Abstract Hazardous compounds from microplastics in coastal and marine environments are adsorbed by live organisms, affecting human and marine life. It takes time, money and effort to study the distribution and type of microplastics in the environment, using appropriate expensive equipment in a laboratory. However, deep learning can assist in identifying and quantifying microplastics from an image. This paper presents a novel microplastic classification method that combines the benefits of UV light with deep learning. The Faster-RCNN model with a ResNet-50-FPN backbone was implemented to detect and identify microplastics. Microplastic images from the field taken under UV light were used to train and validate the model. This classification model achieved a high precision of 85.5–87.8%, and the mAP scores were 33.9% on an internal test set and 35.7% on an external test set. This classification approach provides a high-accuracy, low-cost, and time-effective automated identification and counting of microplastics.

Pollen, charcoal, loss on ignition, geochemistry, and geophysical analyses were used to reveal the palaeoenvironment, vegetation, and sedimentary dynamics of the Krabi mangroves and the Andaman coast during the late Holocene. Two sediment cores, radiocarbon dated to ∼4400 cal BP, were collected from the Nai Nang mangroves in Krabi Province, the Thailand Andaman coast. This analysis documented how the area evolved from a tidal channel to a tidal area dominated by mangrove ecosystems. During the tidal channel phase (∼4400–2700 cal yr BP), the study site was characterized by a high-energy depositional environment, where sediment accumulated along tidal channels. Mangrove development began around 4400 cal yr BP and was influenced by varying contributions from tidal and freshwater inputs. Sea level during this period showed a slight rise until ∼4200 cal yr BP, followed by a subsequent fall. From ∼2700 to 1050 cal yr BP, the tidal channel was filled with finer sediments, forming intertidal flats that supported mangroves, back mangroves, and freshwater forest taxa, indicating a transition to mixed coastal vegetation. Sea levels remained relatively low during this period. From around 1050 cal yr BP to the present, mangroves replaced the previous mixed coastal vegetation, most likely driven by rising sea levels, particularly during the last 200 years. The observed sedimentation rates indicate that mangroves in Krabi will need to undergo continued future landward migration to adapt to changing coastal conditions, given the current and projected global sea-level rise.

Tropical shallow-water habitats represent the marine environments with the greatest biodiversity; however, these habitats are the most vulnerable to climate warming. Corals, seagrasses, and macroalgae play a crucial role in the structure, functions, and processes of the coastal ecosystems. Understanding their growth and physiological responses to elevated temperature and interspecific sensitivity is a necessary step to predict the fate of future coastal community. Six species representatives, including Pocillopora acuta, Porites lutea, Halophila ovalis, Thalassia hemprichii, Padina boryana, and Ulva intestinalis, collected from Phuket, Thailand, were subjected to stress manipulation for 5 days. Corals were tested at 27, 29.5, 32, and 34.5°C, while seagrasses and macroalgae were tested at 27, 32, 37, and 42°C. After the stress period, the species were allowed to recover for 5 days at 27°C for corals and 32°C for seagrasses and macroalgae. Non-destructive evaluation of photosynthetic parameters (Fv/Fm, Fv/F0, ϕPSII and rapid light curves) was carried out on days 0, 3, 5, 6, 8, and 10. Chlorophyll contents and growth rates were quantified at the end of stress, and recovery periods. An integrated biomarker response (IBR) approach was adopted to integrate the candidate responses (Fv/Fm, chlorophyll content, and growth rate) and quantify the overall temperature effects. Elevated temperatures were found to affect photosynthesis, chlorophyll content, and growth rates of all species. Lethal effects were detected at 34.5°C in corals, whereas adverse but recoverable effects were detected at 32°C. Seagrasses and macroalgae displayed a rapid decline in photosynthesis and lethal effects at 42°C. In some species, sublethal stress manifested as slower growth and lower chlorophyll content at 37°C, while photosynthesis remained unaffected. Among all, T. hemprichii displayed the highest thermotolerance. IBR provided evidence that elevated temperature affected the overall performance of all tested species, depending on temperature level. Our findings show a sensitivity that differs among important groups of tropical marine organisms inhabiting the same shallow-water environments and highlights the importance of integrating biomarkers across biological levels to assess their vulnerability to climate warming.

Marine debris has become a global problem affecting coral health around the globe. However, the photophysiological responses of corals to marine debris stress remain unclear. Therefore, this study firstly investigated transparent and opaque plastic bag shading and fishing nets directly contacting the coral. Photosynthetic performance, pigment content, symbiont density, and calcification rate of a branching coral Pocillopora acuta and a massive coral Porites lutea were investigated after 4 weeks of exposure to marine debris. The results show that the maximum quantum yield of PSII significantly decreased in P. lutea with all treatments, while P. acuta showed no effect on the maximum quantum yield of PSII from any treatments. Transparent plastic bag shading does not affect P. acuta, but significantly affected the maximum photochemical efficiency of P. lutea. Photoacclimation of cellular pigment content was also observed under opaque plastic bag shading for both species at week 2. Fishing nets had the strongest effect and resulted in P. acuta bleaching and P. lutea partial mortality as well as a decline in zooxanthellae density. Calcification rate of P. acuta significantly decreased with treatments using opaque plastic bag and fishing net, but for P. lutea only the treatment with fishing net gave any observable effects. This study suggests that the sensitivities of corals to marine debris differ strongly by species and morphology of the coral.

Macrophytes play an important role in the freshwater ecosystem. However, human activities and climate change are currently affecting aquatic lakes and species in various ways. The heterogeneity of macrophyte ecophysiology might lead to different responses to changing environments. To understand the photosynthetic responses of freshwater macrophytes to changes in light, six freshwater macrophyte species from Songkhla Lagoon were investigated. The results showed that there was a diurnal response of photosynthetic activities in all species. The Fv/Fm and ∆F/Fm′ of all species decreased at midday (9 a.m.–3 p.m.) then recovered at 6 p.m. close to the 6 a.m. level. As well as alpha, the positive relation between alpha and light showed the adaptation of plants. The saturating irradiance (Ik) revealed that plants from different light regimes showed different responses to light and temperature changes. To maintain a positive carbon balance and cope with light and temperature conditions, macrophytes had strategies such as modifying light harvesting capacity and light use. This study provides a better understanding of the vulnerability of each species to environmental changes and photosynthetic responses that enable species from different light regime to adapt to changing light environments.

Increasing levels of greenhouse gases lead to ocean warming, which affects a range of marine organisms. Corals live in a narrow temperature range and become stressed when the temperatures change. Bleaching occurs when the temperature exceeds the coral’s threshold, and can be severe when this is combined with other stressors such as light. In order to understand how temperature and light affect corals in their physiological responses and photosynthetic performance, Pocillopora acuta from Maiton Island (MT) and Panwa Cape (PW), representing different environments, were investigated. The results show that light and temperature had by regime different effects on Symbiodiniaceae photosynthesis and the coral growth rate. There was a synergistic effect of elevated temperature and light on photosynthesis, as observed in the photochemical efficiency and pigment contents, suggesting photo-damage. A higher growth rate in Panwa corals was observed in control, and while elevated temperature reduced coral growth. Elevated temperature affected the Panwa coral less, suggesting that corals from this regime might be able to recover when the temperature returns to normal. This information is important for predicting the coral responses to elevated temperature especially in the summer, as regards the possibility of coral bleaching.

A novel infectious respiratory disease was recognized in Wuhan (Hubei Province, China) in December 2019. In February 2020, the disease was named "coronavirus disease 2019" (COVID-19). COVID-19 became a pandemic in March 2020, and, since then, different countries have implemented a broad spectrum of policies. Thailand is considered to be among the top countries in handling its first wave of the outbreak-12 January to 31 July 2020. Here, we illustrate how Thailand tackled the COVID-19 outbreak, particularly the effects of public health interventions on the epidemiological spread. This study shows how the available data from the outbreak can be analyzed and visualized to quantify the severity of the outbreak, the effectiveness of the interventions, and the level of risk of allowed activities during an easing of a "lockdown." This study shows how a well-organized governmental apparatus can overcome the havoc caused by a pandemic.

A submarine robot is a semi-autonomous submarine robot used mainly for marine environmental research. We aim todevelop a low cost, semi-autonomous submarine robot which is able to travel underwater. The robot’s structure was designedand patented using a novel idea of the diving system employing a volume adjustment mechanism to vary the robot’s density.A light weight, flexibility and small structure provided by PVC can be used to construct the torpedo-liked shape robot.Hydraulic seal and O-ring rubbers are used to prevent water leaking. This robot is controlled by a wired communicationsystem.

Ko Yo, situated at the mouth of Songkhla Lagoon, is an urban ecosystem renowned as one of the active areas of Songkhla Province. Numerous anthropogenic activities occur in this area, including homestay tourism, aquaculture, fishing, and the operation of restaurants, all of which generate significant environmental waste. Microplastics represent a widespread pollutant and have been widely recognized as a critical environmental concern. However, they have received little attention among the general public. Therefore, this study investigated the type and quantity of microplastic accumulation in the water bodies surrounding Ko Yo, Songkhla Province. Water sampling stations were established along the coastline and 1 km into the subtidal area, and sampling was conducted for a year. Microplastics in the water samples were recorded and categorized using a modified size and color sorting protocol. Samples were analyzed via Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy to identify microplastic polymers. The results revealed the accumulation of 6 types of microplastics around Ko Yo: Cotton polyester blend, polyester, alkyd, polypropylene, polyvinylchloride, and low-density polyethylene. These polymers most frequently occurred during the summer and the northeastern monsoon season. Cotton polyester blend, a synthetic fiber commonly used in clothing, furniture, ropes, nets, and cages, was found in the highest quantities across all months and stations. This update on microplastic contamination in natural environments near household areas could lead the idea of the microplastic status around Ko Yo and provide vital insights into the environmental and health implications of microplastics.
