The paper presents research results of the copper smelting furnace at the turn of the 3rd/2nd millennium BC discovered in the ancient mine Novotemirsky. This is the first evidence of the metals smelting from ores directly at the deposit in the Bronze Age of the Southern Trans- Urals. The technology of smelting metals from ores (the furnace structure, the type of ores and slags, the melting temperature, and the metal composition) was determined using a complex of mineralogical and geochemical research methods (optical and electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence analysis and LA-ICP-MS)., The results demonstrate an original metallurgical technology despite the territorial-chronological localization of the furnace within the Sintashta culture. In particular, sulfide inclusions in the Cr-rich containing olivine slags find analogies in the Abashevo culture from multilayer Bronze Age settlements of the Southern Urals.

The paper addresses the question of ore resources (occurrences and deposits) exploited by the Early Iron Age metallurgists of the Itkul culture in the middle Urals. The main method of the study was the analysis of geological maps and reports, and the analysis of the correlation between the identified ore occurrences and the Itkul culture metal production centers. The results of the study reveal a relationship between the location of the Itkul culture settlement clusters and various types of copper ore (VMS, skarn and stratiform) and iron ore (infiltration and sedimentary ironstone) deposits, which could have been exploited for copper, and iron metallurgy in antiquity. We suggest that the primary smelting of copper ore was performed only in clusters: Polevskoy, Itkulsky, Isetsky and Irtyashsky. The use of ironstone ores is attested in copper metallurgy, where they were added into the charge as fluxes to reduce the viscosity of the slag melt and more efficiently extract copper from the ore. The Itkul metallurgical settlements seem also to have direct evidence of iron smelting. The ironstone deposits of infiltration-sedimentary type, common in the middle Trans-Urals, were apparently one of the main ore sources used. The provided geological maps showing the location of the possible iron and copper metallic resources make it possible to localize areas having the potential for finding new archaeological evidence of ancient mining and primary metallurgical operations. Based on these data, the first early Iron Age iron ore mine was discovered in the Urals.

Новотемирский рудник стал первым памятником горного дела в Южном Зауралье, на котором проведены раскопки широкими площадями. Получены новые данные о технологиях первых металлургов региона, а также характере их развития на протяжении II тыс. до н.э. Вскрытие культурного слоя выявило свидетельства всех стадий металлопроизводства бронзового века. Горное дело отражают выработки различной морфологии и прилегающие к ним отвалы. Впервые в бронзовом веке Южного Зауралья открыт шахтный способ добычи руды. На памятнике осуществлялась выплавка металлов из руд, маркированная обнаружением медеплавильного горна со шлаками. Об отливке готовых изделий свидетельствует найденная двухстворчатая литейная форма кирки-пешни из хлоритолита. Результаты радиоуглеродного датирования отражают три этапа разработки в бронзовом веке, соотносимые с хронологически последовательными археологическими культурами региона. Металлургический очаг относится к синташтинскому периоду (XXI-XX вв. до н.э.), шахта и прилегающие к ней отвалы — к алакульскому (XVII-XVI вв. до н.э.). Делом будущего остается выявление производственных объектов, связанных с финалом бронзового века (XV-XIII вв. до н.э.). Установлено, что одни и те же месторождения использовались носителями различных культур в течение II тыс. до н.э. Это говорит о функционировании очага металлургии в Зауральском горно-металлургическом центре на протяжении всего позднего бронзового века. Учитывая резкое сокращение свидетельств выплавки металлов из руд на неукрепленных поселениях и очевидное изменение технологических составляющих, можно предполагать специализацию металлопроизводства в алакульский период: перенос части металлургических операций на рудники и/или поселения, расположенные в непосредственной близости от эксплуатируемых месторождений.

The paper is devoted to the problem of the development level and organization models of mining within the Eurasian metallurgical province of the Late Bronze Age in the 2nd millennium BC. The main research aim is to determine the chain of technological processes taking place at the Novotemirsky ancient mine in the Southern Trans-Urals. The sources of raw materials, traces of use, and functional identification of stone (n=58) and bone tools (n=1) were determined using traceological, petrographic, X-ray fluorescence, and X-ray diffraction analysis. All tools were divided into three groups depending on their use: mining (a casting mould for a pick), ore crushing (hammers, small hammers), supporting devices (“bases”, counterweights for lifting ore). The absence of mining and processing (grinding pestles, grinding stones) and metal-working (blacksmith hammers) tools at the Novotemirsky mine indicates a narrow range of technical operations associated only with direct mining of copper ore and ore-preparing (crushing large blocks). It is assumed that there is a partial specialization of mining, which consists in the formation of temporary miners’ collectives, who are seasonally involved in these operations., В статье обсуждается проблема оценки уровня развития и моделей организации горного дела в пределах Евразийской металлургической провинции позднего бронзового века. Основная цель работы — определение цепи технологических процессов, происходящих на древнем руднике Новотемирский в Южном Зауралье. Основным источником являются каменные (58 экз.) и костяные орудия (1 экз.) позднего бронзового века, обнаруженные в ходе раскопок на памятнике. Их функциональное назначение и следы использования, состав и источники сырья были определены при помощи трасологического, петрографического, рентгенофлуоресцентного и рентгенофазового анализов. В коллекции памятника выделено три группы орудий: горнопроходческие (литейная форма для отливки кайла), рудодробительные (молоты, молотки), вспомогательные приспособления (подставки, противовесы для подъема руды). Отсутствие в материалах Новотемирского рудника орудий горно-обогатительного (песты, терочники) и металлообрабатывающего (кузнечные молотки) циклов указывает на узкий спектр технических операций, практиковавшихся на Новотемирском руднике, связанных только с непосредственной добычей медной руды и первичным обогащением (дроблением крупных форм). Предполагается существование частичной специализации горного дела, которая заключается в образовании временных коллективов рудокопов, сезонно задействованных на горных работах.

The paper highlights the results of research of textile impressions on the inside of fragments of ceramic vessels from the collection of fortified settlement Arkaim in the Southern Trans-Urals. The technological characteristics of textiles, reconstructed on the basis of the analysis of impressions-positives from imprints, are given. All textiles have a woven structure, represented by different variants of tabby weave. A large proportion of damage on the textiles indicates their secondary use in pottery, whereas initially the products could be part of the garment. Technological parameters of the fabrics indicate the use of a classic loom, the closest analogies are traced in other funeral sites of the Sintashta culture (cemeteries Kamenny Ambar-5, Krivoye Ozero, Bestamak and others).
