Early discharge is a focus for many hospitals to improve patient flow. In a large acute care hospital, an interprofessional workgroup implemented a best practice initiative that increased the percentage of discharges by 11:00 a.m. for adult med- ical-surgical patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: To describe the lived experiences of nurses caring for patients and families in the context of COVID‐19 in Brazil and United States. Design: A phenomenological philosophical approach following the van Manen analysis method. Methods: Participants were recruited in Brazil and the United States, including nurses working in health care settings caring for COVID‐19 patients. Recruitment used purposive and snowball sampling. Participants completed a demographic survey and semi‐structured interviews that were audio‐recorded and transcribed for analysis. A cross‐cultural examination occurred among researchers from each country. Results: The result was described (n = 35) by the themes, representing the essences of each lifeworld (relationship, time, space and body). The nurses' lived experience was one of reframing care while enduring repeated trauma of witnessing disrupted patient‐family‐nurse relationships. Themes were as follows: (a) Living a silent and lonely experience; (b) Providing connectedness for disrupted patient and family relationships; (c) Feeling the burden of the demands; (d) Being a helping connector; (e) Reshaping spaces amidst evolving interventions and policies; (f) Creating safe spaces, surrounded by turmoil, threat, and distress within an unsafe environment; (g) Reorganizing care and reframing time; (h) Reconciling losses, regrets, victories and lessons. Conclusion: The nurses' lived experience of caring for patients and families during the COVID‐19 pandemic prompted the need to respond to repeated traumas and distress posed by interrupted patient‐family and nurse‐own family relationships, vulnerable bodies, threatened space and dynamic and volatile time. Impact: Cultural nuances were discovered depending on the practice setting, political discourse and the autonomy of the nurse. Innovative models of care that create structures and processes to support nurses in caring for patients in threatening environments and the commitment to connecting family members have potential to contribute to the ongoing health of the nursing profession. The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified the social isolation of individuals with cancer. Studies about how to address social isolation among patients with cancer are limited, yet data from other high-risk populations can inform oncology nursing practice. This literature review of evidence-based clinical interventions provides a foundation for clinical oncology nursing practice. With the use of technology, institutional resources, and community resources, oncology nurses can tailor physical activity, psychotherapy, and socialization interventions to reduce the negative psychosocial outcomes of isolation. The article reports on the research views on Oncology Nursing Certification. Topics include validation of nurses their specialized knowledge of oncology care, institutional recognition helped lessen the importance of cost as a deterrent as reported by the nurses, and decreased in patient fall rates with shorter lengths of stay and better patient skin with a higher percentage of certified nurses.

Ovarian cancer is the second most common gynecologic cancer in the US and has the highest mortality rate of female reproductive cancers. Unique challenges exist for women with ovarian cancer and their partners including an intense and prolonged treatment course, and high rate of disease recurrence. The spouse's experience of ovarian cancer is largely unexplored. Because husbands of women with other cancers can experience as much stress related to the cancer experience as patients, the purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of partners of women with ovarian cancer. Phenomenology provided the philosophical framework to explore and describe the meaning of the partner's experience. Since the individual's experience is unique and paramount, data were analyzed to include common and unique experiences as described by spouses. Common experiences are presented here. A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive research design was used. Criterion sampling identified 11 spouses of women with ovarian cancer, who were at least 18 years of age, able to speak and read English, and able to participate in a one-to-one telephone interview. Data were collected through individual telephone interviews, which lasted approximately an hour. A semi- structured interview format was used and included the initial question, "Please describe your experience with your significant other's ovarian cancer". The interviews were audiotaped, transcribed verbatim and the transcripts were reviewed to verify accuracy. Analysis was performed by one PHD prepared and one PHD candidate, both oncology nurses. Significant statements were extracted from the data independently then discussed, the meanings formulated then aggregated into clusters using Colazzi's methodology. Discrepancies were discussed until agreement was reached. Common clusters included having a new priority/focus, how her response affects his response, and changes in their relationship. A majority also described their initial response to the diagnosis, how others shared his burden of providing support, and the role of the family during the experience. This study identified several areas of concern for these spouses and suggests that significant positive and negative changes take place individually for the spouse and for the couple which are likely amenable to nursing interventions and need to be explored in future research. Since its creation more than twenty years ago, the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC) has made significant advances in the development, administration, and evaluation of certification programs for oncology nurses. ONCC currently develops and administers certification programs in basic adult and pediatric oncology, and advanced certification for oncology clinical nurse specialists and oncology nurse practitioners. Over 24,000 oncology nurses hold one of five credentials offered by ONCC. The purpose of this presentation is threefold: 1) explore the 20-year growth of certification in oncology, 2) describe the geographical distribution of oncology certified nurses, and 3) summarize the results of a recent national survey on the perceived value of certification and future research questions of importance to nursing certification. This presentation will use the unique approach of presenting a series of maps showing the distribution of oncology certified nurses compared to the location and distribution of other relevant data such as Magnet hospitals, ONCC Advocates, ONS members, and RNs nationwide. Results of a recent American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS) survey examining the value of certification will be introduced. The ABNS survey, conducted with ONCC participation, was administered to a national sample of certified and non-certified nurses and a small sample of nurse managers. Study results include the perceived value of certification; the barriers, benefits and rewards of certification; and the impact of certification on lost workdays and retention. Responses from oncology nurses will be highlighted and compared to those of respondents in other specialties.
