2. What Makes an Idea Risky? The Relations between Perceptions of Idea Novelty, Usefulness, and Risk.

Abstract

Individuals and organizations frequently tout creative ideas as a desirable goal, and yet, creative ideas are frequently rejected. Creativity researchers have often suggested that creative ideas are rejected because they are perceived as riskier due to their inherent novelty or originality. Although this assumption is prevalent, we are unaware of any empirical research directly examining the relations between perceptions of novelty and risk. We provide an empirical test of this assumption in two studies in which participants rate the novelty, usefulness, and riskiness of ideas. Across both studies, we find consistent support for the idea that usefulness, rather than novelty, has the strongest relation with risk perceptions. We also find some evidence that novelty and usefulness interact to predict perceptions of risk. Additionally, in Study 2, we find that usefulness has the strongest relation with willingness to invest and buy a product. The findings of this study suggest that the bias against creativity may be driven by the perceived usefulness of an idea, rather than its novelty, such that ideas with lower usefulness are perceived to be riskier. 5. Factors of Artificial Intelligence Usage in Personnel Selection: An Examination of Timing, Algorithm Aversion, and Accuracy

Abstract

Artificial intelligence is increasingly used by organizations to aid the personnel selection process and improve decision making. Existing research surrounding mechanical combination (including artificial intelligence) has been shown to increase decision validity, reducing discrimination and bias in the hiring process. Despite these positive attributes, hiring mangers frequently display resistance to these aids, preferring to rely on their own intuitive judgment. The present study examines factors that influence the reluctance to use artificial intelligence when making hiring decisions. The study builds on previous research, examining the effects of support timing, algorithm aversion, and accuracy on agreement with artificial intelligence candidate suggestion, time to make a decision, perceived decision making autonomy, and decision satisfaction. Results do not indicate a significant effect of support timing on effort, agreement with AI, or perceptions of autonomy, though support is found for the moderating role of dispositional algorithm aversion on the support timing-autonomy relationship. Unexpectedly, receiving support was positively related to autonomy at higher levels of algorithm aversion but unrelated at lower levels of algorithm aversion. Limited support was also found for the impact of higher accuracy thresholds on objective and subjective agreement, suggesting the importance of accuracy in the utilization relationship. Implications and future directions are discussed.
