2. Learning From Lessons Learned: Preliminary Findings From a Study of Learning From Failure

Abstract

Due to various sources of uncertainty, emergent behavior, and ongoing changes, the reliability of many socio-technical systems depends on an iterative and collaborative process in which organizations (1) analyze and learn from system failures, and then (2) co-evolve both the technical and human parts of their systems based on what they learn. Many organizations have defined processes for learning from failure, often involving postmortem analyses conducted after any system failures that are judged to be sufficiently severe. Despite established processes and tool support, our preliminary research, and professional experience, suggest that it is not straightforward to take what was learned from a failure and successfully improve the reliability of the socio-technical system. To better understand this collaborative process and the associated challenges, we are conducting a study of how teams learn from failure. We are gathering incident reports from multiple organizations and conducting interviews with engineers and managers with relevant experience. Our analytic interest is in what is learned by teams as they reflect on failures, the learning processes involved, and how they use what is learned. Our data collection and analysis are not yet complete, but we have so far analyzed 13 incident reports and seven interviews. In this short paper we (1) present our preliminary findings, and (2) outline our broader research plans.

5. Quartermaster: A Tool for Modeling and Simulating System Degradation

Abstract

It is essential that software systems be tolerant to degradations in components they rely on. There are patterns and techniques which software engineers use to ensure their systems gracefully degrade. Despite these techniques being available in practice, tuning and configuration is hard to get right and it is expensive to explore possible changes to components and techniques in complex systems. To fill these gaps, we propose Quartermaster to model and simulate systems and fault-tolerant techniques. We anticipate that Quartermaster will be useful to further research on graceful degradation and help inform software engineers about techniques that are most appropriate for their use cases.

Abstract

Excavations at the Middle Pleistocene site of La Cotte de St Brelade, on the island of Jersey in the English Channel, have revealed a long sequence of occupation. The continued use of the site by Neanderthals throughout an extended period of changing climate and environment reveals how, despite changes in the types of behaviour recorded at the site, La Cotte emerged as a persistent place in the memory and landscape of its early hominin inhabitants. The site's status as a persistent place for these people suggests a level of social and cognitive development permitting reference to and knowledge of places distant in time and space as long ago as at least MIS 7. Abstract

Did Neanderthal hunters drive mammoth herds over cliffs in mass kills? Excavations at La Cotte de St Brelade in the 1960s and 1970s uncovered heaps of mammoth bones, interpreted as evidence of intentional hunting drives. New study of this Middle Palaeolithic coastal site, however, indicates a very different landscape to the featureless coastal plain that was previously envisaged. Reconsideration of the bone heaps themselves further undermines the ;mass kill' hypothesis, suggesting that these were simply the final accumulations of bone at the site, undisturbed and preserved in situ when the return to a cold climate blanketed them in wind-blown loess. Abstract

Archaeology South-East (ASE) was commissioned by LUC to undertake an archaeological watching brief during groundworks at Stanmer Park, Brighton, East Sussex (NGR 533456 109536). Archaeological deposits of post medieval/ modern date were recorded in Access Road, in the form of a linear feature of unknown function. In the Soakaway area undisturbed topsoil and subsoil deposits were recorded. In all other parts of the site, truncation was observed with madeground deposits immediately overlying the natural chalk geology.

Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to test the taxonomic utility of the catarrhine supraorbital region using 3D geometric morphometrics, with the aim of establishing its potential use in elucidating the position of more debated hominin groups. Materials and Methods: 230 3D coordinates were used to record the supraorbital morphology of two datasets: one containing 460 non‐hominin catarrhine primates from species and subspecies of Gorilla, Pan, Papio, and Macaca; and the other containing 55 Pleistocene hominins from Homo, Australopithecus, and Paranthropus. Principal component analyses in tangent, form, and allometry‐free shape space were used to assess differentiation of taxa, with biological distinctiveness of taxa being established using step‐wise discriminant analysis with subsampling. Results: Results indicated that the recorded supraorbital morphology could be used to separate non‐hominin catarrhine primate genera, species, and subspecies, although accuracy was found to decrease with decreasing Linnaean rank. In addition, analyses in tangent space were found to produce the highest accuracy when classifying primates of known taxonomy. Biological distinctiveness of the middle and later Homo species was comparable to or higher than that of the non‐hominin primates, and relatively lower for the earlier groups of Homo. Discussion: This study indicates that the supraorbital region preserves taxonomic information that can be used to delineate between closely related groups, both within hominins and wider catarrhine primates. Therefore, this region may be used to provide insight when assessing the taxonomic affiliation of disputed hominin specimens. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Grateful thanks to the AHRC, NERC, the Leverhulme Foundation and the Calleva Foundation Since 2010 a new field project drawn from major UK institutions including the UCL Institute of Archaeology, has focused research on the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic record of the Channel Island of Jersey. In this retrospective of five years of research the history of the project to date, its focus on the Middle Palaeolithic site of La Cotte de St Brelade and its growth into an international research team is charted. The formation of the La Manche Prehistorique research network in 2015 marks a new chapter in the development of this project. With its wider focus, but continued commitment to research in the Channel Islands, the research group are working towards a unified early prehistoric research framework for the English Channel region. Abstract

International audience; Increasing evidence suggests that bifacial technology (Acheulian, Mode 2) arrived in Europe during the early Middle Pleistocene, i.e. significantly earlier than previously proposed. In northern France and Britain, much of the age attribution for these assemblages has been based on biostratigraphy and lithostratigraphy rather than absolute dates. This study presents a systematic application of electron spin resonance (ESR) dating of sedimentary quartz and ESR/U-series dating of fossil tooth enamel to key Acheulian sites of this area. Although the age estimates have large associated uncertainties, most of the derived dates are consistent with existing age estimates. The new chronologies and the problems associated with dating material of early Middle Pleistocene age are discussed. In Britain, the earliest archaeology (cores and flakes, Mode 1) is older than Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 15, whereas localities containing Acheulian technologies span late MIS 15/MIS 13 through to MIS 9. A similar pattern is seen in northern France although age estimates from sites such as la Noira suggest the possible appearance of the Acheulian in central France as early as MIS 17. The dates presented here support the suggestion that the earliest Acheulian appeared in NW Europe during the early Middle Pleistocene, significantly after its appearance in the southern parts of the continent
