Abstract

Intake of long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) benefits human and animal health. Our study aimed to analyze the long-chain n-3 PUFA content of two types of food and their effect on plasma and erythrocyte phospholipids of Belgian Shepherd dogs. A total of 10 dogs were fed commercial granulated food (Food 1), and another 10 were provided commercial Premium granulated food of high quality (Food 2). All the analyses were performed using gas-liquid chromatography. Our results showed that Food 1 contained more n-3 PUFA than Food 2, which was reflected in higher n-3 PUFA in plasma and erythrocyte phospholipids. Because long-chain n-3 PUFA in phospholipids are precursors for antioxidative molecules, further studies should investigate the effects of the analyzed commercial granulated food rich in n-3 on oxidative stress parameters in dogs.

3. Neuropsychological manifestations in rheumatic patients with chronic pain

Abstract

Introduction/Objective. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia, alongside chronic pain, often suffer from functional disabilities, as well as cognitive dysfunction. The objective of this study is to compare the intensity of pain, symptoms of depression, anxiety, and memory ability among rheumatic patients with chronic pain and to compare rheumatic patients to a control group of healthy participants. Methods. The cross-sectional study, which included 110 (82 female; 28 male) patients with chronic pain, was done at the Special Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases, Novi Sad. Depression was determined by Beck’s Depression Inventory, anxiety was diagnosed by Spielberger’s anxiety test, and memory was assessed by the Wechsler Memory Scale. Results. Mean pain intensity in patients with fibromyalgia were statistically significantly higher compared to patients with osteoarthritis and RA (p < 0.05). A statistically significant difference in the psychological status of patients (p < 0.001) and patient memory (p < 0.05) with chronic pain was established, compared to patients in the control group. There was no statistically significant difference in the psychological status of patients, patient memory level, and pain intensity in patients with positive fibromyalgia test results in comparison to rheumatic patients not meeting the criteria for fibromyalgia. Patients with osteoarthritis had a statistically significantly lower memory coefficient in comparison to patients with RA and fibromyalgia. Conclusion. In RA, osteoarthritis, and fibromyalgia patients, clinical factors such as pain, depression, and anxiety play an active role in cognitive impairment and should be considered when planning treatment.

5. Lactate content, total polyphenols and antioxidant activity of selected commercial yogurts from the Serbian market

Abstract

One of the most popular dairy products worldwide is yogurt, which flavor is highly influenced by lactic acid content. Yogurts with fruit preparations contain polyphenols, secondary plant metabolites with proven antioxidant properties. As there is no data regarding neither lactate nor polyphenol content in commercial yogurts in Serbia, this study aimed to determine lactate and polyphenol levels, as well as antioxidant activity in selected yogurts. A total of 15 plain and 5 fruit yogurts with strawberry preparations were analyzed. Lactate contents were from 0.83 to 1.33%. Three plain yogurts in plastic containers differed in lactate content. There was no difference in lactate content among the same plain yogurts packed in plastic and Tetra Pack containers. Fruit yogurts with strawberry preparations differed in total polyphenol content in the range from 6.84 to 29.11mg GAE/100 g and antioxidant properties were determined by reducing power test (from 0.22 to 0.79) and DPPH assay (from 28.13 to 87.23%), while there was no difference regarding lactate. Our results provided new information about the levels of lactate, total polyphenols and antioxidant activity of selected commercial yogurts available on the Serbian market.

6. Effect of hydrogen sulphide containing mineral water on experimental osteoporosis in rats

Abstract

Background/Aim: Sulphur mineral water is widely used in the treatment of musculoskeletal diseases. Hydrogen sulphide is an important regulator of bone metabolism and its application in the treatment of osteoporosis is intensively researched. The aim of this study was to analyse biochemical and histological effects of H2S containing mineral water of "Mlječanica" spring on ovariectomy-induced experimental osteoporosis in rats. Methods: In this experiment a 14-week-old Wistar female rats were used. The animals undergone bilateral ovariectomy (OVX groups) as an experimental model for oestrogen-deficient osteoporosis. After six weeks, animals were divided into control and the experimental group. Rats from the experimental group treated with H2S (SW group) containing mineral water ad libitum during five weeks. Biochemical parameters for monitoring sulphur water effects were concentration in serum of osteocalcin, alkaline phosphatase, calcium and phosphorus. Histological analyses of the left tibia coloured with haematoxylin-eosin were carried out. Results: Regarding the biochemical parameters, a statistically significant increase was observed in the OVX group for osteocalcin, alkaline phosphatase calcium and phosphorus compared to the sham-operated (CNT) group (p < 0.01). In SW + OVX, alkaline phosphatase was statistically significantly decreased (p < 0.01) and serum osteocalcin and phosphorus increased (p < 0.01). Calcium values were increased without significance. In the OVX + SW group, histological analyses showed numerous osteoblasts along the trabecular endosteum and the growth of young chondrocytes in the central bone zone and their migration to the peripheral parts. Conclusion: Drinking the H2S containing "Mlječanica" mineral water has led to decreased alkaline phosphatase, increased osteocalcin and phosphorus concentration in serum and stimulated the bone reparation in osteoporotic rats.

10. Factors influencing efficacy of complete decongestive treatment in patients with breast cancer-linked arm lymphoedema

Abstract

Background/Aim: The most recommended form of lymphoedema therapy is complete decongestive treatment (CDT). Efficacy of CDT in patients with arm lymphoedema related to malignant breast tumour has reported in many studies, but the predictive factors of outcome of this therapy have not been yet sufficiently investigated. The purpose of this research was to identify predictive factors of efficacy of CDT in patients with breast cancer-linked arm lymphoedema throughout the intensive phase of therapy. Methods: The prospective study included 51 patients with breast cancer-linked arm lymphoedema who were subjected to a 3-week program of CDT. Patients' clinical and demographic features, breast cancer treatment characteristics, lymphoedema and CDT characteristics were collected and assessed for their prognostic value. The influence of certain predictors on the degree of lymphoedema reduction was evaluated by multivariate linear regression analysis. Results: Mean age was 58.1 ± 8.0 (95 % CI: 55.8 - 60.3), median of BMI was 28.4 kg/m2 (95 % CI: 27.2 - 29.6). The average duration of lymphoedema was 36.5 ± 43.9 months (95 % CI: 24.1 - 48.8). The mean size of lymphoedema before CDT was 6.99 ± 5.36 %, and the mean degree of lymphoedema reduction was 63.7 ± 28.6 %. The mean compliance to bandages was 217.5 ± 97.8 hours (95 % CI: 190.0 - 245.0) and 7 (13.7 %) patients had a history of erysipelas of the ipsilateral arm. When observing each individual predictor, statistically most significant contribution showed the size of lymphoedema before the therapy (p < 0.001), then history of erysipelas (p < 0.01), and patients' age (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Size of lymphoedema before treatment is the most crucial prognostic factor of the efficacy of CDT in the patients with breast cancer-linked arm lymphoedema. The present study also identified history of erysipelas and patients age as independent predictors of the CDT efficacy.

12. The effects of fish-based and milk-based diets on liver tissue antioxidant enzymes and lipid peroxidation in female Wistar rats: A pilot study

Abstract

Background/Aim. Recently, there has been an increased interest in novel dietary antioxidants, including omega-3 fatty acids and bioactive proteins present in milk. The aim of this study was to examine potential antioxidant effects of four-weeks long fish-based and milk-based diets in female Wistar rats. Methods. Four-months old rats were divided into three groups receiving either: control diet, diet enriched with fish meal, or diet enriched with milk. The activities of antioxidant enzymes: glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), and concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) were determined in liver homogenates obtained at the end of the treatment period. Results. Statistically significant higher activities of GPx (3.52 ± 0.73 U/mg) and CAT (147.25 ± 15.93 U/mg) were detected in rats fed with fishbased meal in comparison with both the control (GPx: 1.93 ± 0.11 U/mg; CAT: 99.37 ± 10.03 U/mg) and the group fed with milk-based diet (GPx: 1.72 ± 0.52 U/mg; CAT: 104.18 ± 37.49 U/mg). Despite somewhat lower concentration of TBARS in the milk-treated group (0.88 ± 0.23 nmoL/mg), no significant differences were detected in comparison with other groups (the control group: 1.00 ± 0.08 nmoL/mg; the fish-based diet group: 1.13 ± 0.15 nmoL/mg). Conclusion. Diet enriched with fish could improve one’s oxidative status by enhancing activities of antioxidant enzymes in the liver tissue. On the contrary, we failed to obtain results suggesting that milk could serve as a source of dietary antioxidants. 15. Effects of Aronia melanocarpa juice on plasma and liver phospholipid fatty acid composition in Wistar rats

Abstract

A nutritional placebo-controlled study was performed in Wistar rats in order to investigate the effects of 5-weeks aronia juice consumption towards fatty acid (FA) composition of phospholipids in the plasma and liver, as well as plasma glucose (Glu) and cholesterol levels. The animals were divided into 3 groups of 8 animals each, and randomized to receive either the full polyphenol dose of Aronia melanocarpa juice (AMJ), 4 times less polyphenol dose (¼-AMJ) or polyphenol-lacking placebo beverage (PLB). Each group of 8 male adult Wistar rats received the liquid ad libitum. AMJ decreased the levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) (P < 0.05) vs. PLB. AMJ increased dihomo-γ-linoleic acid (DGLA, 20:3n-6) (P < 0.05) and decreased arachidonic acid content (AA, 20:4n-6) (P < 0.05) vs. PLB in liver phospholipids. AMJ significantly increased monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) levels both in the liver (P < 0.05) and plasma (P < 0.05). Both aronia juice doses elevated the levels of beneficial n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in the plasma and liver. There was a dose-dependent, significant increase (P < 0.001) in cis-vaccenic acid (VA, 18:1n-7) in phospholipids in the plasma and liver. Our results indicate favorable effects of aronia juice intake on lipid parameters in Wistar rats. These findings suggest the potential of aronia dietary intake in cardiometabolic diseases primary prevention strategies in the human population.

Abstract

Traditional foods play a major role in traditions of different cultures and regions for thousands of years while preparation methods of traditional foods are part of the folklore of a country or a region. This paper presents recipes and fatty acid profiles of selected commonly consumed traditional foods in Serbia. The obtained fatty acid composition data are used for making conclusions about meals which are commonly consumed in Serbia. Traditional Serbian dairy products, cheese and kajmak, contained 70% SFAs (mostly palmitic acid). Commonly used meal in Serbian cuisine, prebranac, also contained palmitic acid and oleic acid (38.67% and 35.58% respectively), while linoleic acid was presented with 17.34%, similarly to vanilice. Ajvar, frequently used as a salad, is rich in linoleic acid (49.12%) but less rich in palmitic acid. Trans fatty acids were found in very small amounts in all foods.

24. Potential health benefits of blueberry and raspberry pomace as functional food ingredients: Dietetic intervention study on healthy women volunteers

Abstract

The fruit juice industry generates pomace as a valuable by-product especially rich in polyphenols, dietary fibers, vitamins, minerals, and unsaturated fatty acids. In the cookies used in this study, 30% of the gluten-free flour was replaced with dried and ground blueberry and raspberry pomace, rich source of polyphenols, dietary fibers, linoleic and alpha-linolenic acid. In order to examine whether the addition of blueberry and raspberry pomace in cookie formulation can have beneficial effects on certain blood parameters and anthropometric measurements, the designed cookies were tested in 20 healthy, normally fed female subjects, aged 30–50 years (41.35 ± 8.58 years) over four-week dietetic intervention study. Significant changes in the composition of fatty acids serum phospholipids, decrease in LDL-cholesterol level (20.16%), increase in adiponectin level (25.52%) and decrease in ALT and AST values were observed, thus indicating that inclusion of cookies containing blueberry and raspberry dried and ground pomace to usual diet might have positive effects on certain cardiovascular risk factors and liver function indicators.

26. Lipid status in racehorses following physical activity of various intensity and duration

Abstract

The aim of this research was to determine the effects of physical activity on the lipid status in racehorses in a gallop race and a fortykilometre endurance ride. Two groups of healthy 3-5-year-old full-blooded racehorses were assessed. The first one ran a 2 400-m gallop race, which is considered a short-lasting, intense physical activity; lipid status was assessed prior to, and 48 and 72 h after the race. The second group ran a fortykilometre endurance ride, which is a long-lasting moderate physical activity; the lipid status was assessed immediately before, soon after and 48, 72, 96, 120 and 144 h after finishing the race. In intense physical activity the parameters of lipid status (total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, free cholesterol and triglycerides) remained stable at all times assessed in comparison with basal concentrations (p>0.05). Following the long-lasting moderate physical activity a slight, although statistically insignificant (p>0.05), increase in the concentrations of total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, free cholesterol and LDL cholesterol was noticed immediately after the endurance ride in comparison to the values before the ride. Abstract

BACKGROUND: “VITALPLANT” medicinal plant mixture, aimed at body weight regulation and metabolism enhancement was formulated in order to be incorporated as an ingredient in functional food formulations on the basis of known biological activity of the alder buckthorn bark, peppermint, caraway and parsley. METHODOLOGY: The body weight-lowering potential, hypolipidemic effects and antioxidant activity of “Vitalplant” mixture were examined on five groups of male Wistar rats on different food regimes for 14 weeks. RESULTS: “Vitalplant” mixture supplementation caused an increase in food intake, but induced a decrease in body weight gain. The lipid status and atherogenic index (AI) were significantly improved in “Vitalplant” mixture supplemented hyperlipidemic (HF) groups in comparison to HF group. “Vitalplant” mixture was able to influence the activity of antioxidant enzymes and to protect erythrocytes of the rats fed the HF diet from oxidative damage, which was indicated by significantly lower malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in “Vitalplant”- HF groups in comparison to the HF group. CONCLUSION: “Vitalplant” mixture seemed to be beneficial for the reduction of body weight and improvement of antioxidant status of the erythrocytes, and its antihyperlipidemic property was highly active for enhancing the profile of plasma lipids in rats.

32. Bakterije kao paraziti koštičavih voćaka i badema na području Crne Gore

Abstract

Proizvodnja koštičavog voća i badema ekonomski je važna i obezbjeđuje značajne prihode proizvođačima širom svijeta. U Crnoj Gori karakteriše je intenzivna i poluintenzivna proizvodnja, dok je gajenje badema uglavnom namijenjeno za potrebe domaćinstva. Proizvodnja koštičavog voća i badema u Crnoj Gori često je ugrožena različitim fitopatogenim bakterijama, naročito kada povoljni klimatski uslovi pogoduju infekciji i širenju bolesti. Tokom dvogodišnjeg nadzora (2017-2018), prikupljeni su simptomatični uzorci raznih organa koštičavih voćaka i badema, iz različitih lokaliteta širom Crne Gore. Iz oboljelog tkiva, izolovano je 68 sojeva fitopatogenih bakterija koji su proučeni primjenom klasičnih i savremenih metoda. Svi proučavani sojevi su Gram negativni, stvaraju katalazu, ali ne i oksidazu, imaju oksidativan metabolizam glukoze i prouzrokuju hipersenzitivnu reakciju lista duvana i muškatle. Na osnovu patogenih, morfoloških, biohemijsko-fizioloških i molekularnih odlika, izolovani sojevi svrstani su u dva roda: Xanthomonas i Pseudomonas. Patogenost proučavanih sojeva potvrđena je reprodukcijom simptoma na listovima, plodovima i mladarima odgovarajućih biljaka domaćina. Na osnovu morfoloških, patogenih, biohemijsko-fizioloških i molekularnih karakteristika, 29 sojeva je svrstano u rod Pseudomonas. Proučavani sojevi stvaraju zeleni fluorescentni pigment na Kingovoj podlozi B i male, okrugle, sjajne, sivkasto-bjeličaste kolonije na podlozi od hranljivog agara. Uočena je varijabilnost u pogledu stvaranja levana i vitalnosti na hranljivoj podlozi obogaćenoj saharozom (NAS), kao i sposobnosti stvaranja čestica leda. Rezultati GATTa testova nisu dovoljni i pouzdani za diferencijaciju P. syringae sojeva do ili ispod nivoa patogenog varijeteta. Kod 25 proučavanih sojeva detektovan je syrB gen koji kodira sintezu siringomicina. Rezultati Rep-PCR primjenom BOX prajmera, pokazali su visok genetički diverzitet među proučavanim sojevima Pseudomonas sp. Analiza multilokusnih sekvenci (MLSA) je izvedena za 28 proučavanih sojeva, pri čemu su umnožene nukleotidne sekvence četiri konstitutivna gena: gapA, gltA, gyrB i rpoD. Rezultati MLSA pokazuju da 27 proučavanih sojeva pripada genomskoj vrsti 1, P. syringae sensu stricto, raspoređenih u filogrupi 2. Međutim, sojevi iz iste filogrupe 2, nisu grupisani u jedan monofiletski klaster. Izuzetak je predstavljao soj K6 izolovan iz kajsije, koji pripada genomskoj vrsti 2, filogrupi 3. Kod četiri soja kod kojih nije detektovan gen za sintezu siringomicina, analiziran je 16S rRNK gen. Poređenjem dobijenih sekvenci sa sekvencama u NCBI bazi, utvrđeno je da ti sojevi ipak pripadaju bakteriji Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae. Na osnovu dobijenih rezultata, 29 sojeva je identifikovano kao Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae. Na osnovu dobijenih rezultata morfoloških, patogenih, biohemijskih i molekularnih testova, 38 sojeva je identifikovano kao Xanthomonas arboricola pv. pruni. Na podlozi od kvaščevog ekstrakta, glukoze i kalcijum karbonata (YDC) formirali su žute, ispupčene i sluzaste kolonije. Svi proučavani sojevi hidrolizuju eskulin i ne razvijaju se pri 37°C. Od svih proučavanih sojeva četiri soja hidrolizuju skrob i dva soja ne hidrolizuju želatin. Rezultati Rep-PCR korišćenjem BOX prajmera, ukazali su na homogenost populacije Xanthomonas arboricola pv. pruni i nizak genetički diverzitet proučavanih sojeva ovog patovara. Korišćenjem specifičnih prajmera XapY17- F/XapY17-R u reakciji lančanog umnožavanja fragmenata DNK, umnožen je fragment veličine 943 bp kod 37 proučavanih sojeva. Sekvencionom analizom konstitutivnog gyrB gena određena je genotipska srodnost 10 reprezentativnih sojeva porijeklom iz Crne Gore sa referentnim sojevima... Stone fruit and almond production are economically important and provide considerable incomes for the growers worldwide. In Montenegro this production is characterized as intensive and semi-intensive, while almond production is mainly intended for household consumption. The Montenegro stone fruit and almond production is often compromised by different phytopathogenic bacteria, especially when environmental conditions favour infection and spread of the disease. During the two year survey (2017-2018), symptomatic samples of plant material of stone fruits and almond from different geographical locations in Montenegro were collected. From the diseased tissue, 68 bacterial strains were isolated, and studied using conventional and modern methods. All studied strains were Gram-negative, catalase positive, oxidase negative, obligate aerobic, and caused hypersensitive reaction of tobacco and geranium leaves. Based on pathogenic, morphological, biochemical-physiological and molecular characteristics, isolated strains were classified into two genera: Xanthomonas i Pseudomonas. Pathogenicity of tested strains was confirmed by reproducing the simptoms on leaves, fruits and twigs of their corresponding host plants. Based on morphological, pathogenic, biochemical and molecular characteristics, 29 strains were differentiated in the genus Pseudomonas. Investigated strains produced fluorescent pigment on King's medium B and small, circular, glossy, greyish-whitish colonies on nutrient agar. The strains differed in levan production, vitality on nutrient sucrose agar (NSA) and ice nucleation activity. Results of GATTa tests were not sufficient and reliable for differentiating P. syringae strains at or below the pathovar level. The syrB gene coding for syringomycin synthesis, was detected in 25 of tested strains. The results of Rep-PCR using BOX primer, revealed high genetic diversity of the Pseudomonas strains isolated from stone fruits and almond in Montenegro. Multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) was performed for 28 strains, using four housekeeping genes: gapA, gltA, gyrB and rpoD. The results of MLSA showed that 27 studied strains belonged to the genomic species 1, P. syringae sensu stricto, coresponding to P. syringae phylogroup 2. However, strains from the same phylogroup 2 did not form a monophyletic cluster. The exception was the strain K6 isolated from apricot, which belonged to genomic species 2, phylogroup 3. The 16S rRNA gene was analyzed for four strains which did not have a gene for syringomycin synthesis. The comparison of the obtained sequences with those previously deposited in the NCBI database showed that these strains belong to Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae. Based on the obtained results, 29 strains were identified as Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae. A total of 38 strains were identified as Xanthomonas arboricola pv. pruni based on their morphological, pathogenic, biochemical and molecular characteristics. Colonies on yeast extractdextrose- CaCO3 agar medium (YDC) were yellow, convex and mucoid. All strains hydrolyzed esculin and didn’t grow at 37°C. Out of all, four strains hydrolyzed starch and two strains didn’t hydrolyze gelatin. The results of Rep-PCR using BOX primer, indicated population homogeneity of our Xanthomonas arboricola pv. pruni strains and low genetic diversity among them. PCR analysis, with a pair of primers XapY17-F/ XapY17-R, produced a single characteristic band of 943 bp in 37 strains. Sequence analysis of housekeeping gyrB gene revealed genotypic relatedness of ten representative strains originating from Montenegro with referent Xanthomonas arboricola pv. pruni strains...

Abstract

Purpose: Colorectal cancer represents the second most common type of cancer in Serbia. Alteration of lipid metabolism begins early, and can represent a central hallmark in cancer evolution. Fatty acids have various important functions as building components of cell membranes, as signaling molecules in immune responses and also manage the general cancer signaling network. The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference of various fatty acids content between colorectal cancer and adjacent healthy intestinal tissue in adult and aged patients of both sexes. Methods: 52 subjects participated in this study. Healthy colon mucosa and tumor tissue samples were obtained from patients previously diagnosed with colorectal carcinoma. Simplified method of Berstad et al was used for direct transesterification of total lipids in tumor and healthy mucosa tissue samples and separations of the methyl esters was carried out using a gas chromatograph equipped with a split/ splitless injector and a flame ionization detector. Results: 18 0, 18 1 n7, 20 3, 20 4, 20 5, 22 4, 22 5 22 6, SFA, PUFA, n6, n3 and AA/EPA were significantly higher in tumor tissue. On the other hand, 18 1 n9, 18 2, 18 3 n3, MUFA, n6/ n3 were significantly higher in healthy tissue. Conclusions: Saturation index (SI) could be a valuable tool to delineate robust immune response and worse prognosis in patients with colorectal cancer. Our study demonstrated significant differences in fatty acid profiles between tumor tissue and healthy mucosa. Parameters, such as gender, age, stage and mucinous component didn't influence altered fatty acid content.

36. Reshaping approaches of architectural heritage devastated through bombing: case study of Generalštab, Belgrade

Abstract

The main objective of the research is to demonstrate the possible approaches to treatment of architectural heritage largely destroyed by bombardment, particularly to give an alternative method in reconstruction of bombarded urban landmarks, in regards to negative emotional attachment (detachment or alienation). The background research is based on the essential theories and studies connected to the treatment of bombarded places and war architecture, architecture of ruins, memory, identity, and emotional attachment, refecting on reconstruction, conservation, and revitalisation methods. The hypothesis of the research is that the emotional attachment defnes place identity. The paper focuses on the case study of the bombarded urban landmark of Generalštab complex in Belgrade. Using a questionnaire which involved 235 respondents, a relationship was established between the citizens of Belgrade and the Generalštab complex. The questionnaire gathered information on (1) recognisability, values, and signifcance, (2) emotional connection, and (3) citizens’ attitudes to possible approaches on the treatment of the Generalštab in the future. Finally, as a result of comprehensive analysis, the paper proposes one of the potential architectural approaches towards Generalštab complex, which is in line with the principles of the profession, but also the citizens’ attitudes and the needs of the City of Belgrade. Overall, the research aims to show the complexity of the observed topics, as well as an attempt to raise and develop the awareness about the importance and value of the bombarded architectural heritage.

Abstract

Plant production in Montenegro is becoming more important considering limited availability of land, climatic conditions and economic opportunities. The production profitability can be compromised by various plant pathogenic microorganisms such as fungi, bacteria, phytoplasmas, and viruses. Bacterial and phytoplasma incited diseases are the most devastating considering their spread and difficulty to control. In Montenegro, bacterial diseases of plants have not been sufficiently studied. However, several economically important bacteria were reported in the past. Erwinia amylovora, the causal agent of fire blight of pome fruits is widespread in the continental part of the country, causing significant damage and limiting production of pome fruits and susceptible ornamental plants. Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae, the causal agent of citrus blast of mandarin, almost every year, depending on climatic conditions, causes the production losses along Montenegrian coast. Pseudomonas syringae, commonly known as a pathogen of stone fruits, was just studied as a pathogen of sour cherries. The presence of Xanthomonas arboricola pv. pruni on almond trees indicate the need to determine its possible presence in other host plants (peach, nectarine, plum, apricot). Agrobacterium tumefaciens was reported as causal agent of crown gall disease of grapevine. Considering vegetable bacterial diseases, the presence of Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris, the causal agent of black rot and vascular bacterial disease, was confirmed on crucifers. On ornamental plants, Pseudomonas savastanoi pv. nerii was confirmed on oleander, while calla soft rot was caused by Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum. Biljna proizvodnja u Crnoj Gori dobija sve veći značaj s obzirom na zemljišne, klimatske i ekonomske prilike. Rentabilnost biljne proizvodnje mogu ugroziti različiti patogeni mikroorganizmi kao što su: gljive, bakterije, fitoplazme i virusi. Po značaju, rasprostranjenosti, ali i nemogućnosti uspješne kontrole, izdvajaju se oboljenja bakteriozne i fitoplazmozne prirode. U Crnoj Gori bakterioze biljaka još uvijek nisu dovoljno proučene. Među saopštenjima o pojavi biljnih oboljenja značajnijeg intenziteta prikazano je i nekoliko ekonomski veoma značajnih bakterija. Erwinia amylovora, prouzrokovao bakteriozne plamenjače jabučastih voćaka, široko je rasprostranjena u kontinentalnom dijelu Crne Gore, gde prouzrokuje značajne štete i predstavlja ozbiljnu prijetnju uspešnom gajenju jabučastih voćaka i osjetljivih ukrasnih biljka. Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae, prouzrokovao bakteriozne paleži lišća mandarine, gotovo svake godine, u zavisnosti od klimatskih prilika, prouzrokuje štete na Crnogorskom primorju. Pseudomonas syringae, kao opštepoznat patogen koštičavih voćaka, proučen je samo kao patogen višnje. Utvrđeno prisustvo patogena Xanthomonas arboricola pv. pruni na bademu, nameće potrebu da se utvrdi eventualno prisustvo patogena i u drugim lokalitetima kao i na drugim domaćinima (breskva, nektarina, šljiva, kajsija). Agrobacterium tumefaciens prouzrokuje bakteriozni rak vinove loze. Od povrtarskih biljaka, na kupusnjačama je utvrđeno prisustvo Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris prouzrokovača crne truleži i sudovne bakterioze kupusnjača. Na ukrasnom bilju, kao patogen oleandera utvrđen je Pseudomonas savastanoi pv. nerii prouzrokovao raka oleandera, dok bakterioznu vlažnu trulež kale prouzrokuje Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum.

42. Fatty acid profiles and antioxidant properties of raw and dried walnuts

Abstract

Background: Walnuts consumption produces beneficial effects on human health. Health-promoting benefits are dedicated to its desirable fatty acid profile and high content of antioxidants. Heat treatment of walnuts may alter their fatty acid composition and antioxidant capacity. Aim: In general the aim of this work was to compare fatty acids profiles and antioxidative properties of raw and dried walnuts at 60 °C for 12 hours. Methodology and results: FA profiles were analyzed using gas chromatography. Antioxidative capacities of walnut samples were determined by DPPH and ABTS tests. There were no significant differences in fatty acid profiles comparing dried and raw walnuts. The most abundant fatty acid was linoleic with mean content of 61.38 ± 1.11% in raw and 62.40 ± 0.99% in dried walnuts. Walnuts oil contained 10.64 ± 0.46% and 10.49 ± 0.81% of a-linolenic acid (ALA) in raw and dried walnuts, respectively. Antioxidative capacity of methanolic extracts showed no difference comparing raw and dried walnut by DPPH and ABTS test. Heat treatment at 60 °C for 12h induced no change in fatty acid profiles of walnuts and led to minor decrease in antioxidative capacity measured only by ABTS test. Conclusion: We suggest that drying process in our experiment did not decreased nutritional capacity which is mostly mediated by conservation of fatty acids content in walnuts., Dijetarni unos oraha povezuje se sa brojnim pozitivnim efektima na zdravlje. Svoj efekat na zdravlje orasi ostvaruju zahvaljujući povoljnom masnokiselinskom sastavu i visokom sadržaju antioksidanasa. Zagrevanje oraha moglo bi dovesti do promena u masnokiselinskom sastavu i uticati na antioksidativni kapacitet. Cilj ovog rada bio je da se uporede masnokiselinski profili i antioksidativni status svežih i oraha sušenih na 60 °C u trajanju od 12 sati. Masnokiselinski sastav analiziran je gasnom hromatografijom. Antioksidativni kapaciteti uzoraka oraha odreðivani su DPPH i ABTS testovima. Utvrðeno je da nije bilo promena u masnokiselinskim profilima posle sušenja oraha na 60 °C u trajanju od 12 sati. Najzastupljenija masna kiselina bila je linolna sa sadržajem od 61.38 ± 1.11% u sirovim i 62.40 ± 0.99% kod sušenih oraha. Ulje oraha sadržalo je 10.64 ± 0.46% i 10.49 ± 0.81% a-linolenske kiseline (ALA) u svežim i sušenim orasima, respektivno. DPPH testom nije utvrđeno da postoje razlike u antioksidativnom potencijalu metanolnih ekstrakata oraha sušenih u odnosu na sveže kao ni sa ABTS testom. Naš eksperimet je pokazao da proces sušenja oraha nije smanjio njihov nutritivni kapacitet što je verovatno posredovano očuvanjem sadržaja masnih kiselina.

Abstract

Zadatak ovog diplomskog rada bio je istražiti karakteristike zaštitne odjeće za vatrogasce u uvjetima uporabe. U teoretskom dijelu diplomskog rada napravljena je detaljna razrada vrsta zaštitne odjeće, nabrojane su norme za zaštitnu odjeću, opisane su ozljede koje nastaju tijekom izlaganja toplini i plamenu, odjeća za zaštitu od topline i plamena, vatrogasna odjeća, materijali i principi izrade takve odjeće, te testiranje, njega i održavanje sustava namijenjenih zaštiti od topline. Opisana je i interventna zaštitna odjeća, te inteligentna vatrogasna odjeća. U okviru eksperimentalnog dijela ovog diplomskog rada provedena je anketa o korištenju vatrogasne odjeće u profesionalnim i dobrovoljnim vatrogasnim postrojbama u Republici Hrvatskoj. Istraživanje je provedeno na 378 ispitanika, a anketirani su profesionalni i dobrovoljni vatrogasci. Anketiranje je provedeno putem web ankete. Svrha istraživanja bila je prikupiti podatke o vrsti interventne vatrogasne odjeće, načinu korištenja i održavanja, te zadovoljstvu vatrogasaca o interventnoj vatrogasnoj odjeći koju nose. Anketom je utvrđeno da su vatrogasci zadovoljni vatrogasnom odjećom koju nose.

Abstract

In a number of studies, a static magnetic field was observed to positively influence the growing process of various plants; however, the effect has not yet been related to possible structural changes. We investigate if the static magnetic field that improves germination of wheat also alters wheat's near-infrared spectrum. Two groups of seeds were exposed to 340mT for 16h cumulatively. The first group was exposed 8 days for 2h per day, while the second group was exposed 4h per day for 4 consecutive days. One half of each of the exposed seed groups as well as of the unexposed control groups was sown, and the other half was used for mid-infrared spectra measurements. The sown seeds were monitored for 3 weeks after sowing. Germination of the groups exposed to the magnetic field was faster compared to corresponding non-exposed groups that were grown under the same conditions. The magnetic field exposure caused the enhancement of one OH peak at 3,369cm(-1) and two CO peaks at 1,662cm(-1) and 1,740cm(-1) in the mid-infrared spectrum. 50. Consumption of pomegranate juice decreases blood lipid peroxidation and levels of arachidonic acid in women with metabolic syndrome

Abstract

BACKGROUNDPomegranate juice is a rich source of polyphenols and is thus a promising dietary antioxidant with numerous health-promoting effects. These include a beneficial impact on cardiovascular health that could be partly attributed to the effects of polyphenols on lipid metabolism. The aim of this study was to investigate whether consumption of pomegranate juice for 6 weeks could modify lipid peroxidation and phospholipid fatty acid composition of plasma and erythrocytes in subjects with metabolic syndrome. Twenty-three women, aged 40-60 years, were enrolled and randomly assigned into two groups: the intervention group, in which each participant consumed 300 mL of juice per day for 6 weeks; and a control group. RESULTSA statistically significant decrease in the relative amount of arachidonic acid (P lt 0.05) and an increase in the relative amount of saturated fatty acids (P lt 0.05) were observed in the intervention group at the end of the consumption period. In addition, pomegranate juice significantly increased the relative amount of total mono-unsaturated fatty acids (P lt 0.05), and significantly decreased the levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances in erythrocytes (P lt 0.05). The status of blood lipids and the values for blood pressure were not changed during the study. CONCLUSIONThe results obtained indicate a positive impact of the consumption of pomegranate juice on lipid peroxidation and fatty acid status in subjects with metabolic syndrome and suggest potential anti-inflammatory and cardio-protective effects.
