A model of the non-concentric spherical core-shell quantum dot under the influence of an externally applied electric field was proposed. It was established that the energy spectrum of both the electron and the hole depends on the intensity of the electric field as well as on the specific location of the core within the quantum dot. The phenomenon of energy level splitting and degeneration was analyzed in detail. We report a brief overview ofa number of results on a type of pairing state symmetry in cuprates HTSC from a current literature. The results of recent high-precision measurements of near-nodal d-type gap functions by a modern laser-based ARPES method or by a c-axis twisted Josephson junction for hole-doped Bi-2212 system are presented. Recent experimental evidence in favor of d-type pairing symmetry, with a special nonmonotonic functional form, for electron-doped cuprate NdCeCuO is discussed. A new essential results on the identification of dx^2-y^2 symmetry of superconducting order parameter for parent high-Tc cuprate structure, electron-doped infinite layer SrLaCuO system, by the phase sensitive tests is described. A complex of the data presented indicates a vital role of d-wave pairing symmetry, in the special dx^2-y^2 form for high-temperature conductivity in cuprate systems., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures

The current-voltage (I-V) properties along the c axis on Nd2-xCexCuO4 /SrTiO3 epitaxial films with x = 0.145, 0.15 were investigated. For all the samples it has been established that the I-V characteristics exhibit several resistive branches, which correspond to the resistive states of individual Josephson junctions. The results confirm the idea of a tunneling mechanism between the CuO2 layers (superconductor - insulator - superconductor junction) for the investigated Nd2-xCexCuO4 compound. The I-V dependence of this compound with x = 0.15 points out on the nonmonotonic nature of the d-wave or anisotropic s-wave symmetry order parameter associated with the coexistence of superconductivity and antiferromagnetic fluctuations., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

The work describes a system for converting VLBI observation data using the algorithms of coherent dedispersion and compensation of two-bit signal sampling. Coherent dedispersion is important for processing pulsar observations to obtain the best temporal resolution, while correction for signal sampling makes it possible to get rid of a number of parasitic effects that interfere with the analysis of the diffraction pattern of pulsars. A pipeline has been established that uses the developed converter and the ASC Software Correlator, which will allow reprocessing all archived data of Radioastron pulsar observations and to conduct a search for giant pulses, which requires the best temporal resolution., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

Scintillation of pulsar radio signals caused by the interstellar medium can in principle be used for interstellar interferometry. Changes of the dynamic spectra as a function of pulsar longitude were in the past interpreted as having spatially resolved the pulsar magnetosphere. Guided by this prospect we used VLBI observations of PSR B1237+25 with the Arecibo and Green Bank radio telescopes at 324 MHz and analyzed such scintillation at separate longitudes of the pulse profile. We found that the fringe phase characteristics of the visibility function changed quasi-sinusoidally as a function of longitude. Also, the dynamic spectra from each of the telescopes shifted in frequency as a function of longitude. Similar effects were found for PSR B1133+16. However, we show that these effects are not signatures of having resolved the pulsar magnetosphere. Instead the changes can be related to the effect of low-level digitizing of the pulsar signal. After correcting for these effects the frequency shifts largely disappeared. Residual effects may be partly due to feed polarization impurities. Upper limits for the pulse emission altitudes of PSR B1237+25 would likely be well below the pulsar light cylinder radius. In view of our analysis we think that observations with the intent of spatially resolving the pulsar magnetosphere need to be critically evaluated in terms of these constraints on interstellar interferometry., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, published in The Astrophysical Journal

We observed the scintillation pattern of nine bright pulsars at 324 MHz and three at 1.68 GHz and analyzed the wavenumber spectrum which is related to electron density variations of the plasma turbulence of the interstellar medium. For all pulsars the frequency section of the autocorrelation function of the dynamic spectra to at least 45\% of the maximum corresponds to predictions of scattering theories with a range of power-law exponents of the wavenumber spectrum of $3.56 \leq \alpha \leq 3.97$ with errors $\leq 0.05$ and a mean with standard deviation of $3.76\pm0.13$. The range includes $\alpha=3.67$ for the Kolmogorov spectrum. Similar results although with larger errors were found from the Fourier transform of the autocorrelation functions down to $\sim 10^{-3}$ of the maximum. No clear case of a distinction between thin-screen and extended-medium scattering models was found. The average frequency profile of the scintles can be characterized for steep wavenumber spectra with $\alpha\lesssim4$ by a cusp with a somewhat rounded peak. For flatter spectra, down to at least $\alpha\sim 3.56$ the cusp with its peak becomes more pronounced and its decay steepens. Spin waves in yttrium iron garnet (YIG) nano-structures attract increasing attention from the perspective of novel magnon-based data processing applications. For short wavelengths needed in small-scale devices, the group velocity is directly proportional to the spin-wave exchange stiffness constant $\lambda_\mathrm{ex}$. Using wave vector resolved Brillouin Light Scattering (BLS) spectroscopy, we directly measure $\lambda_\mathrm{ex}$ in Ga-substituted YIG thin films and show that it is about three times larger than for pure YIG. Consequently, the spin-wave group velocity overcomes the one in pure YIG for wavenumbers $k > 4$ rad/$\mu$m, and the ratio between the velocities reaches a constant value of around 3.4 for all $k > 20$ rad/$\mu$m. As revealed by vibrating-sample magnetometry (VSM) and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectroscopy, Ga:YIG films with thicknesses down to 59 nm have a low Gilbert damping ($\alpha < 10^{-3}$), a decreased saturation magnetization $\mu_0 M_\mathrm{S}~\approx~20~$mT and a pronounced out-of-plane uniaxial anisotropy of about $\mu_0 H_{\textrm{u1}} \approx 95 $ mT which leads to an out-of-plane easy axis. We report on slow phase variations of the response of the space-ground radio interferometer RadioAstron during observations of pulsar B0329+54. The phase variations are due to the ionosphere and clearly distinguishable from effects of interstellar scintillation. Observations were made in a frequency range of 316-332~MHz with the 110-m Green Bank Telescope and the 10-m RadioAstron telescope in 1-hour sessions on 2012 November 26, 27, 28, and 29 with progressively increasing baseline projections of about 60, 90, 180, and 240 thousand kilometres. Quasi-periodic phase variations of interferometric scintles were detected in two observing sessions with characteristic time-scales of 12 and 10 minutes and amplitudes of up to 6.9~radians. We attribute the variations to the influence of medium-scale Travelling Ionospheric Disturbances. The measured amplitude corresponds to variations in vertical total electron content in ionosphere of about $0.1\times10^{16}\, \mathrm{m}^{-2}$. Such variations would noticeably constrain the coherent integration time in VLBI studies of compact radio sources at low frequencies., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. The carrier transport and the motion of a vortex system in a mixed state of an electron-doped high-temperature superconductors Nd2-xCexCuO4 were investigated. To study the anisotropy of galvanomagnetic effects of highly layered NdCeCuO system we have synthesized Nd2-xCexCuO4/SrTiO3 epitaxial films with non-standart orientations of the c-axis and conductive CuO2 layers relative to the substrate. The variation ofe the angle of inclination of the magnetic field B, relative to the current J, reveals that the behavior of both the in-plane r_xx(B) and the out-plane r_xy(B) resistivities in the mixed state is mainly determined by the perpendicular to J component of B, that indicates the crucial role of the Lorentz force F_L~[JxB] and defines the motion of Josephson vortices across the CuO2 layers., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

The carrier transport and the motion of a vortex system in the electron-doped high-temperature superconductors Nd2-xCexCuO4 in underdoped and optimally doped (x = 0135, 0.145, 0.15) regions, in the area of the evolution from antiferromagnetic to superconducting order were investigated. To study the anisotropy of the transport properties of highly layered NdCeCuO system we have synthesized Nd2-xCexCuO4/SrTiO3 epitaxial films of three types with different orientations of the c-axis and conductive CuO2 layers relative to the substrate. Such a set of samples allowed us to study the processes of both standard (in the CuO2 layers) and lateral (across the CuO2 layers) carrier transfer in the normal and the mixed states of a superconductor. In a flux-flow regime, in magnetic field B, the dynamics of Abrikosov (B||c-axis) and Josephson (B||ab-plane) vortices are thoroughly investigated and analyzed which is perspective for scientific purposes and for practical applications in measurement technology., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

We report on the substructure of visibility functions in the delay domain of PSRs B0329+54, B0823+26, B0834+06, B1933+16 and B0833-45 (Vela) observed with earth-earth and RadioAstron space-earth two-element interferometers at frequencies of 324 MHz and 1668 MHz. All visibility functions display unresolved spikes distributed over a range of delays. They are due to band-limited scintillation noise and related to the scattering time. The envelopes for each but the Vela pulsar are well fit by a single Lorentzian which we interpret as being indicative of isotropic scattering on the plane of the sky due to a thin scattering screen between the pulsar and us. In contrast, the envelope for the Vela pulsar needs to be mostly fit by at least two Lorentzians, a narrow and a broad one at the same zero delay. We interpret this characteristic as indicative of anisotropic scattering due to more complex structure of scattering screens in the supernova remnant. The possibility of describing the delay visibility functions by Lorentzians is likely a general property of pulsars and offers a new way of describing scattering parameters of the intervening interstellar medium. Furthermore, for all our pulsars, the unresolved spikes in visibility functions of similar projected baselines were well correlated indicating that the telescopes are located in the same diffraction spot. The correlation vanished for visibilities from largely different baselines, when some radio telescopes are not in the same spot., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, 4 tables. We have measured temperature and magnetic field dependences of the thermal conductivity along the c-axis, kc, and that along the [110] direction, k110, of CuB2O4 single crystals in zero field and magnetic fields along the c-axis and along the [110] direction. It has been found that the thermal conductivity is nearly isotropic and very large in zero field and that the thermal conductivity due to phonons is dominant in CuB2O4. The temperature and field dependences of kc and k110 have markedly changed at phase boundaries in the magnetic phase diagram, which has been understood to be due to the change of the mean free path of phonons caused by the change of the phonon-spin scattering rate at the phase boundaries. Characterizing stellar convection in multiple dimensions is a topic at the forefront of stellar astrophysics. Numerical simulations are an essential tool for this task. We present an extension of the existing numerical tool-kit A-MaZe that enables such simulations of stratified flows in a gravitational field. The finite-volume based, cell-centered, and time-explicit hydrodynamics solver of A-MaZe was extended such that the scheme is now well-balanced in both momentum and energy. The algorithm maintains an initially static balance between gravity and pressure to machine precision. Quasi-stationary convection in slab-geometry preserves gas energy (internal plus kinetic) on average despite strong local up- and down-drafts. By contrast, a more standard numerical scheme is demonstrated to result in substantial gains of energy within a short time on purely numerical grounds. The test is further used to point out the role of dimensionality, viscosity, and Rayleigh number for compressible convection. Applications to a young sun in 2D and 3D, covering a part of the inner radiative zone as well as the outer convective zone, demonstrate that the scheme meets its initial design goal. We report on observation of an unconventional structure of the quantum Hall effect (QHE) in a $ p$-type HgTe/Cd$_x$Hg$_{1-x}$Te double quantum well (DQW) consisting of two HgTe layers of critical width. The observed QHE is a reentrant function of magnetic field between two $i=2$ states (plateaus at $\rho_{xy}=h/ie^2$) separated by an intermediate $i=1$ state, which looks like some anomalous peak on the extra-long $i=2$ plateau when weakly expressed. The anomalous peak apparently separates two different regimes: a traditional QHE at relatively weak fields for a small density of mobile holes $p_s$ and a high-field QH structure with a $2-1$ plateau--plateau transition corresponding to much larger $p_s$. We show that only a part of holes, residing in an additional light hole subband in the DQW, participate in QHE at weak fields while the rest of holes is excluded into the reservoir formed in the lateral maximum of the valence subband. All the holes come into play at high fields due to a peculiar behavior of the zero-mode levels., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

The aim of our work was to study the spatial structure of inhomogeneities of interstellar plasma in the directions of five pulsars: B0823+26, B0834+06, B1237+25, B1929+10, and B2016+28. Observations of these pulsars were made with RadioAstron space-ground radio interferometer at 324 MHz. We measured the angular size of the scattering disks to be in range between 0.63 and 3.2 mas. We determined the position of scattering screens on the line of sight. Independent estimates of the distances to the screens were made from the curvature of parabolic arcs revealed in the secondary spectra of four pulsars. The model of uniform distribution of inhomogeneities on the line of sight is not suitable. According to the results, we came to the conclusion that scattering is mainly produced by compact plasma layers and the uniform model of inhomogeneties distribution on the line of sight in not applicable., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures

We report on the longitudinal and Hall resistivities of a HgTe quantum well with inverted energy spectrum (dQW = 20.3 nm) measured in the quantum Hall (QH) regime at magnetic fields up to 9 T and temperatures 2-50 K. The temperature dependence of the QH plateau-plateau transition (PPT) widths and of variable range hopping (VRH) conduction on the Hall plateaus are analyzed. The data are presented in a genuine scale form both for PPT regions and for VRH regime. Estimations for the degree of the carrier localization length divergence reveal a decisive role of the long-range random potential (the potential of remote ionized impurities) in the localization - delocalization processes in the QH regime for the system under study., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

Ferromagnetic-ferroelectric nanocomposites are of interest for realizing strong strain mediated coupling between electric and magnetic subsystems due to high surface area-to-volume ratio. This report is on the synthesis of nickel ferrite (NFO) -barium titanate (BTO) core-shell nano-fibers, magnetic field assisted assembly into superstructures, and studies on magneto-electric (ME) interactions. Electrospinning techniques were used to prepare coaxial fibers of 0.5-1.5 micron in diameter. The core-shell structure of annealed fibers was confirmed by electron microscopy and scanning probe microscopy. The fibers were assembled into discs and films in a uniform magnetic field or a field gradient. Studies on ME coupling in the assembled films and discs were done by magnetic field H induced polarization, magneto-dielectric effects at low frequencies and at 16-24 GHz, and low frequency ME voltage coefficients (MEVC). We measured 2~ 2-7% change in remnant polarization and in the permittivity for H = 7 kOe, and a MEVC of 0.4 mV/cm Oe at 30 Hz. A model has been developed for low-frequency ME effects in an assembly of fibers and takes into account dipole-dipole interactions between the fibers and fiber discontinuity. Theoretical estimates for the low-frequency MEVC have been compared with the data. These results indicate strong ME coupling in superstructures of the core-shell fibers.

We study lithium depletion in low-mass and solar-like stars as a function of time, using a new diffusion coefficient describing extra-mixing taking place at the bottom of a convective envelope. This new form is motivated by multi-dimensional fully compressible, time implicit hydrodynamic simulations performed with the MUSIC code. Intermittent convective mixing at the convective boundary in a star can be modeled using extreme value theory, a statistical analysis frequently used for finance, meteorology, and environmental science. In this letter, we implement this statistical diffusion coefficient in a one-dimensional stellar evolution code, using parameters calibrated from multi-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of a young low-mass star. We propose a new scenario that can explain observations of the surface abundance of lithium in the Sun and in clusters covering a wide range of ages, from $\sim$ 50 Myr to $\sim$ 4 Gyr. Because it relies on our physical model of convective penetration, this scenario has a limited number of assumptions. It can explain the observed trend between rotation and depletion, based on a single additional assumption, namely that rotation affects the mixing efficiency at the convective boundary. We suggest the existence of a threshold in stellar rotation rate above which rotation strongly prevents the vertical penetration of plumes and below which rotation has small effects. In addition to providing a possible explanation for the long standing problem of lithium depletion in pre-main sequence and main sequence stars, the strength of our scenario is that its basic assumptions can be tested by future hydrodynamic simulations., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We examine a penetration layer formed between a central radiative zone and a large convection zone in the deep interior of a young low-mass star. Using the Multidimensional Stellar Implicit Code (MUSIC) to simulate two-dimensional compressible stellar convection in a spherical geometry over long times, we produce statistics that characterize the extent and impact of convective penetration in this layer. We apply extreme value theory to the maximal extent of convective penetration at any time. We compare statistical results from simulations which treat non-local convection, throughout a large portion of the stellar radius, with simulations designed to treat local convection in a small region surrounding the penetration layer. For each of these situations, we compare simulations of different resolution, which have different velocity magnitudes. We also compare statistical results between simulations that radiate energy at a constant rate to those that allow energy to radiate from the stellar surface according to the local surface temperature. Based on the frequency and depth of penetrating convective structures, we observe two distinct layers that form between the convection zone and the stable radiative zone. We show that the probability density function of the maximal depth of convective penetration at any time corresponds closely in space with the radial position where internal waves are excited. We find that the maximal penetration depth can be modeled by a Weibull distribution with a small shape parameter. Using these results, and building on established scalings for diffusion enhanced by large-scale convective motions, we propose a new form for the diffusion coefficient that may be used for one-dimensional stellar evolution calculations in the large P\'eclet number regime.
