We describe bottomonium production not only in pp collisions but also in heavy-ion collisions by using the Remler's formalism where quarkonium density operator is applied to all possible combination of heavy quark and heavy antiquark pairs. In pp collisions heavy (anti)quark momentum is provided by the PYTHIA event generator after rescaling $p_T$ and rapidity to imitate the FONLL calculations. Then spatial separation between heavy quark and heavy antiquark is introduced based on the uncertainty principle. In heavy-ion collisions quarkonium wavefunction changes with temperature assuming heavy quark potential equals the free energy of heavy quark and heavy antiquark system in heat bath. The density operator is updated whenever heavy quark or heavy antiquark scatters in QGP produced in heavy-ion collisions. Our results are consistent with the experimental data from ALICE and CMS Collaborations assuming that the interaction rate of heavy (anti)quark in quarkonium is suppressed to 10 \% that of unbound heavy (anti)quark. We also find that off-diagonal recombination of bottomonium barely happens even in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ TeV., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

Control barrier functions (CBFs) play a critical role in the design of safe optimization-based controllers for control-affine systems. Given a CBF associated with a desired ``safe'' set, the typical approach consists in embedding CBF-based constraints into the optimization problem defining the control law to enforce forward invariance of the safe set. While this approach effectively guarantees safety for a given CBF, the CBF-based control law can introduce undesirable equilibrium points (i.e., points that are not equilibria of the original system); open questions remain on how the choice of CBF influences the number and locations of undesirable equilibria and, in general, the dynamics of the closed-loop system. This paper investigates how the choice of CBF impacts the dynamics of the closed-loop system and shows that: (i) The CBF does not affect the number, location, and (local) stability properties of the equilibria in the interior of the safe set; (ii) undesirable equilibria only appear on the boundary of the safe set; and, (iii) the number and location of undesirable equilibria for the closed-loop system do not depend of the choice of the CBF. Additionally, for the well-established safety filters and controllers based on both CBF and control Lyapunov functions (CLFs), we show that the stability properties of equilibria of the closed-loop system are independent of the choice of the CBF and of the associated extended class-K function.

We study the generation of gravitational waves (GWs) during a first-order cosmological phase transition (PT) using the recently introduced Higgsless approach to numerically evaluate the fluid motion induced by the PT. We present for the first time spectra from strong first-order PTs ($\alpha = 0.5$), alongside weak ($\alpha = 0.0046$) and intermediate ($\alpha = 0.05$) transitions previously considered in the literature. We test the regime of applicability of the stationary source assumption, characteristic of the sound-shell model, and show that it agrees with our numerical results when the kinetic energy, sourcing GWs, does not decay with time. However, we find in general that for intermediate and strong PTs, the kinetic energy in our simulations decays following a power law in time, and provide a theoretical framework that extends the stationary assumption to one that allows to include the time evolution of the source. This decay of the kinetic energy, potentially determined by non-linear dynamics and hence, related to the production of vorticity, modifies the usually assumed linear growth with the source duration to an integral over time of the kinetic energy fraction, effectively reducing the growth rate. We validate the novel theoretical model with the results of our simulations covering a broad range of wall velocities. Previous research on the Adiar BDD package has been successful at designing algorithms capable of handling large Binary Decision Diagrams (BDDs) stored in external memory. To do so, it uses consecutive sweeps through the BDDs to resolve computations. Yet, this approach has kept algorithms for multi-variable quantification, the relational product, and variable reordering out of its scope. In this work, we address this by introducing the nested sweeping framework. Here, multiple concurrent sweeps pass information between eachother to compute the result. We have implemented the framework in Adiar and used it to create a new external memory multi-variable quantification algorithm. Compared to conventional depth-first implementations, Adiar with nested sweeping is able to solve more instances of our benchmarks and/or solve them faster., Comment: 26 pages, 14 figures, 2 tables

The NANOGrav 15-year data provides compelling evidence for a stochastic gravitational-wave (GW) background at nanohertz frequencies. The simplest model-independent approach to characterizing the frequency spectrum of this signal consists in a simple power-law fit involving two parameters: an amplitude A and a spectral index \gamma. In this paper, we consider the next logical step beyond this minimal spectral model, allowing for a running (i.e., logarithmic frequency dependence) of the spectral index, \gamma_run(f) = \gamma + \beta \ln(f/f_ref). We fit this running-power-law (RPL) model to the NANOGrav 15-year data and perform a Bayesian model comparison with the minimal constant-power-law (CPL) model, which results in a 95% credible interval for the parameter \beta consistent with no running, \beta \in [-0.80,2.96], and an inconclusive Bayes factor, B(RPL vs. CPL) = 0.69 +- 0.01. We thus conclude that, at present, the minimal CPL model still suffices to adequately describe the NANOGrav signal; however, future data sets may well lead to a measurement of nonzero \beta. Finally, we interpret the RPL model as a description of primordial GWs generated during cosmic inflation, which allows us to combine our results with upper limits from big-bang nucleosynthesis, the cosmic microwave background, and LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

This paper proposes a control design approach for stabilizing nonlinear control systems. Our key observation is that the set of points where the decrease condition of a control Lyapunov function (CLF) is feasible can be regarded as a safe set. By leveraging a nonsmooth version of control barrier functions (CBFs) and a weaker notion of CLF, we develop a control design that forces the system to converge to and remain in the region where the CLF decrease condition is feasible. We characterize the conditions under which our controller asymptotically stabilizes the origin or a small neighborhood around it, even in the cases where it is discontinuous. We illustrate our design in various examples.

CNOT optimization plays a significant role in noise reduction for Quantum Circuits. Several heuristic and exact approaches exist for CNOT optimization. In this paper, we investigate more complicated variations of optimal synthesis by allowing qubit permutations and handling layout restrictions. We encode such problems into Planning, SAT, and QBF. We provide optimization for both CNOT gate count and circuit depth. For experimental evaluation, we consider standard T-gate optimized benchmarks and optimize CNOT sub-circuits. We show that allowing qubit permutations can further reduce up to 56% in CNOT count and 46% in circuit depth. In the case of optimally mapped circuits under layout restrictions, we observe a reduction up to 17% CNOT count and 19% CNOT depth., Comment: 9 pages, 12 tables

We construct functorial Igusa stacks for all Hodge-type Shimura varieties, proving a conjecture of Scholze and extending earlier results of the fourth-named author for PEL-type Shimura varieties. Using the Igusa stack, we construct a sheaf on $\mathrm{Bun}_G$ that controls the cohomology of the corresponding Shimura variety. We use this sheaf and the spectral action of Fargues-Scholze to prove a compatibility between the cohomology of Shimura varieties of Hodge type and the semisimple local Langlands correspondence of Fargues-Scholze, generalizing the Eichler-Shimura relation of Blasius-Rogawski to arbitrary level at $p$. When the given Shimura variety is proper, we show moreover that the sheaf is perverse, which allows us to prove new torsion vanishing results for the cohomology of Shimura varieties., Comment: 121 pages, comments welcome!

This paper studies the dynamical properties of closed-loop systems obtained from control barrier function-based safety filters. We provide a sufficient and necessary condition for the existence of undesirable equilibria and show that the Jacobian matrix of the closed-loop system evaluated at an undesirable equilibrium always has a nonpositive eigenvalue. In the special case of linear planar systems and ellipsoidal obstacles, we give a complete characterization of the dynamical properties of the corresponding closed-loop system. We show that for underactuated systems, the safety filter always introduces a single undesirable equilibrium, which is a saddle-point. We prove that all trajectories outside the global stable manifold of such equilibrium converge to the origin. In the fully actuated case, we discuss how the choice of nominal controller affects the stability properties of the closed-loop system. Various simulations illustrate our results.

We study the system size dependence of heavy quark (HQ) observables at a center of mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02$ TeV to explore whether it can provide further constraints on the physical processes which are involved: energy loss of HQs in the quark gluon plasma (QGP), hadronization and hadronic rescattering. We use the EPOS4HQ approach to study p-p and 0-10\% central O-O, Ar-Ar, Kr-Kr and Pb-Pb reactions and investigate in detail the momentum change of heavy quarks from creation until their detection as part of a hadron as well as the enhancement of heavy baryon production at low $p_T$. We investigate furthermore the origin and the system size dependence of the azimuthal correlations between the heavy quark $Q$ and the heavy antiquark $\bar Q$ and how one can bypass the problem that correlations are washed out due to the combinatorial background. We conclude that a systematic study of the system size dependence of the momentum loss allows to separate the momentum loss due to the passage through the QGP from the momentum change due to hadronization and the $Q\bar Q$ correlations allow to gain inside into the different pQCD processes in which the heavy quarks are created.

Pulsar-timing-array experiments have reported evidence for a stochastic background of nanohertz gravitational waves consistent with the signal expected from a population of supermassive--black-hole binaries. Those analyses assume power-law spectra for intrinsic pulsar noise and for the background, as well as a Hellings--Downs cross-correlation pattern among the gravitational-wave--induced residuals across pulsars. These assumptions are idealizations that may not be realized in actuality. We test them in the NANOGrav 15 yr data set using Bayesian posterior predictive checks: after fitting our fiducial model to real data, we generate a population of simulated data-set replications, and use them to assess whether the optimal-statistic significance, inter-pulsar correlations, and spectral coefficients assume extreme values for the real data when compared to the replications. We confirm that the NANOGrav 15 yr data set is consistent with power-law and Hellings--Downs assumptions. We also evaluate the evidence for the stochastic background using posterior-predictive versions of the frequentist optimal statistic and of Bayesian model comparison, and find comparable significance (3.2\ $\sigma$ and 3\ $\sigma$ respectively) to what was previously reported for the standard statistics. We conclude with novel visualizations of the reconstructed gravitational waveforms that enter the residuals for each pulsar. Networks of coupled oscillators can exhibit a wide range of complex dynamical behavior, from complete synchronization to chimera and chaotic states. Here we analyze the dynamics of networks of populations of heterogeneous mean-field coupled Kuramoto-Sakaguchi oscillators and show that the instability that leads to chimera states in a simple two-population model also leads to extensive chaos in large networks of coupled populations. Formally, the system consists of a complex network of interacting oscillator populations whose mesoscopic behavior evolves according to the Ott-Antonsen equations. By considering identical parameters across populations, the system contains a manifold of homogeneous solutions where all populations behave identically. Stability analysis of these homogeneous states provided by the Master Stability Function shows that non-trivial dynamics might emerge on a wide region of the parameter space for arbitrary network topologies. As examples, we first revisit the two-population case, and provide a complete bifurcation diagram. Then, we investigate the emergent dynamics in large ring and Erd\"os-R\'enyi networks. In both cases, transverse instabilities lead to extensive space-time chaos, i.e., irregular regimes whose complexity scales linearly with the system size. In summary, our work provides a unified analytical framework to understand the emergent dynamics of networks of Kuramoto populations, from chimera states to robust high-dimensional chaos.

We obtain a quantitative star formation history (SFH) of a shell-like structure ('shell') located in the northeastern part of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We use the Survey of the MAgellanic Stellar History (SMASH) to derive colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), reaching below the oldest main-sequence turnoff, from which we compute the SFHs with CMD fitting techniques. We present, for the first time, a novel technique that uses red clump (RC) stars from the CMDs to assess and account for the SMC's line-of-sight depth effect present during the SFH derivation. We find that accounting for this effect recovers a more accurate SFH. We quantify a 7 kpc line-of-sight depth present in the CMDs, in good agreement with depth estimates from RC stars in the northeastern SMC. By isolating the stellar content of the northeastern shell and incorporating the line-of-sight depth into our calculations, we obtain an unprecedentedly detailed SFH. We find that the northeastern shell is primarily composed of stars younger than 500 Myrs, with significant star formation enhancements around 250 Myr and 450 Myr. These young stars are the main contributors to the shell's structure. We show synchronicity between the northeastern shell's SFH with the Large Magellanic Cloud's (LMC) northern arm, which we attribute to the interaction history of the SMC with the LMC and the Milky Way (MW) over the past 500 Myr. Based on the rate of change of its orbital period, PSR J2043+1711 has a substantial peculiar acceleration of 3.5 $\pm$ 0.8 mm/s/yr, which deviates from the acceleration predicted by equilibrium Milky Way models at a $4\sigma$ level. The magnitude of the peculiar acceleration is too large to be explained by disequilibrium effects of the Milky Way interacting with orbiting dwarf galaxies ($\sim$1 mm/s/yr), and too small to be caused by period variations due to the pulsar being a redback. We identify and examine two plausible causes for the anomalous acceleration: a stellar flyby, and a long-period orbital companion. We identify a main-sequence star in \textit{Gaia} DR3 and Pan-STARRS DR2 with the correct mass, distance, and on-sky position to potentially explain the observed peculiar acceleration. However, the star and the pulsar system have substantially different proper motions, indicating that they are not gravitationally bound. However, it is possible that this is an unrelated star that just happens to be located near J2043+1711 along our line of sight (chance probability of 1.6\%). Therefore, we also constrain possible orbital parameters for a circumbinary companion in a hierarchical triple system with J2043+1711; the changes in the spindown rate of the pulsar are consistent with an outer object that has an orbital period of 80 kyr, a companion mass of 0.3 $M_\odot$ (indicative of a white dwarf or low-mass star), and a semi-major axis of 2000 AU. Continued timing and/or future faint optical observations of J2043+1711 may eventually allow us to differentiate between these scenarios.

Depression has proven to be a significant public health issue, profoundly affecting the psychological well-being of individuals. If it remains undiagnosed, depression can lead to severe health issues, which can manifest physically and even lead to suicide. Generally, Diagnosing depression or any other mental disorder involves conducting semi-structured interviews alongside supplementary questionnaires, including variants of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) by Clinicians and mental health professionals. This approach places significant reliance on the experience and judgment of trained physicians, making the diagnosis susceptible to personal biases. Given that the underlying mechanisms causing depression are still being actively researched, physicians often face challenges in diagnosing and treating the condition, particularly in its early stages of clinical presentation. Recently, significant strides have been made in Artificial neural computing to solve problems involving text, image, and speech in various domains. Our analysis has aimed to leverage these state-of-the-art (SOTA) models in our experiments to achieve optimal outcomes leveraging multiple modalities. The experiments were performed on the Extended Distress Analysis Interview Corpus Wizard of Oz dataset (E-DAIC) corpus presented in the Audio/Visual Emotion Challenge (AVEC) 2019 Challenge. The proposed solutions demonstrate better results achieved by Proprietary and Open-source Large Language Models (LLMs), which achieved a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) score of 3.98 on Textual Modality, beating the AVEC 2019 challenge baseline results and current SOTA regression analysis architectures. Additionally, the proposed solution achieved an accuracy of 71.43% in the classification task. We introduce the notion of a naive global 2-ring: a functor from the opposite of the $\infty$-category of global spaces to presentably symmetric monoidal stable $\infty$-categories. By passing to global sections, every naive global 2-ring decategorifies to a multiplicative cohomology theory on global spaces, i.e. a naive global ring. We suggest when a naive global 2-ring deserves to be called \emph{genuine}. As evidence, we associate to such a global 2-ring a family of equivariant cohomology theories which satisfy a version of the change of group axioms introduced by Ginzburg, Kapranov and Vasserot. We further show that the decategorified multiplicative global cohomology theory associated to a genuine global $2$-ring canonically refines to an $\mathbb{E}_\infty$-ring object in global spectra. As we show, two interesting examples of genuine global 2-rings are given by quasi-coherent sheaves on the torsion points of an oriented spectral elliptic curve and Lurie's theory of tempered local systems. This work delivers a novel user-server authentication procedure exploiting the features of maximally entangled pairs in both an idealistic noiseless scenario and a moderately noisy one. Additionally, we leverage the specific features of our design, which are conveniently suited for inlaying it into the well known BB84 quantum communication protocol. We first define a trivial extension of our initial proposal allowing for such task (symmetric scheme) to then come up with what we denote as asymmetric scheme, better matching practicality. Furthermore, a realistic simulation of the user-server authentication protocol has been achieved by employing a noisy model for both transmission and storage, the latter relying on cavity-enhanced atomic-frequency comb (AFC) memories. While in a noiseless scenario our proposal is ensured to be airtight, considering a certain degree of noise poses a challenge when aiming to actually implement it. We have implemented a deep neural network to distinguish legitimate users from forgery attempts, outperforming a mere statistical approach designed for the same task. Such method achieved a success rate of 0.75 with storage times of $1$ $\mu s$ and a user-server distance of $10$ km., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Cutting plane methods are a fundamental approach for solving integer linear programs (ILPs). In each iteration of such methods, additional linear constraints (cuts) are introduced to the constraint set with the aim of excluding the previous fractional optimal solution while not affecting the optimal integer solution. In this work, we explore a novel approach within cutting plane methods: instead of only adding new cuts, we also consider the removal of previous cuts introduced at any of the preceding iterations of the method under a learnable parametric criteria. We demonstrate that in fundamental combinatorial optimization settings such cut removal policies can lead to significant improvements over both human-based and machine learning-guided cut addition policies even when implemented with simple models., Comment: International Conference on Machine Learning

Cosmic rays travelling through interstellar space have their propagation directions repeatedly scattered by fluctuating interstellar magnetic fields. The nature of this scattering is a major unsolved problem in astrophysics, one that has resisted solution largely due to a lack of direct observational constraints on the scattering rate. Here we show that very high-energy $\gamma$-ray emission from the globular cluster Terzan 5, which has unexpectedly been found to be displaced from the cluster, presents a direct probe of this process. We show that this displacement is naturally explained by cosmic rays accelerated in the bow shock around the cluster propagating a finite distance before scattering processes re-orient enough of them towards Earth to produce a detectable $\gamma$-ray signal. The angular distance between the cluster and the signal places tight constraints on the scattering rate, which we show are consistent with a model whereby scattering is primarily due to excitation of magnetic waves by the cosmic rays themselves. Motivated by the key role of control barrier functions (CBFs) in assessing safety and enabling the synthesis of safe controllers in nonlinear control systems, this paper presents a suite of converse results on CBFs. Given any safe set, we first identify a set of general sufficient conditions which guarantee the existence of a CBF. Our technical analysis also enables us to define an extended notion of CBF which is always guaranteed to exist if the set is safe. We next turn our attention to the problem of joint safety and stability, and give conditions under which the notions of control Lyapunov-barrier function (CLBF) and compatible control Lyapunov function (CLF) and CBF pair are guaranteed to exist. Finally, we identify conditions under which a CLBF and a compatible CLF-CBF pair can be constructed from a non-compatible CLF-CBF pair. Throughout the paper, we intersperse different examples and counterexamples to motivate our results and position them within the state of the art.

Pulsar timing array experiments have recently uncovered evidence for a nanohertz gravitational wave background by precisely timing an ensemble of millisecond pulsars. The next significant milestones for these experiments include characterizing the detected background with greater precision, identifying its source(s), and detecting continuous gravitational waves from individual supermassive black hole binaries. To achieve these objectives, generating accurate and precise times of arrival of pulses from pulsar observations is crucial. Incorrect polarization calibration of the observed pulsar profiles may introduce errors in the measured times of arrival. Further, previous studies (e.g., van Straten 2013; Manchester et al. 2013) have demonstrated that robust polarization calibration of pulsar profiles can reduce noise in the pulsar timing data and improve timing solutions. In this paper, we investigate and compare the impact of different polarization calibration methods on pulsar timing precision using three distinct calibration techniques: the Ideal Feed Assumption (IFA), Measurement Equation Modeling (MEM), and Measurement Equation Template Matching (METM). Three NANOGrav pulsars-PSRs J1643$-$1224, J1744$-$1134, and J1909$-$3744-observed with the 800 MHz and 1.5 GHz receivers at the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) are utilized for our analysis. Our findings reveal that all three calibration methods enhance timing precision compared to scenarios where no polarization calibration is performed. Additionally, among the three calibration methods, the IFA approach generally provides the best results for timing analysis of pulsars observed with the GBT receiver system. We attribute the comparatively poorer performance of the MEM and METM methods to potential instabilities in the reference noise diode coupled to the receiver and temporal variations in the profile of the reference pulsar, respectively., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, submitted to Astrophysical Journal

Silver-based chalcohalide anti-perovskites (CAP), Ag$_{3}$BC (B = S, Se; C = Cl, Br, I), represent an emerging family of energy materials with intriguing optoelectronic, vibrational and ionic transport properties. However, the structural features and phase stability of CAP remain poorly investigated to date, hindering their fundamental understanding and potential integration into technological applications. Here we employ theoretical first-principles methods based on density functional theory to fill this knowledge gap. Through crystal structure prediction techniques, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, and quasi-harmonic free energy calculations, we unveil a series of previously overlooked energetically competitive phases and temperature-induced phase transitions for all CAP. Specifically, we identify a new cubic $P2_{1}3$ structure as the stable phase of all CAP containing S both at zero temperature and $T \neq 0$ K conditions. Consequently, our calculations suggest that the cubic $Pm\overline{3}m$ phase identified in room-temperature X-ray diffraction experiments is likely to be metastable. Furthermore, for CAP containing Se, we propose different orthorhombic ($Pca2_{1}$ and $P2_{1}2_{1}2_{1}$) and cubic ($I2_{1}3$) structures as the ground-state phases and reveal several phase transformations induced by temperature. This theoretical investigation not only identifies new candidate ground-state phases and solid-solid phase transformations for all CAP but also provides insights into potential stability issues affecting these highly anharmonic superionic materials., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures

Conversational tones -- the manners and attitudes in which speakers communicate -- are essential to effective communication. Amidst the increasing popularization of Large Language Models (LLMs) over recent years, it becomes necessary to characterize the divergences in their conversational tones relative to humans. However, existing investigations of conversational modalities rely on pre-existing taxonomies or text corpora, which suffer from experimenter bias and may not be representative of real-world distributions for the studies' psycholinguistic domains. Inspired by methods from cognitive science, we propose an iterative method for simultaneously eliciting conversational tones and sentences, where participants alternate between two tasks: (1) one participant identifies the tone of a given sentence and (2) a different participant generates a sentence based on that tone. We run 100 iterations of this process with human participants and GPT-4, then obtain a dataset of sentences and frequent conversational tones. In an additional experiment, humans and GPT-4 annotated all sentences with all tones. With data from 1,339 human participants, 33,370 human judgments, and 29,900 GPT-4 queries, we show how our approach can be used to create an interpretable geometric representation of relations between conversational tones in humans and GPT-4. Automation of hydraulic material handling machinery is currently limited to semi-static pick-and-place cycles. Dynamic throwing motions which utilize the passive joints, can greatly improve time efficiency as well as increase the dumping workspace. In this work, we use Reinforcement Learning (RL) to design dynamic controllers for material handlers with underactuated arms as commonly used in logistics. The controllers are tested both in simulation and in real-world experiments on a 12-ton test platform. The method is able to exploit the passive joints of the gripper to perform dynamic throwing motions. With the proposed controllers, the machine is able to throw individual objects to targets outside the static reachability zone with good accuracy for its practical applications. The work demonstrates the possibility of using RL to perform highly dynamic tasks with heavy machinery, suggesting a potential for improving the efficiency and precision of autonomous material handling tasks., Comment: Accepted by IEEE IROS 2024

Crystallization processes at the mesoscopic scale, where faceted, dendritic growth, and multigrain formation can be observed, are of particular interest within materials science and metallurgy. These processes are highly nonlinear, stochastic, and sensitive to small perturbations of system parameters and initial conditions. Methods for the simulation of these processes have been developed using discrete numerical models, but these are computationally expensive. This work aims to scale crystal growth simulation with a machine learning emulator. Specifically, autoregressive latent variable models are well suited for modeling the joint distribution over system parameters and the crystallization trajectories. However, successfully training such models is challenging due to the stochasticity and sensitivity of the system. Existing approaches consequently fail to produce diverse and faithful crystallization trajectories. In this paper, we introduce the Crystal Growth Neural Emulator (CGNE), a probabilistic model for efficient crystal growth emulation at the mesoscopic scale that overcomes these challenges. We validate CGNE results using the morphological properties of the crystals produced by numerical simulation. PSR J0837-2454 is a young 629 ms radio pulsar whose uncertain distance has important implications. A large distance would place the pulsar far out of the Galactic plane and suggest it is the result of a runaway star, while a short distance would mean the pulsar is extraordinarily cold. Here we present further radio observations and the first deep X-ray observation of PSR J0837-2454. Data from the Parkes Murriyang telescope show flux variations over short and long timescales and also yield an updated timing model, while the position and proper motion (and, less strongly, parallax) of the pulsar are constrained by a number of low-significance detections with the Very Long Baseline Array. XMM-Newton data enable detection of X-ray pulsations for the first time from this pulsar and yield a spectrum that is thermal and blackbody-like, with a cool blackbody temperature ~70 eV or atmosphere temperature ~50 eV, as well as a small hotspot. The spectrum also indicates the pulsar is at a small distance of <~1 kpc, which is compatible with the marginal VLBA parallax constraint that favours a distance of >~330 pc. The low implied luminosity (~7.6x10^31 erg s^-1 at 0.9 kpc) suggests PSR J0837-2454 has a mass high enough that fast neutrino emission from direct Urca reactions operates in this young star and points to a nuclear equation of state that allows for direct Urca reactions at the highest densities present in neutron star cores., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures; published in PASA; style change to better match published version

Pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) are designed to detect low-frequency gravitational waves (GWs). GWs induce achromatic signals in PTA data, meaning that the timing delays do not depend on radio-frequency. However, pulse arrival times are also affected by radio-frequency dependent "chromatic" noise from sources such as dispersion measure (DM) and scattering delay variations. Furthermore, the characterization of GW signals may be influenced by the choice of chromatic noise model for each pulsar. To better understand this effect, we assess if and how different chromatic noise models affect achromatic noise properties in each pulsar. The models we compare include existing DM models used by NANOGrav and noise models used for the European PTA Data Release 2 (EPTA DR2). We perform this comparison using a subsample of six pulsars from the NANOGrav 15 yr data set, selecting the same six pulsars as from the EPTA DR2 six-pulsar dataset. We find that the choice of chromatic noise model noticeably affects the achromatic noise properties of several pulsars. This is most dramatic for PSR J1713+0747, where the amplitude of its achromatic red noise lowers from $\log_{10}A_{\text{RN}} = -14.1^{+0.1}_{-0.1}$ to $-14.7^{+0.3}_{-0.5}$, and the spectral index broadens from $\gamma_{\text{RN}} = 2.6^{+0.5}_{-0.4}$ to $\gamma_{\text{RN}} = 3.5^{+1.2}_{-0.9}$. We also compare each pulsar's noise properties with those inferred from the EPTA DR2, using the same models. From the discrepancies, we identify potential areas where the noise models could be improved. These results highlight the potential for custom chromatic noise models to improve PTA sensitivity to GWs.

The Pristine-\textit{Gaia} synthetic catalogue provides reliable photometric metallicities for $\sim$30 million FGK stars using the Pristine survey model and Gaia XP spectra. We perform the first low-to-medium-resolution spectroscopic follow-up of bright (G<15) and distant (up to 35 kpc) very and extremely metal-poor (V/EMP, [Fe/H]<-2.5) red giant branch stars from this. We use Isaac Newton Telescope/Intermediate Dispersion Spectrograph (INT/IDS) observations centred around the calcium triplet region ideal for V/EMP stars. We find that 76\% of our stars indeed have [Fe/H]<-2.5 with these inferred spectroscopic metallicities and only 3\% are outliers with [Fe/H] > -2.0. We report a success rate of 77\% and 38\% in finding stars with [Fe/H]<-2.5 and -3.0 respectively. This will allow for 10,000-20,000 homogeneously analysed EMP stars using the WEAVE survey follow-up of Pristine EMP candidates. We associate 20\%, 46\%, and 34\% of the stars to be confined to the disc plane, or to have inner and outer halo orbits, respectively. We also associate these V/EMP stars to known accretion events such as Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage (GES), LMS-1/Wukong, Thamnos, Helmi streams, Sagittarius, Sequoia, etc. For the stars that orbit close to the disc plane, we find that the prograde region with low vertical action is overdense with a significance of 4$\sigma$ as compared to its retrograde counterpart. We also find three new (brightest) members of the most metal-poor stellar stream, C-19, one of which is 50$^\circ$ away from the main body of the stream. Our measured mean metallicity, velocity dispersion, and stream width are consistent with the literature, but our results favour a higher distance ($\sim$21.5 kpc) for the stream. The problems of quantum state preparation and matrix block-encoding are ubiquitous in quantum computing: they are crucial parts of various quantum algorithms for the purpose for initial state preparation as well as loading problem relevant data. We first present an algorithm based on QRS that prepares a quantum state $|\psi_f\rangle \propto \sum^N_{x=1} f(x)|x\rangle$. When combined with efficient reference states the algorithm reduces the cost of quantum state preparation substantially, if certain criteria on $f$ are met. When the preparation of the reference state is not the dominant cost, and the function $f$ and relevant properties are efficiently computable or provided otherwise with cost $o(N)$, the QRS-based method outperforms the generic state preparation algorithm, which has cost $O(N)$. We demonstrate the detailed performance (in terms of the number of Toffoli gates) of the QRS-based algorithm for quantum states commonly appearing in quantum applications, e.g., those with coefficients that obey power law decay, Gaussian, and hyperbolic tangent, and compare it with other methods. Then, we adapt QRS techniques to the matrix block-encoding problem and introduce a QRS-based algorithm for block-encoding a given matrix $A = \sum_{ij} A_{ij} |i\rangle \langle j|$. We work out rescaling factors for different access models, which encode how the information about the matrix is provided to the quantum computer. We exemplify these results for a particular Toeplitz matrix with elements $A_{{\mathbf{ij}}}= 1/\|{\mathbf{i}}-{\mathbf{j}}\|^2$, which appears in quantum chemistry, and PDE applications, e.g., when the Coulomb interaction is involved. Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs) or drones become more and more commercially available and cheap. There has been much emphasis on developing and deploying Counter-UAS systems (UASs) with Detection Tracking and Identification (DTI) solutions. However, the capabilities of these systems are hard to benchmark. Performance claims of these systems are currently not supported by evidence. In addition, no standard test methodologies are available for these DTI systems and different test methodologies make comparison of these systems hard or impossible. We report on the definition, development and verification of an objective-driven test method and corresponding comparative performance evaluation for commercial DTI solutions for C-UASs. The developed methodology is based on end-user scenarios that are operationally relevant. The test methodology is based on a generic DTI system lay-out and is detailed towards detection, tracking and identification, taking into account contextual information and end-user input. The comparative performance evaluation is developed to enable the use of the methodology in a relevant environment, thereby taking into account any potential environmental aspect that might influence DTI system performance. Validation of the work in a relevant environment has been done in three operational trials.
