Growth hormone (GH) has been used for over 35 years, and its safety and efficacy has been studied extensively. Experimental studies showing the permissive role of GH/insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-I) in carcinogenesis have raised concerns regarding the safety of GH replacement in children and adults who have received treatment for cancer and those with intracranial and pituitary tumours. A consensus statement was produced to guide decision-making on GH replacement in children and adult survivors of cancer, in those treated for intracranial and pituitary tumours and in patients with increased cancer risk. With the support of the European Society of Endocrinology, the Growth Hormone Research Society convened a Workshop, where 55 international key opinion leaders representing 10 professional societies were invited to participate. This consensus statement utilized: (1) a critical review paper produced before the Workshop, (2) five plenary talks, (3) evidence-based comments from four breakout groups, and (4) discussions during report-back sessions. Current evidence reviewed from the proceedings from the Workshop does not support an association between GH replacement and primary tumour or cancer recurrence. The effect of GH replacement on secondary neoplasia risk is minor compared to host- and tumour treatment-related factors. There is no evidence for an association between GH replacement and increased mortality from cancer amongst GH-deficient childhood cancer survivors. Patients with pituitary tumour or craniopharyngioma remnants receiving GH replacement do not need to be treated or monitored differently than those not receiving GH. GH replacement might be considered in GH-deficient adult cancer survivors in remission after careful individual risk/benefit analysis. In children with cancer predisposition syndromes, GH treatment is generally contraindicated but may be considered cautiously in select patients.

Increasing the yield potential of cultivars can contribute to solving the problems of climate change and the increase in world population. The objectives of this study were to study the variation of 60 wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes and to estimate the genetic progress in agronomic characters of varieties released in Mexico in the period from 1966 to 2015. The hypothesis was that the increases in yield of the genotypes are the result of the increase in the number of grains per surface unit and biomass. The study was established in six experimental stations of the National Institute of Agricultural Forestry and Livestock Research in the states of Guanajuato, Sonora, Chihuahua, Jalisco, Sinaloa, and Baja California, Mexico. Phenology, yield, and its components were measured. The treatment design was alpha lattice with two replications. The location and genotype that showed the highest yield (P ≤ 0.01) were Baja California and COLIBRI/MONARCA, with 7309 and 5966 kg·ha−1. The average genetic gain in yield was 23.8 kg·ha−1·year−1. The grain weight increase rate was 0.21 g per year. During the period, there was no genetic progress in plant height, heading days, harvest index, grains per square meter, and ears per square meter. The increases in yield of the recent lines are due to increases in ears per square meter, grains per square meter, and biomass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The continuity of farmers in farming under the impacts of climate change (CC), especially in developing nations, is still less investigated in literature. A survey was conducted among 220 farmers in selected rural communities in Ondo, Nigeria. The data were subjected to both descriptive and inferential statistical analyses. The results showed that male gender formed 90% of the respondents, 68% of the respondents cultivate up to 15 acres of farmland while 61% had experienced a decrease in their farmland sizes between 2000 and 2023 of which 47% (103 out of 220) claimed was due to erratic rainfall. Factor analysis identified and extracted three significant options for the sustainability of farmers' living in the CC era, namely, (i) adoption of soil and water conservation option (35.007%); (ii) abandonment of farming for another means of livelihood (15.052%) and (iii) reduction in the farmland size (11.774%). However, in view of the combined weights of options (i) and (iii) ([74.57% of the absolute value]) which explained farmers' preference to remain in farming, it, thus, implied that farmers will rather take options that will keep them in framing despite the impact of CC rather than abandoning it. The results are indications of the prevalence of CC and the policies that will enhance farming in CC era to be put in place to sustain the livelihood of farmers. Different tillage methods can have varying effects on soil properties and crop quality. Therefore, field experiments were conducted at the Teaching and Research Farm of Landmark University, located in Omu‐Aran, Kwara State. The objectives were to investigate the impacts of various tillage methods on soil characteristics and the growth, yield, mineral and proximate content of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.). Based on these objectives, it was hypothesized that soil properties, growth, yield, mineral and proximate contents of soybean would react differently to different tillage methods. Consequently, experiments were conducted to validate this hypothesis. The treatments were four tillage methods: manual clearing (MC), ploughing (P), ploughing plus harrowing (P + H) and manual ridging (MR), replicated three times in a randomized complete block design. Data on the initial soil properties (bulk density, particle size, pH, organic matter, N, P, K, Ca and Mg), along with the chemical properties of the soil on a per‐plot basis at the end of the experiment, were collected. Additionally, data on soil bulk density, porosity, moisture content and temperature were collected during the vegetative growth of the soybean. Soybean plant height and the number of branches were recorded at the midflowering stage, while grain yield and the number of pods were recorded at harvest. Soybean seeds were later analysed for their mineral and proximate contents using standard methods. P + H resulted in lower soil bulk density than other tillage methods and led to higher growth, yield, proximate and mineral contents of soybean. In MC, bulk density, soil moisture content, soil organic matter, N, P, K, Ca and Mg were significantly higher and temperature lower than in other tillage methods; yet, these advantages did not translate into increased yield and quality due to the higher bulk density. The growth, yield and quality of soybean were significantly influenced by soil bulk density rather than by soil chemical properties. Using the mean of the two sites, relative to MC, P and MR, P + H increased the grain yield of soybean by 41.3%, 24.4% and 13.7%, respectively. These findings underscore the importance of appropriate tillage practices for successful soybean cultivation in similar agroecological zones. For small‐scale operations, MR is suggested, while P + H is recommended for large‐scale soybean production in the studied area. Future studies could include additional variables, such as economic analysis, long‐term soil health impacts or the effects of tillage methods under varying climate conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
