Abstract

The end-of-life event of the battery system of an electric vehicle is defined by a fixed end-of-life threshold value. However, this kind of end-of-life threshold does not capture the application and battery characteristics and, consequently, it has a low accuracy in describing the real end-of-life event. This paper proposes a systematic methodology to determine the end-of-life threshold that describes accurately the end-of-life event. The proposed methodology can be divided into three phases. In the first phase, the health indicators that represent the aging behavior of the battery are defined. In the second phase, the application specifications and battery characteristics are evaluated to generate the end-of-life criteria. Finally, in the third phase, the simulation environment used to calculate the end-of-life threshold is designed. In this third phase, the electric-thermal behavior of the battery at different aging conditions is simulated using an electro-thermal equivalent circuit model. The proposed methodology is applied to a high-energy electric vehicle application and to a high-power electric vehicle application. The stated hypotheses and the calculated end-of-life threshold of the high-energy application are empirically validated. Abstract

The relatively short lifetime of rare-gas discharge pump light sources for high-power cw solid-state lasers is caused mainly by vaporized cathode emitter material reacting with the thermally highly loaded quartz wall. The introduction of new bipolar electrodes without special emitter materials mounted on hot-ended molybdenum-cup seals, together with 60-kHz ac operation, makes possible the application of a tungsten halide cleaning cycle within the lamp bulb. This new type of high-power rare-gas pump light source exhibits 20% better radiation efficiency, 20% lower Nd:YAG laser threshold, and considerably extended lifetime. more...

Abstract

High mortality rates of invasive fungal disease (IFD), especially invasive aspergillosis (IA), in immuno-compromised haematological patients and current diagnostic limitations require improvement of detection of fungal pathogens by defining the optimal use of biomarkers and clinical samples. Concurrent bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and peripheral blood samples of 99 haematological patients with suspected IFD were investigated within a multicentre prospective study. Diagnostic performance of a galactomannan (GM) enzyme immune assay (EIA), a 1,3-beta-D-glucan assay (BDG), an Aspergillus PCR, and a multifungal DNA-microarray (Chip) alone or in combination were calculated. IFD were classified as proven (n = 3), probable (n = 34), possible (n = 33), and no IFD (n = 29) according to EORTC/MSG criteria. GM, PCR, and Chip showed superior diagnostic performance in BAL than in blood, whereas specificity of BDG in BAL was poor (48% (14/29)). The combination of GM (BAL) with BDG (blood) showed sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and DOR (diagnostic odds ratio) of 92% (34/37), 93% (27/29), 94%, 90%, and 153.0, respectively. Combining GM (BAL) with PCR (BAL) showed convincing diagnostic potential for diagnosing IA with sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and DOR of 85% (17/20), 97% (28/29), 94%, 90%, and 158.7. Addition of the DNA-microarray resulted in further detection of two mucormycetes infections. In 1 out of 15 Aspergillus DNA-positive samples a triazole resistance-mediating Cyp51A mutation was found. Combination of biomarkers is superior to their sole use in diagnosing IFD, particularly IA. Integrating blood and BAL samples into a diagnostic algorithm is an advantageous approach. Abstract

24th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference, 21-25 September 2009, Hamburg, Germany; 2390-2393, SCHOTT Solar Thin Film has successfully brought her a-Si/a-Si tandem cell technology for ASITM modules to full production. The production site in Jena with a capacity of 35 MW/a started end of 2007 and ramp up was completed in 2008. Due to continuous process improvements the initial power of the best module could be improved to 127 W which corresponds to 9.4 % initial aperture efficiency. Indoor and outdoor light induced degradation of the 1.4 m² modules is demonstrated to be reproducible around 18 %. Recently a new power class with stabilized 103 W could be introduced. Best small area development cells stabilize at 8.5 % which give the near term perspective of 110 W stable module power or 8 % module aperture area efficiency. A round robin comparison together with various institutes shows a high degree of reproducibility and accuracy for the power measurement of stabilized ASITM modules within +/- 1 %. Long term monitoring of some of our early PV installations demonstrates an excellent stability over more than one decade. Schott ASITM modules with thermally isolated rear side reveal a significant annealing effect and show an improved PR of up to 4 %. more...

For real-time as well as off-line transmission of high quality audio signals over the Internet, the best quality at very low bit-rate is desired. MPEG-2 Layer 3 audio supports close to FM stereo quality (11 kHz bandwidth, 24 kHz sampling frequency) at 64 kbit/s total bit rate using advanced stereo coding techniques. The decoder supports real-time decoding on workstations or fast PCs. An evaluation of the cyclic behavior of three aircraft engine turbine disk materials was conducted to compare their relative crack initiation and crack propagation resistance. The disk alloys investigated were Inconel 718, hot isostatically pressed and forged powder metallurgy Rene '95, and as-hot-isostatically pressed Rene '95. The objective was to compare the hot isostatically pressed powder metallurgy alloy forms with conventionally processed superalloys as represented by Inconel 718. Cyclic behavior was evaluated at 650 C both under continuously cycling and a fifteen minute tensile hold time cycle to simulate engine conditions. Analysis of the test data were made to evaluate the strain range partitioning and energy exhaustion concepts for predicting hold time effects on low cycle fatigue. more...
