ABSTRACT Dielectric barrier discharge ionization (DBDI) sources, employing low‐temperature plasma, have emerged as sensitive and efficient ionization tools with various atmospheric pressure ionization processes. In this review, we summarize a historical overview of the development of DBDI, highlighting key principles of gas‐phase ion chemistry and the mechanisms underlying the ionization processes within the DBDI source. These processes start with the formation of reagent ions or metastable atoms from the discharge gas, which depends on the nature of the gas (helium, nitrogen, air) and on the presence of water vapor or other compounds or dopants. The processes of ionizing the analyte molecules are summarized, including Penning ionization, electron transfer, proton transfer and ligand switching from secondary hydrated hydronium ions. Presently, the DBDI‐MS methods face a challenge in the accurate quantification of gaseous analytes, limiting its broader application in biological, environmental, and medical realms where relative quantification using standards is inherently complex for gaseous matrices. The gas phase reactivity of the radical cation isomers H2CNH˙+ (methanimine) and HCNH2˙+ (aminomethylene) with propene (CH3CHCH2) has been investigated by measuring absolute reactive cross sections and product branching ratios, under single collision conditions, as a function of collision energy (in the range ∼0.07–11.80 eV) using guided ion beam mass spectrometry coupled with VUV photoionization for selective isomer generation. Experimental results have been merged with theoretical calculations to elucidate reaction pathways and structures of products. The H2CNH˙+ isomer is over a factor two more reactive than HCNH2˙+. A major channel from both isomers is production of protonated methanimine CH2NH2+via hydrogen-atom transfer reaction but, while H2CNH˙+ additionally gives charge and proton transfer products, the HCNH2˙+ isomer leads instead to protonated vinylimine CH2CHCHNH2+, produced alongside CH3˙ radicals. The reactions have astrochemical implications in the build up of chemical complexity in both the interstellar medium and the hydrocarbon-rich atmospheres of planets and satellites. The selected ice nanoparticle accelerator, SELINA, was used to prepare beams of single ice particles with positive or negative charge. Positively charged particles were prepared from deionized water and 0.05–0.2 molar solutions of sodium chloride in water, and negatively charged ice particles were generated from water without salt. Depending on the electrospray source configuration, the measured particles vary from 50 to 1000 nm in diameter. The kinetic energy per charge for all particles was set to 200 eV by the collisional equilibration in quadrupoles, which resulted in primary velocities up to 600 m/s for the lowest m/z particles. The electrospray ionization and thus particle formation from SELINA become less efficient with increasing salt concentration, resulting in a lower detected particle frequency and size. Good instrument operation is achievable for concentrations below 0.2 M. After we have verified and characterized positively and negatively charged ice particles, we have combined SELINA with a target and time-of-flight spectrometer for a 'proof-of-principle' post acceleration of 120 nm particles towards hypervelocity (v ~ 3000 m/s) and detection of fragments from the particle impact (SELINA-HIMS). General conditions are discussed for the acceleration of particles between 50 and 1000 nm to velocities well above 3000 m/s with SELINA-HIMS instrument. The gas-phase reaction between the ethyl cation (C2H5+) and ethyne (C2H2) is re-investigated by measuring absolute reactive cross sections (CSs) and branching ratios (BRs) as a function of collision energy, in the thermal and hyperthermal energy range, via tandem-guided ion beam mass spectrometry under single collision conditions. Dissociative photoionization of C2H5Br using tuneable VUV radiation in the range 10.5–14.0 eV is employed to generate C2H5+, which has also allowed us to explore the impact of increasing (vibrational) excitation on the reactivity. Reactivity experiments are complemented by theoretical calculations, at the G4 level of theory, of the relative energies and structures of the most relevant stationary points on the reactive potential energy hypersurface (PES) and by mass-analyzed ion kinetic energy (MIKE) spectrometry experiments to probe the metastable decomposition from the [C4H7]+ PES and elucidate the underlying reaction mechanisms. Two main product channels have been identified at a centre-of-mass collision energy of ∼ 0.1 eV: (a) C3H3++CH4, with BR = 0.76 ± 0.05 and (b) C4H5++H2, with BR = 0.22 ± 0.02. A third channel giving C2H3+ in association with C2H4 is shown to emerge at both high internal excitation of C2H5+ and high collision energies. From CS measurements, energy-dependent total rate constants in the range 4.3 × 10 − 11 − 5.2 × 10 − 10   cm 3 · molecule − 1 · s − 1 have been obtained. Theoretical calculations indicate that both channels stem from a common covalently bound intermediate, CH3CH2CHCH+, from which barrierless and exothermic pathways exist for the production of both cyclic c−C3H3+ and linear H2CCCH+ isomers of the main product channel. For the minor C4H5+ product, two isomers are energetically accessible: the three-member cyclic isomer c−C3H2(CH3)+ and the higher energy linear structure CH2CHCCH2+, but their formation requires multiple isomerization steps and passages via transition states lying only 0.11 eV below the reagents' energy, thus explaining the smaller BR. Results have implications for the modeling of hydrocarbon chemistry in the interstellar medium and the atmospheres of planets and satellites as well as in laboratory plasmas (e.g., plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition of carbon nanotubes and diamond-like carbon films). Experiments with changes in motion geometry can provide valuable data for engineering and development purposes, allowing a better understanding of the influence of tribological factors on the performance and service life of joints. The presented subject article focused on the experimental investigation of the influence of the geometry of the movement of the friction process on the change in the tribological properties of 30CrNiMo8 steel. The friction process was carried out without the use of a lubricant in contact with a steel ball of G40 material with a diameter of 4.76 mm. The steel ball performed two types of movement on the surface of the experimental material. The first method used was ball on disc, in which the ball moved reciprocally in an oval direction at an angle of 180° on a circumferential length of 35 mm at a speed of 5 mm/s. The second method consists of the same input parameters of the measurement, with the difference that the path along which the ball moved had a linear character. The load during the experiment was set at a constant value of 50 N with 1000 repetitions. The results show that with the ball on disc method, there was an increase in wear by 147% compared to the linear test method, which was approximately a coefficient of increase in wear of 2.468. EDS analysis pointed to the occurrence of oxidative wear that affected the resulting COF values, which were lower by 8% when using the ball on disc method due to a more uniform distribution of O and C on the surface of the friction groove where these elements acted as solid microlubricants. With the ball on disc method, defects in the form of microcracks occurred, which affected the reduction in the values of the depth of the affected area of microhardness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new laboratory OrbitrapTM cell-based mass spectrometer, OLYMPIA (Orbitrap anaLYseur MultiPle IonisAtion), without a C-trap module, has been developed and constructed. The first operation of the OrbitrapTM cell-based device with the continuous ion source and without the C-trap module is reported. OLYMPIA is being developed and used as a workbench platform to test and develop technologies for the next generation of spaceborne mass spectrometers and as a laboratory instrument to perform high-resolution studies of space-relevant chemical processes. This instrument has been used to measure the quantitative composition of CO/N2/C2H4 mixtures of the same nominal mass using an electron ionization ion source. The relative abundance of ions has been measured using a short acquisition time (up to 250 ms) with a precision of better than 10% (for most abundant ions) and a mass resolution of 30,000–50,000 (full width at half maximum) over the mass range of m/z 28–86. The achieved mass accuracy of measurements is better than 20 ppm. This performance level is sufficient to resolve and identify the CO/N2/C2H4 components of the mixtures. The dynamic range and relative ion abundance measurements have been evaluated using a reference normal isotopic distribution of krypton gas. The measurement accuracy is about 10% for the 4 most abundant isotopes; 6 isotopes are detectable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
