Classical machine learning has proven remarkably useful in post-processing quantum data, yet typical learning algorithms often require prior training to be effective. In this work, we employ a tensorial kernel support vector machine (TK-SVM) to analyze experimental data produced by trapped-ion quantum computers. This unsupervised method benefits from directly interpretable training parameters, allowing it to identify the non-trivial string-order characterizing symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases. We apply our technique to two examples: a spin-1/2 model and a spin-1 model, featuring the cluster state and the AKLT state as paradigmatic instances of SPT order, respectively. Using matrix product states, we generate a family of quantum circuits that host a trivial phase and an SPT phase, with a sharp phase transition between them. For the spin-1 case, we implement these circuits on two distinct trapped-ion machines based on qubits and qutrits. Our results demonstrate that the TK-SVM method successfully distinguishes the two phases across all noisy experimental datasets, highlighting its robustness and effectiveness in quantum data interpretation., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

Rydberg tweezer arrays provide a versatile platform to explore quantum magnets with dipolar XY or van-der-Waals Ising ZZ interactions. Here, we propose a scheme combining dipolar and van-der-Waals interactions between Rydberg atoms, where the amplitude of the latter can be greater than that of the former, realizing an extended Hubbard model with long-range tunnelings in optical tweezer arrays. For repulsive interactions, we predict the existence of a robust supersolid phase accessible in current Rydberg tweezer experiments on the triangular lattice supported by large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations based on explicitly calculated pair interactions for ${}^{87}$Rb and with a critical entropy per particle $S/N \approx 0.19$. Such a lattice supersolid is long-lived, found over a wide parameter range in an isotropic and flat two-dimensional geometry, and can be realized for 100s of particles. Fracton models host unconventional topological orders in three and higher dimensions and provide promising candidates for quantum memory platforms. Understanding their robustness against quantum fluctuations is an important task but also poses great challenges due to the lack of efficient numerical tools. In this work, we establish neural quantum states (NQS) as new tools to study phase transitions in these models. Exact and efficient parametrizations are derived for three prototypical fracton codes - the checkerboard and X-cube model, as well as Haah's code - both in terms of a restricted Boltzmann machine (RBM) and a correlation-enhanced RBM. We then adapt the correlation-enhanced RBM architecture to a perturbed checkerboard model and reveal its strong first-order phase transition between the fracton phase and a trivial field-polarizing phase. To this end, we simulate this highly entangled system on lattices of up to 512 qubits with high accuracy, representing a cutting-edge application of variational neural-network methods. The recent experimental detection of the onset of a dynamically prepared, gapped $Z_2$ quantum spin liquid on the ruby lattice brought the physics of frustrated magnetism and lattice gauge theory to Rydberg tweezer arrays (Semeghini et al, Science 374, 1242 (2021)). The thermodynamic properties of such models remain inadequately addressed, yet knowledge thereof is indispensable if one wants to prepare large, robust, and long-lived quantum spin liquids. Using large scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations we find in the PXP model a renormalized classical spin liquid with constant entropy density $S/N$ approaching $\ln(2)/6$ in the thermodynamic limit for all moderate and large values of the detuning $\delta$ and starting from $T/\Omega \sim 0.5$ (in units of the Rabi frequency $\Omega$) down to the lowest temperatures we could simulate, $T/\Omega \sim 0.01$. With Van der Waals interactions, constant entropy plateaus are still found but its value shifts with $\delta$. Even when ideal solids are insulating, their states with crystallographic defects may have superfluid properties. It became clear recently that edge dislocations in $^4$He featuring a combination of microscopic quantum roughness and superfluidity of their cores may represent a new paradigmatic class of quasi-one-dimensional superfluids. The new state of matter, termed transverse quantum fluid (TQF), is found in a variety of physical setups. The key ingredient defining the class of TQF systems is infinite compressibility, which is responsible for all other unusual properties such as the quadratic spectrum (or even the absence) of normal modes, irrelevance of the Landau criterion, off-diagonal long-range order at $T = 0$, and the exponential dependence of the phase slip probability on the inverse flow velocity. From a conceptual point of view, the TQF state is a striking demonstration of the conditional character of many dogmas associated with superfluidity, including the necessity of elementary excitations, in general, and the ones obeying Landau criterion in particular., Comment: Review for Annu. Machine learning algorithms thrive on large data sets of good quality. Here we show that they can also excel in a typical research setting with little data of limited quality, through an interplay of insights coming from machine, and human researchers. The question we address is the unsolved problem of ordering out of a spin-liquid phase described by an emergent rank-2 $U(1)$ gauge theory, as described by [H. Yan it et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 127203 (2020)]. Published Monte Carlo simulations for this problem are consistent with a strong first-order phase transition, out of the R2-U1 spin liquid, but were too noisy for the form of low-temperature order to be identified. Using a highly-interpretable machine learning approach based on a support vector machine with a tensorial kernel (TKSVM), we re-analyze this Monte Carlo data, gaining new information about the form of order that could in turn be interpreted by traditionally-trained physicists. We find that the low-temperature ordered phase is a form of hybrid nematic order with emergent $Z_2$ symmetry, which allows for a sub-extensive set of domain walls at zero energy. This complex form of order arises due to a subtle thermal order-by-disorder mechanism, that can be understood from the fluctuations of the tensor electric field of the parent rank-2 gauge theory. These results were obtained by a back-and-forth process which closely resembles a collaboration between human researchers and machines. We argue that this "collaborative" approach may provide a blueprint for solving other problems that have not yielded to human insights alone.

Lattice gauge theories (LGTs) were introduced in 1974 by Wilson to study quark confinement. These models have been shown to exhibit (de-)confined phases, yet it remains challenging to define experimentally accessible order parameters. Here we propose percolation-inspired order parameters (POPs) to probe confinement of dynamical matter in $\mathbb{Z}_2$ LGTs using electric field basis snapshots accessible to quantum simulators. We apply the POPs to study a classical $\mathbb{Z}_2$ LGT and find a confining phase up to temperature $T=\infty$ in 2D (critical $T_c$, i.e. finite-$T$ phase transition, in 3D) for any non-zero density of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ charges. Further, using quantum Monte Carlo we demonstrate that the POPs reproduce the square lattice Fradkin-Shenker phase diagram at $T=0$ and explore the phase diagram at $T>0$. The correlation length exponent coincides with the one of the 3D Ising universality class and we determine the POP critical exponent characterizing percolation. Our proposed POPs provide a geometric perspective of confinement and are directly accessible to snapshots obtained in quantum simulators, making them suitable as a probe for quantum spin liquids., Comment: 5+9 pages, 4+6 figures

Fracton codes host unconventional topological states of matter and are promising for fault-tolerant quantum computation due to their large coding space and strong resilience against decoherence and noise. In this work, we investigate the ground-state properties and phase transitions of two prototypical self-dual fracton spin models -- the tetrahedral Ising model and the fractal Ising model -- which correspond to error-correction procedures for the representative fracton codes of type-I and type-II, the checkerboard code and the Haah's code, respectively, in the error-free limit. They are endowed with exotic symmetry-breaking properties that contrast sharply with the spontaneous breaking of global symmetries and deconfinement transition of gauge theories. To show these unconventional behaviors, which are associated with sub-dimensional symmetries, we construct and analyze the order parameters, correlators, and symmetry generators for both models. Notably, the tetrahedral Ising model acquires an extended semi-local ordering moment, while the fractal Ising model fits into a polynomial ring representation and leads to a fractal order parameter. Numerical studies combined with analytical tools show that both models experience a strong first-order phase transition with an anomalous $L^{-(D-1)}$ scaling, despite the fractal symmetry of the latter. We study universal off-diagonal correlations in transverse quantum fluids (TQF) -- a new class of quasi-one-dimensional superfluids featuring long-range-ordered ground states. These exhibit unique self-similar space-time relations scaling with $x^2/D\tau$ that serve as fingerprints of the specific states. The results obtained with the effective field theory are found to be in perfect agreement with {\it ab initio} simulations of hard-core bosons on a lattice -- a simple microscopic realization of TQF. This allows an accurate determination -- at nonzero temperature and finite system size -- of such key ground-state properties as the condensate and superfluid densities, and characteristic parameter $D$.

Motivated by a recent experiment on a square-lattice Rydberg atom array realizing a long-range dipolar XY model [Chen et al., Nature (2023)], we numerically study the model's equilibrium properties. We obtain the phase diagram, critical properties, entropies, variance of the magnetization, and site-resolved correlation functions. We consider both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions and apply quantum Monte Carlo and pseudo-Majorana functional renormalization group techniques, generalizing the latter to a U(1) symmetric setting. Our simulations perform extensive thermometry for the first time in dipolar Rydberg atom arrays and establish conditions for adiabaticity and thermodynamic equilibrium. On the ferromagnetic side of the experiment, we determine the entropy per particle S/N~0.5, close to the one at the critical temperature, S_c/N = 0.585(15). The simulations suggest the presence of an out-of-equilibrium plateau at large distances in the correlation function, thus motivating future studies on the non-equilibrium dynamics of the system., Comment: 17 pages

The centred pyrochlore lattice is a novel geometrically frustrated lattice, realized in the metal-organic framework Mn(ta)$_2$ (arXiv:2203.08780) where the basic unit of spins is a five site centred tetrahedron. Here, we present an in-depth theoretical study of the $J_1-J_2$ classical Heisenberg model on this lattice, using a combination of mean-field analytical methods and Monte Carlo simulations. We find a rich phase diagram with low temperature states exhibiting ferrimagnetic order, partial ordering, and a highly degenerate spin liquid with distinct regimes of low temperature correlations. We discuss in detail how the regime displaying broadened pinch points in its spin structure factor is consistent with an effective description in terms of a fluid of interacting charges. We also show how this picture holds in two dimensions on the analogous centred kagome lattice and elucidate the connection to the physics of thin films in ($d+1$) dimensions. Furthermore, we show that a Coulomb phase can be stabilized on the centred pyrochlore lattice by the addition of further neighbour couplings. Spin squeezing is a form of entanglement that reshapes the quantum projection noise to improve measurement precision. Here, we provide numerical and analytic evidence for the following conjecture: any Hamiltonian exhibiting finite temperature, easy-plane ferromagnetism can be used to generate scalable spin squeezing, thereby enabling quantum-enhanced sensing. Our conjecture is guided by a connection between the quantum Fisher information of pure states and the spontaneous breaking of a continuous symmetry. We demonstrate that spin-squeezing exhibits a phase diagram with a sharp transition between scalable squeezing and non-squeezing. This transition coincides with the equilibrium phase boundary for XY order at a finite temperature. In the scalable squeezing phase, we predict a sensitivity scaling that lies in between the standard quantum limit and the scaling achieved in all-to-all coupled one-axis twisting models. A corollary of our conjecture is that short-ranged versions of two-axis twisting cannot yield scalable metrological gain. We study the phase diagram of the one-dimensional Bose-Fermi-Hubbard model at unit filling for the scalar bosons and half filling for the $S=1/2$ fermions using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The bare interaction between the fermions is set to zero. A central question of our study is what type of interactions can be induced between the fermions by the bosons, for both weak and strong interspecies coupling. We find that the induced interactions can lead to competing instabilities favoring phase separation, superconducting phases, and density wave structures, in many cases at work on length scales of more than 100 sites. Marginal bosonic superfluids with a density matrix decaying faster than what is allowed for pure bosonic systems with on-site interactions, are also found., Comment: 19 pages, 37 figures

We study the phase diagram of two different mixed-dimensional $t-J_z-J_{\perp}$-models on the square lattice, in which the hopping amplitude $t$ is only nonzero along the $x$-direction. In the first, bosonic, model, the spin exchange amplitude $J_{\perp}$ is negative and isotropic along the $x$ and $y$ directions of the lattice, and $J_z$ is isotropic and positive. The low-energy physics is characterized by spin-charge separation: the holes hop as free fermions in an easy-plane ferromagnetic background. In the second model, $J_{\perp}$ is restricted to the $x$-axis while $J_z$ remains isotropic and positive. The model is agnostic to particle statistics, and shows stripe patterns with anti-ferromagnetic N{\'e}el order at low temperature and high hole concentrations, in resemblance of the mixed-dimensional $t-J_z$ and $t-J$ models. At lower hole concentration, a very strong first order transition and hysteresis loop is seen extending to a remarkably high 14(1)% hole doping., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

We investigate two concrete cases of phase transitions breaking a subsystem symmetry. The models are two classical compass models featuring line-flip and plane-flip symmetries and correspond to special limits of a Heisenberg-Kitaev Hamiltonian on a cubic lattice. We show that these models experience a hybrid symmetry breaking by which the system display distinct symmetry broken patterns in different submanifolds. For instance, the system may look magnetic within a chain or plane but nematic-like when observing from one dimensionality higher. We fully characterize the symmetry-broken phases by a set of subdimensional order parameters and confirm numerically both cases undergo a non-standard first-order phase transition. Experimental progress in qubit manufacturing calls for the development of new theoretical tools to analyze quantum data. We show how an unsupervised machine-learning technique can be used to understand short-range entangled many-qubit systems using data of local measurements. The method successfully constructs the phase diagram of a cluster-state model and detects the respective order parameters of its phases, including string order parameters. For the toric code subject to external magnetic fields, the machine identifies the explicit forms of its two stabilizers. Prior information of the underlying Hamiltonian or the quantum states is not needed; instead, the machine outputs their characteristic observables. Microscopically understanding competing orders in strongly correlated systems is a key challenge in modern quantum many-body physics. For example, the origin of stripe order and its relation to pairing in the Fermi-Hubbard model remains one of the central questions, and may help to understand the origin of high-temperature superconductivity in cuprates. Here, we analyze stripe formation in the doped mixed-dimensional (mixD) variant of the $t-J$ model, where charge carriers are restricted to move only in one direction, whereas magnetic $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ interactions are two-dimensional. Using the density matrix renormalization group at finite temperature, we find a stable vertical stripe phase in the absence of pairing, featuring incommensurate magnetic order and long-range charge density wave profiles over a wide range of dopings. We find high critical temperatures on the order of the magnetic coupling $J$, hence being within reach of current quantum simulators. Snapshots of the many-body state, accessible to quantum simulators, reveal hidden spin correlations in the mixD setting, whereby antiferromagnetic correlations are enhanced when considering purely the magnetic background. The proposed model can be viewed as realizing a parent Hamiltonian of the stripe phase, whose hidden spin correlations lead to the predicted resilience against quantum and thermal fluctuations.

We investigate the ground-state nature of the honeycomb Kitaev-$\Gamma$ model in the material-relevant parameter regime through a combination of classical and quantum simulations. The classical model is imprinted with a tangle of highly structured spin double helices. This helix tangle exhibits $18$ inequivalent helical axes and features a spontaneous periodicity anisotropy and a ${\rm sgn}(\Gamma)$-determined chirality pattern. Infinite PEPS simulations with clusters up to $36$ sites identify hallmarks of this many-body order in the quantum spin-$1/2$ model. We present a novel and open-source implementation of the worm algorithm, which is an algorithm to simulate Bose-Hubbard and sign-positive spin models using a path integral representation of the partition function. The code can deal with arbitrary lattice structures and assumes spin-exchange terms, or bosonic hopping amplitudes, between nearest-neighbor sites, and local or nearest-neighbor interactions of the density-density type. We explicitly demonstrate the near-linear scaling of the algorithm with respect to the system volume and the inverse temperature and analyze the autocorrelation times in the vicinity of a U(1) second order phase transition. Geometric frustration inhibits magnetic systems from ordering, opening a window to unconventional phases of matter. The paradigmatic frustrated lattice in three dimensions to host a spin liquid is the pyrochlore, although there remain few experimental compounds thought to realize such a state. Here we go beyond the pyrochlore via molecular design in the metal-azolate framework [Mn(II)(ta)$_2$], which realizes a closely related centred pyrochlore lattice of Mn-spins with $S=5/2$. Despite a Curie-Weiss temperature of $-21$ K indicating the energy scale of magnetic interactions, [Mn(II)(ta)$_2$] orders at only 430 mK, putting it firmly in the category of highly frustrated magnets. Comparing magnetization and specific heat measurements to numerical results for a minimal Heisenberg model, we predict that this material displays distinct features of a classical spin liquid with a structure factor reflecting Coulomb physics in the presence of charges., Comment: Main: 6 pages, 3 figures. The unique superflow-through-solid effect observed in solid Helium-4 and attributed to the quasi-one-dimensional superfluidity along the dislocation cores exhibits two extraordinary features: (i) an exponentially strong suppression of the flow by a moderate increase in pressure, and (ii) an unusual temperature dependence of the flow rate with no analogy to any known system and in contradiction with the standard Luttinger liquid paradigm. Based on ab initio and model simulations, we argue that the two features are closely related: Thermal fluctuations of the shape of a superclimbing edge dislocation induce large, correlated, and asymmetric stress fields acting on the superfluid core. Fracton models provide examples of novel gapped quantum phases of matter that host intrinsically immobile excitations and therefore lie beyond the conventional notion of topological order. Here, we calculate optimal error thresholds for quantum error correcting codes based on fracton models. By mapping the error-correction process for bit-flip and phase-flip noises into novel statistical models with Ising variables and random multi-body couplings, we obtain models that exhibit an unconventional subsystem symmetry instead of a more usual global symmetry. We perform large-scale parallel tempering Monte Carlo simulations to obtain disorder-temperature phase diagrams, which are then used to predict optimal error thresholds for the corresponding fracton code. Remarkably, we found that the X-cube fracton code displays a minimum error threshold ($7.5\%$) that is much higher than 3D topological codes such as the toric code ($3.3\%$), or the color code ($1.9\%$). We use a recently developed interpretable and unsupervised machine-learning method, the tensorial kernel support vector machine (TK-SVM), to investigate the low-temperature classical phase diagram of a generalized Heisenberg-Kitaev-$\Gamma$ ($J$-$K$-$\Gamma$) model on a honeycomb lattice. Aside from reproducing phases reported by previous quantum and classical studies, our machine finds a hitherto missed nested zigzag-stripy order and establishes the robustness of a recently identified modulated $S_3 \times Z_3$ phase, which emerges through the competition between the Kitaev and $\Gamma$ spin liquids, against Heisenberg interactions. The results imply that, in the restricted parameter space spanned by the three primary exchange interactions -- $J$, $K$, and $\Gamma$, the representative Kitaev material $\alpha$-${\rm RuCl}_3$ lies close to the boundaries of several phases, including a simple ferromagnet, the unconventional $S_3 \times Z_3$ and nested zigzag-stripy magnets. We study the interplay of spin- and charge degrees of freedom in a doped Ising antiferromagnet, where the motion of charges is restricted to one dimension. The phase diagram of this mixed-dimensional $t - J_z$ model can be understood in terms of spin-less chargons coupled to a Z2 lattice gauge field. The antiferromagnetic couplings give rise to interactions between Z2 electric field lines which, in turn, lead to a robust stripe phase at low temperatures. At higher temperatures, a confined meson-gas phase is found for low doping whereas at higher doping values, a robust deconfined chargon-gas phase is seen which features hidden antiferromagnetic order. We confirm these phases in quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Our model can be implemented and its phases detected with existing technology in ultracold atom experiments. An unconventional magnet may be mapped onto a simple ferromagnet by the existence of a high-symmetry point. Knowledge of conventional ferromagnetic systems may then be carried over to provide insight into more complex orders. Here we demonstrate how an unsupervised and interpretable machine-learning approach can be used to search for potential high-symmetry points in unconventional magnets without any prior knowledge of the system. The method is applied to the classical Heisenberg-Kitaev model on a honeycomb lattice, where our machine learns the transformations that manifest its hidden $O(3)$ symmetry, without using data of these high-symmetry points. Moreover, we clarify that, in contrast to the stripy and zigzag orders, a set of $D_2$ and $D_{2h}$ ordering matrices provides a more complete description of the magnetization in the Heisenberg-Kitaev model. In addition, our machine also learns the local constraints at the phase boundaries, which manifest a subdimensional symmetry. We illustrate how the tensorial kernel support vector machine (TK-SVM) can probe the hidden multipolar orders and emergent local constraint in the classical kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We show that TK-SVM learns the finite-temperature phase diagram in an unsupervised way. Moreover, in virtue of its strong interpretability, it identifies the tensorial quadrupolar and octupolar orders, which define a biaxial $D_{3h}$ spin nematic, and the local constraint that underlies the selection of coplanar states. We then discuss the disorder hierarchy of the phases, which can be inferred from both the analytical order parameters and a SVM bias parameter. For completeness we mention that the machine also picks up the leading $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ correlations in the dipolar channel at very low temperature, which are however weak compared to the quadrupolar and octupolar orders. Kitaev materials are promising materials for hosting quantum spin liquids and investigating the interplay of topological and symmetry-breaking phases. We use an unsupervised and interpretable machine-learning method, the tensorial-kernel support vector machine, to study the honeycomb Kitaev-$\Gamma$ model in a magnetic field. Our machine learns the global classical phase diagram and the associated analytical order parameters, including several distinct spin liquids, two exotic $S_3$ magnets, and two modulated $S_3 \times Z_3$ magnets. We find that the extension of Kitaev spin liquids and a field-induced suppression of magnetic order already occur in the large-$S$ limit, implying that critical parts of the physics of Kitaev materials can be understood at the classical level. Moreover, the two $S_3 \times Z_3$ orders are induced by competition between Kitaev and $\Gamma$ spin liquids and feature a different type of spin-lattice entangled modulation, which requires a matrix description instead of scalar phase factors. Recent experiments on twisted bilayer graphene show the urgent need for establishing a low-energy lattice model for the system. We use the constrained random phase approximation to study the interaction parameters of such models taking into account screening from the moire bands left outside the model space. Based on an atomic-scale tight-binding model, we develop a numerically tractable approximation to the polarization function and study its behavior for different twist angles. We find that the polarization has three different momentum regimes. For small momenta, the polarization is quadratic, leading to a linear dielectric function expected for a two-dimensional dielectric material. For large momenta, the polarization becomes independent of the twist angle and approaches that of uncoupled graphene layers. In the intermediate momentum regime, the dependence on the twist-angle is strong. Close to the largest magic angle the dielectric function peaks at a momentum of $~1/(4 \: nm)$ attaining values of 25, meaning very strong screening at intermediate distances. We also calculate the effective screened Coulomb interaction in real space and give estimates for the on-site and extended interaction terms for the recently developed hexagonal-lattice model. For free-standing TBG the effective interaction decays slower than $1/r$ at intermediate distances $r$, while it remains essentially unscreened at large enough $r$.

Machine-learning techniques have proved successful in identifying ordered phases of matter. However, it remains an open question how far they can contribute to the understanding of phases without broken symmetry, such as spin liquids. Here we demonstrate how a machine learning approach can automatically learn the intricate phase diagram of a classical frustrated spin model. The method we employ is a support vector machine equipped with a tensorial kernel and a spectral graph analysis which admits its applicability in an effectively unsupervised context. Thanks to the interpretability of the machine we are able to infer, in closed form, both order parameter tensors of phases with broken symmetry, and the local constraints which signal an emergent gauge structure, and so characterize classical spin liquids. The method is applied to the classical XXZ model on the pyrochlore lattice where it distinguishes---among others---between a hidden biaxial spin nematic phase and several different classical spin liquids. The results are in full agreement with a previous analysis by Taillefumier \emph{et al.} [Phys. Rev. X 7, 041057 (2017)], but go further by providing a systematic hierarchy between disordered regimes, and establishing the physical relevance of the susceptibilities associated with the local constraints. In a number of physical situations, from polarons to Dirac liquids and to non-Fermi liquids, one encounters the "beyond quasiparticles" regime, in which the inelastic scattering rate exceeds the thermal energy of quasiparticles. Transport in this regime cannot be described by the kinetic equation. We employ the Diagrammatic Monte Carlo method to study the mobility of a Fr\"{o}hlich polaron in this regime and discover a number of non-perturbative effects: a strong violation of the Mott-Ioffe-Regel criterion at intermediate and strong couplings, a mobility minimum at $T \sim \Omega$ in the strong-coupling limit ($\Omega$ is the optical mode frequency), a substantial delay in the onset of an exponential dependence of the mobility for $T<\Omega$ at intermediate coupling, and complete smearing of the Drude peak at strong coupling. Machine-learning techniques are evolving into a subsidiary tool for studying phase transitions in many-body systems. However, most studies are tied to situations involving only one phase transition and one order parameter. Systems that accommodate multiple phases of coexisting and competing orders, which are common in condensed matter physics, remain largely unexplored from a machine-learning perspective. In this paper, we investigate multiclassification of phases using support vector machines (SVMs) and apply a recently introduced kernel method for detecting hidden spin and orbital orders to learn multiple phases and their analytical order parameters. Our focus is on multipolar orders and their tensorial order parameters whose identification is difficult with traditional methods. The importance of interpretability is emphasized for physical applications of multiclassification. Furthermore, we discuss an intrinsic parameter of SVM, the bias, which allows for a special interpretation in the classification of phases, and its utility in diagnosing the existence of phase transitions. We study the finite-temperature superfluid transition in a modified two-dimensional (2D) XY model with power-law distributed "scratch"-like bond disorder. As its exponent decreases, the disorder grows stronger and the mechanism driving the superfluid transition changes from conventional vortex-pair unbinding to a strong randomness criticality (termed scratched-XY criticality) characterized by a non-universal jump of the superfluid stiffness. The existence of the scratched-XY criticality at finite temperature and its description by an asymptotically exact semi-renormalization group theory, previously developed for the superfluid-insulator transition in one-dimensional disordered quantum systems, is numerically proven by designing a model with minimal finite size effects. We introduce the method of stochastic lists to deal with a multi-variable positive function, defined by a self-consistent equation, typical for certain problems in physics and mathematics. In this approach, the function's properties are represented statistically by lists containing a large collection of sets of coordinates (or "walkers") that are distributed according to the function's value. The coordinates are generated stochastically by the Metropolis algorithm and may replace older entries according to some protocol. While stochastic lists offer a solution to the impossibility of efficiently computing and storing multi-variable functions without a systematic bias, extrapolation in the inverse of the number of walkers is usually difficult, even though in practice very good results are found already for short lists. This situation is reminiscent of diffusion Monte Carlo, and is hence generic for all population-based methods. We illustrate the method by computing the lowest-order vertex corrections in Hedin's scheme for the Fr\"ohlich polaron and the ground state energy and wavefunction of the Heisenberg model in two dimensions., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

The search of unconventional magnetic and nonmagnetic states is a major topic in the study of frustrated magnetism. Canonical examples of those states include various spin liquids and spin nematics. However, discerning their existence and the correct characterization is usually challenging. Here we introduce a machine-learning protocol that can identify general nematic order and their order parameter from seemingly featureless spin configurations, thus providing comprehensive insight on the presence or absence of hidden orders. We demonstrate the capabilities of our method by extracting the analytical form of nematic order parameter tensors up to rank 6. The interplay between magnetism and doping is at the origin of exotic strongly correlated electronic phases and can lead to novel forms of magnetic ordering. One example is the emergence of incommensurate spin-density waves with a wave vector that does not match the reciprocal lattice. In one dimension this effect is a hallmark of Luttinger liquid theory, which also describes the low energy physics of the Hubbard model. Here we use a quantum simulator based on ultracold fermions in an optical lattice to directly observe such incommensurate spin correlations in doped and spin-imbalanced Hubbard chains using fully spin and density resolved quantum gas microscopy. Doping is found to induce a linear change of the spin-density wave vector in excellent agreement with Luttinger theory predictions. For non-zero polarization we observe a decrease of the wave vector with magnetization as expected from the Heisenberg model in a magnetic field. We trace the microscopic origin of these incommensurate correlations to holes, doublons and excess spins which act as delocalized domain walls for the antiferromagnetic order. Finally, when inducing interchain coupling we observe fundamentally different spin correlations around doublons indicating the formation of a magnetic polaron.

We provide a full and unbiased solution to the Dyson-Schwinger equation illustrated for $\phi^4$ theory in 2D. It is based on an exact treatment of the functional derivative $\partial \Gamma / \partial G$ of the 4-point vertex function $\Gamma$ with respect to the 2-point correlation function $G$ within the framework of the homotopy analysis method (HAM) and the Monte Carlo sampling of rooted tree diagrams. The resulting series solution in deformations can be considered as an asymptotic series around $G=0$ in a HAM control parameter $c_0G$, or even a convergent one up to the phase transition point if shifts in $G$ can be performed (such as by summing up all ladder diagrams). We extend the self-energy functional theory (SFT) to the case of interacting lattice bosons in the presence of symmetry breaking and quenched disorder. The self-energy functional we derive depends only on the self-energies of the disorder-averaged propagators, allowing for the construction of general non-perturbative approximations. Using a simple single-site reference system with only three variational parameters, we are able to reproduce numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) results on local observables of the Bose-Hubbard model with box disorder with high accuracy. At strong interactions, the phase boundaries are reproduced qualitatively but shifted with respect to the ones observed with QMC due to the extremely low condensate fraction in the superfluid phase. Deep in the strongly-disordered weakly-interacting regime, the simple reference system employed is insufficient and no stationary solutions can be found within its restricted variational subspace. By systematically analyzing thermodynamical observables and the spectral function, we find that the strongly-interacting Bose glass is characterized by different regimes, depending on which local occupations are activated as a function of the disorder strength. We find that the particles delocalize into isolated superfluid lakes over a strongly localized background around maximally-occupied sites whenever these sites are particularly rare. Our results indicate that the transition from the Bose glass to the superfluid phase around unit filling at strong interactions is driven by the percolation of superfluid lakes which form around doubly occupied sites., Comment: 34 pages, 5 figures

These notes are intended as a detailed discussion on how to implement the diagrammatic Monte Carlo method for a physical system which is technically simple and where it works extremely well, namely the Fr\"ohlich polaron problem. Sampling schemes for the Green function as well as the self-energy in the bare and skeleton (bold) expansion are disclosed in full detail. We discuss the Monte Carlo updates, possible implementations in terms of common data structures, as well as techniques on how to perform the Fourier transforms for functions with discontinuities. Control over the variety of parameters, especially in the bold scheme, is demonstrated. Sample codes are made available online along with extensive documentation. Towards the end, we discuss various extensions of the method and their applications. We study the ground-state phase diagram of the strongly interacting Harper-Hofstadter-Mott model at quarter flux on a quasi-one-dimensional lattice consisting of a single magnetic flux quantum in $y$-direction. In addition to superfluid phases with various density patterns, the ground-state phase diagram features quasi-one-dimensional analogues of fractional quantum Hall phases at fillings $\nu=1/2$ and $3/2$, where the latter is only found thanks to the hopping anisotropy and the quasi-one-dimensional geometry. At integer fillings - where in the full two-dimensional system the ground-state is expected to be gapless - we observe gapped non-degenerate ground-states: At $\nu=1$ it shows an odd 'fermionic' Hall conductance, while the Hall response at $\nu=2$ consists of the transverse transport of a single particle-hole pair, resulting in a net zero Hall conductance. The results are obtained by exact diagonalization and in the reciprocal mean-field approximation.

Polyhedral nematics are examples of exotic orientational phases that possess a complex internal symmetry, representing highly non-trivial ways of rotational symmetry breaking, and are subject to current experimental pursuits in colloidal and molecular systems. The classification of these phases has been known for a long time, however, their transitions to the disordered isotropic liquid phase remain largely unexplored, except for a few symmetries. In this work, we utilize a recently introduced non-Abelian gauge theory to explore the nature of the underlying nematic-isotropic transition for all three-dimensional polyhedral nematics. The gauge theory can readily be applied to nematic phases with an arbitrary point-group symmetry, including those where traditional Landau methods and the associated lattice models may become too involved to implement owing to a prohibitive order-parameter tensor of high rank or (the absence of) mirror symmetries. By means of exhaustive Monte Carlo simulations, we find that the nematic-isotropic transition is generically first-order for all polyhedral symmetries. Moreover, we show that this universal result is fully consistent with our expectation from a renormalization group approach, as well as with other lattice models for symmetries already studied in the literature. We argue that extreme fine tuning is required to promote those transitions to second order ones. We study the phase diagram of the two-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model with spin-dependent anisotropic hopping at half-filling. The system develops Ising antiferromagnetic long-range order already at infinitesimal repulsive interaction strength in the ground state. Outside the perturbative regime, unbiased predictions for the critical temperatures of the Ising antiferromagnet are made for representative interaction values by a variety of state-of-the-art quantum Monte Carlo methods, including the diagrammatic Monte Carlo, continuous-time determinantal Monte Carlo and path-integral Monte Carlo methods. We present the construction and stochastic summation of rooted-tree diagrams, based on the expansion of a root finding algorithm applied to the Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSEs). The mathematical formulation shows superior convergence properties compared to the bold diagrammatic Monte Carlo approach and the developed algorithm allows one to tackle generic high-dimensional integral equations, to avoid the curse of dealing explicitly with high-dimensional objects and to access non-perturbative regimes. The sign problem remains the limiting factor, but it is not found to be worse than in other approaches. We derive the reciprocal cluster mean-field method to study the strongly-interacting bosonic Harper-Hofstadter-Mott model. The system exhibits a rich phase diagram featuring band insulating, striped superfluid, and supersolid phases. Furthermore, for finite hopping anisotropy we observe gapless uncondensed liquid phases at integer fillings, which are analyzed by exact diagonalization. The liquid phases at fillings 1 and 3 exhibit the same band fillings as the fermionic integer quantum Hall effect, while the phase at filling 2 is CT-symmetric with zero charge response. We discuss how these phases become gapped on a quasi-one-dimensional cylinder, leading to a quantized Hall response, which we characterize by introducing a suitable measure for non-trivial many-body topological properties. Incompressible metastable states at fractional filling are also observed, indicating competing fractional quantum Hall phases. The combination of reciprocal cluster mean-field and exact diagonalization yields a promising method to analyze the properties of bosonic lattice systems with non-trivial unit cells in the thermodynamic limit., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

We formulate the problem of numerical analytic continuation in a way that lets us draw meaningful conclusions about properties of the spectral function based solely on the input data. Apart from ensuring consistency with the input data (within their error bars) and the {\it a priori} and {\it a posteriori} (conditional) constraints, it is crucial to reliably characterize the accuracy---or even ambiguity---of the output. We explain how these challenges can be met with two approaches: stochastic optimization with consistent constraints and the modified maximum entropy method. We perform illustrative tests for spectra with a double-peak structure, where we critically examine which spectral properties are accessible and which ones are lost. The repulsive Hubbard Hamiltonian is one of the foundational models describing strongly correlated electrons and is believed to capture essential aspects of high temperature superconductivity. Ultracold fermions in optical lattices allow for the simulation of the Hubbard Hamiltonian with a unique control over kinetic energy, interactions and doping. A great challenge is to reach the required low entropy and to observe antiferromagnetic spin correlations beyond nearest neighbors, for which quantum gas microscopes are ideal. Here we report on the direct, single-site resolved detection of antiferromagnetic correlations extending up to three sites in spin-$1/2$ Hubbard chains, which requires an entropy well below $s^*=\ln(2)$. Finally, the simultaneous detection of spin and density opens the route towards the study of the interplay between magnetic ordering and doping in various dimensions., Comment: Updated author list

Applying Feynman diagrammatics to non-fermionic strongly correlated models with local constraints might seem generically impossible for two separate reasons: (i) the necessity to have a Gaussian (non-interacting) limit on top of which the perturbative diagrammatic expansion is generated by Wick's theorem, and (ii) the Dyson's collapse argument implying that the expansion in powers of coupling constant is divergent. We show that for arbitrary classical lattice models both problems can be solved/circumvented by reformulating the high-temperature expansion (more generally, any discrete representation of the model) in terms of Grassmann integrals. Discrete variables residing on either links, plaquettes, or sites of the lattice are associated with the Grassmann variables in such a way that the partition function (and correlations) of the original system and its Grassmann-field counterpart are identical. The expansion of the latter around its Gaussian point generates Feynman diagrams. A proof-of-principle implementation is presented for the classical 2D Ising model. We show how the thermodynamic properties of large many-body localized systems can be studied using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. To this end we devise a heuristic way of constructing local integrals of motion of very high quality, which are added to the Hamiltonian in conjunction with Lagrange multipliers. The ground state simulation of the shifted Hamiltonian corresponds to a high-energy state of the original Hamiltonian in case of exactly known local integrals of motion. We can show that the inevitable mixing between eigenstates as a consequence of non-perfect integrals of motion is weak enough such that the characteristics of many-body localized systems are not averaged out in our approach, unlike the standard ensembles of statistical mechanics. Our method paves the way to study higher dimensions and indicates that a full many-body localized phase in 2d, where (nearly) all eigenstates are localized, is likely to exist., Comment: 4+1 pages, 6 figures

The ground state of a two-dimensional (2D) system of Bose particles of spin zero, interacting via a repulsive Gaussian-Core potential, has been investigated by means of Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The quantum phase diagram is qualitatively identical to that of 2D Yukawa bosons. While the system is a fluid at all densities for weak coupling, in the strong coupling regime it transitions upon compression from a low density superfluid to a crystal, and then into a reentrant superfluid phase.
