This study was carried out to investigate the continuous aqueous pretreatment of sugarcane bagasse (SCB) through twin-screw extrusion for a new integrated full valorization, where the solid residue (extrudate) was used for the production of bio-based materials by thermocompression and the filtrate for the production of high-value-added molecules. Two configurations, with and without a filtration module, were tested and the influence of the SCB composition and structure on the properties of the materials were determined. The impact of the liquid-to-solid (L/S) ratio was studied (0.65-6.00) in relation to the material properties and the biomolecule extraction yield in the filtrate (with the filtration configuration). An L/S ratio of at least 1.25 was required to obtain a liquid filtrate, and increasing the L/S ratio to 2 increased the extraction yield to 11.5 g/kg of the inlet SCB. The extrudate obtained without filtration yielded materials with properties equivalent to those obtained with filtration for L/S ratios of at least 1.25. Since the molecule extraction process was limited, a configuration without filtration would make it possible to reduce water consumption in the process while obtaining high material properties. Under the filtration configuration, an L/S ratio of 2 was the best tradeoff between water consumption, extraction yield, and the material properties, which included 1485 kg/m3 density, 6.2 GPa flexural modulus, 51.2 MPa flexural strength, and a water absorption (WA) and thickness swelling (TS) of 37% and 44%, respectively, after 24 h of water immersion. The aqueous pretreatment by twin-screw extrusion allowed for the overall valorization of SCB, resulting in materials with significantly improved properties compared to those obtained with raw SCB due to fiber deconstruction. Different types, ceramic and polyethersulfone, ultrafiltration membranes were evaluated to purify a wood extract obtained in pressurized hot water conditions. Tests were performed at transmembrane pressure (TMP) from 0.4 to 2.0 bars with membrane molecular weight cut-offs ranging from 5 kDa to 100 kDa. The results showed the permeate fluxes were lower than 15 L.h-1.m-², except for the 100 kDa organic membrane, with no influence of the feed flowrate. The retention of total phenolic compounds highly depends on the membrane cut-off but the retention rates of gallic and ellagic acid were not directly link to the cut-off. The retention rate of gallic acid is lower than 10%, when ellagic acid had retention ranging from 75 to 95 % for the membrane 5 kDa. It is suggested that other phenomena could be involved in solute retention, i.e. Donnan effect or solubility, that could explain so large differences.

The optimization of cell disruption is a critical step in microalgal biorefineries. We used the same batch of Tetraselmis suecica culture to compare two mechanical cell disruption techniques, focusing on the extraction yield of water-soluble molecules. The conditions for high-pressure homogenization (HPH) studied were two passes at a moderate pressure of 300 bars. For ultrasound (US) treatment, we used an amplitude of 20% (equivalent to 100 W) for 25 min. These conditions were chosen on the basis of a preliminary screen of extraction conditions. HPH extracted proteins and pigments more efficiently than US, whereas US was superior for uronic acid extraction. Interestingly, the two methods had similar extraction yields for carbohydrates under the studied conditions. We also analyzed the kinetics of molecule release by considering the centrifugation time lag for HPH and applying a first-order kinetic model for US. In this study, the separation of lignin from a mild alkaline sugarcane bagasse extract was studied, and the impacts of different parameters on the filtration performance were evaluated. The tested parameters included transmembrane pressure (0.5–3.0 bar), shear rates (2831–22,696 s−1), temperature (20 and 40 °C), membrane molecular weight cut-off (5 and 10 kDa), and membrane material (polyethersulfone and polysulfone). During the filtration process, the permeate flux and all the main components of the extract were analyzed, including lignins (acid insoluble lignin and acid soluble lignin), sugars (xylose, arabinose, glucose, and galactose), total phenolic compounds, and phenolic acids (p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, vanillin, and 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde). It was proved that the tested conditions had a great impact on the permeate flux and molecule retention rate. Increasing the temperature from 20 to 40 °C resulted in a much higher permeate flux for the 5 kDa PES membrane, and the impact of shear rate was greater at 40 °C for this membrane. Although the 5 kDa PES membrane could retain slightly more large molecules, i.e., acid-insoluble lignin and xylose, the 10 kDa membrane afforded greater phenolic acid removal capacity, leading to higher purity. For the 10 kDa PS membrane, the polarization layer began to form at TMP below 0.5 bar. This membrane had a lower retention rate for all molecules than the 10 kDa PES membrane. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biorefinery of sunflower whole plant was performed successfully using a thermo-mechano-chemical twin-screw reactor. This led to the aqueous extraction of oil and other biopolymers like proteins, pectins and non pectic sugars. It resulted in the overall fractionation of biomass, thus allowing a complete valorization of the input. This biorefinery process was not only efficient but it was also environment-friendly. In addition, it contributed to the production of different end products for various industrial applications. Firstly, the hydrophilic phase will be recycled to the process. Secondly, the densest oil-in-water emulsion is a promising candidate for the formulation of cosmetic creams. Thirdly, the upper hydrophobic phase will be usable for the waterproofing treatment of the surface of agromaterials by coating. Its demixing will also lead to the production of proteins with tensioactive properties. These will serve for the food industry. Lastly, the cake was a mixture of plasticized proteins and lignocellulosic fibers. It was thus considered as a natural composite. Its molding into cohesive fiberboards was conducted successfully using both thermopressing and compression molding processes. The self-bonded boards with high density will be suitable for use as load bearing boards in dry conditions (floor underlayers, interior partitions, furniture, etc.). Positioned in walls and ceilings, boards with medium and low density will contribute to the heat insulation of buildings. In addition, the bulk cake will be also usable as a loose fill insulation material. As proposed, this flow chart thus allows a valorization for all fractions originating from the twin-screw reactor.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of an aqueous process for the biorefinery of sunflower whole plant using a co-rotating twin-screw extruder. Traditionally, aqueous extraction of oil is looked upon as an environmentally cleaner alternative technology to the solvent extraction (Rosenthal et al., 1996) and the twin-screw extruder carries out three essential unit operations continuously: conditioning and grinding of whole plant, liquid/solid extraction and liquid/solid separation. Wringing out the mixing is favoured thanks to the stalk fibers. However, drying of the cake meal is not optimal and lixiviation of cotyledon cells within the seed is incomplete. Extraction efficiency depends on the operating conditions: screw rotation speed, input flow rates of whole plant and water. In best conditions, oil yield is 57% and residual oil content in the cake meal is 14%. These conditions lead to the co-extraction of proteins, pectins and hemicelluloses. Protein yield is 44% and residual protein content in the cake meal is 7%. Oil is extracted in the form of two oil-in-water emulsions stabilized by phospholipids and proteins at interface. An aqueous extract containing part of the water-soluble constituents from whole plant, mainly proteins and pectins, is also generated. As a mixture of fibers and proteins, the cake meal can be moulded by thermo-pressing. Panels have promising mechanical properties in bending.
