The body burden of cadmium, as estimated from 24-h urine cadmium levels, was determined in 1 523 subjects who were not occupationally exposed and who lived in five areas of Belgium. Urinary cadmium levels differed significantly with place of residence. These differences persisted after standardization for the other significant determinants (i.e., age, body mass index, smoking habits, social class, alcohol consumption, and menopause). The highest 24-h urine cadmium levels were found in subjects who lived in areas that contained cadmium-polluted soils. The body burden overload has been attributed mainly to the consumption of locally grown vegetables and the use of contaminated well water for cooking and drinking. Blood cadmium levels were also dependent on place of residence. However, the geographical differences in blood cadmium did not parallel those of urine cadmium. The temporal association between peak expiratory flow rates (PEFRs) and ambient ozone (O3) was studied in a group of 287 children and 523 nonsmoking adults in Tucson. In children, noon PEFRs were decreased on days when there was a higher O3 concentration; children with physician-confirmed asthma experienced the greatest decrease in noon PEFR. Evening PEFR levels were also significantly related to O3 in children, especially asthmatics. Among adults, evening PEFRs were decreased in asthmatics who spent more time outdoors on days when O3 levels were higher. After we adjusted for covariates, significant effects of interactions of 8-h O3levels with particulate matter (PM10) and temperature on daily PEFR were found. There was some overnight effect of 8-h O3 on morning PEFRs. Studies on sulfur dioxide as an air pollutant have shown that the breathing route, either through the mouth, the nose, or both, can alter the effect of the pollutant on the lungs. There has been little research concerning the effects of inhaled ozone on lung function, in relation to the breathing route. Six young adult males were exposed on four occasions to ozone while exercising. The subjects wore a respiratory mouthpiece attached to a facemask. They did not wear noseclips during two of the exposures, allowing breathing through the mouth and/or nose, but wore noseclips during the other two exposures, forcing them to breath only through the mouth. No significant differences were found in lung function, ventilatory patterns, or subjective symptoms, according to breathing route. This study showed that the physiologic responses to ozone are not affected by the breathing route, either through the nose or mouth, during moderate and heavy continuous exercise.
