Abstract

We investigated experimentally non-equilibrium state of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in the quantum Hall effect (QHE) regime, studying the hysteresis of magnetoresistance of a 2DEG with a constriction. The large amplitude of the hysteresis enabled us to make the consistent phenomenological description of the hysteresis. We studied the dependence on the magnetic field sweep prehistory (minor loop measurements), recovered the anhysteretic curve, and studied the time dependence of the magnetoresistance. We showed that the hysteresis of magnetoresistance of a 2DEG in the QHE regime has significant phenomenological similarities with the hysteresis of magnetization of ferromagnetic materials, showing multistability, jumps of relaxation, and having the anhysteretic curve. Nevertheless, we revealed the crucial difference, manifested itself in an unusual inverted (anti-coercive) behavior of the magnetoresistance hysteresis. The time relaxation of the hysteresis has fast and slow regimes, similar to that of non-equilibrium magnetization of a 2DEG in QHE regime pointing to their common origin. We studied the dependence of the hysteresis loop area on the lithographic width of the constriction and found the threshold value of width $\sim$1.35 $\mu$m beyond which the hysteresis is not observed. This points to the edge nature of the non-equilibrium currents (NECs) and allows us to determine the width of the NECs area ($\sim$0.5 $\mu$m). We suggest the qualitative picture of the observed hysteresis, based on non-equilibrium redistribution of the electrons among the Landau level states and assuming huge imbalance between the population of bulk and edge electronic states., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. Abstract

Background Longitudinal cohort studies provide important information about the clinical effectiveness of an intervention in the routine clinical setting, and are an opportunity to understand how a population presents for treatment and is managed. Methods INTEREST IN CD2 (NCT01753349) is a prospective, international, 3-year, longitudinal, observational study following the course of adult idiopathic cervical dystonia (CD) treated with botulinum neurotoxin type A (BoNT-A). The primary objective is to document long-term patient satisfaction with BoNT-A treatment. Here we report baseline data. Results This analysis includes 1036 subjects (67.4% of subjects were female; mean age was 54.7 years old; mean TWSTRS Total score was 31.7). BoNT-A injections were usually given in line with BoNT-A prescribing information. The most commonly injected muscles were splenius capitis (87.3%), sternocleidomastoid (82.6%), trapezius (64.3%), levator scapulae (40.9%) and semispinalis capitis (26.9%); 35.5% of subjects were injected using a guidance technique. Most subjects (87.8%) had been previously treated with BoNT-A (median interval between last pre-study injection and study baseline was 4 months); of these 84.8% reported satisfaction with BoNT-A treatment at peak effect during their previous treatment cycle and 51.5% remained satisfied at the end of the treatment. Analyses by geographical region revealed heterogeneity in the clinical characteristics and BoNT-A injection practice of CD subjects presenting for routine treatment. Conclusions These baseline analyses provide sizeable data regarding the epidemiology and clinical presentation of CD, and demonstrate an international heterogeneity of clinical practice. Future longitudinal analyses of the full 3-year study will explore how these factors impact treatment satisfaction. Abstract

The accumulation capacitance oscillations behavior in the n-InAs metal-oxide-semiconductor structures with different densities of the built-in charge (Dbc) and the interface traps (Dit) at temperature 4.2 K in the magnetic field (B) 2–10 T, directed perpendicular to the semiconductor-dielectric interface, is studied. A decrease in the oscillation frequency and an increase in the capacitance oscillation amplitude are observed with the increase in B. At the same time, for a certain surface accumulation band bending, the influence of the Rashba effect, which is expressed in the oscillations decay and breakdown, is traced. The experimental capacitance-voltage curves are in a good agreement with the numeric simulation results of the self-consistent solution of Schrödinger and Poisson equations in the magnetic field, taking into account the quantization, nonparabolicity of dispersion law, and Fermi-Dirac electron statistics, with the allowance for the Rashba effect. The Landau quantum level broadening in a two-dimensional electron gas (Lorentzian-shaped density of states), due to the electron scattering mechanism, linearly depends on the magnetic field. Abstract

Background Patients with cervical dystonia (CD) typically require regular injections of botulinum toxin to maintain symptomatic control. We aimed to document long-term patient satisfaction with CD symptom control in a large cohort of patients treated in routine practice. Methods This was a prospective, international, observational study (NCT01753349) following the course of adult CD treated with botulinum neurotoxin type A (BoNT-A) over 3 years. A comprehensive clinical assessment status was performed at each injection visit and subjects reported satisfaction in two ways: satisfaction with symptom control at peak effect and at the end of treatment cycle. Results Subject satisfaction remained relatively stable from the first to the last injection visit. At 3 years, 89.9% of subjects reported satisfaction with symptom control at peak effect and 55.6% reported satisfaction with symptom control at end of treatment cycle. By contrast, objective ratings of CD severity showed an overall reduction over 3 years. Mean ± SD Toronto Western Spasmodic Rating Scale (TWSTRS) Total scores (clinician assessed at end of treatment cycle) decreased from 31.59 ± 13.04 at baseline to 24.49 ± 12.43 at 3 years (mean ± SD reduction from baseline of − 6.97 ± 11.56 points). Tsui scale scores also showed gradual improvement; the percent of subjects with a tremor component score of 4 reduced from 12.4% at baseline to 8.1% at 3 years. Conclusions Despite objective clinical improvements over 3 years, subject satisfaction with symptom control remained relatively constant, indicating that factors other than symptom control also play a role in patient satisfaction.

30. Сonductance Quantization Features in Multichannel Quantum Point Contacts.

Abstract

A multichannel electron transport mode with independent conductance quantization in individual channels is implemented and studied in quantum point contacts with side gates. Simulation of the total conductance as the sum of quantized individual conductances reproduces the experimentally observed complex conductance dependence on the sum and difference of gate voltages in this regime. The considered model reproduces the following experimentally observed features of conductance quantization: the absence of some of the plateaus, the conductance steps equal to 4e2/h and other values different from 2e2/h, the plateaus appearing at nonmultiples of 2e2/h, the evolution of the anomalous plateaus with a change in gate voltage difference, and the low visibility of some plateaus. The study shows that a non-trivial experimentally observed conductance behaviour in quantum point contacts may originate from channel multiplicity which may not be obvious in advance. Abstract

We study ballistic electron transport in freely suspended AlAs/GaAs microstructures containing a high mobility two-dimensional electron gas with square lattice of antidots. We found that the magnetoresistance of the samples demonstrates commensurability oscillations both for the case of non-suspended and suspended devices. The temperature dependence of the commensurability oscillations is similar for both cases. However, the critical dc current, that suppresses these oscillations, in suspended samples is three times lower than in non-suspended ones. Abstract

We report on an observation of giant hysteresis of longitudinal magnetoresistance of a constriction placed in a macroscopic two-dimensional electron gas at integer filling factors. The most striking feature of observed phenomenon is the inverted form of hysteresis loops which is manifested in advanced system response to a small change of external magnetic field. We found that the resistance in the region of hysteresis loop relaxes in a stepwise manner, that is phenomenologically similar to Barkhausen jumps. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
