We investigate the properties of 232 optical spectroscopically selected groups from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey that overlap the XXL X-ray cluster survey. X-ray aperture flux measurements combined with GAMA group data provides the largest available sample of optical groups with detailed galaxy membership information and consistently measured X-ray fluxes and upper limits. 142 of these groups are divided into three subsets based on the relative strength of X-ray and optical emission, and we see a trend in galaxy properties between these subsets: X-ray overluminous groups contain a lower fraction of both blue and star forming galaxies compared with X-ray underluminous systems. X-ray overluminous groups also have a more dominant central galaxy, with a magnitude gap between first and second ranked galaxies on average 0.22 mag larger than in underluminous groups. The central galaxy in overluminous groups also lies closer to the centre of the group. We examine a number of other structural properties of our groups, such as axis ratio, velocity dispersion, and group crossing time and find trends with X-ray emission in some of these properties despite the high stochastic noise from the limited number of group galaxies. We attribute the trends we see to the evolutionary state of groups, with X-ray overluminous systems being more dynamically evolved than underluminous groups. The X-ray overluminous groups have had more time to develop a luminous intragroup medium, quench member galaxies, and build the mass of the central galaxy through mergers compared to underluminous groups. However, a minority of X-ray underluminous groups have properties that suggest them to be dynamically mature. The lack of hot gas in these systems cannot be accounted for by high star formation efficiency, suggesting that high gas entropy resulting from feedback is the likely cause of their weak X-ray emission., Comment: Accepted for Publication in A&A. 18 pages, 17 figures

The growth of brightest cluster galaxies is closely related to the properties of their host cluster. We present evidence for dry mergers as the dominant source of BCG mass growth at $z\lesssim1$ in the XXL 100 brightest cluster sample. We use the global red sequence, H$\alpha$ emission and mean star formation history to show that BCGs in the sample possess star formation levels comparable to field ellipticals of similar stellar mass and redshift. XXL 100 brightest clusters are less massive on average than those in other X-ray selected samples such as LoCuSS or HIFLUGCS. Few clusters in the sample display high central gas concentration, rendering inefficient the growth of BCGs via star formation resulting from the accretion of cool gas. Using measures of the relaxation state of their host clusters, we show that BCGs grow as relaxation proceeds. We find that the BCG stellar mass corresponds to a relatively constant fraction 1\%\ of the total cluster mass in relaxed systems. We also show that, following a cluster scale merger event, the BCG stellar mass lags behind the expected value from the M$_{cluster}$ - M$_{BCG}$ relation but subsequently accretes stellar mass via dry mergers as the BCG and cluster evolve towards a relaxed state., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figues

We present the XXL Survey, the largest XMM programme totaling some 6.9 Ms to date and involving an international consortium of roughly 100 members. The XXL Survey covers two extragalactic areas of 25 deg2 each at a point-source sensitivity of ~ 5E-15 erg/sec/cm2 in the [0.5-2] keV band (completeness limit). The survey's main goals are to provide constraints on the dark energy equation of state from the space-time distribution of clusters of galaxies and to serve as a pathfinder for future, wide-area X-ray missions. We review science objectives, including cluster studies, AGN evolution, and large-scale structure, that are being conducted with the support of approximately 30 follow-up programmes. We describe the 542 XMM observations along with the associated multi-lambda and numerical simulation programmes. We give a detailed account of the X-ray processing steps and describe innovative tools being developed for the cosmological analysis. The paper provides a thorough evaluation of the X-ray data, including quality controls, photon statistics, exposure and background maps, and sky coverage. Source catalogue construction and multi-lambda associations are briefly described. This material will be the basis for the calculation of the cluster and AGN selection functions, critical elements of the cosmological and science analyses. The XXL multi-lambda data set will have a unique lasting legacy value for cosmological and extragalactic studies and will serve as a calibration resource for future dark energy studies with clusters and other X-ray selected sources. With the present article, we release the XMM XXL photon and smoothed images along with the corresponding exposure maps. Context. The XXL Survey is the largest survey carried out by the XMM-Newton satellite and covers a total area of 50 square degrees distributed over two fields. It primarily aims at investigating the large-scale structures of the Universe using the distribution of galaxy clusters and active galactic nuclei as tracers of the matter distribution. Aims. This article presents the XXL bright cluster sample, a subsample of 100 galaxy clusters selected from the full XXL catalogue by setting a lower limit of $3\times 10^{-14}\,\mathrm{erg \,s^{-1}cm^{-2}}$ on the source flux within a 1$^{\prime}$ aperture. Methods. The selection function was estimated using a mixture of Monte Carlo simulations and analytical recipes that closely reproduce the source selection process. An extensive spectroscopic follow-up provided redshifts for 97 of the 100 clusters. We derived accurate X-ray parameters for all the sources. Scaling relations were self-consistently derived from the same sample in other publications of the series. On this basis, we study the number density, luminosity function, and spatial distribution of the sample. Results. The bright cluster sample consists of systems with masses between $M_{500}=7\times 10^{13}$ and $3\times 10^{14} M_\odot$, mostly located between $z=0.1$ and 0.5. The observed sky density of clusters is slightly below the predictions from the WMAP9 model, and significantly below the predictions from the Planck 2015 cosmology. In general, within the current uncertainties of the cluster mass calibration, models with higher values of $\sigma_8$ and/or $\Omega_m$ appear more difficult to accommodate. We provide tight constraints on the cluster differential luminosity function and find no hint of evolution out to $z\sim1$. This article is the second in a series in which we perform an extensive comparison of various galaxy-based cluster mass estimation techniques that utilise the positions, velocities and colours of galaxies. Our aim is to quantify the scatter, systematic bias and completeness of cluster masses derived from a diverse set of 25 galaxy-based methods using two contrasting mock galaxy catalogues based on a sophisticated halo occupation model and a semi-analytic model. Analysing 968 clusters, we find a wide range in the RMS errors in log M200c delivered by the different methods (0.18 to 1.08 dex, i.e., a factor of ~1.5 to 12), with abundance matching and richness methods providing the best results, irrespective of the input model assumptions. In addition, certain methods produce a significant number of catastrophic cases where the mass is under- or over-estimated by a factor greater than 10. Given the steeply falling high-mass end of the cluster mass function, we recommend that richness or abundance matching-based methods are used in conjunction with these methods as a sanity check for studies selecting high mass clusters. We see a stronger correlation of the recovered to input number of galaxies for both catalogues in comparison with the group/cluster mass, however, this does not guarantee that the correct member galaxies are being selected. We do not observe significantly higher scatter for either mock galaxy catalogues. Our results have implications for cosmological analyses that utilise the masses, richnesses, or abundances of clusters, which have different uncertainties when different methods are used., Comment: 25 pages, 19 figures, 7 tables. We present new, deep Chandra X-ray and Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope 610~MHz observations of the spiral-galaxy-rich compact group HCG 16, which we use to examine nuclear activity, star formation and the high luminosity X-ray binary populations in the major galaxies. We confirm the presence of obscured active nuclei in NGC 833 and NGC 835, and identify a previously unrecognized nuclear source in NGC 838. All three nuclei are variable on timescales of months to years, and for NGC 833 and NGC 835 this is most likely caused by changes in accretion rate. The deep Chandra observations allow us to detect for the first time an Fe-K$\alpha$ emission line in the spectrum of the Seyfert 2 nucleus of NGC 835. We find that NGC 838 and NGC 839 are both starburst-dominated systems, with only weak nuclear activity, in agreement with previous optical studies. We estimate the star formation rates in the two galaxies from their X-ray and radio emission, and compare these results with estimates from the infra-red and ultra-violet bands to confirm that star formation in both galaxies is probably declining after galaxy-wide starbursts were triggered ~400-500 Myr ago. We examine the physical properties of their galactic superwinds, and find that both have temperatures of ~0.8 keV. We use a combination of deep Chandra X-ray observations and radio continuum imaging to investigate the origin and current state of the intra-group medium in the spiral-rich compact group HCG 16. We confirm the presence of a faint ($L_{X,{\rm bolo}}$=1.87$^{+1.03}_{-0.66}$$\times$10$^{41}$ erg/s), low temperature (0.30$^{+0.07}_{-0.05}$ keV) intra-group medium (IGM) extending throughout the ACIS-S3 field of view, with a ridge linking the four original group members and extending to the southeast, as suggested by previous Rosat and XMM-Newton observations. This ridge contains 6.6$^{+3.9}_{-3.3}$$\times$10$^9$ solar masses of hot gas and is at least partly coincident with a large-scale HI tidal filament, indicating that the IGM in the inner part of the group is highly multi-phase. We present evidence that the group is not yet virialised, and show that gas has probably been transported from the starburst winds of NGC 838 and NGC 839 into the surrounding IGM. We study intergalactic medium (IGM) heating in a sample of five fossil galaxy groups by using their radio properties at 610 MHz and 1.4 GHz. The power by radio jets introducing mechanical heating for the sampled objects is not sufficient enough to suppress the cooling flow. Therefore, we discussed shock-, vortex heating, and conduction as alternative heating processes. Further, the 1.4 GHz and 610 MHz radio luminosities of fossil groups are compared to a sample of normal galaxy groups of the same radio brightest (BGGs), stellar mass, and total group stellar mass, quantified using the $K$-band luminosity. It appears that the fossil BGGs are under luminous at 1.4 GHz and 610 MHz for a given BGG stellar mass and luminosity, in comparison to a general population of the groups. In addition, we explore how the bolometric radio luminosity of fossil sample depends on clusters and groups characteristics. Using the HIghest X-ray FLUx Galaxy Cluster Sample (HIFLUGCS) as a control sample we found that the large-scale behaviours of fossil galaxy groups are consistent with their relaxed and virialised nature., Comment: 17 pages, 22 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

This paper is the first in a series in which we perform an extensive comparison of various galaxy-based cluster mass estimation techniques that utilise the positions, velocities and colours of galaxies. Our primary aim is to test the performance of these cluster mass estimation techniques on a diverse set of models that will increase in complexity. We begin by providing participating methods with data from a simple model that delivers idealised clusters, enabling us to quantify the underlying scatter intrinsic to these mass estimation techniques. The mock catalogue is based on a Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) model that assumes spherical Navarro, Frenk and White (NFW) haloes truncated at R_200, with no substructure nor colour segregation, and with isotropic, isothermal Maxwellian velocities. We find that, above 10^14 M_solar, recovered cluster masses are correlated with the true underlying cluster mass with an intrinsic scatter of typically a factor of two. Below 10^14 M_solar, the scatter rises as the number of member galaxies drops and rapidly approaches an order of magnitude. We find that richness-based methods deliver the lowest scatter, but it is not clear whether such accuracy may simply be the result of using an over-simplistic model to populate the galaxies in their haloes. Even when given the true cluster membership, large scatter is observed for the majority non-richness-based approaches, suggesting that mass reconstruction with a low number of dynamical tracers is inherently problematic., Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures, 5 tables. Mechanical feedback via Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) jets in the centres of galaxy groups and clusters is a crucial ingredient in current models of galaxy formation and cluster evolution. Jet feedback is believed to regulate gas cooling and thus star formation in the most massive galaxies, but a robust physical understanding of this feedback mode is currently lacking. The large collecting area, excellent spectral resolution and high spatial resolution of Athena+ will provide the breakthrough diagnostic ability necessary to develop this understanding, via: (1) the first kinematic measurements on relevant spatial scales of the hot gas in galaxy, group and cluster haloes as it absorbs the impact of AGN jets, and (2) vastly improved ability to map thermodynamic conditions on scales well-matched to the jets, lobes and gas disturbances produced by them. Athena+ will therefore determine for the first time how jet energy is dissipated and distributed in group and cluster gas, and how a feedback loop operates in group/cluster cores to regulate gas cooling and AGN fuelling. As the nodes of the cosmic web, clusters of galaxies trace the large-scale distribution of matter in the Universe. They are thus privileged sites in which to investigate the complex physics of structure formation. However, the complete story of how these structures grow, and how they dissipate the gravitational and non-thermal components of their energy budget over cosmic time, is still beyond our grasp. Fundamental questions such as How do hot diffuse baryons accrete and dynamically evolve in dark matter potentials? How and when was the energy that we observe in the ICM generated and distributed? Where and when are heavy elements produced and how are they circulated? are still unanswered. Most of the cluster baryons exists in the form of a diffuse, hot, metal-enriched plasma that radiates primarily in the X-ray band (the intracluster medium, ICM), allowing the X-ray observations of the evolving cluster population to provide a unique opportunity to address these topics. Athena+ with its large collecting area and unprecedented combination of high spectral and angular resolution offers the only way to make major advances in answering these questions. Athena+ will show how the baryonic gas evolves in the dark matter potential wells by studying the motions and turbulence in the ICM. Athena+ will be able to resolve the accreting region both spatially and spectroscopically, probing the true nature and physical state of the X-ray emitting plasma. A full appreciation of the role played by gas metallicity (Z), star-formation rate (SFR), and stellar mass is fundamental to understanding how galaxies form and evolve. The connections between these three parameters at different redshifts significantly affect galaxy evolution, and thus provide important constraints for galaxy evolution models. Using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-Data Release 7 (SDSS-DR7) and the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) surveys we study the relationships and dependencies between SFR, Z, and stellar mass, as well as the Fundamental Plane for star-forming galaxies. We combine both surveys using volume-limited samples up to a redshift of z ~ 0.36. The GAMA and SDSS surveys complement each other when analyzing the relationships between SFR, Mass and Z. We present evidence for SFR and metallicity evolution to z ~ 0.2. We study the dependencies between SFR, Mass, Z, and specific star-formation rate (SSFR) on the M-Z, M-SFR, M-SSFR, Z-SFR, and Z-SSFR relations, finding strong correlations between all. Based on those dependencies, we propose a simple model that allows us to explain the different behaviour observed between low and high mass galaxies. We study the luminosity gap, dm12, between the first and second ranked galaxies in a sample of 59 massive galaxy clusters, using data from the Hale Telescope, HST, Chandra, and Spitzer. We find that the dm12 distribution, p(dm12), is a declining function of dm12, to which we fitted a straight line: p(dm12) propto -(0.13+/-0.02)dm12. The fraction of clusters with "large" luminosity gaps is p(dm12>=1)=0.37+/-0.08, which represents a 3sigma excess over that obtained from Monte Carlo simulations of a Schechter function that matches the mean cluster galaxy luminosity function. We also identify four clusters with "extreme" luminosity gaps, dm12>=2, giving a fraction of p(dm12>=2)=0.07+0.05-0.03. More generally, large luminosity gap clusters are relatively homogeneous, with elliptical/disky brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), cuspy gas density profiles (i.e. strong cool cores), high concentrations, and low substructure fractions. In contrast, small luminosity gap clusters are heterogeneous, spanning the full range of boxy/elliptical/disky BCG morphologies, the full range of cool core strengths and dark matter concentrations, and have large substructure fractions. Taken together, these results imply that the amplitude of the luminosity gap is a function of both the formation epoch, and the recent infall history of the cluster. "BCG dominance" is therefore a phase that a cluster may evolve through, and is not an evolutionary "cul-de-sac". We also compare our results with semi-analytic model predictions based on the Millennium Simulation. None of the models are able to reproduce all of the observational results, underlining the inability of current models to match the empirical properties of BCGs. We identify the strength of AGN feedback and the efficiency with which cluster galaxies are replenished after they merge with the BCG in each model as possible causes of these discrepancies. We study the substructure statistics of a representative sample of galaxy clusters by means of two currently popular substructure characterisation methods, power ratios and centroid shifts. We use the 31 clusters from the REXCESS sample, compiled from the southern ROSAT All-Sky cluster survey REFLEX with a morphologically unbiased selection in X-ray luminosity and redshift, all of which have been reobserved with XMM-Newton. We investigate the uncertainties of the substructure parameters and examine the dependence of the results on projection effects, finding that the uncertainties of the parameters can be quite substantial. Thus while the quantification of the dynamical state of individual clusters with these parameters should be treated with extreme caution, these substructure measures provide powerful statistical tools to characterise trends of properties in large cluster samples. The centre shift parameter, w, is found to be more sensitive in general. For the REXCESS sample neither the occurence of substructure nor the presence of cool cores depends on cluster mass. There is a significant anti-correlation between the existence of substantial substructure and cool cores. The simulated clusters show on average larger substructure parameters than the observed clusters, a trend that is traced to the fact that cool regions are more pronounced in the simulated clusters, leading to stronger substructure measures in merging clusters and clusters with offset cores. Moreover, the frequency of cool regions is higher in the simulations than in the observations, implying that the description of the physical processes shaping cluster formation in the simulations requires further improvement., Comment: Mauscript submitted to Astronomy and Astrophysics, 20 figures

(Abridged) We examine the radial entropy distribution and its scaling using 31 nearby galaxy clusters from the Representative XMM-Newton Cluster Structure Survey (REXCESS). The entropy profiles are robustly measured at least out to R_1000 in all systems and out to R_500 in 13 systems. Compared to theoretical expectations, the observed distributions show a radial and mass-dependent excess entropy that is greater and extends to larger radii in lower mass systems. At R_500, the mass dependence and entropy excess are both negligible within the uncertainties. Mirroring this behaviour, the scaling of gas entropy is shallower than self-similar in the inner regions, but steepens with radius, becoming consistent with self-similar at R_500. The dispersion in scaled entropy in the inner regions is linked to the presence of cool cores and dynamical activity; at larger radii the dispersion decreases by a factor of two and the dichotomy between subsamples disappears. Parameterising the profiles with a power law plus constant model, there are two peaks in central entropy K_0; however, we cannot distinguish between a bimodal or a left-skewed distribution. The outer slopes are correlated with system temperature; their distribution is unimodal with a median value of 0.98. Renormalising the dimensionless entropy profiles by the gas mass fraction profile f_gas(< R), leads to a remarkable reduction in the scatter, implying that gas mass fraction variations with radius and mass are the cause of the observed entropy properties. We discuss a tentative scenario to explain the behaviour of the entropy and gas mass fraction in the REXCESS sample, in which extra heating and merger mixing maintains an elevated central entropy level in the majority of the population, and a smaller fraction of systems develops a cool core., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, A&A, in press. Disk galaxies in compact galaxy groups exhibit a remarkable shortfall of neutral hydrogen compared to both isolated spirals and spirals in more loose groups, but the origin of this HI deficiency remains unclear. Based on a sample of highly HI deficient compact galaxy groups, here updated to also include HCG 58 and HCG 93, we summarise the first results of a multi-wavelength campaign aimed at understanding the processes responsible for modifying the HI content of galaxy disks in these environments. While tidal stripping, ram pressure stripping by hot intragroup gas, and star-formation induced strangulation could individually be affecting the ISM in some of the group members, these processes each face specific difficulties in explaining the inferred deficiency of HI for the sample as a whole. A complete picture of the mechanisms driving the ISM evolution in the disk galaxies of these groups has thus yet to emerge, but promising avenues for further progress in this field are briefly discussed on the basis of the present sample., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, to appear in online Proc. We present a study of the structural and scaling properties of the gas distributions in the intracluster medium (ICM) of 31 nearby (z < 0.2) clusters observed with XMM-Newton, which together comprise the Representative XMM-Newton Cluster Structure Survey (REXCESS). In contrast to previous studies, this sample is unbiased with respect to cluster dynamical state, and it fully samples the cluster X-ray luminosity function. The clusters cover a temperature range of 2.0 -- 8.5 keV and possess a variety of morphologies. The sampling strategy allows us to compare clusters with a wide range of central cooling times on an equal footing. We present non-parametric gas-density profiles out to distances ranging between 0.8 R_500 and 1.5 R_500. The central gas densities differ greatly from system to system, with no clear correlation with system temperature. At intermediate radii the scaled density profiles show much less scatter, with a clear dependence on system temperature, consistent with the presence of an entropy excess as suggested in previous literature. However, at large scaled radii this dependence becomes weaker: clusters with kT > 3 keV scale self-similarly, with no temperature dependence of gas-density normalisation. We find some evidence of a correlation between dynamical state and outer gas density slope, and between dynamical state and both central gas normalisation and cooling time. We find no evidence of a significant bimodality in the distributions of central density, density gradient, or cooling time. Finally, we present the gas mass-temperature relation for the REXCESS sample, which is consistent with the expectation of self-similar scaling modified by the presence of an entropy excess in the inner regions of the cluster, and has a logarithmic intrinsic scatter of ~10%., Comment: 20 pages, 21 figures. We present an analysis of deep XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of the z=1.05 galaxy cluster XLSSJ022403.9-041328 (hereafter XLSSC 029), detected in the XMM-Newton large scale structure survey. Density and temperature profiles of the X-ray emitting gas were used to perform a hydrostatic mass analysis of the system. This allowed us to measure the total mass and gas fraction in the cluster and define overdensity radii R500 and R2500. The global properties of XLSSC 029 were measured within these radii and compared with those of the local population. The gas mass fraction was found to be consistent with local clusters. The mean metal abundance was 0.18 +0.17 -0.15 Zsol, with the cluster core regions excluded, consistent with the predicted and observed evolution. The properties of XLSSC 029 were then used to investigate the position of the cluster on the M-kT, YX-M, and LX-M scaling relations. In all cases the observed properties of XLSSC 029 agreed well with the simple self-similar evolution of the scaling relations. This is the first test of the evolution of these relations at z > 1 and supports the use of the scaling relations in cosmological studies with distant galaxy clusters., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures. We present a sample of 29 galaxy clusters from the XMM-LSS survey over an area of some 5deg2 out to a redshift of z=1.05. The sample clusters, which represent about half of the X-ray clusters identified in the region, follow well defined X-ray selection criteria and are all spectroscopically confirmed. For all clusters, we provide X-ray luminosities and temperatures as well as masses. The cluster distribution peaks around z=0.3 and T =1.5 keV, half of the objects being groups with a temperature below 2 keV. Our L-T(z) relation points toward self-similar evolution, but does not exclude other physically plausible models. Assuming that cluster scaling laws follow self-similar evolution, our number density estimates up to z=1 are compatible with the predictions of the concordance cosmology and with the findings of previous ROSAT surveys. Our well monitored selection function allowed us to demonstrate that the inclusion of selection effects is essential for the correct determination of the evolution of the L-T relation, which may explain the contradictory results from previous studies. Extensive simulations show that extending the survey area to 10deg2 has the potential to exclude the non-evolution hypothesis, but that constraints on more refined ICM models will probably be limited by the large intrinsic dispersion of the L-T relation. We further demonstrate that increasing the dispersion in the scaling laws increases the number of detectable clusters, hence generating further degeneracy [in addition to sigma8, Omega_m, L(M,z) and T(M,z)] in the cosmological interpretation of the cluster number counts. Following the presentation of the XMM-LSS X-ray source detection package by Pacaud et al., we provide the source lists for the first 5.5 surveyed square degrees. The catalogues pertain to the [0.5-2] and [2-10] keV bands and contain in total 3385 point-like or extended sources above a detection likelihood of 15 in either band. The agreement with deep logN-logS is excellent. The main parameters considered are position, countrate, source extent with associated likelihood values. A set of additional quantities such as astrometric corrections and fluxes are further calculated while errors on the position and countrate are deduced from simulations. We describe the construction of the band-merged catalogue allowing rapid sub-sample selection and easy cross-correlation with external multi-wavelength catalogues. A small optical CFHTLS multi-band subset of objects is associated wich each source along with an X-ray/optical overlay. We make the full X-ray images available in FITS format. We present analysis of Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of three early-type galaxies, NGC 57, NGC 7796 and IC 1531. All three are found in very low density environments, and appear to have no neighbours of comparable size. NGC 57 has a halo of kT~0.9 keV, solar metallicity gas, while NGC 7796 and IC 1531 both have ~0.55 keV, 0.5-0.6 Zsol haloes. IC 1531 has a relatively compact halo, and we consider it likely that gas has been removed from the system by the effects of AGN heating. For NGC 57 and NGC 7796 we estimate mass, entropy and cooling time profiles and find that NGC 57 has a fairly massive dark halo with a mass-to-light ratio of 44.7 (4.0,-8.5) Msol/Lsol (1 sigma uncertainties) at 4.75 Re. This is very similar to the mass-to-light ratio found for NGC 4555 and confirms that isolated ellipticals can possess sizable dark matter haloes. We find a significantly lower mass-to-light ratio for NGC 7796, 10.6 (+2.5,-2.3) Msol/Lsol at 5 Re, and discuss the possibility that NGC 7796 hosts a galactic wind, causing us to underestimate its mass., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

From a Chandra survey of nine interacting galaxy systems the evolution of X-ray emission during the merger process has been investigated. It is found that the X-ray luminosity peaks ~300 Myr before nuclear coalescence, and then dips, even though we know that rapid and increasing activity is still taking place at this time. It is likely that this drop in X-ray luminosity is a consequence of outflows breaking out of the galactic discs of these systems. In this work it is also shown that, for the systems close to the point of nuclear coalescence, Lfir becomes massively enhanced compared to the X-ray luminosity of these systems. We suggest that this enhancement may indicate a `top heavy' IMF, with an enhanced fraction of massive stars. At a time ~1 Gyr after coalescence, the merger-remnants in our sample are X-ray faint when compared to typical mature elliptical galaxies. However, we do see evidence that these systems will start to resemble typical elliptical galaxies at a greater dynamical age, given the properties of the 3 Gyr system within our sample, supporting the idea that halo regeneration will take place within low Lx merger-remnants. Also as a part of this survey, detailed Chandra observations for the double nucleus merger system Mkn 266 and the merger-remnant Arp 222 are presented for the first time., Comment: 20 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS. The largest uncertainty for cosmological studies using clusters of galaxies is introduced by our limited knowledge of the statistics of galaxy cluster structure, and of the scaling relations between observables and cluster mass. To improve on this situation we have started an XMM-Newton Large Programme for the in-depth study of a representative sample of 33 galaxy clusters, selected in the redshift range z=0.055 to 0.183 from the REFLEX Cluster Survey, having X-ray luminosities above 0.4 X 10^44 h_70^-2 erg s^-1 in the 0.1 - 2.4 keV band. This paper introduces the sample, compiles properties of the clusters, and provides detailed information on the sample selection function. We describe the selection of a nearby galaxy cluster sample that makes optimal use of the XMM-Newton field-of-view, and provides nearly homogeneous X-ray luminosity coverage for the full range from poor clusters to the most massive objects in the Universe. For the clusters in the sample, X-ray fluxes are derived and compared to the previously obtained fluxes from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. We find that the fluxes and the flux errors have been reliably determined in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey analysis used for the REFLEX Survey. We use the sample selection function documented in detail in this paper to determine the X-ray luminosity function, and compare it with the luminosity function of the entire REFLEX sample. We also discuss morphological peculiarities of some of the sample members. The sample and some of the background data given in this introductory paper will be important for the application of these data in the detailed studies of cluster structure, to appear in forthcoming publications., Comment: 17 pages, 17 figures; to appear in A&A. We present gas temperature, density, entropy and cooling time profiles for the cores of a sample of 15 galaxy groups observed with {\it Chandra}. We find that the entropy profiles follow a power-law profile down to very small fractions of $R_{500}$. Differences between the gas profiles of groups with radio loud and radio quiet BGGs are only marginally significant, and there is only a small difference in the $L_X:T_X$ relations, for the central regions we study with {\it Chandra}, between the radio-loud and radio-quiet objects in our sample, in contrast to the much larger difference found on scales of the whole group in earlier work. However, there is evidence, from splitting the sample based on the mass of the central black holes, that repeated outbursts of AGN activity may have a long term cumulative effect on the entropy profiles. We argue that, to first-order, energy injection from radio sources does not change the global structure of the gas in the cores of groups, although it can displace gas on a local level. In most systems, it appears that AGN energy injection serves primarily to counter the effects of radiative cooling, rather than being responsible for the similarity breaking between groups and clusters., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, accepted MNRAS

We present XMM, Chandra and VLA observations of the USGC S152 group and its central elliptical NGC 3411. Imaging of the group X-ray halo suggests it is relaxed with little apparent structure. We investigate the temperature and metal abundance structure of the group halo, and find that while the abundance distribution is fairly typical, the temperature profile is highly unusual, showing a hot inner core surrounded by a cool shell of gas with a radius of \~20-40 kpc, at the center of the larger group halo. Spectral mapping confirms an irregular ring of gas ~0.15 keV cooler than its surroundings. We estimate the total mass, entropy and cooling time profiles within ~200 kpc, and find that the cool shell contains ~9x10^9 Msun of gas. VLA observations at 1.4, 5 and 8 GHz reveal a relatively weak nuclear radio source, with a core radio luminosity L_R=2.7x10^38 erg/s, and a diffuse component extended on scales of a few arcseconds (or more). A lack of evidence for activity at optical or X-ray wavelengths supports the conclusion that the central black hole is currently in a quiescent state. We study the thermodynamic properties of the hot gas in a sample of groups in the 0.012-0.024 redshift range, using XMM-Newton observations. We present measurements of temperature, entropy, pressure and iron abundance. Non-parametric fits are used to derive the mean properties of the sample and to study dispersion in the values of entropy and pressure. The scaling of the entropy at 0.2r500 matches well the results of Ponman et al. (2003). However, compared to cool clusters, the groups in our sample reveal larger entropy at inner radii and a substantially flatter slope in the entropy in the outskirts, compared to both the prediction of pure gravitational heating and to observations of clusters. This difference corresponds to the systematically flatter group surface brightness profiles, reported previously. The scaled pressure profiles can be well approximated with a Sersic model with n=4. We present the X-ray pipeline developed for the purpose of the cluster search in the XMM-LSS survey. It is based on a two-stage procedure via a dedicated handling of the Poisson nature of the signal: (1) source detection on multi-resolution wavelet filtered images; (2) source analysis by means of a maximum likelihood fit to the photon images. The source detection efficiency and characterisation are studied through extensive Monte-Carlo simulations. This led us to define two samples of extended sources: the C1 class that is uncontaminated, and the less restrictive C2 class that allows for 50% contamination. The resulting predicted selection function is presented and the comparison to the current XMM-LSS confirmed cluster sample shows very good agreement. We arrive at average predicted source densities of about 7 C1 and 12 C2 per deg2, which is higher than any available wide field X-ray survey. We finally notice a substantial deviation of the predicted redshift distribution for our samples from the one obtained using the usual assumption of a flux limited sample., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, MNRAS accepted. We investigate the physical properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) in the merging pair of galaxies known as The Antennae (NGC 4038/39), using the deep coadded ~411 ks Chandra ACIS-S data set. The method of analysis and some of the main results from the spectral analysis, such as metal abundances and their variations from ~0.2 to ~20-30 times solar, are described in Paper I (Baldi et al. submitted). In the present paper we investigate in detail the physics of the hot emitting gas, deriving measures for the hot-gas mass (~10^ M_sun), cooling times (10^7-10^8 yr), and pressure (3.5x10^-11-2.8x10^-10 dyne cm^-2). At least in one of the two nuclei (NGC 4038) the hot-gas pressure is significantly higher than the CO pressure, implying that shock waves may be driven into the CO clouds. Comparison of the metal abundances with the average stellar yields predicted by theoretical models of SN explosions points to SNe of Type II as the main contributors of metals to the hot ISM. There is no evidence of any correlation between radio-optical star-formation indicators and the measured metal abundances. Although due to uncertainties in the average gas density we cannot exclude that mixing may have played an important role, the short time required to produce the observed metal masses (<=2 Myr) suggests that the correlations are unlikely to have been destroyed by efficient mixing. More likely, a significant fraction of SN II ejecta may be in a cool phase, in grains, or escaping in hot winds. We put together the results of XMM-Newton observations of a number of representative group and cluster samples at low and high redshifts. These results confirm the entropy ramp as an explanation of the observed scaling relations. We observe a mild evolution in the entropy of clusters. The observed degree of evolution is consistent with expectations of the shock heating at a fixed overdensity (500) with respect to the critical density in LCDM. The study of the evolution in the pressure scaling imposes strong requirements in the definition of the average temperature of the cluster. The scaling temperature should be consistent to better than the 10% level. Once such a consistency is achieved, no additional evolution in the pressure has been detected in addition to the prediction of the shock heating in the LCDM Universe., Comment: 8 pages, Adv. in Space Research, in press

We present results from a 34 ks Chandra/ACIS-S observation of the nearby (d=3.1 Mpc) lenticular galaxy NGC 5102, previously shown to have an unusually low X-ray luminosity. We detect eleven X-ray point sources within the the $D_{25}$ optical boundary of the galaxy (93% of the light), one third to one half of which are likely to be background AGN. One source is coincident with the optical nucleus and may be a low-luminosity AGN. Only two sources with an X-ray luminosity greater than 10$^{37}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ in the 0.5-5.0 keV band were detected, one of which is statistically likely to be a background AGN. We expected to detect 6 such luminous sources if the XRB population scales linearly with optical magnitude of the host galaxy. NGC 5102 has an unusually low number of XRBs. NGC 5102 is unusually blue for its morphological type, and has undergone at least two recent bursts of star formation. We present the results of optical/UV spectral synthesis analysis and demonstrate that a significant fraction ($>$50%) of the stars in this galaxy are comparatively young ($<3\times10^9$ years old). If the lack of X-ray binaries is related to the relative youth of most of the stars, this would support models of LMXB formation and evolution that require wide binaries to shed angular momentum on a timescale of Gyrs. We find that NGC 5102 has an unusually low specific frequency of globular clusters ($S_N\sim$0.4), which could also explain the lack of LMXBs. We also detect diffuse X-ray emission in the central $\sim$1 kpc of the galaxy. This hot gas is most likely a superbubble created by multiple supernovae of massive stars born during the most recent star burst, and is driving the shock into the ISM which was inferred from optical observations., Comment: 33 pages, 7 figures, 6 tables - Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We present XMM-Newton observations of the wake-radiogalaxy system 4C34.16, which shows a cool and dense wake trailing behind 4C34.16's host galaxy. A comparison with numerical simulations is enlightening, as they demonstrate that the wake is produced mainly by ram pressure stripping during the galactic motion though the surrounding cluster. The mass of the wake is a substantial fraction of the mass of an elliptical galaxy's X-ray halo. This observational fact supports a wake formation scenario similar to the one demonstrated numerically by Acreman et al (2003): the host galaxy of 4C34.16 has fallen into its cluster, and is currently crossing its central regions. In this paper we present the results of a 20 ks high resolution Chandra X-ray observation of the peculiar galaxy pair NGC 3395/3396, a system at a very early stage of merging, and less evolved than the famous Antennae and Mice merging systems. Previously unpublished ROSAT HRI data are also presented. The point source population and the hot diffuse gas in this system are investigated, and compared with other merging galaxy pairs. 16 X-ray point sources are detected in Arp 270, 7 of which are classified as ULXs (Lx > 10^39 erg/s). From spectral fits and the age of the system it seems likely that these are predominantly high mass X-ray binaries. The diffuse gas emits at a global temperature of ~0.5 keV, consistent with temperatures observed in other interacting systems, and we see no evidence of the starburst-driven hot gaseous outflows seen in more evolved systems such as The Mice and The Antennae. It is likely that these features are absent from Arp 270 as the gas has had insufficient time to break out of the galaxy disks. 32% of the luminosity of Arp 270 arises from the diffuse gas in the system, this is low when compared to later stage merging systems and gives further credence that this is an early stage merger. Comparing the ULX population of Arp 270 to other merging systems, we derive a relationship between the star formation rate of the system, indicated by Lfir, and the number (N(ULX)) and luminosity (Lulx) of its ULX population. We find Nulx proportional to Lfir^0.18 and Lulx proportional to Lfir^0.54. These relationships, coupled with the relation of the point source X-ray luminosity (Lxp) to Lk and Lfir+uv (Colbert et al. 2003), indicate that the ULX sources in an interacting system have contributions from both the old and young stellar populations., Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We use hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy clusters and groups to study the effect of pre-heating on the entropy structure of the ICM. Our simulations account for non-gravitational heating of the gas either by imposing a minimum entropy floor at redshift z=3, or by considering feedback by galactic winds powered by supernova (SN) energy. In the adiabatic simulations we find that the entropy is increased out to the external regions as a consequence of the transition from clumpy to smooth accretion induced by extra heating. This result is in line with the predictions of the semi-analytical model by Voit et al. However, the introduction of radiative cooling substantially reduces this entropy amplification effect. While galactic winds of increasing strength are effective in regulating star formation, they have a negligible effect on the entropy profile of cluster-sized halos. Only in models where the action of the winds is complemented with diffuse heating corresponding to a pre-collapse entropy do we find a sizable entropy amplification out to the virial radius of the groups. Observational evidence for entropy amplification in the outskirts of galaxy clusters and groups therefore favours a scenario for feedback that distributes heating energy in a more diffuse way than predicted by the model for galactic winds from SN explosions explored here., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures to appear in MNRAS. We present Chandra and VLA observations of two galaxy clusters, Abell 160 and Abell 2462, whose brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) host wide angle tailed radio galaxies (WATs). We search for evidence of interactions between the radio emission and the hot, X-ray emitting gas, and test various jet termination models. We find that both clusters have cool BCGs at the cluster centre, and that the scale of these cores ~30-40kpc for both sources) is of approximately the same scale as the length of the radio jets. For both sources, the jet flaring point is coincident with a steepening in the host cluster's temperature gradient, and similar results are found for 3C465 and Hydra A. However, none of the published models of WAT formation offer a satisfactory explanation as to why this may be the case. Therefore it is unclear what causes the sudden transition between the jet and the plume. Without accurate modelling, we cannot ascertain whether the steepening of the temperature gradient is the main cause of the transition, or merely a tracer of an underlying process., Comment: 11 pages, 20 figures, LaTeX, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present an analysis of the properties of the hot interstellar medium (ISM) in the merging pair of galaxies known as The Antennae (NGC 4038/39), performed using the deep, coadded ~411 ks Chandra ACIS-S data set. These deep X-ray observations and Chandra's high angular resolution allow us to investigate the properties of the hot ISM with unprecedented spatial and spectral resolution. Through a spatially resolved spectral analysis, we find a variety of temperatures (from 0.2 to 0.7 keV) and Nh (from Galactic to 2x10^21 cm^-2). Metal abundances for Ne, Mg, Si, and Fe vary dramatically throughout the ISM from sub-solar values (~0.2) up to several times solar., Comment: 33 pages, 18 figures, revised version accepted by Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series

We present analysis of a Chandra observation of the elliptical galaxy NGC 4555. The galaxy lies in a very low density environment, either isolated from all galaxies of similar mass or on the outskirts of a group. Despite this, NGC 4555 has a large gaseous halo, extending to ~60 kpc. We find the mean gas temperature to be ~0.95 keV and the Iron abundance to be ~0.5 solar. We model the surface brightness, temperature and abundance distribution of the halo and use these results to estimate parameters such as the entropy and cooling time of the gas, and the total gravitational mass of the galaxy. In contrast to recent results showing that moderate luminosity ellipticals contain relatively small quantities of dark matter, our results show that NGC 4555 has a massive dark halo and large mass-to-light ratio (56.8 [+34.2,-35.8] solar at 50 kpc, 42.7 [+14.6,-21.2] solar at 5 effective radii, 1 sigma errors). Using the high sensitivity of XMM, we have studied the X-ray emission of the two proto-typical late-stage merger remnants, NGC 3921 and NGC 7252. In the case of NGC 7252, this is complemented by archival Chandra data. We investigate the nature of the discrete X-ray point source populations and the hot diffuse gas components in these two galaxies, and compare them in the light of their different merger ages and histories. We detect 3 candidate ultra-luminous X-ray point sources in NGC 3921 and at least 6 in NGC 7252, for which we have high spatial resolution Chandra data. These have luminosities ranging from \~1.4x10^39-10^40 erg s^-1 (for H_0= 75 km s-1 Mpc^-1). We expect these ULXs to be high mass X-ray binaries, associated with the recent star formation in these two galaxies. Extended hot gas is observed in both galaxies. We have sufficient counts in the XMM data to fit two-component hot plasma models to their X-ray spectra and estimate the X-ray luminosities of the hot diffuse gas components to be 2.75x10^40 erg s^-1 and 2.09x10^40 erg s^-1 in NGC 3921 and NGC 7252, respectively. These luminosities are low compared with the luminosities observed in typical mature elliptical galaxies LX ~10^(41-42) erg s^-1), into which these merger remnants are expected to evolve. We do not see evidence that the X-ray halos of these galaxies are currently being regenerated to the masses and luminosities seen in typical elliptical galaxies. The mass of atomic gas available to fall back into the main bodies of these galaxies and shock-heat to X-ray temperatures is insufficient for this to be the sole halo regeneration mechanism. We conclude that halo regeneration is most likely a long-term (>10 Gyr) process, occurring predominantly via mass loss from evolving stars, in a sub-sonic outflow stage commencing ~2 Gyr after the merging event., Comment: 24 pages, 18 figures, MNRAS accepted. We present the integrated 411 ks {\it Chandra} ACIS-S exposure of the Antennae galaxies (NGC 4038/39). Besides a rich population of point-like sources, this spectacular image reveals a spatially and spectrally complex hot diffuse gaseous component. For the first time we detect intense line emission from Fe, Ne, Mg and Si in The Antennae, and obtain a detailed picture of spatially varied metal abundances in the hot interstellar medium (ISM) of a galaxy. In certain regions, the abundances of $\alpha$-elements may be many times solar, while the Fe abundance is sub-solar or near-solar. The differences in the local metal enrichment of the hot ISM may be related to the local star formation rates and to the degree of confinement of the enriched hot ISM. We also report large-scale gaseous features, including two gigantic, $\sim$10-kpc-scale `loops' extending to the South of the merging disks, and a low-surface-brightness hot halo, extending out to $\sim$18 kpc. These features may be related to superwinds from the starburst in The Antennae or result from the merger hydrodynamics. Their long cooling times suggest that they may persist to form the hot X-ray halo of the emerging elliptical galaxy., Comment: ApJ Letters, in press

We present a photometric analysis of a large sample of early-type galaxies in 16 nearby groups, imaged with the Wide-Field Camera on the Isaac Newton Telescope. Using a two-dimensional surface brightness decomposition routine, we fit Sersic (r^{1/n}) and exponential models to their bulge and disk components respectively. Dividing the galaxies into three subsamples according to the X-ray luminosities of their parent groups, we compare their photometric properties. Galaxies in X-ray luminous groups tend to be larger and more luminous than those in groups with undetected or low X-ray luminosities, but no significant differences in n are seen. Both normal and dwarf elliptical galaxies in the central regions of groups are found to have cuspier profiles than their counterparts in group outskirts. Structural differences between dwarf and normal elliptical galaxies are apparent in terms of an offset between their ``Photometric Planes'' in the space of n, r_e and mu_0. Dwarf ellipticals are found to populate a surface, with remarkably low scatter, in this space with significant curvature, somewhat similar to the surfaces of constant entropy proposed by Marquez etal (2001). Normal ellipticals are offset from this distribution in a direction of higher specific entropy. We present XMM-Newton observations of three X-ray under-luminous elliptical galaxies, NGC 3585, NGC 4494 and NGC 5322. All three galaxies have relatively large optical luminosities (log LB=10.35-10.67 solar) but have X-ray luminosities consistent with emission from discrete sources only. In conjunction with a Chandra observation of NGC 3585, we analyse the XMM data and show that the three galaxies are dominated by discrete source emission, but do possess some X-ray emitting gas. The gas is at relatively low temperatures, kT=0.25-0.44 keV. All three galaxies show evidence of recent dynamical disturbance and formation through mergers, including kinematically distinct cores, young stellar ages, and embedded stellar disks. This leads us to conclude that the galaxies formed relatively recently and have yet to build up large X-ray halos. They are likely to be in a developmental phase where the X-ray gas has a very low density, making it undetectable outside the galaxy core. However, if the gas is a product of stellar mass loss, as seems most probable, we would expect to observe supersolar metal abundances. While abundance is not well constrained by the data, we find best fit abundances <0.1 solar for single-temperature models, and it seems unlikely that we could underestimate the metallicity by such a large factor., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 12 pages, 8 postscript figures

We present an X-ray study of the galaxy group or poor cluster MKW 4. Working with XMM data we examine the distribution and properties of the hot gas which makes up the group halo. The inner halo shows some signs of structure, with circular or elliptical beta models providing a poor fit to the surface brightness profile. This may be evidence of large scale motion in the inner halo, but we do not find evidence of sharp fronts or edges in the emission. The temperature of the halo declines in the core, with deprojected spectral fits showing a central temperature of ~1.3 keV compared to ~3 keV at 100 kpc. In the central ~30 kpc of the group multi-temperature spectral models are required to fit the data, but they indicate a lack of gas at low temperatures. Steady state cooling flow models provide poor fits to the inner regions of the group and the estimated cooling time of the gas is long except within the central dominant galaxy, NGC 4073. Abundance profiles show a sharp increase in the core of the group, with mean abundance rising by a factor of two in the centre of NGC 4073. Fitting individual elements shows the same trend, with high values of Fe, Si and S in the core. We estimate that ~50% of the Fe in the central 40 kpc was injected by SNIa, in agreement with previous ASCA studies. Using our best fitting surface brightness and temperature models, we calculate the mass, gas fraction, entropy and mass-to-light ratio of the group. At 100 kpc (~0.1 virial radii) the total mass and gas entropy of the system (~2x10^13 Msol and ~300 keV cm^2) are quite comparable to those of other systems of similar temperature, but the gas fraction is rather low (~1%). We investigate the spatial distribution of the baryonic and non-baryonic mass components in a sample of 66 virialized systems. We have used X-ray measurements to determine the deprojected temperature and density structure of the intergalactic medium and have employed these to map the underlying gravitational potential. In addition, we have measured the deprojected spatial distribution of galaxy luminosity for a subset of this sample, spanning over 2 decades in mass. With this combined X-ray/optical study we examine the scaling properties of the baryons and address the issue of mass-to-light (M/L) ratio in groups and clusters of galaxies. We measure a median mass-to-light ratio of 224 h70 M/L (solar) in the rest frame B_j band, in good agreement with other measurements based on X-ray determined masses. There is no trend in M/L with X-ray temperature and no significant trend for mass to increase faster than luminosity: M \propto \L_{B,j}^{1.08 +/- 0.12}. This implied lack of significant variation in star formation efficiency suggests that gas cooling cannot be greatly enhanced in groups, unless it drops out to form baryonic dark matter. Correspondingly, our results indicate that non-gravitational heating must have played a significant role in establishing the observed departure from self-similarity in low mass systems. The median baryon fraction for our sample is 0.162 h70^{-3/2}, which allows us to place an upper limit on the cosmological matter density, Omega_m <= 0.27 h70^{-1}, in good agreement with the latest results from WMAP. We find evidence of a systematic trend towards higher central density concentration in the coolest haloes, indicative of an early formation epoch and consistent with hierarchical formation models., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures; published in MNRAS. The chandra monitoring observations of The Antennae (NGC 4038/39) have led to the discovery of a variable, luminous, supersoft source (SSS). This source is only detected at energies below 2 keV and, in 2002 May, reached count rates comparable to those of the nine ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) detected in these galaxies. Spectral fits of the SSS data give acceptable results only for a $\sim$100--90 eV blackbody spectrum with an intrinsic absorption column of $N_{\rm H} \sim 2-3 \times 10^{21} \rm cm^{-2}$. For a distance of 19 Mpc, the best-fit observed luminosity increases from 1.7$\times 10^{38}$\ergs in 1999 December to 8.0$\times 10^{38}$\ergs in 2002 May. The intrinsic, absorption-corrected best-fit luminosity reaches 1.4$\times 10^{40}$ \ergs in 2002 May. The assumption of unbeamed emission would suggest a black hole of $\ga$100\msun. However, if the emission is blackbody at all times, as suggested by the steep soft spectrum, the radiating area would have to vary by a factor of $\sim10^3$, inconsistent with gravitational energy release from within a few Schwarzschild radii of a black hole. Viable explanations for the observed properties of the SSS are provided by anisotropic emission from either an accreting nuclear-burning white dwarf or an accreting stellar-mass black hole., Comment: ApJ in press

We describe the properties of a sample of galaxy groups with very unusual distributions of galaxy luminosities. The most extreme example has an X-ray luminosity similar to that of the Virgo cluster but has a very low richness, with only one galaxy brighter than L*, compared with six in Virgo. That one galaxy, however, is optically more luminous than any galaxy in Virgo and has an optical luminosity as bright as many of the central cD galaxies in rich Abell clusters. The characteristic feature of the fossil groups we study is that most of the light arises from one dominant, central galaxy. We define a fossil system and, based on this definition, construct a small X-ray selected, flux-limited sample of fossil groups with well known selection criteria. We confirm that these systems are indeed groups of galaxies, but dominated by one central luminous giant elliptical galaxy and with few, or no, L* galaxies. We find that fossil systems represent 8%-20% of all systems of the same X-ray luminosity. Fossil groups are at least as numerous as all poor and rich clusters combined, and are thus a possible site for the formation of luminous central cluster galaxies before infall into clusters occurs. The fossil systems in our sample have significantly higher X-ray luminosities than normal groups of similar total optical luminosities (or similar X-ray temperature, where the latter can be measured). These enhanced X-ray luminosities may be due to relatively cool gas in the innermost regions or due to a low central gas entropy. We interpret fossil groups as old, undisturbed systems which have avoided infall into clusters, but where galaxy merging of most of the L* galaxies has occurred. We examine profiles and scaling properties of the entropy of the intergalactic gas in a sample of 66 virialized systems, ranging in mass from single elliptical galaxies to rich clusters, for which we have resolved X-ray temperature profiles. Some of the properties we derive appear to be inconsistent with any of the models put forward to explain the breaking of self-similarity in the baryon content of clusters. In particular, the entropy profiles, scaled to the virial radius, are broadly similar in form across the sample, apart from a normalization factor which differs from the simple self-similar scaling with temperature. Low mass systems do not show the large isentropic cores predicted by preheating models, and the high entropy excesses reported at large radii in groups by Finoguenov et al (2002) are confirmed, and found to extend even to moderately rich clusters. We discuss the implications of these results for the evolutionary history of the hot gas in clusters, and suggest that preheating may affect the entropy of intracluster gas primarily by reducing the density of material accreting into groups and clusters along cosmic filaments., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures - accepted for publication in MNRAS

We have assembled a large sample of virialized systems, comprising 66 galaxy clusters, groups and elliptical galaxies with high quality X-ray data. To each system we have fitted analytical profiles describing the gas density and temperature variation with radius, corrected for the effects of central gas cooling. We present an analysis of the scaling properties of these systems and focus in this paper on the gas distribution and M-T relation. In addition to clusters and groups, our sample includes two early-type galaxies, carefully selected to avoid contamination from group or cluster X-ray emission. We compare the properties of these objects with those of more massive systems and find evidence for a systematic difference between galaxy-sized haloes and groups of a similar temperature. We derive a mean logarithmic slope of the M-T relation within R_200 of 1.84+/-0.06, although there is some evidence of a gradual steepening in the M-T relation, with decreasing mass. We recover a similar slope using two additional methods of calculating the mean temperature. Repeating the analysis with the assumption of isothermality, we find the slope changes only slightly, to 1.89+/-0.04, but the normalization is increased by 30%. Correspondingly, the mean gas fraction within R_200 changes from (0.13+/-0.01)h70^-1.5 to (0.11+/-0.01)h70^-1.5, for the isothermal case, with the smaller fractional change reflecting different behaviour between hot and cool systems. There is a strong correlation between the gas fraction within 0.3*R_200 and temperature. This reflects the strong (5.8 sigma) trend between the gas density slope parameter, beta, and temperature, which has been found in previous work. We report the first results of the Chandra temporal monitoring of the ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs) in the Antennae galaxies (NGC 4038/39). Observations at four different epochs, covering time scales of 2 years to 2 months, show variability in seven out of nine ULXs, confirming that they are likely to be accreting compact X-ray binaries (XRBs). The seven variable ULXs exhibit a variety of temporal and spectral behaviors: one has harder X-ray colors with decreasing luminosity, similar to the black hole binary Cyg X-1, but four other ULXs show the opposite behavior.
