AGGRESSIVE periodontitis , *GINGIVAL fluid , *MATRIX metalloproteinases , *CONNECTIVE tissues , *PERIODONTITIS , *BONES - Abstract
Introduction: The progression of periodontitis depends on the changes in bone and connective tissue homeostasis and the imbalance of the biofilm and the host immunoinflammatory response, particularly matrix metalloproteinases (MMP). Aim of the study: To assess the probable relation between subgingival anaerobic flora and the expression of MMP-3 in patients with generalized aggressive periodontitis (AgP), chronic periodontitis (CP) and healthy subjects, and to evaluate these levels according to varied tissue loss severity. Material and methods: The plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), probing depth (PD) and clinical attachment levels (CAL) were evaluated. MMP levels obtained from gingival sulcus fluid (GCF) were measured with Enzyme Linked Immuno Assay (ELISA). The bacterial counts were determined with Parocheck®. Results: Higher levels of MMP-3 in patients with AgP compared to subjects with CP and healthy individuals were observed. The microorganisms responsible of possible tissue destruction in both AgP and CP are red complex bacteria. T. denticola, T. forsythia, P. intermedia and F. nucleatum show positive correlation with MMP-3 levels. Conclusions: MMP-3 is a biomarker associated with AgP, and red complex bacteria levels are correlated with increasing periodontal tissue loss in both periodontitis forms. The diagnosis of aggressive periodontitis, or site-specific treatment strategies can be orchestrated based on the evaluation of MMP-3 and the bacterial counts in patients with periodontitis. Objectives: The method as to how the anatomy education in medical schools ought to be and which education models to be selected as to reach the optimum way to present the course is a topic of discussion locally and globally. Therefore, we set our sights on getting to know the thoughts of the students on anatomy education who are looking to practice their knowledge clinically in the future. Methods: The study encompassed students in their second years who have completed their full courses of anatomy education in 2013-2014 academic year of Adnan Menderes University Medicine Faculty. Out of 138 students, 120 of them (64 females, 56 males) accepted to participate with in the study. A survey of 25 questions which inquired parameters such as instruction methods, resources used, time allocated to anatomy etc. and the students were asked to answer those questions. Results: While 109 of the group (90.8%) consider the anatomy courses to be essential, 11 (6.7%) concur other wise. The most important factor in anatomy courses to be efficient was deemed to be the instructor (57.5%) and the use of supplementary materials such as 3D images (89.2%), video instructions (87.5%) and radiologic images (70%) shared high ratios as well. A total of 116 students (96.7%) shared a request for the courses to be held with in smaller groups and while 61 participants (50.8%) would rather the application courses on cadavers, another 39 (32.5%) preferred models over those. 104 students not edthattheydid not utilize printed materials of the library to study, 85 of them declared the same with online databases and there were 105 students who spoke about using books at home along with atlas to study. Conclusion: So as to serve the anatomy education at its optimum, the possible innovations with regards to the perspective of the individuals subject to this very education should be taken into consideration. SCIENCE periodicals ,ANATOMY ,NEUROSCIENCES - Abstract
Objectives: In our study, we aimed to reveal the statistical data of the international scientific publications in the field of anatomy made in our country since 2000. Methods: Statistical data at the Turkey based publications, which have at least one anatomy specialist identified and have been published in journals at the ISI Web of Science database and covered by the SCI (Science Citation Index) and SCI-E (Expanded), were screened. The time period for the study is between the years 2000 and 2014. Number of publications by year, rate of increase in the number of publications, classification of broadcast (articles, papers, etc.), category of publications, and their citation rates were recorded. We determined the top 10 journals which have the most comprising publications, and the top 10 universities which facilitated these publications. Results: Since 2000, we reached a total of 1385 publications in the field of anatomy. These publications are comprised of 1,285 original articles; 35 meeting presentations, 32 abstracts, 27 letters to the editor, and 23 compilations. Regarding to the number of publications, there is a gradual decrease in recent years, despite a significant increase observed in year 2009. In Turkey, ??the most published and cited categories are the surgical anatomy, morphology and neuroscience. The top three journals with highest number of publications are Surgical and Radiologic Anatomy, Saudi Medical Journal, and Clinical Anatomy. The top three publishing institutions are Ankara University, Hacettepe University and Ege University. Conclusion: Our study provides us an understanding of the topics anatomists have favored to study recent years. A large number of published research articles are about surgical anatomy, morphology and neuroscience. Obviously, the quality of publications and their number of citations are more important than their scalar quantity. We believe the future studies should focus on the multidisciplinary areas with more citation prospects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Since the use of normalized isokinetic strength was recently proposed to analyze sportive performance, it was aimed to examine relative isokinetic muscle strength as well as absolute strength in jump performance. Secondly, the investigation of the relationship between extremity-based and inter-extremity strength asymmetry and selected jump tasks was aimed. Methods: Thirty female professional volleyball players (23.70 ± 5.27 years) who has at least four training sessions per week participated to study during the pre-season period Peak torque (PT) of knee flexors and extensors at the speed of 60º/s and 180º/s were evaluated using isokinetic dynamometer. Jump height (cm) and relative power (W/kg) of vertical countermovement jump (CMJ) and squat jump (SJ) were tested by optojump photoelectric system. Results: A positive moderate correlation between PT and relative PT(rPT) at both speeds with jump height was detected (r = 0.365–0.594). It was found that jump power had a positive moderate to good correlation with PT(r = 0.557–0.731) and low to moderate correlation with rPT (r = 0.314–0.601). No significant correlation was found between hamstring/quadriceps ratio and bilateral muscle asymmetry with jump parameters (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Due to the relatively low level of relationship between normalized strength and performance, we suggest carrying out further studies examining the effects of normalized parameters on performance. Considering the findings based on strength asymmetry, the coordinated action of the relevant muscles may come to the forefront during the performance, rather than muscle strength.

Sonuç: TOL cerrahisi sonrası hastalara KAA yürümenin reçete edildiği ilk 6-haftalık dönemde, ağırlık aktarım miktarlarının uzaktan takibini mümkün kılan ve hastalara anlık geri bildirimde bulunabilen sistemler ile sürecin yönetilmesi, bu hasta grubunda erken dönem iyileşmeyi destekleyen bir yaklaşımdır Aim: The aim of the study is to investigate the effect of instant feedback provided by remote-access during partial weight bearing (PWB) walking, which is prescribed as post-surgical treatment for Osteochondral Lesion of the Talus (OLT), on compliance with PWB limits, pain intensity, kinesiophobia, and functional level in the early postoperative period. Methods: The study was conducted with patients (n=10) who were prescribed PWB protocol after microfracture surgery and whose compliance with the protocol limits was followed remotely for 6 weeks after discharge. The patients were randomly divided into two groups as the feedback group (FB) and the non-feedback (NFB) group. Pain intensity was evaluated with the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), kinesiophobia with the TAMPA Kinesiophobia Scale (TKS), and foot and ankle functional levels were assessed with the European Foot and Ankle Society Scale (EFAS). Assessments were carried out in 3 different time periods: pre-operative, 3rd & 6th-weeks after surgery. Results: While there was no difference between groups in terms of compliance with PWB protocol limits between 0-3 weeks postoperatively, a statistically significant difference was determined against NFB group in between 3–6-week period. There was a significant decrease in mean pain intensity at 3 & 6 weeks in the FB group (p= 000.5 and p= 0.002), while a significant increase was observed in mean pain intensity at 3rd week in NFB group (p=0.012). A significant improvement was found in kinesiophobia levels of FB group at 3-and-6 weeks (p=0.033 and p=0.049), and in EFAS scores at only 6 weeks (p= 0.004). There was no significant difference in kinesiophobia and EFAS scores’ changes of NFB group at all measurement times. In comparison between groups, a significant decrease was observed in pain intensity of FB group compared to NFB group at 3rd-week (p=0.003). Kinesiophobia (p=0.045) and EFAS scores of FB group (p=0.02) showed statistically significant improvement at 6th-week compared to NFB group. Conclusion: Management of the patients with OLT surgery who were prescribed PWB at the first post-operative 6 weeks can be supported by using the systems that enable remote monitoring of weight-bearing and provide instant feedback to patients to improve early clinical recovery.

© 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland. Background: Balance and coordination are important for performing activities of daily living. Balance and coordination assessment and training are used by physiotherapists in many different rehabilitation areas. Marmara Balance and Education System (MarBES) is a device developed to evaluate and improve balance and coordination. Aims: To examine the test–retest reliability of the MarBES device. Methods: Double-leg and single-leg (eyes open-closed) tests were applied to healthy young adult participants for balance testing on the MarBES device. Weight data is estimated from pressure sensors located in 4 different corners and a score is calculated with computer software for the individual’s center of gravity (center of pressure X, Y) and the amount of deviation from the center for each axis. Weight transfer to the target surface was measured for assessment of the participants’ coordination performance. Participants rested for 10 min and all measurements were repeated by the same evaluator. The obtained data were recorded and the reliability of the measurements was evaluated with Spearman’s rho correlation analysis. Results: A total of 40 healthy young individuals (28 female) with a mean age of 21 years were included. The balance assessments with MarBES showed moderate to good reliability (ICC: 0.535–0.903). The coordination assessment results showed moderate to good reliability (ICC: 0.575–0.712). Conclusions: Objective evaluation of balance and coordination parameters is very important in rehabilitation. Results of the study showed that the MarBES device developed by the researchers is a reliable method for the evaluation of balance and coordination in healthy young individuals.

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the health behavior and health needs of medical and health sciences students in order to identify areas that need intervention. Materials and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted with 770 first-year university students. The data were collected with a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Youth Risk Behavior Survey and the Eating Attitudes Test. Body mass index was calculated. Results: Although, only 12.7% of the students were overweight or obese, 25.6% of the students perceived themselves to be overweight or obese. The students said that in the last week, 20.9% had breakfast 1 or 3 times, 5.7% ate no fruits at all, and 11.6% ate no vegetables at all. 48.1% of the students did not engage in any physical activity, and 83.2% spent more than 2 hours inactively in front of a screen. It was observed that 22.3% were current smokers. A propensity for eating behaviors disorder was found in 9.0%. Drinking energyboosting sports drinks 1-6 times in the last week (β: 3.286), smoking (β: 1.875) and eating few vegetable dishes in the last week (β: 0.484) were identified as factors that could be associated with a “tendency for eating behavior disorder.” Conclusion: We can conclude that nutritional issues, negative body weight perception, use of tobacco, and sedentary lifestyle are the main intervention and counselling areas for our study group.

Bulgular: Her iki grupta yer alan olgular demografik özellikler açısından benzerdi (p>0,05). Background Benefits of physical activity has been shown for adolescents; however, there is a decline trend in number of adolescents meeting current WHO recommendations. This trend underlines the importance of identifying factors associated with adolescents’ physical activity level (PAL) with considerations of regional and cultural differences to plan and implement effective policies. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine personal, ecological, and social factors associated with PAL and sport participation in Turkish adolescents aged 11–14 years. A cross-sectional study was conducted by including 996 adolescents aged between 11 and 14 years from 39 secondary schools in İstanbul, Turkey. Logistic regression analyses performed to identify the significant personal (age, gender, sleep time, screen time, BMIz score, having siblings), ecological (presence of playground, type of school transportation), and social (family income, engaging a physical activity with family, and preferred activity at school breaks) predictors of PAL and sport participation. Results Adolescents who were active during break time at school (p < 0.001), engaging a physical activity with family (p < 0.001), and did not have a sibling (p = 0.029) were more likely to be physically active. Adolescents behaved active during break time at school (p < 0.001), had a playground at home (p < 0.001), spending time with family for physical activity (p < 0.001), and did not have a sibling (p = 0.021) were more likely to participate in a sport activity. Conclusions Predictors of PAL in this study indicates the need to promote active break time in school, increased physical activity time with family, and to design environmental policies to increase number of playgrounds.

The level of visual memory and visual perception disorders in children with cerebral palsy (CP) depends on the level of functional disorders in the brain. In these children, whether or not they have any visual impairment, dysfunctions in the brain cause deterioration in visual perception. The aim of our study was to evaluate the visualmotor perception influence in children with CP using the Bender Gestalt Visual Motor Perception Test (BGGMAT). 30 healthy children aged 5-11 years and 30 children with CP were included in the study. BGGMAT was used for evaluation. IBM SPSS program was used for statistical analysis. Descriptive analyzes frequency tables for nominal variables; median and minimum-maximum values for non-normally distributed and ordinal variables. The chi-square test was used to determine the difference between groups, the Mann-Whitney U test was used for non-normally distributed variables, and the Wilcoxon Test was used to determine the difference between within-group variables. As a result of the evaluation, a significant difference was found between the two groups in terms of percentile ratios (p0.05). When the BGGMAT error scores, percentiles and intelligence ages of individuals with CP were analyzed according to age, gender and physiotherapy duration, it was observed that there was a significant difference according to age and physiotherapy duration (p0.05). It was determined that visual-motor perception was affected in children with CP according to BGGMAT. Since this problem may have negative effects on the rehabilitation process, we think that visual-motor perception assessment should be added to routine practices in children with CP.

Background: The majority of shoulder complaints are occurred due to rotator cuff pathologies. Although conservative treatments including physiotherapy are acknowledged as the first-line treatment approach in the management of shoulder pain, the uptake of physiotherapy practice is variable. One possible explanation of this could be the poor evidence-based knowledge mobilization to practice. The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of an E-learning program on physiotherapy students' knowledge of evidence-based Rotator cuff-related shoulder pain (RCRSP) management and their confidence in applying this care compared to a control group. Methods: A randomized controlled study will be carried with 146 fourth-year physiotherapy students. Students will be assigned to one of two groups: E-learning (N=73) or control (N=73). The outcomes will be: (1) RCRSP knowledge and clinical reasoning skills, and (2) self-reported confidence in RCRSP knowledge and clinical reasoning abilities. Both measurements will be held at baseline and post-intervention. Conclusions: This is the first trial to investigate if a specifically designed E-learning program besides a regular learning curriculum, improves students’ knowledge and self-confidence in the RCRSP management. Enhancing students’ after-graduation readiness to manage patients with RCRSP may help to allow patients access to evidence-informed physiotherapists.Trial registration: This trial was registered on clinicalTrials.gov on 17 June 2021 (NCT04952623)

Introduction: Mobile health applications for individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) have the potential to improve physical activity (PA) during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic; yet, there is a need to identify the content of a mobile application (app) in the light of conceptual framework and the delivery features to increase the usability of the app. The aim of this study is to improve the mobile application based on a framework that conceptually determines the needs of individuals with T2DM. At the same time, it is to determine the presentation features of the application to increase its usability for individuals and health professionals using it. Methods: The content and delivery features of a PA app were determined using the Delphi method considering the dia- betes core sets of the international classification of the functioning framework, including experts in the area of T2DM for the app\"s content and heterogeneous participants for the delivery features of the app. A mobile application was created according to the data obtained by this method after the application was created by this way. Results: Delphi experts suggested 64 ideas for the content of the app, of which 46 reached sufficient agreement (72.5–100%). In the second step, participants generated 27 ideas, yet, the consensus was reached on 12 delivery features (70–100%). The application was created by transforming these ideas into app content. Discussion and Conclusion: This study addressed the content-related limitations and usability challenges in the pre-existing studies. During the lockdown, the developed PA app can be implemented using different mobile devices.

Purpose Kinesiophobia is defined as the fear of movement and activity resulting from a feeling of vulnerability to painful injury or re-injury. This study aimed to determine the effect of kinesiophobia on physical activity, balance, and fear of falling in patients with Parkinson\"s disease. Methods The study, which was designed as a cross-sectional type, was conducted with 86 patients with Parkinson\"s disease (age 61.25 SD [9.72] years old) by face-to-face interviews with the patients. The Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia, International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form, Berg Balance Scale, Falls Efficacy Scale, Visual Analog Scale - Fear of Falling, Unified Parkinson\"s Disease Rating Scale - motor score, and the Hoehn and Yahr scale were used to evaluate the patients. Results Patients with Parkinson\"s disease who had high levels of kinesiophobia had lower levels of physical activity, worse balance, and higher disease severity and fear of falling. A correlation was found between the Tampa Scale score and physical activity, balance, fear of falling, falls efficacy, and disease motor score (p r = -0.38, -0.54, 0.67, 0.57, and 0.37, respectively). According to multiple linear regression analysis, kinesiophobia explained the dependent variables to varying degrees ranging from 13% to 44% (p < .001). Conclusions Patients with Parkinson\"s disease may have kinesiophobia. Rehabilitation programs to support functional capacity for these patients should be developed considering the presence of kinesiophobia.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of high voltage pulsed current on back extension muscle strengthening and pain. Materials and methods: Forty two patients with back pain syndrome participated in this study. Twenty one patients (mean age 43.62 +/- 14.46 years) formed the control group in which hot packs, ultrasound, TENS and exercise program including strengthening and stretching exercises were given. Besides these modalities, high voltage pulsed current and exercise program including strengthening and stretching exercises were given to the study group consisting of 21 patients (mean age 43.81 +/- 12.32 years). Results: The difference between within-group parameters was found statistically significant (p0.05). Alleviation in pain level and decrease in Oswestry disability index scores was found statistically significant in the study group when compared with the control group (p0.05).

In the welding process, which is one of the most widespreadly utilised joining process, to estimate the behaviours of the material after welding is very important for the strength and workıng productivity of weldments. In this study, an experimental investigation on the mechanical properties of submerged arc welded joints using flat tensile specimens was carried out to determine the tensile properties of the base metal, weld metal and heat-affected zone of weldments and a finite element model of the submerged arc welding process was carried out using the results of the experiments ANSYS finite element package program was used in modelling. Analysis was realized in two steps. Initially, thermal analysis was made by the thermal cycle that occurs in the welding process. Then the results those obtained from the thermal analysis have been used in the second step as inputs for the mechanical analysis. The situation of the material after welding can be estimated by modelling, also the optimisation of welding parameters can be done.
