Abstract

Magnetic nanoparticles play a crucial role in different fields such as biomedicine or information and quantum technologies. These applications require nanoparticles with a single, well-defined energy minimum, free of metastable states, and characterized by narrow switching field distributions. Here, we demonstrate that high-transition-temperature nanoSQUIDs can be successfully applied to the characterization of individual nanodiscs hosting magnetic vortices. We present measurements performed under varying temperature and external magnetic field, revealing signatures of ubiquitous, multiple metastable configurations. We also demonstrate that metastability can be reduced by introducing an intended asymmetry. NanoSQUID measurements can be applied to optimize the fabrication of on-demand spin-texture states, such as degenerated vortices or particles with fixed circulation and deterministic and narrow switching probabilities.

Abstract

We obtain a compact Sobolev embedding for $H$-invariant functions in compact metric-measure spaces, where $H$ is a subgroup of the measure preserving bijections. In Riemannian manifolds, $H$ is a subgroup of the volume preserving diffeomorphisms: a compact embedding for the critical exponents follows. The results can be viewed as an extension of Sobolev embeddings of functions invariant under isometries in compact manifolds.

16. Benchmarking parallelism in FaaS platforms

Abstract

Serverless computing has seen a myriad of work exploring its potential. Some systems tackle Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) properties on automatic elasticity and scale to run highly-parallel computing jobs. However, they focus on specific platforms and convey that their ideas can be extrapolated to any FaaS runtime. An important question arises: do all FaaS platforms fit parallel computations? In this paper, we argue that not all of them provide the necessary means to host highly-parallel applications. To validate our hypothesis, we create a comparative framework and categorize the architectures of four cloud FaaS offerings, emphasizing parallel performance. We attest and extend this description with an empirical experiment that consists in plotting in deep detail the evolution of a parallel computing job on each service. The analysis of our results evinces that FaaS is not inherently good for parallel computations and architectural differences across platforms are decisive to categorize their performance. A key insight is the importance of virtualization technologies and the scheduling approach of FaaS platforms. Parallelism improves with lighter virtualization and proactive scheduling due to finer resource allocation and faster elasticity. This causes some platforms like AWS and IBM to perform well for highly-parallel computations, while others such as Azure present difficulties to achieve the required parallelism degree. Consequently, the information in this paper becomes of special interest to help users choose the most adequate infrastructure for their parallel applications.

Abstract

International audience; Objectives - Severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria (SM) involves cytoadhesion of parasitized red blood cells, mediated by P. falciparum erythrocyte membrane protein 1, which is encoded by var genes. Expression of var gene group A and B or encoding domain cassettes DC4, DC5, DC8 and DC13 has been implicated in SM in African children, but no data exist in the context of imported malaria. The aim of this study was to investigate var gene expression linked to clinical presentation and host factors in SM imported into France. Methods - Expression level of var gene groups A, B, C, var1, var2csa, var3 and var genes encoding DC4, DC5, DC8 and DC13 was measured by quantitative RT-PCR and expressed in transcript units. Seventy SM and 48 uncomplicated malaria (UM) P. falciparum cases were analysed according to disease severity, epidemiological characteristics (migrants or travellers) and anti-P. falciparum antibodies. 42. A new isoetalean microsporophyll from the latest albian of northeastern Spain: Diversity in the development and dispersal strategies of microspores

Abstract

In this paper well-preserved isoetalean microsporophyll, containing in situ microspores, is described from the uppermost part of the Utrillas Formation (latest Albian) in Teruel Province, northeastern Spain. Similar but dispersed microspores were described previously as Peromonolites. Fossil plant impressions and compressions including the sporophyll lamina and microsporangium are referred to the fossil genus Isoetites. Although Isoetes-like megafossil remains, often with in situ or associated megaspores, are known from quite a few Cretaceous sites, and dispersed microspores are known, the presence of intact microsporangia is rare. Herein we suggest that microsporangia may have dispersed in masses, possibly representing a new unknown strategy in microspore dispersal in this group of plants.

Abstract

Plant system engineering (PSE) is a method of efficiently integrating machinery and human labor. Studies in PSE have been mainly concerned with production facilities rather than teaching facilities. Conventional simulation methods assume that the product moves through the workstations. In the more complex situation of the training workshop, both the student and the artifact being produced move through the workstations. Hence a training workshop requires a fundamentally different way of approaching the simulation. Also, the waiting time experience of the students needs consideration, from a teaching perspective. We adapted the system simulation methodology by including multiple work‐streams through the workshop, and by adding decision stages into the model. The method was applied to a training workshop. The results identified specific changes in the way the students were assigned to machines, and the number of different types of machines, that would improve the operation of the facility. The improvement measures were reduction in waiting time by students, and greater machine utilization. Multiple different class sizes were explored. The approach is broadly applicable to other situations where the people move through a facility along with a partially completed physical product. This work develops an approach to optimize the performance of a manufacturing system, for the unusual class situations where the product moving through the simulation is not merely a physical product as in conventional simulation approaches, but rather the combination of people (students) and their partially completed physical product.
