Abstract

We obtain a compact Sobolev embedding for $H$-invariant functions in compact metric-measure spaces, where $H$ is a subgroup of the measure preserving bijections. In Riemannian manifolds, $H$ is a subgroup of the volume preserving diffeomorphisms: a compact embedding for the critical exponents follows. The results can be viewed as an extension of Sobolev embeddings of functions invariant under isometries in compact manifolds.

Abstract

International audience; Objectives - Severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria (SM) involves cytoadhesion of parasitized red blood cells, mediated by P. falciparum erythrocyte membrane protein 1, which is encoded by var genes. Expression of var gene group A and B or encoding domain cassettes DC4, DC5, DC8 and DC13 has been implicated in SM in African children, but no data exist in the context of imported malaria. The aim of this study was to investigate var gene expression linked to clinical presentation and host factors in SM imported into France. Methods - Expression level of var gene groups A, B, C, var1, var2csa, var3 and var genes encoding DC4, DC5, DC8 and DC13 was measured by quantitative RT-PCR and expressed in transcript units. Seventy SM and 48 uncomplicated malaria (UM) P. falciparum cases were analysed according to disease severity, epidemiological characteristics (migrants or travellers) and anti-P. falciparum antibodies. 38. A new isoetalean microsporophyll from the latest albian of northeastern Spain: Diversity in the development and dispersal strategies of microspores

Abstract

In this paper well-preserved isoetalean microsporophyll, containing in situ microspores, is described from the uppermost part of the Utrillas Formation (latest Albian) in Teruel Province, northeastern Spain. Similar but dispersed microspores were described previously as Peromonolites. Fossil plant impressions and compressions including the sporophyll lamina and microsporangium are referred to the fossil genus Isoetites. Although Isoetes-like megafossil remains, often with in situ or associated megaspores, are known from quite a few Cretaceous sites, and dispersed microspores are known, the presence of intact microsporangia is rare. Herein we suggest that microsporangia may have dispersed in masses, possibly representing a new unknown strategy in microspore dispersal in this group of plants.

Abstract

Plant system engineering (PSE) is a method of efficiently integrating machinery and human labor. Studies in PSE have been mainly concerned with production facilities rather than teaching facilities. Conventional simulation methods assume that the product moves through the workstations. In the more complex situation of the training workshop, both the student and the artifact being produced move through the workstations. Hence a training workshop requires a fundamentally different way of approaching the simulation. Also, the waiting time experience of the students needs consideration, from a teaching perspective. We adapted the system simulation methodology by including multiple work‐streams through the workshop, and by adding decision stages into the model. The method was applied to a training workshop. The results identified specific changes in the way the students were assigned to machines, and the number of different types of machines, that would improve the operation of the facility. The improvement measures were reduction in waiting time by students, and greater machine utilization. Multiple different class sizes were explored. The approach is broadly applicable to other situations where the people move through a facility along with a partially completed physical product. This work develops an approach to optimize the performance of a manufacturing system, for the unusual class situations where the product moving through the simulation is not merely a physical product as in conventional simulation approaches, but rather the combination of people (students) and their partially completed physical product. Abstract

Background Chloroquine (CQ) was the main malaria therapy worldwide from the 1940s until the 1990s. Following the emergence of CQ-resistant Plasmodium falciparum, most African countries discontinued the use of CQ, and now promote artemisinin-based combination therapy as the first-line treatment. This change was generally initiated during the last decade in West and Central Africa. The aim of this study is to describe the changes in CQ susceptibility in this African region, using travellers returning from this region as a sentinel system. Methods The study was conducted by the Malaria National Reference Centre, France. The database collated the pfcrtK76T molecular marker for CQ susceptibility and the in vitro response to CQ of parasites from travellers’ isolates returning from Senegal, Mali, Ivory Coast or Cameroon. As a proxy of drug pressure, data regarding CQ intake in febrile children were collated for the study period. Logistic regression models were used to detect trends in the proportions of CQ resistant isolates. Results A total of 2874 parasite isolates were genotyped between 2000–2011. The prevalence of the pfcrt76T mutant genotype significantly decreased for Senegal (from 78% to 47%), Ivory Coast (from 63% to 37%), Cameroon (from 90% to 59%) and remained stable for Mali. The geometric mean of the 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) of CQ in vitro susceptibility and the proportion of resistant isolates (defining resistance as an IC50 value > 100 nM) significantly decreased for Senegal (from 86 nM (59%) to 39 nM (25%)), Mali (from 84 nM (50%) to 51 nM (31%)), Ivory Coast (from 75 nM (59%) to 29 nM (16%)) and Cameroon (from 181 nM (75%) to 51 nM (37%)). Both analyses (molecular and in vitro susceptibility) were performed for the 2004–2011 period, after the four countries had officially discontinued CQ and showed an accelerated decline of the resistant isolates for the four countries. Meanwhile, CQ use among children significantly deceased in this region (fixed effects slope = −0.3, p -3). Conclusions An increase in CQ susceptibility following official withdrawal of the drug was observed in travellers returning from West and Central African countries. The same trends were observed for molecular and in vitro analysis between 2004-2011and they correlated to the decrease of the drug pressure.

Abstract

Objective: Mixed results have been reported of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) and their association with restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The current study examines whether multiple single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), covering the full genomic region of MMP2 and MMP3, were associated with restenosis in the GENDER study population.Methods and results: The GENetic DEterminants of Restenosis (GENDER) study enrolled 3104 consecutive patients after successful PCI. The primary endpoint was clinical restenosis, defined as target vessel revascularization (TVR), occurring in 9.8% of the patients. From the Hapmap database, 19 polymorphisms of MMP2 and 11 of MMP3 were selected. Furthermore, in a subpopulation, a genome-wide association analysis (GWA) was performed. No significant association was found with any of the investigated SNPs, including the previously reported 5A/6A polymorphism (rs3025058), with regard to TVR using single SNP analysis or haplotype analysis.Conclusion: We found no significant association of MMP2 or MMP3 with TVR with this SNP-broad gene approach. Although we did not test all the known polymorphisms of these genes, using tagging analyses we examined those SNPs covering all known haplotypes of MMP2 and MMP3 to conclude that these genes do not correlate with a genetic risk of coronary restenosis after successful PCI.

Abstract

This thesis examines the impact of genetic and epigenetic factors on several aspects of vascular disease. Part 1 addresses the influence of genetic variation in genes involved in the different processes that lead to the occurrence of adverse events after percutaneous coronary intervention, mainly restenosis after bare metal stent placement, but also late acquired stent malapposition after implantation of a drug-eluting stent. Part 2 discusses the role of a relatively new area of research, which we refer to as 'epigenetic epidemiology', in restenosis and other aspects of coronary heart disease. In this part we show that polymorphisms in genes encoding lysine acetyltransferases, which are able to modify chromatin structure to allow gene transcription, can influence restenosis and mortality from coronary heart disease in several large prospective follow-up studies.
