1. Simple Behavior of Primary Cross Sections for Low Mass Particles in p-pbar Collisions at y=0 and sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV

Abstract

A set of inclusive cross sections at zero rapidity is presented for p-pbar interactions at center of mass energy sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV. Six particle cross sections are corrected for secondary contributions from decays of higher mass resonances in order to produce a set of primary cross sections. The primary cross sections per spin state are well described by d(sigma^p)/dy|_(y=0)= 0.721*(pi*lambdabar_(pi)^2)*exp(-m/T), where m is the particle rest mass, T=hbar*c/r_h, and r_h=0.97 fm. The deuterium production cross section is also described if r_h is replaced by r_A=r_h*A^(1/3). The same exponential in m and T describes primary charm fractions in e+e- collisions at least up to the J/Psi mass. There is no significant evidence for strangeness or charm suppression if only primary production of light hadrons is considered. There is evidence that the primary cross section for each particle may have the same value for pp and pbar-p collisions and that it may have nearly constant values between sqrt(s)=63 GeV and sqrt(s)=1800 GeV. Fits to the final state transverse momenta of the particles using a gas model favor a temperature T=132 MeV, a chemical potential mu=129 MeV, and a transverse flow of the gas with beta_f=0.27., Comment: 20 pages, 18 figures

Abstract

The yield for the multi-strange $\Xi^{-}$ hyperon has been measured in 6 AGeV Au+Au collisions via reconstruction of its decay products $\pi^{-}$ and $\Lambda$, the latter also being reconstructed from its daughter tracks of $\pi^{-}$ and p. The measurement is rather close to the threshold for $\Xi^{-}$ production and therefore provides an important test of model predictions. The measured yield for $\Xi^{-}$ and $\Lambda$ are compared for several centralities. In central collisions the $\Xi^{-}$ yield is found to be in excellent agreement with statistical and transport model predictions, suggesting that multi-strange hadron production approaches chemical equilibrium in high baryon density nuclear matter., Comment: Submitted to PRL

Abstract

Source images are extracted from two-particle correlations constructed from strange and non-strange hadrons produced in 6 AGeV Au + Au collisions. Very different source images result from pp vs p$\Lambda$ vs $\pi^-\pi^-$ correlations. These observations suggest important differences in the space-time emission histories for protons, pions and neutral strange baryons produced in the same events.

Abstract

We have measured deconfined hadronic volumes, $4.4 < V < 13.0$ fm$^{3}$, produced by a one dimensional (1D) expansion. These volumes are directly proportional to the charged particle pseudorapidity densities $6.75 < dN_{c}/d\eta < 20.2$. The hadronization temperature is $T = 179.5 \pm 5$ (syst) MeV. Using Bjorken's 1D model,the hadronization energy density is $\epsilon_{F} = 1.10 \pm 0.26$ (stat) GeV/fm$^{3}$ corresponding to an excitation of $24.8 \pm 6.2$ (stat) quark-gluon degrees of freedom., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

Rapidity distributions of protons from central $^{197}$Au + $^{197}$Au collisions measured by the E895 Collaboration in the energy range from 2 to 8 AGeV at the Brookhaven AGS are presented. Longitudinal flow parameters derived using a thermal model including collective longitudinal expansion are extracted from these distributions. The E895 Collaboration at the Brookhaven AGS has performed a systematic investigation of Au+Au collisions at 2-8 AGeV, using a large-acceptance Time Projection Chamber. Abstract

Directed flow measurements for $\Lambda$-hyperons are presented and compared to those for protons produced in the same Au+Au collisions (2, 4, and 6 AGeV; $b < 5 - 6$ fm). The measurements indicate that $\Lambda$-hyperons flow consistently in the same direction and with smaller magnitudes than those of protons. Such a strong positive flow [for $\Lambda$s] has been predicted in calculations which include the influence of the $\Lambda$-nucleon potential. The experimental flow ratio $\Lambda$/p is in qualitative agreement with expectations ($\sim 2/3$) from the quark counting rule at 2 AGeV but is found to decrease with increasing beam energy., Comment: 5 pages including 4 Figs. Abstract

We have measured the sideward flow of neutral strange ($K^0_s$) mesons in 6 AGeV Au + Au collisions. A prominent anti-flow signal is observed for an impact parameter range (b $\lesssim 7$ fm) which spans central and mid-central events. Abstract

Two-pion correlation functions, measured as a function of azimuthal emission angle with respect to the reaction plane, provide novel information on the anisotropic shape and orientation of the pion-emitting zone formed in heavy ion collisions. We present the first experimental determination of this information, for semi-central Au+Au collisions at 2-6 AGeV. Abstract

A sample of Lambda's produced in 2 A*GeV Ni + Cu collisions has been obtained with the EOS Time Projection Chamber at the Bevalac. Low background in the invariant mass distribution allows for the unambiguous demonstration of Lambda directed flow. The transverse mass spectrum at mid-rapidity has the characteristic shoulder-arm shape of particles undergoing radial transverse expansion. A linear dependence of Lambda multiplicity on impact parameter is observed, from which a total Lambda + Sigma^0 production cross section of $112 +/- 24 mb is deduced. Abstract

We present results of a search for strange quark matter (strangelets) in 11.5 A GeV/c Au+Pb collisions from the 1994 and 1995 runs of experiment E864 at Brookhaven's AGS. We observe no strangelet candidates and set a 90% confidence level upper limit of approximately 3x10**-8 per 10% central interaction for the production of |Z|=1 and |Z|=2 strangelets over a large mass range and with metastable lifetimes of about 50 ns or more. Abstract

The mean transverse kinetic energies of the fragments formed in the interaction of 1 A GeV Au+C have been determined. An energy balance argument indicates the presence of a collective energy which increases in magnitude with increasing multiplicity and accounts for nearly half of the measured mean transverse kinetic energy. The radial flow velocity associated with the collective energy yields estimates for the time required to expand to the freeze-out volume. Isentropic trajectories in the temperature-density plane are shown for the expansion and indicate that the system goes through the critical region at the same multiplicities as deduced from a statistical analysis. Here, the expansion time is approximately 70 fm/c.

Abstract

A systematic study of energy spectra for light particles emitted at midrapidity from Au+Au collisions at E=0.25-1.15 A GeV reveals a significant non-thermal component consistent with a collective radial flow. This component is evaluated as a function of bombarding energy and event centrality. Comparisons to Quantum Molecular Dynamics (QMD) and Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) models are made for different equations of state., Comment: 10 pages of text and 4 figures (all ps files in a uuencoded package).

Abstract

We present the first comprehensive measurement of leading Lambda's and Delta(++)'s in p+Pb collisions at 19 GeV/c using the E941/E864 spectrometer at the AGS. In comparison with the measurement of leading protons and neutrons using the same spectrometer, it is found that the cross section for baryon flavor change is large and strongly depends on rapidity, which is very different from the expectation of simple diquark-quark fragmentation of the incident proton. A suppression of leading Lambda production in the forward rapidity region compared with nonstrange leading baryons is also observed. The relative probability of the projectile proton fragmentation into a Delta(++) versus into a neutron is found to be about 35% in the region of 2.7less than or equal toyless than or equal to3.1. We will discuss the impact of these results on the dynamics of baryon fragmentation and baryon number transport in nuclear collisions.

Abstract

Momentum spectra of charged pions over nearly full rapidity coverage from target to beam rapidity have been extracted from 0-5% most central Au +Au collisions in the beam energy range from 2A to 8A GeV by the E895 experiment. Using a thermal parametrization to fit the transverse mass spectra, rapidity density distributions are extracted. The observed spectra are compared with predictions from the RQMD version 2.3 cascade model and also to a thermal model including longitudinal flow. The total 4pi yields of the charged pions are used to infer an initial-state entropy produced in the collisions.

Abstract

It is shown that the Fisher Droplet Model (FDM), percolation and nuclear multifragmentation share the common features of reducibility (stochasticity in multiplicity distributions) and thermal scaling (one-fragment production probabilities are Boltzmann factors). Barriers obtained, for cluster production on percolation lattices, from the Boltzmann factors show a power-law dependence on cluster size with an exponent of 0.42 +- 0.02. The EOS Au multifragmentation data yield barriers with a power-law exponent of 0.68 +- 0.03. Abstract

An exclusive study of the interaction of 1{ital A}GeV Au with C shows a separability into two stages: a prompt stage involving emission of most {ital Z}=1 and some {ital Z}=2 particles and a second stage involving the decay of an equilibrated remnant, which typically undergoes multifragmentation. The mean mass, charge, excitation energy, and the initial temperature {ital T}{sub {ital i}} of the remnant have been determined as a function of the total charge multiplicity, {ital m}, as has the freeze-out temperature {ital T}{sub {ital f}}. Both {ital T}{sub {ital i}} and {ital T}{sub {ital f}} increase linearly with {ital m} and their values at the critical point have been determined. {ital T}{sub {ital f}} rises monotonically with excitation energy as expected for a continuous phase transition. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}

Abstract

The yield for the multistrange Xi(-) hyperon has been measured in 6A GeV Au+Au collisions via reconstruction of its decay products pi(-) and Lambda, the latter also being reconstructed from its daughter tracks of pi(-) and p. The measurement is rather close to the threshold for Xi(-) production and therefore provides an important test of model predictions. The measured yield for Xi(-) and Lambda are compared for several centralities. In central collisions the Xi(-) yield is found to be in excellent agreement with statistical and transport model predictions, suggesting that multistrange hadron production approaches chemical equilibrium in high baryon density nuclear matter.

Abstract

The fragment yields from the multifragmentation of gold, lanthanum, and krypton nuclei obtained by the EOS Collaboration are examined in terms of Fisher's droplet formalism modified to account for Coulomb energy. The critical exponents sigma and tau and the surface energy coefficient c(0) are obtained. Estimates are made of the pressure-temperature and temperature-density coexistence curve of finite neutral nuclear matter as well as the location of the critical point.

Abstract

Source images are extracted from two-particle correlations constructed from strange and nonstrange hadrons produced in 6A GeV Au+Au collisions. Very different source images result from pp vs pLambda vs pi(-)pi(-) correlations. Scaling by transverse mass can describe the apparent source size ratio for p/pi(-) but not for Lambda/pi(-) or Lambda/p. These observations suggest important differences in the space-time emission histories for protons, pions, and neutral strange baryons produced in the same events.
