7. Specific heat, magnetic susceptibility and transport properties of polycrystalline CeInAu and CeInAu2

Abstract

Measurements of specific heat (1.4–350 K), thermopower and thermal conducctivity (1.5–300 K), electrical resistivity (40 mK–300 K) and of the magnetic susceptibility (40 mK–300 K) on polycrystalline samples of CeInAu, CeInAu2and of the reference compounds LaInAu and LuInAu2are reported. The properties of the Ce-compounds are unusual due to phase transitions (magnetic ordering, martensitic) and crystalline electric field effects. There are only weak indications of a valence instability.

13. Magnetic ordering of some mixed valent Yb-compounds

Abstract

Electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements are presented for YbPd3, YbPt3and Yb3Pt5between 0.05 and 300 K. YbPd3and YbPt3polycrystals show antiferromagnetic ordering at 0.18 K, YbPt3single crystals at 0.30 K. Yb3Pt5single crystals show a structural phase transition near 170 K and an antiferromagnetic transition at 0.95 K. The compounds show fractional valence by a smaller magnetic moment than expected for Yb3+, by lattice constant anomalies and by LIIIedge X-ray absorption.
