A covering cycle is a closed path that traverses each edge of the graph at least once. A special case is the number of Euler cycles in the non oriented graph. 4. Foliar fertilization in ‘Nocellara del Belice’ olive trees

Abstract

Eight-year-old olive trees of ‘Nocellara del Belice’ grown in central Sicily were treated with five different types/combinations of organic and mineral foliar fertilizers. Floral 20-20-20 (mineral N, P, K, and microelements; FLO), Alga (extract of brown algae; ALG), FLO+ALG, Azomin (organic N, amino acids and peptides; AZO), Supernat93 (organic N and K, distillation residue; SUP), and water (CONTROL) were applied four times during summer and fall 2002. Yield and trunk circumference were measured during fall 2002, whereas other vegetative and reproductive parameters were measured during spring-fall 2003. AZO and SUP trees produced more than CONTROL and ALG ones, whereas only AZO trees showed higher yield efficiency than CONTROL. The number of inflorescences per shoot was greatest in FLO and ALG trees and smallest in CONTROL trees. Percentage of ovary abortion and June drop were lowest in AZO trees and highest in FLO+ALG and ALG trees, whereas ALG was the only fertilizer that caused a greater fruit drop at harvest. Shoot growth was significantly reduced in ALG and FLO trees, and AZO trees presented leaves with reduced specific weight. Organic foliar fertilization with AZO and SUP generally induced better productive and vegetative performances in ‘Nocellara del Belice’ olive trees than CONTROL or mineral foliar fertilizers by reducing ovary abortion and June drop and increasing shoot growth.

5. Effect of rootstock vigor and in-row spacing on stem and root growth, conformation, and dry-matter distribution of young apple trees

Abstract

The effects of M.9 and MM.106 rootstocks and in-row spacing (0.4, 0.7, and 1 m) on the vegetative behavior of three-year-old apple (Malus domestica Borkh) trees were studied. Analysis of digital images was used to estimate canopy and root growth and conformation (shape and size), whereas dry matter distribution was used to determine partitioning to various plant parts. Trees on less vigorous M.9 rootstocks showed reduced stem and root growth as they produced less and/or shorter shoots and less and/or shorter and thinner roots. Canopy spread area (CSA) and volume were similar for trees on both rootstocks and differences in stem length density (stem length per unit canopy volume; SLD) compensated for the difference in stem growth. For M.9 roots, the decrease in growth was reflected in the reduction in root spread area (RSA), which was not compensated for by the increase in root length density (root length per unit RSA; RLD). Trees on M.9 allocated more dry matter to above-ground structures, whereas trees on MM.106 partitioned more to roots. Leaf to root surface area ratio (L:R) was also greater for trees on M.9. Stems of trees grown 0.4 m apart weighed less because they were thinner, whereas the same trees produced less and/or shorter, but thicker roots, which resulted in similar root dry weights for trees at all spacings. Canopy height increased with spacing for trees on M.9, whereas it was negatively related to spacing for MM.106. CSA was rounder at the wider spacings and exceeded the allotted soil surface at the closest one. For three-year-old apple trees, optimal in-row spacing (no shoot overlap and full coverage of allotted space) was about 0.7 m for M.9 and 0.8 m for MM.106. RSA was also rounder at the larger spacings, but never filled the allotted space. Dry matter distribution was significantly influenced by spacing, and root to shoot ratio (R:S) was highest at the widest spacing. The vegetative behavior of young apple trees was influenced by both rootstock vigor and tree spacing. Also, trees on the M.9 rootstock reflected greater ability to compete for available resources and adapt to space confinement and, therefore, may represent a better option for cultivation of apple in the settings and at the planting densities considered.

8. Chondrosarcoma of the larynx: a case report

Abstract

Chondrosarcomas of the larynx are rare cancers and are more frequently located at cricoid cartilage level. They are characterised by a low tendency to metastatic diffusion (low grade). The treatment of choice is surgery, which may be endoscopic or "open partial surgery", if extension of the cancer is limited. Prognosis is generally good. In this report, a case of low malignancy chondrosarcoma of the larynx is presented, which was treated surgically with a glottic-hypoglottic laryngectomy according to Serafini-Bartual. Chondrosarcoma of the larynx shows a slow and painless growth, the first symptom is often an ingravescent dysphonia. Laryngoscopy reveals tumefaction of the larynx, covered by intact mucosa. Computerized tomography imaging with contrast and magnetic resonance imaging defines not only coarse calcifications, pathognomonic of chondromatous neo-formations but also the relationship of the neoformation with the surrounding tissues. However, histology remains the gold standard for diagnostic purposes. Treatment is essentially surgical; it must allow eradication of the cancer between specific safety margins and, it must, at the same time, be functional, if the lesion does not extend beyond half of the cricoid circle and if histological grade is low.

Abstract

The drought tolerance of the commercial apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) rootstocks M9, M26, M27 and MM111, and some new selections from the rootstock breeding programme at HRI-East Malling (AR69-7, AR295-6, AR360-19, AR486-1 and AR628-2), was assessed using potted, glasshouse-grown, unworked rootstocks. After an initial period of growth under well-watered conditions the amount of irrigation was gradually reduced, for some treatments, to simulate natural drying in the soil. At the end of a six-month growth period, the rootstocks were harvested and the production of dry matter and its partitioning to various plant parts determined. The rootstocks exhibited large differences in shoot and root dry matter, and root length but not all the rootstocks showed declines in root mass or length in response to the droughting treatment. Abstract

Otitis media (OM) affects the middle ear and is typically characterized by earache. OM may be classified as acute (AOM) or chronic (COM), based on symptom duration. OM may be clinically suspected, but the diagnosis is usually confirmed by the otoscopy. Antibiotic therapy is frequently used in clinical practice. However, antibiotics often induce intestinal and respiratory dysbiosis associated with some clinical problems. A one-month course of a probiotic mixture (Abincol® containing Lactobacillus plantarum LP01 (1 billion of living cells), Lactobacillus lactis subspecies cremoris LLC02 (800 million living cells), and Lactobacillus delbrueckii LDD01 (200 million living cells), was prescribed in the Group A, and was compared with no addon treatment, such as the Group B. Patients were evaluated at baseline (T0), at the end of antibiotic treatment (T1), at the end of probiotic course (T2), and at the end of 3-month follow-up (T3).
