Saturn's quasi-periodic planet-encircling storms are the largest convecting outbursts in the Solar System. The last eruption was in 1990. A new eruption started in December 2010 and presented the first-ever opportunity to observe such episodic storms from a spacecraft in orbit around Saturn. Here, we analyze images acquired with the Cassini Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS), which captured the storm's birth, evolution and demise. In studying the end of the convective activity, we also analyze the Saturn Electrostatic Discharge (SED) signals detected by the Radio and Plasma Wave Science (RPWS) instrument. The Iapetus -1:0 nodal bending wave, the first spiral wave ever described in Saturn's rings, has been seen again for the first time in 29 years. We demonstrate that it is in fact the nodal bending wave, not the 1:0 apsidal density wave as previously reported. We use wavelet analysis to determine the wavelength profile, thus deriving the surface density at every point in the region covered by the bending wave. This profile is consistent with surface densities measured from more localized spiral density waves in the outer Cassini Division and the inner and mid-A Ring, varying smoothly from the low values of the former to the higher values of the latter. Most remarkably, our analysis indicates that there is no significant change in surface density across the boundary between the outer Cassini Division and the inner-A ring, despite the very abrupt increase in optical depth and reflected brightness at this location. We consider anew the nature of the classically identified "inner edge of the A ring," given that it does not appear to be correlated with any abrupt increase in surface density. There is an abrupt increase in surface density at the Pandora 5:4 density wave, ~300 km outward of the A ring's inner edge. We report the discovery of several large "propeller" moons in the outer part of Saturn's A ring, objects large enough to be followed over the 5-year duration of the Cassini mission. These are the first objects ever discovered that can be tracked as individual moons, but do not orbit in empty space. We infer sizes up to 1--2 km for the unseen moonlets at the center of the propeller-shaped structures, though many structural and photometric properties of propeller structures remain unclear. Finally, we demonstrate that some propellers undergo sustained non-keplerian orbit motion. Voyager images and Cassini occultation data have previously shown that the behavior of the outer edge of Saturn's massive B ring is determined only in part by a static response to the 2:1 inner Lindblad resonance with Mimas. In Cassini images of this region, we find, in addition to the expected wavenumber-2 forced distortion, evidence for unforced self-excited wavenumber-3, wavenumber-2, and wavenumber-1 normal modes. These are the first observations to suggest substantial wave amplification in Saturn's broad rings. Moreover, the presence of these free modes strongly implicates viscous overstability as their underlying cause and, by inference, the cause for most if not all of the unforced structures throughout the high-mass-density B ring and in other high-mass-density regions in Saturn's rings. Analysis of each of the inferred waves reveals a consistent lower bound on the average surface mass density of ~ 44 g/cm^2 for the outer 250 km of the ring, though the true surface density could be as high as 100 g/cm^2 or higher. Interference between the forced and free wavenumber-2 modes yields a total wavenumber-2 pattern that varies in amplitude and orientation with a characteristic period of ~ 5.5 years. We also find localized disturbances, including 3.5-km-tall vertical structures, that provide circumstantial evidence for embedded massive bodies in the Mimas resonance zone. We have developed a semi-analytic method of parameterizing N-body simulations of self-gravity wakes in Saturn's rings, describing their properties by means of only 6 numbers: 3 optical depths and 3 weighting factors. These numbers are obtained using a density-estimation procedure that finds the frequencies of various values of local density within a simulated ring patch. Application of our parameterization to a suite of N-body simulations implies that the distribution of local optical depths is trimodal, rather than bimodal as previous authors have assumed. Rings dominated by self-gravity wakes appear to be mostly empty space. The implications of this result for the analysis of occultation data are more conceptual than practical. The only adjustment needed is that the model parameter $\tau_{gap}$ should be interpreted as representing the area-weighted average optical depth within the gaps (or inter-wake regions). The most significant consequence of our results applies to the question of why "propeller" structures observed in the mid-A ring are seen as relative-bright features, even though the most prominent features of simulated propellers are regions of relatively low density. We find preliminary quantitative support for the hypothesis that propellers would be bright if they involve a local and temporary disruption of self-gravity wakes, flooding the region with more "photometrically active" material (i.e., material that can contribute to the rings' local optical depth) even though the overall density is lower, and thus raising their apparent brightnesses in agreement with observations. (Abridged) The following describes a model of a broad planetary ring whose sharp edge is confined by a satellite's m^th Lindblad resonance (LR). This model uses a streamline formalism to calculate the ring's internal forces, namely, ring gravity, pressure, viscosity, as well as a hypothetical drag force. The model calculates the streamlines' forced orbit elements and surface density throughout the perturbed ring. The model is then applied to the outer edge of Saturn's B ring, which is maintained by an m=2 inner LR with the satellite Mimas. Ring models are used to illustrate how a ring's perturbed state depends on the ring's physical properties: surface density, viscosity, dispersion velocity, and the hypothetical drag force. A comparison of models to the observed outer B ring suggests that the ring's surface density there is between 10 and 280 gm/cm^2. The ring's edge also indicates where the viscous torque counterbalances the perturbing satellite's gravitational torque on the ring. But an examination of seemingly conventional viscous B ring models shows that they all fail to balance these torques at the ring's edge. This is due ring self-gravity and the fact that a viscous ring tends to be nearly peri-aligned with the satellite, which reduces the satellite's torque on the ring and makes the ring's edge more difficult to maintain. Nonetheless, the following shows that a torque balance can still be achieved in a viscous B ring, but only in an extreme case where the ratio of the ring's bulk/shear viscosities satisfy ~10^4. However, if the dissipation of the ring's forced motions is instead dominated by a weak drag force, then the satellite can exert a much stronger torque that can counterbalance the ring's viscous torque., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal on April 3, 2009

The Cassini cameras have captured the opposition effect in Saturn rings with a high radial resolution at phase angles down to 0.01o in the entire main ring system. We derive phase functions from 0.01 to 25 degrees of phase angle in the Wide-Angle Camera clear filters with a central wavelength of 0.611microns and phase functions from 0.001 to 25 degrees of phase angle in the Narrow-Angle and Wide-Angle Cameras color filters (from the blue 0.451 microns to the near infrared 0.752 microns). We characterize the morphology of the phase functions of different features in the main rings. We find that the shape of the phase function is accurately represented by a logarithmic model (Bobrov 1970, in Surfaces and Interiors of Planets and Satellites, Academic, edited by A. Dollfus). For practical purposes, we also parametrize the phase curves by a simple linear-by-part model (Lumme and Irvine 1976, Astronomical Journal, 81, p865), which provides three morphological parameters : the amplitude and the Half-Width at Half-Maximum (HWHM) of the surge, and the slope S of the linear-part of the phase function at larger phase angles. Our analysis demonstrates that all of these parameters show trends with the optical depth of the rings. These trends imply that the optical depth is a key-element determining the physical properties which act on the opposition effect. Wavelength variations of the morphological parameters of the surge show important trends with the optical depth in the green filter (0.568 microns), which implies that grain size effects are maximum in this wavelength., Comment: 5 tables and 13 figures

We present an extensive data set of ~150 localized features from Cassini images of Saturn's Ring A, a third of which are demonstrated to be persistent by their appearance in multiple images, and half of which are resolved well enough to reveal a characteristic "propeller" shape. We interpret these features as the signatures of small moonlets embedded within the ring, with diameters between 40 and 500 meters. The lack of significant brightening at high phase angle indicates that they are likely composed primarily of macroscopic particles, rather than dust. With the exception of two features found exterior to the Encke Gap, these objects are concentrated entirely within three narrow (~1000 km) bands in the mid-A Ring that happen to be free from local disturbances from strong density waves. However, other nearby regions are similarly free of major disturbances but contain no propellers. The New Horizons spacecraft will achieve a wide range of measurement objectives at the Pluto system, including color and panchromatic maps, 1.25-2.50 micron spectral images for studying surface compositions, and measurements of Pluto's atmosphere (temperatures, composition, hazes, and the escape rate). Additional measurement objectives include topography, surface temperatures, and the solar wind interaction. The fulfillment of these measurement objectives will broaden our understanding of the Pluto system, such as the origin of the Pluto system, the processes operating on the surface, the volatile transport cycle, and the energetics and chemistry of the atmosphere. The mission, payload, and strawman observing sequences have been designed to acheive the NASA-specified measurement objectives and maximize the science return. We describe a powerful signal processing method, the continuous wavelet transform, and use it to analyze radial structure in Cassini ISS images of Saturn's rings. Wavelet analysis locally separates signal components in frequency space, causing many structures to become evident that are difficult to observe with the naked eye. Density waves, generated at resonances with saturnian satellites orbiting outside (or within) the rings, are particularly amenable to such analysis. We identify a number of previously unobserved weak waves, and demonstrate the wavelet transform's ability to isolate multiple waves superimposed on top of one another. We also present two wave-like structures that we are unable to conclusively identify. In a multi-step semi-automated process, we recover four parameters from clearly observed weak spiral density waves: the local ring surface density, the local ring viscosity, the precise resonance location (useful for pointing images, and potentially for refining saturnian astrometry), and the wave amplitude (potentially providing new constraints upon the masses of the perturbing moons). Our derived surface densities have less scatter than previous measurements that were derived from stronger non-linear waves, and suggest a gentle linear increase in surface density from the inner to the mid-A Ring. We show that ring viscosity consistently increases from the Cassini Division outward to the Encke Gap. Meaningful upper limits on ring thickness can be placed on the Cassini Division (3.0 m at r~118,800 km, 4.5 m at r~120,700 km) and the inner A Ring (10 to 15 m for r<127,000 km)., Comment: 43 pages, 21 figures; To appear in Icarus

We describe a model that accounts for the complex morphology of spiral density waves raised in Saturn's rings by the co-orbital satellites, Janus and Epimetheus. We predict how a remote observer would see the brightness variations of giant planets similar to Jupiter and Saturn as they orbit their central stars. We model the geometry of Jupiter, Saturn and Saturn's rings for varying orbital and viewing parameters. Scattering properties for the planets and rings at wavelenghts 0.6-0.7 microns follow Pioneer and Voyager observations, namely, planets are forward scattering and rings are backward scattering. Images of the planet with or without rings are simulated and used to calculate the disk-averaged luminosity varying along the orbit, that is, a light curve is generated. We find that the different scattering properties of Jupiter and Saturn (without rings) make a substantial difference in the shape of their light curves. Saturn-size rings increase the apparent luminosity of the planet by a factor of 2-3 for a wide range of geometries. Rings produce asymmetric light curves that are distinct from the light curve of the planet without rings. If radial velocity data are available for the planet, the effect of the ring on the light curve can be distinguished from effects due to orbital eccentricity. Non-ringed planets on eccentric orbits produce light curves with maxima shifted relative to the position of the maximum planet's phase. Given radial velocity data, the amount of the shift restricts the planet's unknown orbital inclination and therefore its mass. Combination of radial velocity data and a light curve for a non-ringed planet on an eccentric orbit can also be used to constrain the surface scattering properties of the planet. To summarize our results for the detectability of exoplanets in reflected light, we present a chart of light curve amplitudes of non-ringed planets for different eccentricities, inclinations, and the viewing azimuthal angles of the observer., Comment: 40 pages, 13 figures, submitted to Ap.J

As a fundamental property, the energy budget affects many aspeCts of planets and their moons, such as thermal structure, meteorology, and evolution. We use the observations from two Cassini spectrometers (i.e., CIRS and VIMS) to explore one important component of the energy budget the total emitted power of Jupiter, Saturn, and Titan (Li et al., 2010, 2011, 2012). Key results are: (1) The Cassini observations precisely measure the global-average emitted power of three bodies: 14.l0+/-0.03 Wm(exp -2), 4.952+/-0.035 Wm(exp -2), and 2.834+/-0.012 Wm(exp -2) for Jupiter, Saturn, and Titan, respectively. (2) The meridional distribution of emitted power displays a significant asymmetry between the northern and southern hemispheres on Jupiter and Saturn. On Titan, the meridional distribution of emitted power is basically symmetric around the equator. (3) Comparing with the Voyager measurements, the new Cassini observations reveal a significant temporal variation of emitted power on both Jupiter and Saturn: i) The asymmetry between the two hemisphere shown in the Cassini epoch (2000-2010) is not present in the Voyager epoch (1979-1980); and ii) From the Voyager epoch to the Cassini epoch, the global-average emitted power appeared to increase by approx 3.8% for Jupiter and approx 6.4% for Saturn. (4) Together with previous measurements of the absorbed solar power on Titan, the new Cassini measurements of emitted power provide the first observational evidence of the global energy balance on Titan. The uncertainty in the previous measurements of absorbed solar energy places an upper limit on its energy imbalance of 6.0% on Titan. The exploration of emitted power is the first part of a series of studies examining the temporal variability of the energy budget on the giant planets and Titan. Currently, We are measuring the absorbed solar energy in order to determine new constraints on the energy budgets of Jupiter, Saturn, and Titan.

The zonal jets on the giant planets are generally thought to be stable with time. Recently, there are still some debates about the general thought. Here, we report a significant temporal variation of the equatorial jet at high-altitude on Saturn. Long-term (2004-2009) observations by Cassini reveal that wind speed at the 60-mbar level increased from 270 m/s in 2004 to 290 m/s in 2008, while the wind speed has been mostly constant over time at the 500-mbar level in the southern equatorial region. The Cassini observations further reveal that the equatorial jet intensified approximately 60 m/s in the stratosphere (1-5 mbar) from 2005 to 2008. The fact that the wind acceleration is weaker at the 60-mbar level (approximately 20 m/s) than at the 1-mbar level (approximately 60 m/s) demonstrates that the equatorial oscillation is damped when it propagates downwards to the tropopause around 60 mbar. The direct measurement of the varying equatorial jet around the tropopause also serves as a key boundary condition when deriving the thermal wind fields in the stratosphere.

Public support and enthusiasm for astronomy have been strong in the final decades of the twentieth century. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than with the Hubble Space Telescope (HCT), a grand endeavor, which is enabling astronomers to make giant strides in understanding our universe, our place in it, and our relation to it. The NASAs first infrared observatory, the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF), promises to take the crucial next steps towards understanding the formation of stars and galaxies. Toward their completion, the HST and Beyond Committee identifies major goals, whose accomplishment will justify a commitment well into the next century: (1) the detailed study of the birth and evolution of normal galaxies such as the Milky Way; (2) the detection of Earth-like planets around other stars and the search for evidence of life on them; (3) NASA should develop a space observatory of aperture 4m or larger, optimized for imaging and spectroscopy over the wavelength range 1-5 microns; and (4) NASA should develop the capability for space interferometry.

The near infrared observations of the 3 Jul. 1989 occultation of 28 Sagittarii by Saturn and its rings made from seven different telescopes spread around the world were reduced and synthesized. These observations were combined with Voyager data to study the dynamical state of Saturn's rings. This unique event, which occurred eight years after the Voyager flybys, provides a temporal baseline over which kinematical and dynamical phenomena within the rings may be examined in detail.

Progress made in research devoted to examining Voyager imaging data for the purpose of understanding the kinematics and dynamics of the Neptune ring arcs is reported. It was found that a radial distortion of amplitude 30 km is traveling through the arcs with a perturbation by the nearby satellite 1989N4. Two new and smaller arcs within the outer Neptunian ring were also discovered. The longitudinal spacing of all arcs is roughly that expected for corotational arc shepherding by 1989N4 provided that not all corotation sites in the arc region are filled. The semimajor axis of the arcs' orbit inferred from their observed mean motion and the latest Neptune gravitational parameters is, within uncertainties, identical to the location of the 42:43 corotation-inclination resonance of 1989N4: an observation which supports the notion of corotational arc-shepherding. This hypothesis also explains that the 15 km radial width of the arcs are due to a spread in forced orbital eccentricities. Clumps within the arcs were observed at a greater frequency than previously reported. These features may be the manifestation of big bodies within the arcs providing a source of ring dust, or they may be a kinematical effect associated with the crossing of eccentric orbits at quadrature. The inclusion of ground based observations of the arcs taken up to five years ago will lengthen the baseline over which arc dynamics may be studied and should lead to a refinement in the position of the Neptune spin and invariable plane poles.
