The current distribution patterns of many Mediterranean species are often a consequence of large and impactful past geoclimatic events, such as the Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC) and the Quaternary glacial cycles. Cicadas are flying insects with poor dispersal ability, which have experienced intense local differentiation in the Mediterranean, where the genus Tettigettalna has surfaced as a biogeographic model. The genus includes 10 species with species-specific calling songs but identical morphology. All Tettigettalna species are restricted to Southern Iberia, with the exception of T. estrellae (northwest Iberia), the widespread T. argentata (mainly Iberia, France and Italy), and T. afroamissa (Morocco). With an expanded genetic dataset involving nuclear (EF1α) and mitochondrial (5′ and 3′ COI and ATP) loci, we reconstructed the phylogeny of the genus and estimated divergence dates for Tettigettalna species under a Bayesian framework. Phylogeny with the new mitochondrial dataset was in agreement with previous studies, whereas the nuclear EF1α supported T. josei and T. afroamissa as monophyletic clades but lacked resolution to resolve the remaining taxa. Some sister taxa share mitochondrial haplotypes, hinting for incomplete lineage sorting. Estimates of divergence time settled T. josei as the earliest diverging lineage, likely as a pre- or early-MSC event. As for the origin of T. afroamissa in Morocco, though time estimates could not entirely rule out post-MSC dispersal, the most likely scenario points to isolation of African Tettigettalna after the reopening of the strait of Gibraltar. The Pleistocene glaciations that followed likely impacted on the diversification of the remaining species of the genus in southern Iberia refugia.

In recent years, the need to include sustainability in heritage conservation has arisen. The awareness of toxicological risk issues for the conservator and for the environment, as well as the search for a substantial improvement in the quality of life, has progressively allowed the development of research lines in Conservation and Restoration of cultural property, focused on the reduction of toxicity parameters. However, there are obstacles that prevent the implementation of a sustainable methodology in the field of conservation and restoration. One of the main problems is the scarce published works of evaluation and critical analysis of green and sustainable products and methodologies available for cleaning, support reintegration, consolidation and protection operations within the application of Cultural Heritage. One of the most sustainable cleaning methodologies for stone supports is the laser technique system. There are numerous studies and previous works on the use of the applicability of this technology in stone support. However, in many occasions, these systems are discarded due to their cost, the belief that these systems alter the stone, and the lack of specialized personnel. This paper shows the comparison of two intervention methodologies designed for the cleaning of the Gothic Staircase of the Palau de la Generalitat de Valencia using laser technology and aqueous systems based on ammonium carbonate. For the feasibility study of both, the most common suitability criteria have been taken into account, such as the assessment of the alteration of the support, the presence of residues on the treated support, etc., but also the factors of sustainability and occupational risk prevention have been included, such as the toxicity of the products, waste management and personnel protection. With all this, the aim is to show an example of how sustainability factors are fundamental when designing an intervention protocol, and how they are a variable to be taken into account when designing restoration projects.

This is the report of a practical case regarding the removal of Paraloid® B72 coatings from Roman frescoes. During the archaeological excavation, the paintings had been consolidated with the application of cotton gauze with an acrylic resin. The article presents the results regarding the effectiveness of the removal of the acrylic resin and the analytical assessment of the possible presence of residues on the work of art. The removal of the acrylic resin was carried out with an aqueous gelled system emulsified with only 10% solvent.
