Currently, the modelling of the railway catenaries for straight tracks is well understood and demonstrated via an accepted number of applications and an international benchmark. However, in the presence of a general track geometry, including curved tracks, challenges still remain. The fundamental difficulty is how to address the catenary layout in the presence of curves for a long railway track in which a large number of catenary sections are defined. To support the catenary design, e.g. in new electrification projects, it is fundamental to identify the track geometry, which is not always accessible to the overhead line engineers. This work purposes a novel approach for track geometry reconstruction using aerial views. The reconstruction methodology is based on the general geometry rules for track design. The track geometry obtained is then used as the reference to define the layout of the catenary. The Network Rail Series 1 overhead equipment is used here and the 3D finite element model of the catenary is built on the curved track geometry. The results of this work demonstrate, not only the advances proposed to study more realistically the pantograph-catenary interaction, but also the need to consider general curved tracks in acceptance and interoperability studies. The development and implementation of wheel-rail contact models in multibody codes are two active research topics, aiming at improving the accuracy of numerical results and computational efficiency of the dynamics analysis. However, the realism of numerical results is challenged when considering switches and crossings (S&C), where the most adverse wheel-rail contact conditions occur. This paper presents a benchmark study where the performance of the multibody codes MUBODyn, VOCO and VI-Rail are assessed using three case scenarios that involve typical contact conditions observed in S&C. A focused description of the relevant methods to determine the wheel-rail contact forces is presented for each software. The three scenarios considered in this work have been designed to represent typical challenging contact conditions observed in S&C, i.e. conformal contact, contact with a sharp edge, and impact loads. The scenarios proposed in this work are fully described, making them easily reproducible. The agreement between results is discussed in the framework of the methods implemented in each code. The interaction between the rolling stock and the infrastructure plays a crucial role in railway vehicle dynamics. The standard approach consists of using a multibody formulation to model the railway vehicles running on simplified tracks. The track model can be rigid, if it comprises only a geometric description of the rail; semi-rigid, if it considers an elastic foundation underneath the rail; or a moving track model, if it comprises a track section underneath each wheelset traveling with the same speed of the vehicle. Despite their computational inexpensiveness, these approaches do not provide a complete representation of track flexibility and disregard coupling effects with the vehicle and among the track components. This work proposes a methodology to automatically generate finite element models of railway tracks comprising its relevant flexible components, i.e., rails, pads, fastening systems, sleepers, and ballast or slab. The finite element mesh is generated based on a parametric description of the track that allows an accurate description of its geometry, including curvature, cross-level, grade, and irregularities. The methodology is demonstrated with a case study in which a track with a complex geometry is loaded with two different approaches. The first approach prescribes moving loads, which is a typical approach used to design or analyze the infrastructure. The second approach applies loads retrieved from the dynamic analysis of a complete vehicle. The results show the benefits of this method and reveal that prescribed loading underestimates the forces resulting from the vehicle dynamics, which is an important issue on curved sections.
