2. A simple psychophysical procedure separates representational and noise components in impairments of speech prosody perception after right-hemisphere stroke

Abstract After a right hemisphere stroke, more than half of the patients are impaired in their capacity to produce or comprehend speech prosody. Yet, and despite its social-cognitive consequences for patients, aprosodia following stroke has received scant attention. In this report, we introduce a novel, simple psychophysical procedure which, by combining systematic digital manipulations of speech stimuli and reverse-correlation analysis, allows estimating the internal sensory representations that subtend how individual patients perceive speech prosody, and the level of internal noise that govern behavioral variability in how patients apply these representations. Tested on a sample of N = 22 right-hemisphere stroke survivors and N = 21 age-matched controls, the representation + noise model provides a promising alternative to the clinical gold standard for evaluating aprosodia (MEC): both parameters strongly associate with receptive, and not expressive, aprosodia measured by MEC within the patient group; they have better sensitivity than MEC for separating high-functioning patients from controls; and have good specificity with respect to non-prosody-related impairments of auditory attention and processing. Taken together, individual differences in either internal representation, internal noise, or both, paint a potent portrait of the variety of sensory/cognitive mechanisms that can explain impairments of prosody processing after stroke.

4. Mental Representations of Speech and Musical Pitch Contours Reveal a Diversity of Profiles in Autism Spectrum Disorder

As an information-bearing auditory attribute of sound, pitch plays a crucial role in the perception of speech and music. Studies examining pitch processing in autism spectrum disorder have produced equivocal results. To understand this discrepancy from a mechanistic perspective, we used a novel data-driven method, the reverse-correlation paradigm, to explore whether the equivocal findings in autism spectrum disorder have high-level origins in top-down comparisons of internal mental representations of pitch contours. Thirty-two Mandarin-speaking autistic individuals and 32 non-autistic individuals undertook three subtasks testing mental representations of pitch contours in speech, complex tone and melody, respectively. The results indicate that while the two groups exhibited similar representations of pitch contours across the three conditions, the autistic group showed a significantly higher intra-group variability than the non-autistic group. In addition, the two groups did not differ significantly in internal noise, a measure of the robustness of participant responses to external variability, suggesting that the present findings translate genuinely qualitative differences and similarities between groups in pitch processing. These findings uncover for the first time that pitch patterns in speech and music are mentally represented in a similar manner in autistic and non-autistic individuals, through domain-general top-down mechanisms.

5. High rates of donor site healing using quadriceps tendon for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: A case series

Abstract Purpose To investigate the healing of the quadriceps tendon donor site after partial thickness graft harvesting through ultrasound imaging at a short‐term follow‐up of 6‐month following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) and to investigate the clinical outcomes. Methods Between March 2019 and August 2020, 61 knees were retrospectively included in this study. Intraoperatively, the length, width and thickness of the harvested QT graft were measured. At a 6‐month follow‐up, patients were assessed by one of five radiologists, following the same protocol to calculate the defect volume, and patients performed a self‐evaluation of pain on the Visual Analogue Scale, International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) and the Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Scores (KOOS). Results Intraoperatively, the QT grafts had a volume of 4635.4 ± 912.5 mm3. Postoperatively, ultrasound was performed at 6.5 ± 0.7 months, and the defect volume was 323.3 ± 389.2 mm3, representing a healing rate of 93% ± 9% of the donor site. At a minimum 6‐month follow‐up, IKDC was 61.6 ± 16 and KOOS was 70.2 ± 16.6. Age was significantly associated with the healing rate (β: −0.005; p = 0.032). Conclusion At 6 months follow‐up, the defect size of the QT donor site had healed by 93 ± 9% leaving a mean defect volume of 323.3 mm3 according to ultrasound measurements. This suggests that the QT has a high capacity for healing after graft harvesting, with 10 patients reaching full defect closure 6 months after surgery. The clinical relevance of these findings is that the quadriceps tendon donor site has high rates of healing, but surgeons should be aware of lower healing rates in older patients. Introduction: PRP is gaining increasing interest for pain relief and improvement of joint function in patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) but practices and results remain heterogeneous limiting its adoption as standard of care. Current international recommendations are to collect real-life evidence of efficacy with a systematic monitoring of PRP quality and patients' outcomes. We aimed to analyze the response of patients presenting KOA and treated with standardized PRP injection in routine care. We also investigated the potential contributing factors including patient's phenotype and PRP characteristics. Methods: Patients with symptomatic KOA and that failed first-line therapy received a single injection of a qualified PRP prepared using medical devices allowing to recover a high/very high volume of very pure PRP. Visual analogue scale (VAS) and Western Ontario and McMaster Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) score were recorded at baseline and during 18 months follow-up. Results: 431 patients had available follow-up data at 3 months, 291 at 6 months, 137 at 12 months and 44 at 18 months. 7. Listening Behaviors and Musical Coordination in Collective Free Improvisation

While empirical studies on joint music-making have shed light on many aspects of ensemble performance in the past few decades, the role of auditory attention in such a context has remained strikingly understudied. We draw here on a self-annotation methodology to investigate musicians’ listening behaviors in freely improvised performances. Six trios of professional musicians were asked to freely improvise in a recording studio, hearing each other only through headphones. While they were playing, the loudness of each musician as sent to the other two musicians’ headphones was covertly increased/decreased during random periods of time in order to enhance its relative saliency within the musical scene. Immediately after each improvisation, musicians were asked to listen to the improvisation that they had just performed and to continuously indicate, using a specific application, where their listening focus was as they were performing. The results demonstrated that during periods of loudness manipulation, musicians’ attention was significantly drawn to the musician who had been made more salient. Two follow-up studies then investigated the extent to which joint auditory attention correlated with perceived togetherness, as well as whether improvisers’ auditory attention during the performance aligned with that of external listeners attending to the recording of the performance. Taken together, our results suggest that, beyond the effects of saliency, musicians also tend to strategically adapt their listening behavior to the specificities of the interactional context and that musicians’ collective listening behaviors have an impact on the performance, both at an acoustic level and at a perceptual level. By relying on attentional patterns that dynamically emerged from complex, ecological musical interactions, our studies provide a first attempt at assessing the effects of auditory attention on coordination and contribute to establishing sonic interactions as a promising setting for the study of the effects of joint attention.

The steadily increasing luminosity of the LHC requires an upgrade with high-rate and high-resolution detector technology for the inner end cap of the ATLAS muon spectrometer: the New Small Wheels (NSW). In order to achieve the goal of precision tracking at a hit rate of about 15 kHz/cm$^2$ at the inner radius of the NSW, large area Micromegas quadruplets with 100\,\microns spatial resolution per plane have been produced. % IRFU, from the CEA research center of Saclay, is responsible for the production and validation of LM1 Micromegas modules. The construction, production, qualification and validation of the largest Micromegas detectors ever built are reported here. 9. Sound context modulates perceived vocal emotion

Many animal vocalizations contain nonlinear acoustic phenomena as a consequence of physiological arousal. In humans, nonlinear features are processed early in the auditory system, and are used to efficiently detect alarm calls and other urgent signals. Yet, high-level emotional and semantic contextual factors likely guide the perception and evaluation of roughness features in vocal sounds. Here we examined the relationship between perceived vocal arousal and auditory context. We presented listeners with nonverbal vocalizations (yells of a single vowel) at varying levels of portrayed vocal arousal, in two musical contexts (clean guitar, distorted guitar) and one non-musical context (modulated noise). As predicted, vocalizations with higher levels of portrayed vocal arousal were judged as more negative and more emotionally aroused than the same voices produced with low vocal arousal. Moreover, both the perceived valence and emotional arousal of vocalizations were significantly affected by both musical and non-musical contexts. These results show the importance of auditory context in judging emotional arousal and valence in voices and music, and suggest that nonlinear features in music are processed similarly to communicative vocal signals.

Non-uniform temporal weights (TWs) are often reported regarding the perceptual evaluation of dynamic auditory and visual information, such as perceptual judgments of the overall intensity of time-varying stimuli. In particular, primacy effects, i.e., a stronger influence of early compared to later stimulus information on the perceptual decision, have been observed across a large number of studies. Yet, it is not clear whether these non-uniform patterns of TWs result from sensory or attentional processes that coincidentally produce similar time-courses, or whether they reflect the common signature of supra-modal and subject-specific decision-making processes. The present study addresses the hypothesis that TWs in loudness (perceived auditory intensity) and brightness (perceived visual intensity) judgments result from a common supramodal evidence-integration process. In Experiment 1, we compared TWs for loudness and brightness judgments in the same participants, with task difficulty matched individually. The observed average temporal weighting profiles differed substantially between the two modalities. In Experiment 2, we assessed the additional contribution of modality-specific sensory and attentional processes to the observed differences between TWs by measuring intensity resolution at different temporal positions in the auditory and visual stimuli. We observed a significantly different dependence of sensitivity on temporal position in the two modalities, but these sensitivity differences only partially accounted for the temporal weighting differences observed in Experiment 1. The collective findings indicate that the TWs observed for loudness and brightness judgments cannot be attributed to a supramodal evidence-integration process alone. Instead, our results suggest that both sensory and decision-making processes shape patterns of TWs.

Superconducting (SC) tokamak JT-60SA plays an essential role in fusion research and development by supporting and complementing the ITER project, providing directions to the DEMO design activity and fostering next generation scientists and engineers. Since the short circuit incident at the terminal joints of equilibrium field coil #1 during the integrated commissioning (IC) in March 2021, both EU and JA implementing agencies (IAs) have examined how to ensure safe operation of JT-60SA by mitigating the risk of possible discharge occurrence inside the cryostat. Based on the experience of the global Paschen tests, the IAs have established a strategy of risk mitigation measures, which is a combination of (i) reinforcement of insulation, (ii) avoiding unnecessary voltage application to the coil systems and (iii) immediate de-energization of the coils when deteriorated vacuum conditions are detected. Thanks to the considerable efforts of the Integrated Project Team members, the IC restarted in May 2023. After confirmation of the SC state of the coil systems (TF, EF and CS), the coil energization test and the plasma operation phase 1 (OP-1) started. The first plasma was successfully achieved on 23 October 2023 with a limited value of voltage and current applied to the coils. The plasma configuration control was also confirmed with low plasma current and low auxiliary heating power conditions. Based on the IO–F4E–QST collaboration, activities of JT-60SA have been shared with the IO and provided an important lesson for ITER assembly and commissioning, and will provide an outstanding contribution to fusion research at large. After OP-1, maintenance & enhancement phase 1 (M/E-1) starts from January 2024, in which in-vessel components are installed, and heating and diagnostic systems are extensively upgraded to allow a high power heating experiment planned in OP-2. In order to make the best use of JT-60SA, a newly organized JT-60SA experiment team will refine the research plan for the future high heating power operation phase.

12. Effect of Pitch on the Asymmetry in Global Loudness Between Rising- and Falling-Intensity Sounds

The global loudness of a varying intensity sound is greater when the intensity increases than when it decreases. This global loudness asymmetry was found to be larger for pure tones than for broadband noises. In this study, our aim was to determine whether this difference between pure tones and noises is due to the difference in bandwidth between sounds or to the difference in the strength of the sensation of pitch. The loudness asymmetry was measured for broadband and for narrow-band signals that do or do not elicit a sensation of pitch. The asymmetry was greater for sounds that elicit a sensation of pitch whatever their bandwidth. The loudness model for time varying sounds [1] predicted well the asymmetry for the broadband noise that does not elicit a sensation of pitch and for a multi-tonal sound. For the other sounds the asymmetry was greater than predicted. It is known that loudness and pitch interact. The difference in asymmetry between sounds that elicit pitch and sounds that do not elicit pitch might be due to this interaction.

Some theoretical aspects are presented about the relationship between the classic techniques of MANOVA and Biplot, which are the basis of the MANOVA - Biplot graph. Applying this technique to a set of data concerning to the uses of the land in the three major regions defined by Ecuador, their differences are investigated in order to achieve a synthetic characterization that can be used to compare them statistically and to improve appropriately the decision process. The eastern region is characterized by the use of its soil predominantly in mountains, natural and artificial forests, while the coastal region by permanent crops, transients and fallows, and the region of the sierra by the remaining pastures, breaks, barren lands and others. An illustration of the results is presented that shows the great value of synthesis that the proposed statistical technique has, including the R code that produces it.

19. A large-scale optical-near infrared survey for brown dwarfs and very low-mass stars in the Orion OB1 association

We report the initial results of a large-scale optical-near infrared survey to extend the known young population of the entire Orion star-forming region down to the substellar domain. Using deep optical I-band photometry and data from the 2MASS survey, we selected candidates across ~14.8 deg^2 in the ~8 Myr old Ori OB1a subassociation and over ~6.7 deg^2 in the Ori OB1b subassociation (age ~3), with completeness down to 0.05Mo and 0.072Mo respectively. We obtained low resolution optical spectra for a subsample of 4 candidates in Ori OB1a and 26 in Ori OB1b; as a result we confirmed 3 new members in Ori OB1a, one of which is substellar, and 19 new members in Ori OB1b, out of which 7 are at the substellar limit and 5 are substellar. We looked into the presence of accretion signatures by measuring the strength of the Ha line in emission. Accordingly, we classified the new members as having Classical T-Tauri star (CTTS) or Weak Lined T Tauri star-like (WTTS) nature. We found that all the new members confirmed in Ori OB1a are WTTSs, while 39 +25/-22 % of the new members in Ori OB1b exhibit CTTS-like behavior, suggestive of ongoing accretion from a circum(sub)stellar disk. Additionally we found that none of the members confirmed in OB1a show near-IR color excess while 38 +26/-21 % of OB1b members show H-K color excess. These results are consistent with recent findings for low mass young stars in Orion OB1. The similarity in CTTS-like properties and near-IR excess across the substellar boundary gives support to the idea of a common formation mechanism for low mass stars and at least the most massive brown dwarfs. Finally, we remark the discovery of two new members classified as CTTSs, both exhibiting W(Ha) < -140 A, suggesting significant ongoing accretion., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomical Journal

Massless flows from the coset model su(2)_k+1 \otimes su(2)_k /su(2)_2k+1 to the minimal model M_k+2 are studied from the viewpoint of form factors. These flows include in particular the flow from the Tricritical Ising model to the Ising model. By analogy with the magnetization operator in the flow TIM -> IM, we construct all form factors of an operator that flows to \Phi_1,2 in the IR. We make a numerical estimation of the difference of conformal weights between the UV and the IR thanks to the \Delta-sum rule; the results are consistent with the conformal weight of the operator \Phi_2,2 in the UV. By analogy with the energy operator in the flow TIM -> IM, we construct all form factors of an operator that flows to \Phi_2,1. We study the boundary correlation functions in Liouville theory and in solvable statistical models of 2D quantum gravity. In Liouville theory we derive functional identities for all fundamental boundary structure constants, similar to the one obtained for the boundary two-point function by Fateev, Zamolodchikov and Zamolodchikov. All these functional identities can be written as difference equations with respect to one of the boundary parameters. Then we switch to the microscopic realization of 2D quantum gravity as a height model on a dynamically triangulated disc and consider the boundary correlation functions of electric, magnetic and twist operators. By cutting open the sum over surfaces along a domain wall, we derive difference equations identical to those obtained in Liouville theory. Purpose: The purpose of this article is to explore how information and communication technologies have affected the way in which research groups are connected in their professional setting. It also analyses the techniques of interaction and cooperation of research groups, the exploration of information and the gateway to information, as well as the main tendencies and variations that researchers have observed during the last years. Design/methodology/approach: A survey was proposed to 305 scholars from different areas observing 159 variable responses. In order to complement and correctly interpret the information gathered within the survey, selected researchers were interviewed, and some of their opinions are reported in this work. Findings: Researchers see how their scientific networks expand thanks to digital tools, establishing professional relationships with other researchers. Moreover, researchers want to increase the amount of their scientific collaboration but they also need analogical meetings with others researchers, where face-to-face relations can accomplish the lack of this in digital communication. Originality: The dominance of tools used in scientific network activity is mixed, composed of analogical and digital ones. Researchers recognize the primary role assumed by digital practices in their work, increasing the quantity and the quality of it thanks to the efficiency and the access to information from different parts of the world. Social implication: Digital transformation has modified the research practices of researchers, from communication among them to the management of data. This new context of professional relations opens innovative implications and approaches for sharing knowledge between researchers and international collaborations.

In this work we propose an exact microscopic description of maximally symmetric branes in a Euclidean $AdS_3$ background. As shown by Bachas and Petropoulos, the most important such branes are localized along a Euclidean $AdS_2 \subset AdS_3$. We provide explicit formulas for the coupling of closed strings to such branes (boundary states) and for the spectral density of open strings. The latter is computed in two different ways first in terms of the open string reflection amplitude and then also from the boundary states by world-sheet duality. This gives rise to an important Cardy type consistency check. All the results are compared in detail with the geometrical picture. The purpose of this short note is to announce results that amount to a verification of the bootstrap for Liouville theory in the generic case under certain assumptions concerning existence and properties of fusion transformations. Under these assumptions one may characterize the fusion and braiding coefficients as solutions of a system of functional equations that follows from the combination of consistency requirements and known results. This system of equations has a unique solution for irrational central charge c>25. The solution is constructed by solving the Clebsch-Gordan problem for a certain continuous series of quantum group representations and constructing the associated Racah-coefficients. Empirical research, already quite infrequent in fundamental research on radicalization, is even more limited when it comes to intervention. In addition, a modest amount of attention has been paid to the experience and everyday practice of practitioners involved in prevention of radicalization interventions in the literature. To fill this gap, the International Center for the Prevention of Crime (ICPC) conducted an international study of front-line practitioners in the prevention of radicalization to pay particular attention to their practical experience and identify key issues they faced. This information was obtained from interviews with 90 experts and front-line practitioners from 27 countries in North America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania. This article will present some of the key findings from this study, namely the factors identified by first-line practitioners as facilitating the successful implementation of prevention of violent radicalization interventions.

The approximate post-Newtonian gravitational field might be used in the problem of initial conditions for the numerical evolution of binary black-hole space-times. On the other hand we recover the Damour-Deruelle 2.5PN equations of motion of compact binary systems. Over the past few years, the field of visual social cognition and face processing has been dramatically impacted by a series of data-driven studies employing computer-graphics tools to synthesize arbitrary meaningful facial expressions. In the auditory modality, reverse correlation is traditionally used to characterize sensory processing at the level of spectral or spectro-temporal stimulus properties, but not higher-level cognitive processing of e.g. words, sentences or music, by lack of tools able to manipulate the stimulus dimensions that are relevant for these processes. Here, we present an open-source audio-transformation toolbox, called CLEESE, able to systematically randomize the prosody/melody of existing speech and music recordings. CLEESE works by cutting recordings in small successive time segments (e.g. every successive 100 milliseconds in a spoken utterance), and applying a random parametric transformation of each segment's pitch, duration or amplitude, using a new Python-language implementation of the phase-vocoder digital audio technique. We present here two applications of the tool to generate stimuli for studying intonation processing of interrogative vs declarative speech, and rhythm processing of sung melodies.

To limit corrosion of the steels in contact with liquid metal (Pb or Pb-Bi), both different solutions based on the presence of alumina at the surface of the steels were selected: 2 Alumina-Forming Austenitic (AFA) steels and the 15-15 Ti steel coated by alumina layer. These technical options to mitigate corrosion by lead or Pb-Bi were investigated in terms of mechanical performances in liquid lead or liquid Pb-Bi. So the liquid metal embrittlement (LME) sensitivity of the different materials selected for their good corrosion resistance was evaluated by tensile tests or small punch tests carried out in presence of liquid metal, and by post-mortem analysis of the cracking and of the fracture surfaces. No LME sensitivity for the tested conditions has been observed for the Al2O3 coated 15-15Ti steel and for the two AFA steels (16Ni-14Cr-2.5Al-2.5Mn-1Nb), one without and one with 2% wt.% W and 0.02% wt.% Y in their as received state. But a 650 °C thermal aging promotes modifications of the microstructure specially precipitations and then LME sensitivity of the AFA steels, according the nature of the precipitation.

42. An Integrative Model Accounting for the Symptom Cluster Triggered After an Acoustic Shock

Acoustic shocks and traumas sometimes result in a cluster of debilitating symptoms, including tinnitus, hyperacusis, ear fullness and tension, dizziness, and pain in and outside the ear. The mechanisms underlying this large variety of symptoms remain elusive. In this article, we elaborate on the hypothesis that the tensor tympani muscle (TTM), the trigeminal nerve (TGN), and the trigeminal cervical complex (TCC) play a central role in generating these symptoms. We argue that TTM overuse (due to the acoustic shock), TTM overload (due to muscle tension), and ultimately, TTM injury (due to hypoxia and “energy crisis”) lead to inflammation, thereby activating the TGN, TCC, and cortex. The TCC is a crossroad structure integrating sensory inputs coming from the head–neck complex (including the middle ear) and projecting back to it. The multimodal integration of the TCC may then account for referred pain outside the ear when the middle ear is inflamed and activates the TGN. We believe that our model proposes a synthetic and explanatory framework to explain the phenomena occurring postacoustic shock and potentially also after other nonauditory causes. Indeed, due to the bidirectional properties of the TCC, musculoskeletal disorders in the region of the head–neck complex, including neck injury due to whiplash or temporomandibular disorders, may impact the middle ear, thereby leading to otic symptoms. This previously unavailable model type is experimentally testable and must be taken as a starting point for identifying the mechanisms responsible for this particular subtype of tinnitus and its associated symptoms.

43. Short Telomere Length Is Related to Limitations in Physical Function in Elderly European Adults

The present study aims to explore the potential influence of leucocyte telomere length (LTL) on both a single indicator and a composite construct of physical functioning in a large European population of elderly men and women across diverse geographical locations. A total of 1,221 adults (65–79 years) were recruited from five European countries within the framework of NU-AGE study. The physical functioning construct was based on the 36-item Short Form Health Survey. Handgrip strength was used as a single indicator of muscle function and LTL was assessed using quantitative real-time PCR. Women had significantly longer (p < 0.05) LTL than men. Participants in Poland had significantly shorter LTL than in the other study centers, whereas participants in the Netherlands had significantly longer LTL than most of the other centers (p < 0.01). An analysis of LTL as a continuous outcome against physical functioning by using linear models revealed inconsistent findings. In contrast, based on an analysis of contrasting telomere lengths (first vs. fifth quintile of LTL), a significant odds ratio (OR) of 1.7 (95% CI: 1.1 – 2.6; p < 0.05) of having functional limitation was observed in those belonging to the first LTL quintile compared to the fifth. Interestingly, having the shortest LTL was still related to a higher likelihood of having physical limitation when compared to all remaining quintiles (OR: 1.5, 95% CI: 1.1 – 2.1; p < 0.05), even after adjustment by study center, age, sex, and overweight status. Collectively, our findings suggest that short LTL is an independent risk factor that accounts for functional decline in elderly European populations. The influence of LTL on functional limitation seems driven by the detrimental effect of having short telomeres rather than reflecting a linear dose-response relationship.

This study reports the case of an acoustic shock injury (ASI), which did not result in a significant hearing loss, but was followed by manifold chronic symptoms both within (tinnitus, otalgia, tingling in the ear, tension in the ear, and red tympanum) and outside the ears (blocked nose, pain in the neck/temporal region). We suggest that these symptoms may result from a loop involving injury to middle ear muscles, peripheral inflammatory processes, activation and sensitization of the trigeminal nerve, the autonomic nervous system, and central feedbacks. The pathophysiology of this ASI is reminiscent of that observed in post-traumatic trigeminal-autonomic cephalalgia. This framework opens new and promising perspectives on the understanding and medical management of ASI.

La confianza del consumidor es un indicador económico que mide el grado de optimismo que los consumidores sienten sobre el estado general de la economía y sobre su situación financiera personal. En este trabajo se estudian y proponen metodologías para la construcción de algunos de los indicadores de temas socio-económicos más conocidos, puesto que en la actualidad, el país no posee instrumentos de medición que recojan de manera continua la opinión de la población sobre el tema. Basados en la elaboración de un marco muestral sobre la IV Encuesta Nacional de Presupuestos Familiares, se planificaron y tomaron tres muestras en el transcurso del año 2012 y se analizan los resultados obtenidos, para el índice de confianza del consumidor, el índice de la situación económica actual, el índice de expectativas económicas y el indicador de confianza económica, todos los cuales resultaron relativamente elevados, es decir, por encima de 50/100.

We discuss a situation in which, once a logit model is fitted to the data in a contingency table, some factor levels are grouped. Generally, researchers reapply a logit model on the pooled data, however, this approach leads to the violation of the original distributional assumption, when the probabilities of success of the random variables of aggregation differ. In this paper we suggest an alternative procedure that operates under the unsaturated, multifactorial, binomial, logit model. Based on asymptotic theory and taking advantage of the decrease in the variance when the correct distributional assumption is made, the suggested procedure significantly improves the estimates, reduces the standard error, produces lower residuals and is less likely to reject the goodness of fit test on the model. We present the necessary theory, the results of an extensive simulation designed for this purpose, and the suggested procedure contrasted with the usual approach, through a complete numerical example.Se discute la situación en la que, una vez ajustado un modelo logit a los datos contenidos en una tabla de contingencia, se selecciona un factor cualquiera de los participantes y se agregan algunos de sus niveles. Generalmente los investigadores proceden a postular nuevamente un modelo logit sobre los datos agrupados, sin embargo, este proceder conduce a la violación del supuesto distribucional original, cuando las probabilidades de éxito de las variables aleatorias de la agregación, son disímiles. En este trabajo se sugiere un procedimiento alternativo que opera en el marco del modelo logit binomial no saturado, multifactorial. Con base en la teoría asintótica y aprovechando la disminución en la varianza cuando se postula el modelo distribucional correcto, el procedimiento sugerido mejora apreciablemente las estimaciones, reduce el error estándar, produce valores residuales más cercanos al cero y menores probabilidades de rechazo en la prueba de bondad del ajuste del modelo. Sustentan tales afirmaciones tanto los desarrollos teóricos necesarios, como los resultados de una extensa simulación diseñada al efecto. También se expone el procedimiento sugerido contrastado con el habitual, mediante un ejemplo numérico completo.

Como parte de la caracterización en el “ estudio de impacto ambiental del proyecto de expansión de la refinería el Palito”, en el componente social se realizó una investigación de línea base socioeconómica con la finalidad de adquirir un conocimiento actualizado del proceso social que se vive en el área de influencia del proyecto. entre estos estudios, destaca la exploración cualitativa de las tendencias sociales –el tema de este ensayo– con la aplicación de la herramienta metodológica de análisis estructural en el marco de la teoría prospectiva. La investigación se fundamenta en la identificación y análisis del sistema de variables que describen la actual situación social dentro de las comunidades que habitan el área de influencia del proyecto, así como su dinámica. Las variables claves del estudio fueron identificadas sobre la base de los resultados de la encuesta de hogares por muestreo realizado en la zona y la elaboración de una matriz de acciones, procesos e impactos. su procesamiento y la aplicación del análisis estructural fue realizado sobre los resultados del proceso de consultas a representantes de las comunidades.
