Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to develop a low cost system for testing and monitoring the performance of PV modules in outdoor conditions. In order to do this, we improved and adapted another measuring system. This system was developed by us and enables us to ensure the performance of the PV module through testing and monitoring, as well as saving collected data to a database. This database can be accessed through a graphical interface on a laptop connected to the system using serial interface. The error sources of this system are reduced to minimum because of human operators interfering with the system only through the graphical user interface. The Two Diode Model with series and parallel resistances was used to estimate the parameters of the electrical equivalent circuit for the PV module. This model will be simulated in CASPOC 2009. The performances of PV module were obtained in outdoor conditions and were saved to the database. They will be compared with the performances obtained through simulation, to prove the efficiency of the model.

Abstract

The development of autonomous battery powered systems which can be deployed in inaccessible locations for sensing applications has determined the development of various energy harvesting systems. Such an energy harvester is the one developed by Powercast which can convert the energy of radio frequency signals into useful power. A model of the harvested power can prove to be a useful tool for simulation purposes as it can provide, to some extent, prior knowledge of available energy resources when optimally deploying sensor networks. To obtain an accurate model of the harvested energy we have developed an experimental setup which has been used to determine the harvested power in two different environments, a hallway and a parking lot. We have developed the experimental setup to determine the amount of power available at the output of the radio frequency harvester which consists of a current measurement system and a data acquisition system. We have also modeled through simulations the harvested power based on the characteristics of the transmitter and receiver antennas and those of the environment. We have compared the results obtained through in field measurement with the ones obtained through simulation and we have shown that within certain margins of error of maximum 2 dBm one can successfully predict the amount of energy the system can harvest. However the RF-DC and Boost converter efficiency are also key factors in the quantity of harvested energy.

Abstract

The paper presents a method for validation/testing a control area network (CAN) communication circuit used in all electronic control units (ECUs) developed in automotive industry after 2000. Using a specific hardware configuration and remotely controlled by LabVIEW. The author's presents their own vision regarding operational software algorithm implementation and integration / execution of some test cases in order to validate a CAN circuit. Using this method, it is possible to validate/test CAN hardware circuits in a short time and with the possibility of saving the test results. Human operator is interfering with the system only through the graphical user interface. The error sources for this system are reduced to minimum.

Abstract

This paper presents a modelling method useful in the education process for the study of DC-DC power conversion principles using pulse width modulation converters. In this paper, the proposed modelling method is applied to a switched mode Fly-back supply. The model of the supply circuit includes the main parasitic elements of its component parts. To analyze the operation mode of the switched mode Fly-back supply its model is implemented with the help of MATLAB programming environment. The implementation of the model is used to simulate the behaviour of the Fly-back supply for both continuous conduction and discontinuous conduction modes, in transient and steady state conditions. The model and its implementation offer to the users an easier way to understand and analyze the operation principle of the switched mode power supplies. Moreover, the authors developed a graphic user interface dedicated to this study. The paper includes simulation and experimental results that validate the model of the supply.

Abstract

The aim of the work is to significantly increase the efficiency of the dehydrating process of fruits with seeds, by treating it with microwaves in combination with convection. To achieve the purpose, an electrical installation was designed, produced, tested, optimized and implemented, which applies the combined technological treatment method in the dehydration process. Pears were selected as the object of the research in particular, because currently the production of these seeded fruits is not fully exploited, but they are of an increased interest for the agricultural producers and for specialized enterprises, and their dehydration by the methods currently used is difficult, especially because of the browning effect that occurs in the heat treatment process. The essential results obtained based on the research carried out, regarding the application of the elaborated installation, are: reduction of electricity consumption and treatment duration, increase in productivity and quality of dehydrated fruits. At the same time, the developed installation is simple in construction, has low cost and is easy to use, and during fruit processing it allows strict monitoring of the technological parameters, and researches demonstrated a high level of safety in operation. The significance of the obtained results lies in the solution to a series of problems, which are currently faced by the enterprises specialized in fruit processing, in particular by significantly increasing the efficiency of the process of dehydration of pears, based on the proposed method of combined treatment, predominantly with increasing the speed of dehydration, energy efficiency, quality of final products and profitability.

Abstract

By merging single-site typical medium theory with density functional theory we introduce a self-consistent framework for electronic structure calculations of materials with substitutional disorder which takes into account Anderson localization. The scheme and details of the implementation are presented and applied to the hypothetical alloy Li$_{c}$Be$_{1-c}$, and the results are compared with those obtained with the coherent potential approximation. Furthermore we demonstrate that Anderson localization suppresses ferromagnetic order for a very low concentration of (i) carbon impurities substituting oxygen in MgO$_{1-c}$C$_{c}$, and (ii) manganese impurities substituting magnesium in Mg$_{1-c}$Mn$_c$O for the low-spin magnetic configuration., Comment: Minor revisions

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Disability progression is a key milestone in the disease evolution of people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). Prediction models of the probability of disability progression have not yet reached the level of trust needed to be adopted in the clinic. A common benchmark to assess model development in multiple sclerosis is also currently lacking. METHODS: Data of adult PwMS with a follow-up of at least three years from 146 MS centers, spread over 40 countries and collected by the MSBase consortium was used. With basic inclusion criteria for quality requirements, it represents a total of 15, 240 PwMS. External validation was performed and repeated five times to assess the significance of the results. Transparent Reporting for Individual Prognosis Or Diagnosis (TRIPOD) guidelines were followed. Confirmed disability progression after two years was predicted, with a confirmation window of six months. Only routinely collected variables were used such as the expanded disability status scale, treatment, relapse information, and MS course. To learn the probability of disability progression, state-of-the-art machine learning models were investigated. The discrimination performance of the models is evaluated with the area under the receiver operator curve (ROC-AUC) and under the precision recall curve (AUC-PR), and their calibration via the Brier score and the expected calibration error. All our preprocessing and model code are available at https://gitlab.com/edebrouwer/ms_benchmark, making this task an ideal benchmark for predicting disability progression in MS. FINDINGS: Machine learning models achieved a ROC-AUC of 0⋅71 ± 0⋅01, an AUC-PR of 0⋅26 ± 0⋅02, a Brier score of 0⋅1 ± 0⋅01 and an expected calibration error of 0⋅07 ± 0⋅04. The history of disability progression was identified as being more predictive for future disability progression than the treatment or relapses history. Abstract

The spin-orbit interaction can cause a nonvanishing density of states (DOS) within the minority-spin band gap of half-metals around the Fermi level. We examine the magnitude of the effect in Heusler alloys, zinc-blende half metals and diluted magnetic semiconductors, using first-principles calculations. We find that the ratio of spin-down to spin-up DOS at the Fermi level can range from below 1% (e.g. 0.5% for NiMnSb) over several percents (4.2% for (Ga,Mn)As) to 13% for MnBi., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Current primary education aims at the multilateral development of students using means that interconnect the subjects studied so that they outline a wide range of key competences at the end of the cycle. The present research seeks to find didactic solutions, experimentally confirmed, transposed by the application of dynamic games, with the goal of improving the speed motor quality cumulative with the consolidation of the competences formed within other disciplines, thus, capitalizing on the multifunctional solution of new learning situations. The study was applied to 54 students from 3rd and 4th grades in rural areas, divided in 2: control group and experimental group. In the school year 2021-2022, the experimental group went through the program containing integrated dynamic games for the development of speed motor quality, solving în the same time certain requirements with interdisciplinary approaches. The obtained results confirm the validity of the hypothesis by improving more obvious the speed motor quality of the students from the experiment group as a result of the implementation of integrated dynamic game program. The study also heileights that a reorganization of activities must be made so that the student can demonstrate interconnections in order to respond promptly to the tasks imposed by the future society. Abstract

Here we describe the LifeTime Initiative, which aims to track, understand and target human cells during the onset and progression of complex diseases, and to analyse their response to therapy at single-cell resolution. This mission will be implemented through the development, integration and application of single-cell multi-omics and imaging, artificial intelligence and patient-derived experimental disease models during the progression from health to disease. The analysis of large molecular and clinical datasets will identify molecular mechanisms, create predictive computational models of disease progression, and reveal new drug targets and therapies. The timely detection and interception of disease embedded in an ethical and patient-centred vision will be achieved through interactions across academia, hospitals, patient associations, health data management systems and industry. The application of this strategy to key medical challenges in cancer, neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders, and infectious, chronic inflammatory and cardiovascular diseases at the single-cell level will usher in cell-based interceptive medicine in Europe over the next decade., The LifeTime initiative is an ambitious, multidisciplinary programme that aims to improve healthcare by tracking individual human cells during disease processes and responses to treatment in order to develop and implement cell-based interceptive medicine in Europe.

By merging single-site typical medium theory with density-functional theory, we introduce a self-consistent framework for electronic-structure calculations of materials with substitutional disorder which takes into account Anderson localization. The scheme and details of the implementation are presented and applied to the hypothetical alloy LicBe1-c, and the results are compared with those obtained with the coherent potential approximation. Furthermore, we demonstrate that Anderson localization suppresses ferromagnetic order for a very low concentration of (i) carbon impurities substituting oxygen in MgO1-cCc and (ii) manganese impurities substituting magnesium in Mg1-cMncO for the low-spin magnetic configuration.

Abstract

LifeTime aims to track, understand and target human cells during the onset and progression of complex diseases and their response to therapy at single-cell resolution. This mission will be implemented through the development and integration of single-cell multi-omics and imaging, artificial intelligence and patient-derived experimental disease models during progression from health to disease. Analysis of such large molecular and clinical datasets will discover molecular mechanisms, create predictive computational models of disease progression, and reveal new drug targets and therapies. Timely detection and interception of disease embedded in an ethical and patient-centered vision will be achieved through interactions across academia, hospitals, patient-associations, health data management systems and industry. Applying this strategy to key medical challenges in cancer, neurological, infectious, chronic inflammatory and cardiovascular diseases at the single-cell level will usher in cell-based interceptive medicine in Europe over the next decade.
