International audience; Although Ancient Egyptians mummified millions of animals over the course of one millennium, many details of these mummification protocols remain unknown. Multi-scale propagation phase-contrast X-ray synchrotron microtomography was used to visualise an ancient Egyptian crocodile mummy housed at the Musee des Confluences (Lyon, France). This state-of-the-art non-destructive imaging technique revealed the complete interior anatomy of the mummy in three dimensions. Here, we present detailed insight into the complex postmortem treatment of a decaying crocodile cadaver in preparation for mummification. Except for the head and the extremities of the limbs, everything beneath the skin of the crocodile (i.e. organs, muscles, and even most of the skeleton) was removed to cease further putrefaction. This unexpected finding demonstrates that earlier knowledge obtained from textual and other archaeological sources does not sufficiently reflect the diversity of mummification protocols implemented by Ancient Egyptians.

International audience; Ancient Egyptians always had an intense and complex relationship with animals in daily life as well as in religion. Despite the fact that research on this relationship has been a topic of study, gaps in our knowledge still remain. This volume presents well over 30 contributions that explore Human-Animal relationships from the Predynastic to the Roman period.The essays cover topics such as animal husbandry, mummification, species-specific studies, the archaeology and economy of the animal cults, funerary practices, iconography and symbolism. The contribution of archaeometrical methods, such as DNA analyses, balms’ analyses, AMS dating, radiography, and 3D imaging, are also represented as these play a significant role in furthering our understanding of the human-animal relationship in Egypt.The range of subject matter and contributors are indicative of the importance of animals and the role that they played in ancient Egypt and Nubia, and emphasises the need for continued inter- and multidisciplinary studies on the subject. The research outlined in this volume has helped, for example, to better identify ways of sourcing the animals used in mummification, contributed to establishing the eras during which animal mummification became common, and highlighted new techniques for acquiring DNA.The fresh insights and diversity of topics makes the volume of interest for professionals (Egyptologists, (archaeo-)zoologists and historians), as well as those who are interested in Egyptology and in the relationship between humans and animals. ‘Creatures of Earth, Water and Sky’ is the result of the first international conference ever dedicated to animals in ancient Egypt and Nubia (the International Symposium on Animals in Ancient Egypt, ISAAE 1, June 1-3 2016, held in Lyon).

Le Book of Hours associe Apis à l'Occident et Mnévis à l'Orient. Cette association trouve son explication dans deux passages énigmatiques du Papyrus Tebtynis et du Papyrus Rhind I qui lient Apis et Mnévis aux fils d'Horus et aux parties du corps du défunt à momifier.

International audience; Le site de Lattara livre régulièrement des restes de carnivores. En 2006, un squelette partiel de loutre en connexion anatomique a été découvert dans une fosse à l'intérieur de l'enceinte urbaine. Cette découverte, qui s'intègre parfaitement dans le cadre environnemental du site, offre de nouvelles informations concernant la biodiversité animale et la répartition géographique de la loutre. Ce squelette partiel ne montre aucune trace d'exploitation de l'animal à des fins alimentaires ni de récupération de la peau. L'enfouissement de ce cadavre met en évidence une volonté d'assainissement de l'espace urbain. La présence de ce prédateur pose la question des relations de ce dernier avec l'homme, qui peuvent être de nature différente, prédation ou apprivoisement. Cet animal a également pu être attiré par les espaces, les ressources et les déchets générés par l'occupation humaine.

International audience; The excavations of the Mission Archéologique Française du Bubasteion (MAFB) directed by Alain Zivie have provided thousands of bones and hundreds of mummies of cats. Since the beginning of the 1990s, 331 mummies have been X-rayed. The study of 272 mummies has allowed us to classify individuals into 3 categories (young, young adults and adults) and to highlight that more than two-thirds of these animals were deliberately killed. A new study of these X-ray photographs compared to a new frame of reference concerning the age of synostosis of the bones from present domestic cats allows us to specify the age at death of these animals. New questions arise, for example: Was there a recommended age to kill these cats and to turn them into mummies? Was the age of the slaughtered animals different from the age of the animals that died a natural death?; Les fouilles de la Mission Archéologique Française du Bubasteion (MAFB) dirigées par Alain Zivie ont livré des milliers d'ossements et des centaines de momies de chats. Dans les années 1990, 331 momies ont été radiographiées et l'étude de 272 d'entre-elles a déjà permis de classer les individus en 3 catégories (jeunes, jeunes adultes et adultes) Un nouveau référentiel des âges de synostose des os de chats, appliqué à ces momies radiographiées a permis de préciser l'âge de mort des ces animaux et mettre en évidence qu'environ les deux tiers des individus étaient morts de mort violente par écrasement de la boite crânienne et/ou étirement et une torsion du cou. De nouvelles questions se posent alors : un âge était préconisé pour abattre et momifier ces chats ? L'âge des animaux abattus différait-il de l'âge des animaux morts naturellement ?

The excavation of Barbes-et-Fon-Danis at Saint-Laurent-de-Carnols (Gard, France) has provided a faunal assemblage dated at the transition period between the first and the second Iron Age. This archaeozoological study provides new information on dietary practices and the processing of animal waste during the 5th and 4th centuries BC. The sample comes from a courtyard and shows dietary practices related exclusively to the domestic consumption of the close inhabitants of this courtyard which was used as a rubbish dump. The faunal remains indicate a meat supply mainly based on traditional livestock (cattle, sheep, goat and pig), associated to hunting strategies (red deer and boar).; Les fouilles du site des Barbes-et-Fon-Danis à Saint-Laurent-de-Carnols (Gard) ont livré un assemblage faunique datant de la période de transition entre le premier et le deuxième âge du Fer. Les résultats archéozoologiques issus de cette étude apportent avant tout de nouvelles données sur les modes alimentaires et la gestion des déchets d'origine animale pour la 2nde moitié du Ve et la 1ère moitié du IVe s. av. J.-C. L'échantillon provient d'une cour aménagée en plein air et témoigne de pratiques alimentaires liées à une consommation exclusivement domestique des habitants installés à proximité de cette cour ayant servi de dépotoir. La faune présente témoigne d'un approvisionnement fondé sur une activité d'élevage avec la présence majoritaire de mammifères domestiques classiques (bœuf, caprinés et porc) associée à une activité cynégétique (cerf et sanglier).
