Pollen micromorphology of nine species of the genus Tulipa (including three subgenera Tulipa, Clusiana, and Eriostemones) and one species from the genus Amana were examined using light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Moreover, the pollen wall ultrastructure of five selected taxa from the studied species of Tulipa and one species of Amana were examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Pollen micromorphology (especially exine ornamentation, sulcus margin and sulcus membrane ornamentation, operculum ornamentation) and pollen wall ultrastructure (sporoderm thickness, tectum/foot layer ratio, number of intine layers in sulcus membrane region) varied in the studied taxa. A dendrogram of the pollen micromorphological characteristics (obtained from LM and SEM observations) distinguished three pollen types and six subtypes. Amana edulis (subtype A) and Tulipa biebersteiniana (subtype B) were placed in pollen type 1. Tulipa tetraphylla (subgenus Eriostemones) with Tulipa urumiensis and Tulipa kolpakowskiana (subgenus Tulipa) were placed in pollen type 2. Tulipa clusiana (subgenus Clusiana) and Tulipa suaveolens (subgenus Tulipa) belonged to pollen type 3. Information from pollen wall ultrastructure provided better differentiation of these taxa for better taxonomical resolution. Pollen micromorphology along with ultrastructure can be useful for better understanding the systematic affinities of the species in the genus Tulipa and its relation with the genus Amana and for establishing subgenus rank for T. biebersteiniana and T. clusiana. Pollen micromorphology and sporoderm ultrastructure of 10 species of the genus Gagea sensu lato (including Lloydia) were examined by light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The results showed variation in all quantitative characters of pollen micromorphology. In terms of qualitative characters, oblate pollen shape and two pollen types (medium and large) were seen. Exine ornamentation of the equatorial surface differed from that of the sulcus margin region. Intine ornamentation in the sulcus region was similar in all taxa. Furthermore, the situation of the furrow among cristates and granulates in muri differed, as did the lumina connections. The qualitative and quantitative characters of the pollen sporoderm, such as the presence or absence of endexine, number of intine layers in the sulcus region, and sporoderm thickness, also varied. A dendrogram of all qualitative and quantitative palynological characters, created by the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) based on Euclidean distances, identified six pollen types. Palynological types strongly supported the transfer of Lloydia to Gagea. However, the palynological dendrogram did not support reducing the number of sections in these taxa. Pollen micromorphology and ultrastructure of fifteen species from the genera Cardiocrinum, Fritillaria, Lilium, and Notholirion were examined by Light Microscopy (LM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Our results showed that all quantitative characters of pollen micromorphology (LM and SEM observation) varied in the studied taxa. Pollen grains in all studied species were oblate except Notholirion bulbuliferum with oblate-spheroidal. The studied species of Fritillaria had medium pollen type and the rest showed large. Although, two major exine ornamentation in central region of equatorial surface and sulcus margin region were seen such as reticulate (taxa of Cardiocrinum) and reticulum-cristatum (taxa of genera of Lilium, and Notholirion). These characters were varied in taxa of Fritillaria in both regions (foveolate-rugulate, reticulate and foveolate). Also, there were three sulcus membrane ornamentation including striate-tuberculate (Fritillaria gibbosa), tuberculate (Lilium lophophorum and with the rest studied taxa of Fritillaria), and macrotuberculate (the genera Cardiocrinum, Lilium, and Notholirion). Moreover, three kinds of lumina types and two kinds of muri types were detected among these taxa. The qualitative and quantitative characters of the pollen wall were varied such as kind of endexine situation, number of intine layers in the sulcus membrane region, and thickness of elements from the pollen wall. Dendrogram of all qualitative and quantitative palynological characters constructed two pollen groups, five pollen types, and four pollen subtypes. The palynological dendrogram verified that Nomocharis is part of genus Lilium. Palynological types supported the heterogeneous phylogenetic situation of Cardiocrinum. The availability of bee forage limits honeybee productivity and is very important for beekeepers. Therefore, the current study aimed to identify the major botanical resources of honeybee, A. mellifera scutellata, in Southwest Ethiopia. Between October 2019 and October 2020, 69 group discussions (8–12 beekeepers), field observations, and pollen analysis were used to collect data. A total of 72 honey samples were collected from five districts at different seasons for pollen analysis. Most of the honey samples tested (93.06%) were multifloral, while 6.94% were monofloral. Melissopalynological analysis indicated that Eucalyptus camaldulensis (52.02%) was the predominant pollen type and is considered monofloral honey. Terminalia spp. (25.96%), Guizotia spp. (17.80%), and Bidens spp. (17.61%) were secondary pollen types and classified as multifloral honey. Terminalia spp., Guizotia spp., Vernonia spp., Bidens ssp., Plantago spp., and E. camaldulensis were pollen types recorded in honey samples in all agroecologies. Beekeepers ranked Schefflera abyssinica, Vernonia amygdalina, and Cordia africana as the first source of pollen and nectar for honeybees in highland, midland, and lowland, respectively. Palynomorphological study of propolis and honey from the regions of the North Caucasus and the Lower Volga Russian Federation and Republic of Abkhazia (RA) has been held. Propolis samples have been obtained in Republic of North Ossetia-Alania (RNO-A), in Volgograd and Saratov regions of Russian Federation and RA at 2010 - 2015 years. Honey samples have been obtained in RNO-A and Republic of Ingushetia (RI) at 2015 year. Microscopy, determination of pollen types (PTs) and counting of pollen grains (PGs) carried out in 3-fold repetition on temporary preparations with a cover glass area of 24 x 24 mm under a light microscope. An analysis of the palynological spectra of propolis and honey samples showed the dominance of pollen from plants of the Asteraceae family. Propolis always contained pollen from several PT, a third of the samples of honey were monofloral. An analysis of the occurrence of PT was carried out. All propolis samples aligned according to the degree of contamination. Samples of honey can differ greatly in the wind-pollinated component.

Pollen loads of Trigona iridipennis Smith were analyzed on a comparative basis between rural and semi-urban areas of Paschim Medinipur district, West Bengal in order to explore the botanical origin of pollen loads and pollen foraging activity of the bee species. Altogether 72 plants belonging to 37 families were recognized as pollen resources for the bee species. Major pollen contributing families were Myrtaceae, Fabaceae, Arecaceae and Cannabaceae. Very frequent pollen types were Borassus flabellifer, Brassica juncea, Delonix regia, Eucalyptus tereticornis, Syzygium cumini and Trema orientalis. The diversity of pollen type remains higher in rural areas of Garhbeta in comparison to the semi-urban areas of Midnapore town. Majority of natural forest trees, weeds and cultivated crops those were detected from rural areas were not recognized within the pollen spectrum in semi-urban areas of Midnapore town. In general, we found that T. iridipennis preferred tree habit with small sized flowers as a source of pollen. The most common shapes of the bee visited flowers were dish-like and brush-like, and the preferred flower colours were yellow, white or cream. Foraging activity of the bee species does not significantly differ between the two regions. However, activity differed significantly according to daytime hours as well as month wise in both the sites. Maximum activity observed in late morning, while early morning showed the lowest. Monthly activity was higher during the months of November to April, whereas activity was very low in July and August. Members of the Chenopodiaceae are the most dominant elements in the central Asian desert. The different genera and species within this family are common in desert vegetation types. Should it prove possible to link pollen types in this family to specific desert vegetation, it would be feasible to trace vegetation successions in the geological past. Nevertheless, the morphological similarity of pollen grains in the Chenopodiaceae rarely permits identification at the generic level. Although some pollen classifications of Chenopodiaceae have been proposed, none of them tried to link pollen types to specific desert vegetation types in order to explore their ecological significance. Based on the pollen morphological characters of 13 genera and 24 species within the Chenopodiaceae of eastern central Asia, we provide a new pollen classification of this family with six pollen types and link them to those plant communities dominated by Chenopodiaceae, for example, temperate dwarf semi‐arboreal desert (Haloxylon type), temperate succulent halophytic dwarf semi‐shrubby desert (Suaeda, Kalidium, and Atriplex types), temperate annual graminoid desert (Kalidium type), temperate semi‐shrubby and dwarf semi‐shrubby desert (Kalidium, Iljini, and Haloxylon types), and alpine cushion dwarf semi‐shrubby desert (Krascheninnikovia type). This paper aims to identify the botanical origin of pollen loads collected by Apis mellifera L. in Canavieiras municipality, Bahia state. It provides a list of polliniferous plant species from the Atlantic Forest biome that are important for the development of regional apiculture. Using the acetolysis method, 35 bee-pollen samples were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Results showed that pollen types Elaeis (23.99%), Mimosa pudica (22.78%) and Cecropia (13.68%) were the most abundant among the samples. These also showed the highest relative frequencies of the material studied and were important pollen sources for bees in the study area.O presente trabalho teve por objetivo identificar a origem botânica das bolotas de pólen coletadas pelas abelhas Apis mellifera L. no município de Canavieiras, Bahia, gerando uma lista de plantas poliníferas pertencentes ao bioma Mata Atlântica e importantes para o desenvolvimento da apicultura regional. Foram analisadas palinologicamente 35 amostras de pólen apícola, utilizando-se o processo de acetólise para, em seguida, serem feitas análises qualitativas e quantitativas. Os resultados revelaram que os tipos polínicos Elaeis (23,99%), Mimosa pudica (22,78%) e Cecropia (13,68%) foram os mais abundantes no pólen apícola analisado. Estes tipos polínicos também apresentaram as maiores frequências relativas de todo o material estudado e representam importantes plantas fontes de pólen para as abelhas na área estudada.

Palynological evidences (pollen and spores) have been used to study mangrove diversity and vegetation fluctuation at coastal zone sites at Muktiharja, Kemijen Semarang , province of Central Java. Data was collected in April 2nd to April 17th 2006 following transect method, for sediments sampling used surface subsurface sampling method (depth in 25cm). Pollen preparation used Acetolysis method. The result showed that mangrove forest in the coastal zone of Muktiharja, Kemijen Semarang was dominated by Rhizophoarceae pollen type (included Rhizophora genus : Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizophora stylosa dan Rhizophora apiculata). Vegetation of mangrove forrest in this bay was fluctuated which terrestrial climate was influenced in this mangrove forrest.

Objetivou-se, na presente pesquisa, desenvolvida com amostras de méis de Apis mellifera coletadas diretamente dos produtores de diversos municípios do estado de Ceará, Brasil, verificar, com base em características físico-químicas, como se agrupam as amostras de méis. Dentre as 52 amostras de méis analisadas as que continham pólen de Serjania sp. como dominante ou acessório, formam um subgrupo distinto quanto aos caracteres físico-químicos, o que confirma que a origem floral interfere decisivamente nas características dos méis. Pela análise dos componentes principais, pôde-se verificar que os caracteres que mais influenciaram no agrupamento das amostras de méis foram acidez e índice de formol no eixo X e pH e cinzas no eixo Y.This paper was carried out to determine how the honey samples of the State of Ceará, Brazil may be grouped, based on the physicochemical composition of the honey. The samples were collected in different municipalities. Among the 52 honey samples analyzed it was observed that the samples which have Sejania sp. as dominant or accessory pollen form a different sub-group based on the physicochemical parameters. The results confirm that the honey bee composition is influenced by the plant nectar. The grouping of the honey samples was mostly influenced by acidity and formol index on the X axis, and pH and ashes, on the Y axis.

Knowledge about the botanical source of honey is very important for the beekeeper while it indicates adequate and abundant supply sources of nectar and pollen for the bees, thus contributing toward improved yield. The present study means to identify the pollen types occurring in 58 samples of honey produced in two states of the northeastern region of Brazil, Piauí (38 samples) and Ceará (20 samples), and to verify the potential of the honey plants during the months of February to August. The samples were obtained directly from beekeepers in each state and analyzed at the Apiculture Laboratory of the Entomology Section of Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz", USP, Piracicaba, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The pollen analysis was performed using the acetolysis method. The samples were submitted to both a qualitative and a quantitative analysis. The dominant pollen in the State of Ceará is from Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia, M. verrucosa, Borreria verticillata, Serjania sp., and a Fabaceae pollen type, while in the State of Piauí it is from Piptadenia sp., M. caesalpiniaefolia, M. verrucosa, Croton urucurana and Tibouchina sp.O conhecimento da origem botânica do mel é de grande importância para o apicultor por indicar fontes adequadas e de abundante suprimento de néctar e pólen para as abelhas, contribuindo, desta forma, para uma melhor produção. O presente estudo teve como objetivo identificar os tipos polínicos em 58 amostras de méis produzidos em dois estados da região nordeste do Brasil, Piauí (38 amostras) e Ceará (20 amostras), verificando o potencial das plantas apícolas durante os meses de fevereiro a agosto. Studies performed using interaction networks have helped in the understanding of mutualistic relationships, allowing for the representation of complex community structure. Conservation of the species that form the networks is a prerequisite for the conservation of the very networks. Pollen analysis allows knowledge of bee visitation history and is a complementary tool in studying interactions between bees and flowers. This research had as its aim the mapping of interactions between Eugenia uniflora flowers and floral visitor bees and with palynological studies also know the other plants that interact to form the network. Twenty-nine bee species were found with pollen load and 20 pollen types, and E. uniflora was the only plant that interacted with all bee species. Studied networks are nested, revealing stability for the community of bees and plants. E. uniflora flowers are an important source of resources to visiting bees, and this plant native to the Atlantic Forest is contributing to the stability of biodiversity of the bees in these areas. The palynology of 16 species of Aizoaceae and Molluginaceae distributed in Egypt and Sudan were studied by light microscopes (LM) and scanning electron microscopes (SEM). Pollen is generally 3-zonocolpate, suboblate, oblate-spheroidal, prolate-spheroidal, subprolate or prolate. The polar axis ranges from 16.9 to 44.4 μm, while the equatorial diameter ranges from 15.3 to 33.2 μm. Pollen shape is trilobate, triangular or circular in polar outline and elliptic, ovate or apiculate in equatorial outline. Sculpturing is microechinate, punctate-scabrate, scabrate, sparsely punctate; microechinate, reticulate-striate or microechinate, psilate. Six pollen types were recognized, viz. theLimeumpollen type, theMesembryanthemum nodiflorumpollen type, theMollugopollen type, theMesembryanthemum crystallinumpollen type, theZaleyapollen type and theAizoon hispanicumpollen type. Descriptions of each type and a key to investigated taxa, as well SEM micrographs of pollen types, are provided. Moreover, numerical analysis on the basis of Unpaired Group Method of Average (UPGMA) clustering and factor loadings to pollen data led us to recognize six major clades. Pollen particles enter indoor areas through various routes, negatively affecting indoor air quality and human health. Therefore, it is important to measure the indoor and outdoor concentrations of pollen and to study the factors influencing the indoor/outdoor pollen concentration (I/O) ratio. Here, we review recent developments in pollen research, focusing on experimental studies on the I/O ratio and contributing factors, and suggest avenues for further research. Based on a literature search of 108 publications, the development, basic principles, advantages, and disadvantages of pollen samplers are summarized, and factors influencing the I/O ratio are summarized. The results showed that pollen type, ventilation, indoor ornamental plants, and human activities significantly affected the value of the I/O ratio, which mainly ranged from 0 to 0.5. Values of I/O ratio of 0.5–1 and higher were mainly found in studies with pollen diameters ranging from 15–30 μm. A window that opened perpendicular to the dominant outdoor wind direction and a larger window opening area also increased the I/O ratio. Outdoor pollen can adhere to human surfaces and enter a room through human activity, increasing the I/O ratio. The results of this study will help other researchers to understand the state of research on pollen I/O ratios and hopefully provide suggestions for future research directions. In this study, we examined the pollen morphology of the platycodonoid group in Campanulaceae s. str. using a scanning electronic microscope. We used pollen grains of 25 accessions representing 24 species of the Codonopsis complex (including Campanumoea, Cyclocodon, Leptocodon, and all three subgenera of Codonopsis), which is extremely controversial among authors for taxonomic treatment. Pollen morphology of all the other genera in the group observed by previous authors is taken into account in our discussion. A total of nine pollen types with two subtypes in the group were recognized and named for the first time. Molecular and morphological data imply that each pollen type corresponds to a natural group at generic level, and thus the mergence of Leptocodon with Codonopsis and the restoration of Cyclocodon as a separate genus are justifiable, and Codonopsis subg. Pseudocodonopsis, subg. Obconicicapsula, and two species of Codonopsis subg. Codonopsis ( C. purpurea and C. chimiliensis) may be better classified as three independent genera separate from the core Codonopsis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A morphometrical study of pollen grains using scanning electron microscopy was performed in seven genera belonging to subtribe Artemisiinae (Anthemideae). Forty-six populations representing 40 species were considered, mainly from the genus Ajania (31 populations studied of 25 species). This work also includes observations on the genera Brachanthemum, Cancrinia, Crossostephium, Dendranthema, Elachanthemum, Hippolytia, Kaschgaria, Poljakovia and Stilpnolepis. Most data presented here constitute the first pollen observation for some species and genera ( Cancrinia and Poljakovia). Two different pollen exine ornamentations are confirmed for the tribe, Anthemis-type (echinate) and Artemisia-type (microechinate), a result consistent with previous studies. The Artemisia-type is exclusive to the subtribe, whereas the Anthemis-type is found present outside Artemisiinae, suggesting that it may represent the ancestral character state for the group. These pollen types appear to be clearly differentiated on the basis of their size and exine ornamentation. Their phylogenetic distribution in Artemisiinae also generally segregates them: the Anthemis-type is found in Dendranthema and allied genera, whereas the Artemisia-type occurs in Artemisia and closely related genera. We analysed the botanical composition of pollen harvested by Apis mellifera L. in the Canudos Biological Station, Bahia, Brazil, and the influence of climatic factors on pollen sample composition was assessed. Forty-six pollen types were identified belonging to species occurring in the study area. The family Leguminosae was of significant importance amongst the samples, represented by ten pollen types. Diodia radula, Rhaphiodon echinus, and Mimosa misera pollen types occurred most constantly among the samples. We observed that isolated pollen class characterises samples analysed. It was also observed that pollen type richness is directly linked to rainfall, reflecting the strong influence of this climatic parameter on flowering intensity, and thus on the ability of the bees to obtain food resources.
