3. Giant resonant enhancement for photo-induced superconductivity in K$_3$C$_{60}$

Photo-excitation at terahertz and mid-infrared frequencies has emerged as a new way to manipulate functionalities in quantum materials, in some cases creating non-equilibrium phases that have no equilibrium analogue. In K$_3$C$_{60}$, a metastable zero-resistance phase was documented with optical properties and pressure dependences compatible with non-equilibrium high temperature superconductivity. Here, we report the discovery of a dominant energy scale for this phenomenon, along with the demonstration of a giant increase in photo-susceptibility near 10 THz excitation frequency. At these drive frequencies a metastable superconducting-like phase is observed up to room temperature for fluences as low as ~400 $\mu J/cm^2$. These findings shed light on the microscopic mechanism underlying photo-induced superconductivity. Herein, we present the design and fabrication of a portable biochemical sensor based on the Screen Printed Electrode (SPE) concept and applied for detecting interleukin-6 (IL-6), a key player in the complex process of inflammation, in real human saliva. The sensing mechanism relies on the antigen-antibody binding between the IL-6 molecule and its antibody immobilized over a surface of a Thermally Exfoliated Graphene Oxide (TEGO) layer. TEGO, deposited by Aerosol Jet Printing (AJP), provides advantages in terms of a time/cost consumingfast, easy and efficient biofunctionalization. The biosensor shows a dynamic range comprising IL-6 concentrations falling within the normal IL-6 levels in saliva. An extensive analysis of device performance, focused on the assessment of the sensor Limit of Detection (LoD) by two modes (i.e. from the lin-log calibration curve and from blank measurements), provides a best value of about 1 × 10−2 pg/ml of IL-6 in saliva. Our work aims at providing a contribution toward applications in real environment, going beyond a proof of concept or prototyping at lab scale. Hence, the characterization of the sensor was finalized to find a reliable device-to-device reproducibility and calibration through the introduction of a measurement protocol based on comparative measurements between saliva samples without (blank) and with IL-6 spiked in it, in place of the standard addition method used in daily laboratory practice. Device-to-device reproducibility has been accordingly tested by acquiring multiple experimental points along the calibration curve using different individual devices for each point.

The present paper is focused to understand the reinforcement mechanisms exerted by GO nanosheets to both strengthen and toughen cement-matrix composites since, despite intensive research, such mechanisms are still not completely clear. To such an aim, the mechanical characteristics (that is, mechanical strengths and fracture toughness) of a cement-matrix nanocomposite, with the 0.05 % of GO used as an additive, are experimentally investigated at different curing times. Since reinforcement mechanisms are closely related to cement hydration products, they are qualified and quantified by chemical, mineralogical and microstructural analyses performed at the above times of curing. The present investigation leads to the conclusion that the role of both CSH and AFt content is dominant in strengthen and toughen of cement matrix-nanocomposites with GO used as an additive.

Alkali-doped fullerides are strongly correlated organic superconductors that exhibit high transition temperatures, exceptionally large critical magnetic fields and a number of other unusual properties. The proximity to a Mott insulating phase is thought to be a crucial ingredient of the underlying physics, and may also affect precursors of superconductivity in the normal state above T$_\text{c}$. We report on the observation of a sizeable magneto-thermoelectric (Nernst) effect in the normal state of K$_3$C$_{60}$, which displays the characteristics of superconducting fluctuations. The anomalous Nernst effect emerges from an ordinary quasiparticle background below a temperature of 80K, far above T$_\text{c}$ = 20K. At the lowest fields and close to T$_\text{c}$, the scaling of the effect is captured by a model based on Gaussian fluctuations. The temperature up to which we observe fluctuations is exceptionally high for a three-dimensional isotropic system, where fluctuation effects are usually suppressed.

Liver and heart disease are major causes of death worldwide. It is known that metabolic alteration causing type 2 diabetes (T2D) and Nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFLD) coupled with a derangement in lipid homeostasis, may exacerbate hepatic and cardiovascular diseases. Some pharmacological treatments can mitigate organ dysfunctions but the important side effects limit their efficacy leading often to deterioration of the tissues. It needs to develop new personalized treatment approaches and recent progresses of engineered RNA molecules are becoming increasingly viable as alternative treatments. This review outlines the current use of antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs), RNA interference (RNAi) and RNA genome editing as treatment for rare metabolic disorders. However, the potential for small non-coding RNAs to serve as therapeutic agents for liver and heart diseases is yet to be fully explored. Although miRNAs are recognized as biomarkers for many diseases, they are also capable of serving as drugs for medical intervention; several clinical trials are testing miRNAs as therapeutics for type 2 diabetes, nonalcoholic fatty liver as well as cardiac diseases. Recent advances in RNA-based therapeutics may potentially facilitate a novel application of miRNAs as agents and as druggable targets. In this work, we sought to summarize the advancement and advantages of miRNA selective therapy when compared to conventional drugs. In particular, we sought to emphasise druggable miRNAs, over ASOs or other RNA therapeutics or conventional drugs. Finally, we sought to address research questions related to efficacy, side-effects, and range of use of RNA therapeutics. Additionally, we covered hurdles and examined recent advances in the use of miRNA-based RNA therapy in metabolic disorders such as diabetes, liver, and heart diseases.

Far and mid infrared optical pulses have been shown to induce non-equilibrium unconventional orders in complex materials, including photo-induced ferroelectricity in quantum paraelectrics, magnetic polarization in antiferromagnets and transient superconducting correlations in the normal state of cuprates and organic conductors. In the case of non-equilibrium superconductivity, femtosecond drives have generally resulted in electronic properties that disappear immediately after excitation, evidencing a state that lacks intrinsic rigidity. Here, we make use of a new optical device to drive metallic K$_3$C$_{60}$ with mid-infrared pulses of tunable duration, ranging between one picosecond and one nanosecond. The same superconducting-like optical properties observed over short time windows for femtosecond excitation are shown here to become metastable under sustained optical driving, with lifetimes in excess of ten nanoseconds. Direct electrical probing becomes possible at these timescales, yielding a vanishingly small resistance. Such a colossal positive photo-conductivity is highly unusual for a metal and, when taken together with the transient optical conductivities, it is rather suggestive of metastable light-induced superconductivity., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, supplementary materials

Abstract Glucagon (traditional kits for intramuscular administration, Glucagon and Glucagen), although recommended as a remedy for severe hypoglycemia (SH), has been reported to be under-utilized, likely because of technical problems. The aims of this study were to evaluate the use of glucagon in persons with type 1 diabetes in several countries, and to investigate if the availability of new ready-to-use glucagons (Baqsimi, Gvoke, Zegalogue, years 2019 to 2021) has expanded the overall use of glucagon. The source of data was IQVIA-MIDAS (units of glucagon sold), while data on persons with type 1 diabetes in countries were derived from IDF Diabetes Atlas. The use of glucagon has been steady from 2014 to 2019, with a small but significant increase from 2019 to 2021, paradoxically only in countries where new ready-to-use glucagons were not available. The use of glucagon has always been ten fold greater in countries where new ready-to-use glucagons became available than in the other countries (population 108,000,000 vs 28,100,000, 480,291 vs 182,018 persons with type 1 diabetes). A significant correlation was observed in all years between units of glucagon and persons with type 1 diabetes. Availability of new ready-to-use glucagons was associated with a small increase of sales, due only to new ready-to-use glucagons themselves. The use of glucagon (any type) remains low, approximately 1/10 of persons with type 1 diabetes. We conclude that use of glucagon is scarce in most countries, and so far has not been expanded by new ready-to-use glucagons such as the ones considered in this study.

Biochar (BC) boasts diverse environmental applications. However, its potential for environmental biomonitoring has, surprisingly, remained largely unexplored. This study presents a preliminary analysis of BC’s potential as a biomonitor for the environmental availability of ionic Cd, utilizing the lichen Evernia prunastri (L.) Ach. as a reference organism. For this purpose, the lichen E. prunastri and two types of wood-derived biochar, biochar 1 (BC1) and biochar 2 (BC2), obtained from two anonymous producers, were investigated for their ability to accumulate, or sequester and subsequently release, Cd when exposed to Cd-depleted conditions. Samples of lichen and biochar (fractions between 2 and 4 mm) were soaked for 1 h in a solution containing deionized water (control), 10 µM, and 100 µM Cd2+ (accumulation phase). Then, 50% of the treated samples were soaked for 24 h in deionized water (depuration phase). The lichen showed a very good ability to adsorb ionic Cd, higher than the two biochar samples (more than 46.5%), and a weak ability to release the metal (ca. 6%). As compared to the lichen, BC2 showed a lower capacity for Cd accumulation (−48%) and release (ca. 3%). BC1, on the other hand, showed a slightly higher Cd accumulation capacity than BC2 (+3.6%), but a release capacity similar to that of the lichen (ca. 5%). The surface area and the cation exchange capacity of the organism and the tested materials seem to play a key role in their ability to accumulate and sequester Cd, respectively. This study suggests the potential use of BC as a (bio)monitor for the presence of PTEs in atmospheric depositions and, perhaps, water bodies.

Abstract The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate risk factors for 3-years mortality after hospital discharge in all inpatients admitted to a general hospital in Milano, Italy. A total of 2580 consecutive patients admitted to Ospedale San Paolo, July 1 to December 31, 2012, for several classes of diseases (internal medicine, cancer, infectious diseases, trauma and surgery, pneumonia, and heart diseases) were studied. Age, total disease, type of admission, length of admission, age-adjusted Charlson index, prognostic nutritional index (PNI), and full blood count were evaluated. Univariate Cox models were used to evaluate the association between variables and death. Of the 2580 consecutive patients (age 66.8 ± 19.36 years, mean ± SD), 920 died within 3 years after discharge. At univariate analysis, all investigated variables, except sex and lymphocytes, were associated with patient death. Stepwise regression analyses revealed that the age-adjusted Charlson index or age plus total diseases, type of admission, number of admissions, and PNI were significant risk factors in the whole sample and in some classes of disease. Results were superimposable when considering death from date of admission instead of date of discharge, meaning that in-hospital death was not relevant to the total death count (115 out of 902). Seriousness of baseline conditions represents the major risk factor for mortality in most classes of disease, and possibly influences other predictors, such as type of admission and length of stay. This suggests that the current model of hospital admission might be improved, for instance, through comprehensive care at home, instead of hospital admission, or before admission.

23. Characterisation of strontium-containing apatite-wollastonite porous scaffolds

Porous strontium-doped apatite-wollastonite scaffolds were evaluated as potential substitutes for enhanced bone regeneration and the prevention of peri-prosthetic infections. Parent glasses of composition 35.5SiO2-7.1MgO-0.4CaF2-7.1P2O5-(49.9-x)CaO-xSrO mol%, where x = 0, 6.2, 12.5, 18.7, 24.9 or 37.4, were produced via the melt-quench route, ground and sieved < 45 μm. Porous scaffolds were obtained following the foam-replication method and heat-treated at 1050 °C for 2 h for controlled nucleation and growth of the crystal phases. All six glasses produced were amorphous. Differential scanning calorimetry showed that the formation of the calcium silicate phase strongly depended on the amount of strontium contained in the parent glass, linearly moving to higher temperatures with increasing strontium. Morphological evaluation (scanning electron microscopy and micro-computed tomography) proved that the obtained scaffold porosity, about 55 vol%, did not depend on the strontium content. X-ray diffraction showed that strontium preferentially substituted in apatite, while only higher strontium compositions formed a strontium magnesium calcium silicate phase. Compressive and biaxial flexural strength were both comparable to cancellous bone. Compositions containing 0 %, 6.2 % and 12.5 % strontium showed excellent apatite forming ability when submerged in simulated body fluid, which then decreased with increasing strontium for the three higher-strontium compositions. Microbiological tests carried out on strontium-containing salts showed no effective antibacterial properties for strontium as a free element. Amongst the six strontium-containing glasses, only the 37.4 % strontium oxide glass showed antimicrobial effects against Pseudomonas aeruginosa in broth dilution tests. Proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of porous scaffolds were tested on human bone cells. No conclusive results were obtained for the G292 cell line. When scaffolds were tested with human primary mesenchymal stromal cells, an increase in DNA content was observed with increasing strontium, while enhanced alkaline phosphatase activity and increased collagen production were found for low strontium compositions.

Optical excitation at terahertz frequencies has emerged as an effective means to manipulate complex solids dynamically. In the molecular solid K3C60, coherent excitation of intramolecular vibrations was shown to transform the high temperature metal into a non-equilibrium state with the optical conductivity of a superconductor. Here we tune this effect with hydrostatic pressure, and we find it to disappear around 0.3 GPa. Reduction with pressure underscores the similarity with the equilibrium superconducting phase of K3C60, in which a larger electronic bandwidth is detrimental for pairing. Crucially, our observation excludes alternative interpretations based on a high-mobility metallic phase. The pressure dependence also suggests that transient, incipient superconductivity occurs far above the 150 K hypothesised previously, and rather extends all the way to room temperature., Comment: 33 pages, 17 figures, 2 tables

We report on the hydrogen sorption investigation of the mixed alkali cluster intercalated fulleride series NaxLi6-xC60. These compounds are isostructural to Na6C60 and Li6C60 while the cubic lattice parameter is linearly dependent on x. The H2 absorption/desorption was studied by means of charge/discharge kinetic and coupled calorimetric - manometric measurements. By varying the stoichiometry, we found the best compromise between absorption rate, temperature and amount of hydrogen in Na1Li5C60. This system is able to reversibly absorb up to 4.3 wt% H2 at 280 {\deg}C, which is 70 {\deg}C lower in temperature than its parent compound Li6C60. Furthermore, the kinetics is improved of 67% with respect Li6C60 and the dehydrogenation enthalpy is 13 kJ/mol H2 lower., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

We present a detailed NMR study of the insulator to metal transition induced by an applied pressure $p$ in the A15 phase of Cs$_{3}$C$_{60}$. We evidence that the insulating antiferromagnetic (AF) and superconducting (SC) phases only coexist in a narrow $p$ range. At fixed $p$, in the metallic state above the SC transition $T_c$, the $^{133}$Cs and $^{13}$C NMR spin lattice relaxation data are seemingly governed by a pseudogap like feature. We prove that this feature, also seen in the $^{133}$Cs NMR shift data is rather a signature of the Mott transition, which broadens and smears out progressively for increasing $(p,T)$. The analysis of the variation of the quadrupole splitting $\nu _{Q}$ of the $^{133}$Cs NMR spectrum precludes any cell symmetry change at the Mott transition and only monitors a weak variation of lattice parameter. These results open an opportunity to consider theoretically the Mott transition in a multiorbital three dimensional system well beyond its critical point.

The $10$ GHz microwave conductivity, $\sigma(T)$ and high field, $222$ GHz electron spin resonance (HF-ESR) of Li$_4$C$_{60}$ fulleride is measured in a wide temperature range. We suggest that the majority of ESR active sites and at least some of the charge carriers for $\sigma(T)$ are electrons bound to a small concentration of surplus or vacancy ions in the polymer phase. Both $\sigma(T)$ and the ESR line shape depend on ionic motion. A change of the activation energy of $\sigma(T)$ at $125$ K coincides with the onset of the ionic DC conductivity. The ESR line shape is determined mainly by Li ionic motion within octahedral voids below $150$ K. At higher temperatures, fluctuations due to ionic diffusion change the environment of defects from axial to effectively isotropic on the ESR time scale. $\sigma(T)$ data up to $700$ K through the depolymerization transition confirm that the monomeric phase of Li$_4$C$_{60}$ is a metal.

Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) could provide energy-efficient purification of water and air. Its efficacy is constrained mainly by limited photocatalytic activity and active surface. To address both, solid foams with hierarchic porous structures spanning multiple length-scales, stabilized by photocatalytic Zn-doped titania nanoparticles (NP) were synthesized and tested. The NP were characterized by SEM, EDS, DLS, XRD, Raman and UV–Vis spectroscopies. Solid foams were stabilized by NP complexes with cationic surfactants. The foam morphology was characterized and photocatalytic activity was demonstrated in water. The present work paves the way for the development of efficient systems for air and water purification in demanding technological sectors, such as aerospace.

The control of non-equilibrium phenomena in complex solids is an important research frontier, encompassing new effects like light induced superconductivity. Here, we show that coherent optical excitation of molecular vibrations in the organic conductor K3C60 can induce a non-equilibrium state with the optical properties of a superconductor. A transient gap in the real part of the optical conductivity and a low-frequency divergence of the imaginary part are measured for base temperatures far above equilibrium Tc=20 K. The two-dimensional polymer structure and lattice dynamics of the superionic conductor Li4 C60 are investigated by neutron diffraction and spectroscopy. The peculiar bonding architecture of this compound is definitely confirmed through the precise localisation of the carbon atoms involved in the intermolecular bonds. The spectral features of this phase are revealed through ab-initio lattice dynamics calculations and inelastic neutron scattering experiments. The neutron observables are found to be in very good agreement with the simulations which predict a partial charge transfer from the Li atoms to the C60 cage. The absence of a well defined band associated to one category of the Li atoms in the experimental spectrum suggests that this species is not ordered even at the lowest temperatures. The calculations predict an unstable Li sublattice at a temperature of 200 K, that we relate to the large ionic diffusivity of this system. This specificity is discussed in terms of coupling between the low frequency optic modes of the Li ions to the soft structure of the polymer., Comment: 29 pages, 13 Figures

Abstract Background Information about the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system (RAAS) in obese individuals before and after bariatric surgery is scarce. Aim of this study was to analyze the RAAS in severely obese subjects, in relation to anthropometric and metabolic variables, with special reference to glucose tolerance. Methods 239 subjects were evaluated at baseline, and 181 one year after bariatric surgery [laparoscopic gastric banding (LAGB)]. Results At baseline, renin (plasma renin activity, PRA) was increased from normal to glucose tolerance and more in diabetes, also correlating with ferritin. After LAGB, the decrease of PRA and aldosterone was significant in hypertensive, but not in normotensive subjects, and correlatied with decrease of ferritin. PRA and glucose levels were predictive of persistent hypertension 1 year after LAGB. Conclusions These data support the role of RAAS in the pathophysiology of glucose homeostasis, and in the regulation of blood pressure in obesity. Ferritin, as a proxy of subclinical inflammation, could be another factor contributing to the cross-talk between RAAS and glucose metabolism.

Alkali-doped fullerides are strongly correlated organic superconductors that exhibit high transition temperatures, exceptionally large critical magnetic fields, and a number of other unusual properties. The proximity to a Mott insulating phase is thought to be a crucial ingredient of the underlying physics and may also affect precursors of superconductivity in the normal state above T_{c}. We report on the observation of a sizable magneto-thermoelectric (Nernst) effect in the normal state of K_{3}C_{60}, which displays the characteristics of superconducting fluctuations. This nonquasiparticle Nernst effect emerges from an ordinary quasiparticle background below a temperature of 80 K, far above T_{c}=20 K. At the lowest fields and close to T_{c}, the scaling of the effect is captured by a model based on Gaussian fluctuations. The behavior at higher magnetic fields displays a symmetry between the magnetic length and the correlation length of the system. The temperature up to which we observe fluctuations is exceptionally high for a three-dimensional isotropic system, where fluctuation effects are expected to be suppressed.

Periodontal disease (PD) during pregnancy may trigger systemic inflammation, increasing the risk of developing cardiometabolic disease (CMD). As a consequence, PD may result in the activation of cellular and molecular pathways, affecting the disease course and pregnancy outcome. Although microRNAs (miRNAs) are considered ideal biomarkers for many diseases, few studies have investigated salivary miRNAs and their role in pregnancy or neonatal outcomes. In this study, we sought to investigate the associations between salivary miRNAs of pregnant women with oral diseases and their effects on neonatal outcomes. Eleven (n = 11) salivary miRNAs from a cohort of pregnant women with oral diseases (n = 32; oral health, H; gingivitis, G; and periodontitis, P) were detected using a previous profiling analysis with an FDR < 0.20 and a fold change (FC) < 0.5 or FC > 2 for the most highly expressed miRNAs. Spearman correlations were performed for 11 salivary microRNAs associated with oral-derived inflammation, which could affect neonatal outcomes during pregnancies at risk for cardiometabolic disease (CMD), defined by the presence of a high pregestational BMI. In addition, ROC curves demonstrated the diagnostic accuracy of the markers used. Upregulation of miR-423-5p expression and a decrease in miR-27b-3p expression were detected in the P-group (p < 0.05), and ROC analysis revealed the diagnostic accuracy of miR-423-5p for discriminating oral diseases, such as gingivitis versus periodontitis (P vs. G, AUC = 0.78, p < 0.05), and for discriminating it from the healthy oral cavity (P vs. H, AUC = 0.9, p < 0.01). In addition, miR-27b-3p and miR-622 were also able to discriminate the healthy group from the P-group (AUC = 0.8, p < 0.05; AUC = 0.8, p < 0.05). miR-483-5p was able to discriminate between the G-group (AUC = 0.9, p < 0.01) and the P-group (AUC = 0.8, p < 0.05). These data support the role of salivary miRNAs as early biomarkers for neonatal outcomes in pregnant women with periodontal disease at high risk for CMD and suggest that there is cross-talk between salivary miRNAs and subclinical systemic inflammation. Nanoparticles of Li–Ni, Li–(Ni, Cu) and Li–Cr layered oxides, with potential applications as cathode materials in lithium batteries, were prepared by solid-state reaction and sol-gel method. The combination of structural analysis and magnetic characterization allowed the clear identification of the phases present in the synthesized nanoparticles. The main component of Li–Ni oxide nanoparticles is the electrochemically active and ferrimagnetic phase Li _1− _z Ni _1+ _z O _2 , whereas those of Li–Cr oxide are the antiferromagnetic phases LiCrO _2 and Cr _2 O _3 . A small substitution of Cu for Ni in Li–Ni oxide determines the formation of nanoparticles in which the main phase is the antiferromagnetic phase Li _1− _z Ni _1+ _z O _2 . Operation tests in lithium batteries and post-mortem analysis, aimed at assessing the potential of metal oxide nanoparticles as cathode materials, were performed on all samples.
