2. Interferometer-controlled soft X-ray scanning photoemission microscope at SOLEIL

Abstract

ANTARES beamline (BL), a new soft X-ray scanning photoemission microscope located at the SOLEIL synchrotron storage ring has been recently designed, built and commissioned. The implemented interferometer control allows the accurate measurement of the transverse position of the Fresnel zone plate (FZP) relative to the sample. An effective sample position feedback has been achieved during experiments in static mode, with a fixed FZP position required to perform nano Angle-Resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy (Nano-ARPES) measurements. Likewise, long-term stability has been attained for the FZP position relative to the sample during the translation of the FZP when performing typical X-ray absorption experiments around the absorption edges of light elements. Moreover, a fully automatic feedback digital control of the interferometric system provides extremely low orthogonal distortion of the recorded two-dimensional images. The microscope is diffraction limited with the resolution set to several tens of nanometers by the quality of the zone plates. Details on the design of the interferometric system and a brief description of the first commissioning results are presented here.

Abstract

As one of the latest beamline built at the SOLEIL synchrotron source, ANTARES beamline offers a spectroscopic non-destructive nano-probe to study advanced materials. This innovative scanning photoemission microscopy combines linear and angle sweeps to perform precise electronic band structure determination by Nano Angle Resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy (nanoARPES) and chemical imaging by core level detection. The beamline integrates effectively insertion devices and a high transmission beamline optics. This photon source has been combined with an advanced microscope, which has precise sample handling abilities. Moreover, it is fully compatible with a high resolution R4000 Scienta hemispherical analyzer and a set of Fresnel Zone Plates (FZP) able to focalize the beam spot up to a few tenths of nanometers, depending on the spatial resolution of the selected FZP. We present here the main conceptual design of the beamline and endstation, together with some of the firsts commissioning results.

Shiu and T.-H. Chuang, AIP Conf. Proc; The new ANATOMIX beamline at Synchrotron SOLEIL is dedicated to hard X-ray full-field tomography techniques. Operating in a range of photon energies from approximately 5 to 50 keV, it offers both parallel-beam projection microtomography and nanotomography using a zone-plate transmission X-ray microscope and thus covers a range of spatial resolution from 20 nm to 20 $\mu$m, expressed in terms of useful pixel size. Here we describe the microtomography instrumentation and its performance.

Abstract

Since the laser invention, the advent of X-ray Free Electron Lasers (FEL) half a century later, opens new areas for matter investigation. In parallel, the spectacular development of laser plasma acceleration (LPA) with several GeV beam acceleration in an extremely short distance appears very promising. As a first step, the qualification of the LPA with a FEL application sets a first challenge. Still, energy spread and beam divergence do not meet the state-of-the-art performance of the conventional accelerators and have to be manipulated to fulfill the FEL requirement. We report here on the undulator spontaneous emission measured after a transport manipulation electron beam line, using variable permanent magnet quadrupoles of variable strength for emittance handing and a demixing chicane equipped with a slit for the energy spread. Strategies of control electron beam position and dispersion have been elaborated. The measured undulator radiation provides an insight on the electron beam properties., Proceedings of the 9th Int. Abstract

The ERC grant COXINEL aims at demonstrating experimentally Free Electron Laser (FEL) amplification with electrons generated by laser plasma acceleration (LPA). Because of the still limited electron beam performance (especially energy spread and divergence) in view of the FEL requirements, the electron beam transfer line has been specifically designed with adequate diagnostics and strong focusing variable strength permanent magnet quadrupoles, an energy de-mixing chicane and second set of quadrupoles for further dedicated focusing in the FEL interaction region, in a U20 in-vacuum undulator, enabling to operate at 200 nm with a 180 MeV electron beam. Abstract

LUNEX5 (free electron Laser Using a New accelerator for the Exploitation of X-ray radiation of 5th generation) aims at investigating compact and advanced Free Electron Laser (FEL). It comprises one one hand a 400 MeV superconducting linac for studies of advanced FEL schemes, high repetition rate operation (10 kHz), multi-FEL lines, and one the other hand a Laser Wake Field Accelerator (LWFA) for its qualification by a FEL application, an undulator line enabling advanced seeding and pilot user applications in the 40-4 nm spectral range. Following the CDR completion, different R&D programs were launched, as for instance on FEL pulse duration measurement, high repetition rate electro-optical sampling. The COXINEL ERC Advanced Grant aims at demonstrating LWFA based FEL amplification, thanks to a proper electron beam manipulation, with a test experiment under preparation. Abstract

Ultraviolet (UV) synchrotron radiation circular dichroism (SRCD) spectroscopy has made an important contribution to the determination and understanding of the structure of bio-molecules. In this paper, we report an innovative approach that we term time-resolved SRCD (tr-SRCD), which overcomes the limitations of current broadband UV SRCD setups. This technique allows accessing ultrafast time scales (down to nanoseconds), previously measurable only by other methods, such as infrared (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), fluorescence and absorbance spectroscopies, and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The tr-SRCD setup takes advantage of the natural polarization of the synchrotron radiation emitted by a bending magnet to record broadband UV CD faster than any current SRCD setup, improving the acquisition speed from 10 mHz to 130 Hz and the accessible temporal resolution by several orders of magnitude. We illustrate the new approach by following the isomer concentration changes of an azopeptide after a photoisomerization. This breakthrough in SRCD spectroscopy opens up a wide range of potential applications to the detailed characterization of biological processes, such as protein folding and protein-ligand binding. Abstract

LUNEX5 (free electron Laser Using a New accelerator for the Exploitation of X-ray radiation of 5th generation) aims at investigating the production of short, intense, coherent pulses in the 40-4 nm spectral range [1]. It comprises two types of accelerators connected to a single Free Electron Laser (FEL) for advanced seeding configurations (seeding with High order Harmonic in Gas, echo). A 400 MeV superconducting Linear Accelerator, adapted for studies of advanced FEL schemes, will enable future upgrade towards high repetition rate and multi-user operation by splitting part of the macropulse to different FEL lines. A 0.4 - 1 GeV Laser Wake Field Accelerator (LWFA) [2] will also be qualified by the FEL application. After the Conceptual Design Report, R&D has been launched on different sub components. Abstract

SOLEIL is the French 2.75 GeV high brilliance third generation synchrotron light source delivering photons to 20 beamlines with a current of 400 mA in multibunch or hybrid modes, and 60 mA in 8 bunch mode. There are already 17 insertion devices installed and 9 others are planned in the next 2 coming years. Among them, two canted in vacuum insertion devices are planned, for the Nanoscopium and Tomography beamlines, and will be accommodated in a 12 m long straight section, with a 6.5 mrad separation angle. These ~150 m long beamlines will exploit the high brilliance and coherence characteristics of the X-ray (5-20 keV) beam both for diffraction limited focusing and for contrast formation. To provide low vertical beta functions at each undulator, an extra triplet of quadrupoles was added in the middle of the section.
