures on nonlinear optical properties. Finally, by comparison with other porphyrin‐based two‐photon photosensitizers reported in the literature, we show that these new "semi‐disconnected" starburst systems exhibit a remarkable trade‐off between intrinsic 2PA, fluorescence and oxygen photosensitization. Pyrrole‐sharing fused hybrids of NiII porphyrin with PdII N‐confused(NC)‐corrole and PdII NC‐oxaporphyrin were synthesized by post‐fabrication of NiII porphyrins. Specifically this consists of Friedel–Crafts type aromatic substitution reaction of meso‐free NiII porphyrin with α,α′‐dibromotripyrrin and Pd(OAc)2 assisted cyclization, and final heating to induce a Pd−C bond formation. NiII porphyrins fused with PdII NC‐corrole and with PdII NC‐oxaporphyrins show coplanar structures with a shared pyrrole unit. In these hybrids, the PdII NC‐oxaporphyrin is aromatic and the PdII NC‐corrole is moderately antiaromatic and these local electronic properties interact to influence the whole network. Polypeptides, as natural polyelectrolytes, are assembled into tailored proteins to integrate chromophores and catalytic sites for photosynthesis. Mimicking nature to create the water‐soluble nanoassemblies from synthetic polyelectrolytes and photocatalytic molecular species for artificial photosynthesis is still rare. Here, we report the enhancement of the full‐spectrum solar‐light‐driven H2 production within a supramolecular system built by the co‐assembly of anionic metalloporphyrins with cationic polyelectrolytes in water. This supramolecular photocatalytic system achieves a H2 production rate of 793 and 685 μmol h−1 g−1 over 24 h with a combination of Mg or Zn porphyrin as photosensitizers and Cu porphyrin as a catalyst, which is more than 23 times higher than that of free molecular controls. With a photosensitizer to catalyst ratio of 10000 : 1, the highest H2 production rate of >51,700 μmol h−1 g−1 with a turnover number (TON) of >1,290 per molecular catalyst was achieved over 24 h irradiation. The hierarchical self‐assembly not only enhances photostability through forming ordered stackings of the metalloporphyrins but also facilitates both energy and electron transfer from antenna molecules to catalysts, and therefore promotes the photocatalysis. We report on the synthesis and characterization of a family of three water‐soluble bola‐amphiphilic zinc‐porphyrin‐perylenebisimide triads containing oligo carboxylic‐acid capped Newkome dendrons in the periphery. Variations of the perylenebisimide (PBI) core geometry and dendron size (G1 and G2 dendrons with 3‐ and 9‐carboxylic acid groups respectively) allow for tuning the supramolecular aggregation behavior with respect to variation of the molecular architecture. The triads show good solubility in basic aqueous media and aggregation to supramolecular assemblies. Theoretical investigations at the DFT level of theory accompanied by electrochemical measurements unravel the geometric and electronic structure of the amphiphiles. The syntheses of a series of copper(II) porphyrins and their dimers linked by palladium(II) or platinum(II) are reported. Their electronic properties and their magnetic properties were studied. In particular, the effect of the linking unit on these properties was evaluated. It was discovered that three factors influence the electronic and magnetic interactions between the two metalloporphyrins: the nature of the linking metal ion, the nature of the external coordination site of the porphyrin, and also the nature of the metal ion present in the central core of the aromatic macrocycle. The use of 2,5‐diformylpyrrole in self‐assembly reactions with diamines and Zn(II)/Cd(II) salts allowed the preparation of [2]catenane, trefoil knot, and Borromean rings. The intrinsically dynamic nature of the diiminopyrrole motif rendered all of the formed assemblies intramolecularly flexible. The presence of diiminopyrrole revealed new coordination motifs and influenced the host–guest chemistry of the systems, as illustrated by hexafluorophosphate encapsulation by Borromean rings. A family of transition metal complexes of meso‐aryl‐2‐aza‐21‐carbaporphyrin (N‐confused porphyrin, NCP) derivatives acting as ortho‐metallating ligands for ruthenium(II), rhodium(III), and iridium(III) is synthesized and characterized by XRD, spectroscopic, and electrochemical methods. The chirality of these systems is shown by the separation of the enantiomers and analyzed by circular dichroism and DFT. Porphyrins and crown ether hybrids have emerged as a promising class of molecules composed of elements of a tetrapyrrole macrocycle and an oligo(ethylene glycol) segment. These hybrid systems constitute a broad group of compounds, including crowned porphyrins, crownphyrins, and calixpyrrole-crown ether systems forming Pacman complexes with transition metals. Their unique nature accustoms them as excellent ligands and hosts capable of binding guest molecules/ions, but also to undergo unusual transformations, such as metal-induced expansion/contraction. Depending on the design of the particular hybrid, they present unique features involving intriguing redox chemistry, interesting optical properties, and reactivity towards transition metals. In this perspective article, the overview of both the early designs of porphyrin-crown ether hybrids, as well as the most recent advances in the synthesis and characterisation of this remarkable group of macrocyclic systems, are addressed. The discussion covers the strategies employed in synthesising these systems, including cyclisation reactions, self-assembly, and their remarkable reactivity. The potential applications of porphyrin-crown ether hybrids are also highlighted. Moreover, the discussion identifies the challenges associated with synthesising and characterising hybrids, outlining the possible future directions.

Porphyrins are attracting increasing attention in materials science and photochemistry owing to their unique properties and diverse applications. This study focuses on modifying and tuning the absorption properties of porphyrins, specifically those of quinoidal porphyrins, to extend their spectral range into the near‐infrared (NIR) region. We report the synthesis and structural and physical properties of quinone compounds derived from doubly and triply linked diporphyrins and their metal complexes. Doubly linked diporphyrinquinone exhibits broad panchromatic absorption properties in solution owing to its low symmetry. Metal complexation markedly extends its absorption range into the near‐infrared region. In contrast, the metal complexes of the triply linked diporphyrinquinones exhibit sharp and strong absorption bands in the visible to near‐infrared region owing to their higher symmetry. The longest absorption wavelength of the triply linked diporphyrinquinones was approximately 1500 nm, which was significantly more red‐shifted than that of the doubly linked ones. Alkylation of one of the inner‐core nitrogen atoms is one possible approach to obtain dianionic corrole ligands, suitable for the coordination of divalent metal ions, such as PdII. Inner‐core N‐methylation can be obtained by treating the corrole with CH3I, but the reaction conditions should be optimized to limit the formation of the dimethylated derivative. Two regioisomers, the N‐21 and the N‐22 methyl derivatives are obtained from the reaction, with the first product achieved in a higher amount. Structural characterization of the reaction products evidenced the distortion induced by the introduction of the methyl groups; the N‐methylcorroles are chiral compounds, and the enantiomers were separated by chromatography, with their absolute configuration assigned by ECD computation. Palladium insertion was achieved in the case of monosubstituted corroles, but not with the dimethylated macrocycle; X‐ray characterization of the complexes showed the distortion of the macrocycles. The Pd complexes do not show luminescence emission, but are able to produce singlet oxygen upon irradiation. The PdII complexes were also inserted in human serum albumin (HSA) and dispersed in water; in this case, the protein protects the corroles from photobleaching, and a switch from the type II to the type I mechanism in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production is observed. A new class of redox‐active dihydroindolo(2,3a)carbazole(InC)‐based porphyrin‐like macrocycles (thiophene embedded: InCT and p–phenylene embedded: InCB) and the corresponding [b]‐annulated BODIPY complexes (InCTBF2 and InCBBF2) are reported. A facile synthetic methodology is adopted to accomplish the new expanded‐porphyrin‐like macrocyclic systems using the key precursor 11 based on 11,12‐dihydroindolo(2,3a)carbazole building block 4. In these macrocyclic systems, the subunit 4 is deemed to be a donor and an azafulvene‐extended with π‐conjugated fragment (thiophene or p‐phenylene) acts as an acceptor. Single crystal X‐ray structures are obtained for both InCT and InCB. Spectroelectrochemical studies on these macrocycles and their BF2 complexes display intriguing near‐IR electrochromic properties with reversible multi‐color switching upon cathodic scans at room temperature. InCTBF2 shows high stability with a radical comproportionation constant (Kc) of 1.22 × 106. Thiophene and p‐phenylene subunits in InCT and InCB exhibit ring rotation at room temperature as evident from NMR studies. The fundamental properties of azaporphyrins can be modulated over a wide range by changing the number of meso‐nitrogen atoms. Reported herein are the first examples of 5,10,15,20‐tetraaryl‐5‐azaporphyrinium (MTAMAP) salts, which were prepared via metal‐templated cyclization of the corresponding zinc(II) and copper(II) complexes of 10‐aryl‐1‐chloro‐19‐benzoyl‐5,15‐dimesityl‐10‐azabiladiene‐ac. The inclusion of one meso‐nitrogen atom in the 5,10,15,20‐tetraarylporphyrin skeleton considerably changes the redox and optical properties as well as the degree of aromaticity of the porphyrin ring. The present findings suggest that MTAMAP salts would be promising scaffolds for the development of new azaporphyrin‐based ionic fluorophores and photosensitizers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In photosynthetic light‐harvesting complexes, strong interaction between chromophores enables efficient absorption of solar radiation and has been suggested to enable ultrafast energy funneling to the reaction center. To examine whether similar effects can be realized in synthetic systems, and to determine the mechanisms of energy transfer, we synthesized and characterized a series of bioinspired arrays containing strongly‐coupled BODIPY dimers as energy donors and chlorin derivatives as energy acceptors. The BODIPY dimers feature broad absorption in the range of 500–600 nm, complementing the chlorin absorption to provide absorption across the entire visible spectrum. Ultrafast (~10 ps) energy transfer was observed from photoexcited BODIPY dyads to chlorin subunits. Surprisingly, the energy‐transfer rate is nearly independent of the position where the BODIPY dimer is attached to the chlorin and of the type of connecting linker. In addition, the energy‐transfer rate from BODIPY dimers to chlorin is slower than the corresponding rate in arrays containing BODIPY monomers. The lower rate, corresponding to less efficient through‐bond transfer, is most likely due to weaker electronic coupling between the ground state of the chlorin acceptor and the delocalized electronic state of the BODIPY dimer, compared to the localized state of a BODIPY monomer. Open‐shell radicals are promising near‐infrared (NIR) photothermal agents (PTAs) owing to their easily accessible narrow band gaps, but their stabilization and functionalization remain challenging. Herein, highly stable π‐extended nickel corrole radicals with [4n+1] π systems are synthesized and used to prepare NIR‐absorbing PTAs for efficient phototheranostics. The light‐harvesting ability of corrole radicals gradually improves as the number of fused benzene rings on β‐pyrrolic locations increases radially, with naphthalene‐ and anthracene‐fused radicals and their one‐electron oxidized [4n] π cations exhibiting panchromatic visible‐to‐NIR absorption. The extremely low doublet excited states of corrole radicals promote heat generation via nonradiative decay. By encapsulating naphthocorrole radicals with amphiphilic polymer, water‐soluble nanoparticles Na‐NPs are produced, which exhibit outstanding photostability and high photothermal conversion efficiency of 71.8 %. In vivo anti‐tumor therapy results indicate that Na‐NPs enable photoacoustic imaging of tumors and act as biocompatible PTAs for tumor ablation when triggered by 808 nm laser light. A preliminary catalytic study indicates the activity of the iridium(III) ortho‐metallated complexes in the N‐heterocyclization of primary amines with diols.

Conjugate addition of ethanol and subsequent oxidation with [bis (trifluoroacetoxy)iodo]benzene (PIFA) allowed for the inner ethoxylation of 3‐oxo‐N‐confused tetraphenylporphyrin (ONCP). 5,15‐Dioxaporphyrin (DOP) is a novel meso‐oxaporphyrin analogue and exhibits unique 20π‐antiaromaticity, unlike its mother congener of 18π‐aromatic 5‐oxaporphyrin, commonly known as its cationic iron complex called verdohem, which is a key intermediate of heme catabolism. To reveal its reactivities and properties as an oxaporphyrin analogue, the oxidation of tetra‐β‐arylated DOP (DOP‐Ar4) was explored in this study. Stepwise oxidation from the 20π‐electron neutral state was achieved, and the corresponding 19π‐electron radical cation and 18π‐electron dication were characterized. Further oxidation of the 18π‐aromatic dication resulted in the formation of a ring‐opened dipyrrindione product by hydrolysis. Considering a similar reaction of verdoheme to ring‐opened biliverdin in the heme degradation in nature, the current result consolidates the ring‐opening reactivity of oxaporphyrinium cation species. Tetrakis(4‐aminophenyl)porphyrin (1) and tetrakis(4‐acetamidophenyl)porphyrin (2) were dissolved in water with the incorporation of a polysaccharide (λ‐carrageenan (CGN)) as a water‐solubilizing agent. Although the photodynamic activity of the CGN‐2 complex was considerably lower than that of the CGN‐1 complex, the selectivity index (SI; IC50 in a normal cell/IC50 in a cancer cell) of the CGN‐2 complex was considerably higher than that of the CGN‐1 complex. This is because the photodynamic activity of the CGN‐2 complex was significantly affected by the intracellular uptakes by the normal and cancer cells. During in vivo experiments, the CGN‐2 complex inhibited tumor growth under light irradiation with high blood retention compared with the CGN‐1 complex and Photofrin, which exhibited lower blood retention. Antimony corrole cations have been prepared by one‐electron oxidation of antimony(III) congeners with silver(I) and copper(II) salts. Isolation and crystallization was successful for the first time, and the X‐ray crystallographic investigation unraveled structural similarities with antimony(III)corroles. EPR experiments showed strong hyperfine interactions of the unpaired electron with the 121Sb (I=5/2) and 123Sb nuclei (I=7/2). A DFT analysis supports the description of the oxidized form as a SbIII corrole radical with less than 2 % SbIV character. In the presence of water or a fluoride source like PF6−, the compounds undergo a redox disproportionation to yield known antimony(III)corroles and either difluorido‐antimony(V)corroles, or bis‐μ‐oxido‐di[antimony(V)corroles] via novel cationic hydroxo‐antimony(V) derivatives. π‐Conjugated nanoribbons attract interest because of their unusual electronic structures and charge‐transport behavior. Here, we report the synthesis of a series of fully edge‐fused porphyrin‐anthracene oligomeric ribbons (dimer and trimer), together with a computational study of the corresponding infinite polymer. The porphyrin dimer and trimer were synthesized in high yield, via oxidative cyclodehydrogenation of singly linked precursors, using 2,3‐dichloro‐5,6‐dicyano‐1,4‐benzoquinone (DDQ) and trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TfOH). The crystal structure of the dimer shows that the central π‐system is flat, with a slight S‐shaped wave distortion at each porphyrin terminal. The extended π‐conjugation causes a dramatic red‐shift in the absorption spectra: the absorption maxima of the fused dimer and trimer appear at 1188 nm and 1642 nm, respectively (for the nickel complexes dissolved in toluene). The coordinated metal in the dimer was changed from Ni to Mg, using p‐tolylmagnesium bromide, providing access to free‐base and Zn complexes. Herein, we report the synthesis of anthracene‐containing twisted cyclo[2]dipyrrin 1 by utilizing a non‐planar building block, 1,5‐dipyrrylanthracene (1,5‐DPA). The non‐planar nature of the macrocycle enhanced the solubility and helped in structural characterization. Macrocycle 1 adopts a twisted 'figure of eight' conformation stabilized by strong intramolecular H‐bonding interactions and exists as a pair of helical enantiomers, as revealed by X‐ray crystallographic analysis. More importantly, the sterically locked structure enabled facile optical resolution using chiral HPLC. The (P,P) and (M,M) enantiomers show moderate chiroptical properties, such as absorption dissymmetry factors |gabs| in the order of 10−3, and luminescence dissymmetry factors |glum| of 3.8×10−3 and 2.9×10−3 at 702 nm, respectively. Porphyrazines ( P z ) are porphyrinoids, which are macro-cyclic compounds made up of four in-dole rings. P z has various potential and practical uses in health and technology due to their distinctive optical and electrochemical characteristics. Topological descriptors are numerical values given to molecular structures that may be used to predict specific physical characteristics. In this work, we have investigated topological features of the porphyrazine and tetrakis porphyrazine structure based on degree. We have calculated the closed forms of the Zagreb, Randic, geometric-arithmetic, harmonic, augmented and atom-bond connectivity (ABC) indices of the porphyrazine and tetrakis porphyrazine structures. The syntheses of a series of copper(II) porphyrins and their dimers linked by palladium(II) or platinum(II) are reported. Their electronic properties and their magnetic properties were studied. In particular, the effect of the linking unit on these properties was evaluated. It was discovered that three factors influence the electronic and magnetic interactions between the two metalloporphyrins: the nature of the linking metal ion, the nature of the external coordination site of the porphyrin, and also the nature of the metal ion present in the central core of the aromatic macrocycle.

We report a two‐step approach to obtain synthetically versatile bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane (BCP) derivatives using Grignard reagents. This method allows the incorporation of BCP units in tetrapyrrolic macrocycles and the synthesis of a new class of calix[4]pyrrole analogues by replacing two bridging methylene groups with two BCP units. In addition, a doubly N‐confused system was also formed in the presence of electron‐withdrawing substituents at the BCP bridgeheads. The pyrrole rings in BCP containing macrocycles exist in 1,3‐alternate or αβαβ conformations, as observed from single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction analyses and 2D NMR spectroscopy. In view of developing artificial light‐responsive complex systems, the preparation of discrete and robust heteroleptic assemblies of different chromophores in precisely defined positions is of great value since they would allow to investigate directional processes unavailable in symmetrical architectures. Here we describe the preparation, through a modular stepwise approach, and characterization of four novel and robust metal‐mediated heteroleptic 4+3 porphyrin tapes, labeled D4−T4−D4, D3−T4−D3, D4−T3−D4, and D3−T3−D3, where a central meso‐tetrapyridylporphyrin (either 3′‐TPyP=T3 or 4′‐TPyP=T4) is connected to two equal cis‐dipyridylporphyrins (either 3′cisDPyMP=D3 or 4′cisDPyMP=D4) through four {t,c,c‐RuCl2(CO)2} fragments. Whereas D4−T4−D4 is flat, the tapes containing at least one 3′PyP, i. e. D3−T4−D3, D4−T3−D4, and D3−T3−D3, have unprecedented – and well defined – 3D geometries, and each exists in solution as a pair of stereoisomers in slow conformational equilibrium. The X‐ray molecular structures of two such conformers, the C‐shaped (D3−T4−D3)C and the z‐shaped (D4−T3−D4)z, were determined and are fully consistent with the solution NMR findings. A series of nickel(II) porphyrins bearing one or two bulky nitrogen donors at the meso positions were prepared by using Ullmann methodology or more classical Buchwald–Hartwig amination reactions to create the new C-N bonds. For several new compounds, single crystals were obtained, and the X-ray structures were solved. The electrochemical data of these compounds are reported. For a few representative examples, spectroelectrochemical measurements were used to clarify the electron exchange process. In addition, a detailed electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) study was performed to estimate the extent of delocalization of the generated radical cations. In particular, electron nuclear double resonance spectroscopy (ENDOR) was used to determine the coupling constants. DFT calculations were conducted to corroborate the EPR spectroscopic data. Synthesis, characterization and reactivity studies of a hetero‐dicopper complex, particularly towards oxygen reduction are presented. A bischlorido copper(II) trishistidine‐type coordination unit is positioned directly above a copper porphyrin unit. The close distance between the two coordination fragments is secured by a rigid xanthene backbone. Surprisingly, the dinuclear complex is not active towards oxygen reduction unlike the earlier published mononuclear analogues with a bispyridylamine copper center. The electronic properties of a hexaphyrin was fine‐tuned via core‐modification leading to the formation of a Hückel aromatic 30π hexaphyrin which incorporates two pyrrole and four furan rings in the π‐conjugated pathway. This Hückel aromatic hexaphyrin modified its conformation upon two‐electron ring oxidation either with triflic acid or Meerwein salt [Et3O]+[SbCl6]− to yield 28π Möbius aromatic dication species. Perovskite Solar Cells (PSCs) have attracted attention due to their low cost, easy solution processability, high efficiency, and scalability. However, the benchmark expensive hole transport material (HTM) 2,2′,7,7′-tetrakis[N, N-di(4-methoxyphenyl)amino]-9,9′-spirobifluorene (Spiro-MeOTAD), which is traditionally solution-processed with toxic solvents such as chlorobenzene (CB), dichlorobenzene (DCB), or toluene, is a bottleneck. To address this issue, this work investigates the implementation of Zn(II), Cu(II), or Co(II) tetra-tert-butylphthalocyanines (TBU4-Cu, TBU4-Zn, TBU4-Co), established macrocyclic derivatives whose synthesis and processing inside the devices have been redesigned to be more environmentally sustainable and cost-effective by substituting conventional solvents with greener alternatives such as anisole, propane-1,2-diol, and their mixture, as dopant-free HTMs in planar n-i-p PSCs. The anisole-processed HTMs provided power conversion efficiencies (PCE) up to 12.27% for TBU4-Cu and 11.73% for TBU4-Zn, with better photovoltaic parameters than the corresponding cells made with chlorobenzene for which the best results obtained were, respectively, 12.22% and 10.81%. Porphyrin dimers have been widely explored and studied owing to their importance in photosynthetic systems. A vast variety of dimers linked by different groups and at different angles have been synthesized and studied; however, the means by which to synthesize rigidly fused porphyrins with direct conjugation of the chromophores remains limited. Such a class of porphyrins may possess interesting properties that unconjugated or stacked dimers may not exhibit. In this study, bisbenzimidazole‐fused porphyrin dimers and their mono‐ and bis−zinc derivatives are synthesized and characterized. As a consequence of excitonic coupling, these dimers exhibit a split Soret band irrespective of the metal ion in the porphyrin cavity. Steady‐state fluorescence and excitation spectra followed by femtosecond transient absorption spectral studies of the heterometallated dimer, (free‐base and zinc porphyrin) reveals the occurrence of efficient singlet‐singlet energy transfer (>95 % efficiency and rate constant >1012 s−1) within the dyad. Further, donor‐acceptor conjugates were formed by metal‐ligand axial coordination of phenyl imidazole functionalized C60 and were characterized by a variety of physicochemical techniques. Excited state charge separation from both singlet and triplet excited states of ZnP in the conjugates has been established. The lifetime of the final charge‐separated state was in the 30–40 μs range revealing charge stabilization. Interestingly, no charge separation in the conjugate derived from the heterometallated dimer was observed wherein excitation transfer dominated the process. The present study brings out the importance of the rigid π‐spacer connecting porphyrin dimers in governing the energy and electron transfer events when coupled with an electron acceptor. Covalent functionalization of tungsten disulfide (WS2) with photo‐ and electro‐active nickel‐porphyrin (NiP) is reported. Exfoliated WS2 interfacing NiP moieties with 1,2‐dithiolane linkages is assayed in the oxygen evolution reaction under both dark and illuminated conditions. The hybrid material presented, WS2−NiP, is fully characterized with complementary spectroscopic, microscopic, and thermal techniques. Standard yet advanced electrochemical techniques, such as linear sweep voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and calculation of the electrochemically active surface area, are used to delineate the catalytic profile of WS2−NiP. In‐depth study of thin films with transient photocurrent and photovoltage response assays uncovers photo‐enhanced electrocatalytic behavior. The observed photo‐enhanced electrocatalytic activity of WS2−NiP is attributed to the presence of Ni centers coordinated and stabilized by the N4 motifs of tetrapyrrole rings at the tethered porphyrin derivative chains, which work as photoreceptors. The molecular structure, electrochemistry, spectroelectrochemistry and electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) features of two CoII porphyrin(2.1.2.1) complexes bearing Ph or F5Ph groups at the two meso‐positions of the macrocycle are examined. Single crystal X‐ray analysis reveal a highly bent, nonplanar macrocyclic conformation of the complex resulting in clamp‐shaped molecular structures. Cyclic voltammetry paired with UV/Vis spectroelectrochemistry in PhCN/0.1 M TBAP suggest that the first electron addition corresponds to a macrocyclic‐centered reduction while spectral changes observed during the first oxidation are consistent with a metal‐centered CoII/CoIII process. The activity of the clamp‐shaped complexes towards heterogeneous ORR in 0.1 M KOH show selectivity towards the 4e− ORR pathway giving H2O. DFT first‐principle calculations on the porphyrin catalyst indicates a lower overpotential for 4e− ORR as compared to the 2e− pathway, consistent with experimental data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Catenanes with multistate switchable properties are promising components for next‐generation molecular machines and supramolecular materials. Herein, we report a ligand‐controlled switching method, a novel method for the multistate switching of catenanes controlled by complexation with added amine ligands. To verify this method, a [3]catenane comprising cyclic porphyrin dimers with a rigid π‐system has been synthesized. Owing to the rigidity, the relative positions among the cyclic components of the [3]catenane can be precisely controlled by complexation with various amine ligands. Moreover, ligand‐controlled multistate switching affects the optical properties of the [3]catenanes: the emission intensity can be tuned by modulating the sizes and coordination numbers of integrated amine ligands. This work shows the utility of using organic ligands for the structural switching of catenanes, and will contribute to the further development of multistate switchable mechanically interlocked molecules. NiII 3,7,13,17‐tetrapyridyl‐5,15‐diazaporphyrin serves as a double tridentate ligand to PdII ions to provide a pincer‐type bispalladium complex. Electrochemical analysis revealed that the bispalladium complex shows excellent ability to accept electrons and reversible redox properties due to the coordination of the two cationic PdII centers to the meso‐nitrogen atoms. We isolated and characterized one‐ and two‐electron reduction species of the bispalladium complex. The 20π antiaromatic nature of the two‐electron reduction species was confirmed by 1H NMR spectroscopy, UV/Vis‐near‐IR (NIR) absorption spectra, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Context and results: Aromaticity is a fundamental chemical concept that has been widely used in explaining the reactivity, stability, structure, and magnetic properties of many molecules such as conjugated macrocycles, metal heterocyclic compounds, and certain metal clusters. Porphyrinoids (including porphyrin) are of particular interest in terms of diverse aromaticity. Various indices therefore have been used to predict the aromaticity of porphyrin-like macrocycles. However, the reliability of these indices for porphyinoids is always questionable. In order to assess the performance of the indices, we have selected six representative indices to predict the aromaticity of 35 porphyrinoids. The calculated values were then compared with the corresponding results obtained from experiments. Our studies suggest that the theoretical prediction by nucleus independent chemical shifts (NICS), topology of the induced magnetic field (TIMF), anisotropy of the induced current density (AICD), and gauge including magnetically induced current method (GIMIC) are essentially consistent with experimental evidence in all 35 cases and thus are preferred indices. Computational and theoretical techniques: Based on density functional theory, the performance of the NICS, TIMF, AICD, GIMIC, harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity (HOMA), and multicenter bond order (MCBO) indices were evaluated theoretically. Molecular geometries were optimized at the M06-2X/6-311G** level. NMR calculations using GIAO or CGST method were performed at the M06-2X/6-311G** level. The above calculations were carried out using Gaussian16 suite. The TIMF, GIMIC, HOMA, and MCBO indices were obtained using the Multiwfn program. Porphyrins have multiple roles in living and nonliving systems because of their exceptional tunable chemical and physical properties. They are interesting macrocyclic compounds that could be modified in a number of ways. The structural diversity of porphyrinoids make them a unique choice for functional devices exhibiting photo‐ and electrochemical properties. Their properties can be modified or altered by either protonating the nitrogen atoms or by inducing charge transfer to the metal center. Structural changes induced by flattening and planar distortions, redox reactions, solvents, and porphyrin aggregations also influence the photo‐ and electro‐chemical properties of porphyrinoids. This review gives a brief explanation on the effects of structural orientation, molecular structure, and charge on the properties of porphyrinoids.
