Abstract

The traditional mathematical model for an impartial combinatorial game is defined recursively as a set of the options of the game, where the options are games themselves. We propose a model called gamegraph, together with its generalization rulegraph, based on the natural description of a game as a digraph where the vertices are positions and the arrows represent possible moves. Such digraphs form a category where the morphisms are option preserving maps. We study several versions of this category. Our development includes congruence relations, quotients, and isomorphism theorems and is analogous to the corresponding notions in universal algebra. The quotient by the maximum congruence relation produces an object that is essentially equivalent to the traditional model. After the development of the general theory, we count the number of non-isomorphic gamegraphs and rulegraphs by formal birthday and the number of positions., Comment: 23 pages, 19 figures

Abstract

Background/Aim. Early diagnosis of amelanotic cutaneous melanoma metastases (ACMM) represents a great challenge and is essential for determining the stage, treatment, and prognosis of the disease. The aim of the study was to evaluate the vascular structures and their arrangement and frequency in ACMM. Methods. The study was conducted as a prospective, descriptive, multicenter study of pathohistologically confirmed ACMM. Results. The study included a total of 52 ACMM from 17 patients (8 men and 9 women, with an age range of 32–91 years, median 63.12 years) with a previous history of primary melanoma. The most prevalent were elevated ACMM – 39 (75.0%) lesions, while 13 (25.0%) ACMM were flat. Linear irregular blood vessels were statistically significantly more often associated with elevated ACMM, compared to flat ACMM (92.3% vs. 50.0%, p < 0.001). Dotted blood vessels were statistically significantly more frequent in flat ACMM, compared to elevated ACMM (76.9% vs. 28.2%, p = 0.003). Diffuse distribution of blood vessels was the most prevalent, with 92.3% of flat ACMM and 76.9% of elevated ACMM (p = 0.416). Peripheral arrangement of blood vessels was detected in 15.4% of elevated A CMM and 7.7% of flat ACMM (p = 0.815). The central arrangement of blood vessels was seen in 2.6%, while the cluster (segmental) schedule was present in 5.1% of elevated ACMM. The monomorphic vascular pattern was the predominant pattern in 84.6% of flat ACMM and 61.5% of elevated ACMM (p = 0.232). Conclusion. Our study supports the finding that linear irregular blood vessels are more commonly associated with elevated ACMM, while the dotted ones are dominant in flat ACMM.

Abstract

Wild beast spectacles (venationes) in Roman amphitheatres required a complex network of organization – from wildlife capturing and transport to their maintenance, displays in the arena, and processing their corpses after death. Numerous depictions in ancient texts and iconography are related to venationes and they give some insight into the supply and management of wildlife used in amphitheatre games. However, these are considered to be highly exaggerated, and they are usually not concerned with the vast majority of provincial amphitheatres, but only to spectacles held in just a few urban centres (e.g. Rome). Archaeozoological data from areas of several Roman provincial amphitheatres have given additional insights into the usage of wild beasts in arena shows throughout the Empire. One of the largest amphitheatre faunal collections originates from the military amphitheatre of Viminacium – the post of the 7th Claudia Legion, and capital of the province of Moesia Superior. Previous studies on wildlife remains from Viminacium amphitheatre indicated the usage of locally available beasts (brown bears, wild boars and red deer), as well as exotics (big cats). This paper will discuss the supply and management of those beasts through the combination of archaeozoological and genetic evidence. More precisely it will examine their origin via genetic evidence, as well as the way of their use in the arena by examination of skeletal trauma.

Abstract

Advances in paleogenomic research have provided new information about domesticated animals, but we still know little about the history of cats. Until now, only one subspecies, the Near Eastern wildcat (Felis silvestris lybica), was known to have been domesticated. The domestication areas were assumed to be the Near East and Egypt. From this region, cats spread to the Mediterranean and beyond. It has been accepted that the Roman legions played the primary role in the expansion of cats through northern Europe. However, we found that cats that carried mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplotypes of wildcats from the Near East were present in Central Europe as early as the Neolithic, well before Roman times, and may have been associated with Neolithic expansion. Our new results reveal the presence of the mtDNA haplotypes of the Near Eastern wildcats in Poland even in the pre-Neolithic period. This may suggest that the Near Eastern wildcats could have spread across Europe independently of agricultural expansion. Consequently, the natural range of Near Eastern wildcats may have been much broader than previously assumed. To understand how and when domestic cats appeared in Central Europe, we performed a target enrichment of ca. 57,000 genomic SNPs. We believe that this will allow us to definitively determine whether the appearance of the Near Eastern wildcat mtDNA in Central Europe was a natural admixture between the two subspecies or whether it was a human-induced dispersal of tame/domestic cats. Abstract

We present a description of an almost complete skeleton of the forest rhino (Stephanorhinus kirchbergensis) found near Gorzów Wielkopolski (Northwest Poland) in its geological and palaeoenvironmental context. While finds of bones and teeth are common, the importance of this find resides in, that it is the most complete specimen of this species, almost perfectly preserved in a well-studied and dated stratigraphic and sedimentological context, along with other fossil fauna and flora. The OSL dates of glaciofluvial sediments sandwiching skeleton-bearing horizons indicate a Middle Eemian age of the Pleistocene paleolake land. This warm climate is also indicated by the results of sedimentological, geochemical, paleobotanical, and isotopic analyses. The rhino skeleton was deposited in a shallow area near the lake’s littoral zone. Bite marks of a large predator (cave hyena) were recognized on the rhino’s pelvis, which, due to their location, were probably created post-mortem. With an estimated height of 1.82 m at the withers, this was a large adult Stephanorhinus kirchbergensis. The results of osteometric analyses indicate that we are dealing with one of the largest known individuals of this species. Although it suffered from a pathologically deformed spine, the individual died at a relatively old age.

Abstract

This paper is based on determining the level of the antioxidant activity of beer, to which sensory acceptable amounts of selected extracts of medicinal plants were added, with the aim of obtaining a beer with increased functional and new sensory features. For purposes of this study a commercial lager beer type Pils and extracts of herbal drugs: Melissae folium, Thymi herba, Juniperi fructus, Urticae radix and Lupuli strobuli, were used. Total phenols were analyzed by the method of Folin-Ciocalteu, and the antioxidant activity of samples using FRAP and DPPH test. Sensory evaluation of beer was conducted on 80 subjects, using a nine levels hedonic scale. The results showed that the content of total phenols was the highest in the beer which thyme, juniper and lemon balm were added to (384.22, 365.38 and 363.08 mg GAE/L, respectively), representing the increase of 37.09, 30.36 and 29.55% (respectively) compared to the commercial lager beer. Values of antioxidant activity were correlated with the content of total phenols. The extract of lemon balm blended in the best manner with the baseline, commercial lager beer in terms of sensory acceptability. New beer, enriched with lemon balm, had a pleasant, appealing and harmonious flavor and aroma.

Abstract

The narrow-headed vole, collared lemming and common vole were the most abundant small mammal species across the Eurasian Late Pleistocene steppe-tundra environment. Previous ancient DNA studies of the collared lemming and common vole have revealed dynamic population histories shaped by climatic fluctuations. To investigate the extent to which species with similar adaptations share common evolutionary histories, we generated a dataset comprised the mitochondrial genomes of 139 ancient and 6 modern narrow-headed voles from several sites across Europe and northwestern Asia covering approximately the last 100 thousand years (kyr). We inferred Bayesian time-aware phylogenies using 11 radiocarbon-dated samples to calibrate the molecular clock. Divergence of the main mtDNA lineages across the three species occurred during marine isotope stages (MIS) 7 and MIS 5, suggesting a common response of species adapted to open habitat during interglacials. We identified several time-structured mtDNA lineages in European narrow-headed vole, suggesting lineage turnover. The timing of some of these turnovers was synchronous across the three species, allowing us to identify the main drivers of the Late Pleistocene dynamics of steppe- and cold-adapted species.

Abstract

Introduction/Aim. Lentigo maligna (LM) represents an in situ melanoma that develops on chronically photo-damaged skin. Clinical diagnosis of LM is often difficult, even for experienced dermatologists. The aim of the study was to analyze the clinical and dermoscopic features of patients with pathohistologically verified lentigo maligna (LM) and to determine a possible influence of anatomical topography, age and gender in the dermoscopic features of LM. Patients and methods. This retrospective study included 32 patients with 32 LM changes in total, diagnosed between 2017 and 2020. Clinical data recorded from each patient included the following: demographic features (age, gender), anatomic localization (facial or extrafacial) and clinical size (< 10 mm or > 10 mm). Facial area was subdivided into eight topographical sites, while extrafacial localization involved any location outside the face region. All dermoscopic images were analyzed for the presence of dermoscopic features previously described as LM. Results. In the total of 32 patients, there were 19 males and 13 females. The patients' age ranged from 34 to 80 years (median age 60.1 ± 10.4 years). Significant female predominance was observed for localization on the cheeks (p = 0.018). Localization on the nose was significantly associated with patients older than 65 (p = 0.039). The most frequent dermoscopic features were asymmetric pigmented follicular openings in 23 (71.9%) cases, gray color in 22 (68.8%) and pigmented rhomboidal structures in 15 (46.9%) cases. In relation to age and specific dermoscopic features, gray color (p = 0.035) and white scar-like areas (p = 0.012) were significantly higher in patients older than 65, while pigmented rhomboidal structures (p = 0.041) were significantly associated with younger patients. Conclusion. The observed differences in the frequency of clinical and dermoscopic features of LM have significant importance in everyday clinical practice and can assist clinicians in the early diagnosis of this malignant tumor. A recent study from Central Europe has changed our perception of the cat’s domestication history. The authors discuss how this has led to the development of an interdisciplinary project combining palaeogenetics, zooarchaeology and radiocarbon dating, with the aim of providing insight into the domestic cat’s expansion beyond the Mediterranean.

Abstract

Aim: Many species experienced population turnover and local extinction during the Late Pleistocene. In the case of megafauna, it remains challenging to disentangle climate change and the activities of Palaeolithic hunter‐gatherers as the main cause. In contrast, the impact of humans on rodent populations is likely to be negligible. This study investigated which climatic and/or environmental factors affect the population dynamics of the common vole. This temperate rodent is widespread across Europe and was one of the most abundant small mammal species throughout the Late Pleistocene. Location: Europe. Taxon: Common vole (Microtus arvalis). Methods: We generated a dataset comprised of 4.2 kb long fragment of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from 148 ancient and 51 modern specimens sampled from multiple localities across Europe and covering the last 60 thousand years (ka). We used Bayesian inference to reconstruct their phylogenetic relationships and to estimate the age of the specimens that were not directly dated. Results: We estimated the time to the most recent common ancestor of all last glacial and extant common vole lineages to be 90 ka ago and the divergence of the main mtDNA lineages present in extant populations to between 55 and 40 ka ago, which is earlier than most previous estimates. We detected several lineage turnovers in Europe during the period of high climate variability at the end of Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS 3; 57–29 ka ago) in addition to those found previously around the Pleistocene/Holocene transition. In contrast, data from the Western Carpathians suggest continuity throughout the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) even at high latitudes. Main Conclusions: The main factor affecting the common vole populations during the last glacial period was the decrease in open habitat during the interstadials, whereas climate deterioration during the LGM had little impact on population dynamics. Abstract

Melanonychia refers to a brown or black coloration of the nail plate caused by numerous factors. Regarding the arrangement of pigmentation, we can differentiate between total melanonychia, when pigmentation involves the whole nail plate, or transverse or longitudinal melanonychia, when pigmentation involves the nail in a form of transverse or longitudinal band of pigmentation, respectively. Since longitudinal melanonychia can be a sign of numerous benign and malignant lesions, it often poses a diagnostic challenge for a dermatologist. Herein, we report a case of a 13-year-old girl who developed longitudinal melanonychia on multiple nails after receiving a therapy with azithromycin.
