Intensification of the global hydrological cycle and increase in precipitation for some regions around the world, including the northern mid- to high latitudes, is expected in a changing climate. Changes in the amount of seasonal precipitation and the intensity and frequency of extreme precipitation events directly affect the magnitude of seasonal streamflows and the timing and severity of floods and droughts. In this study, the Canadian Regional Climate Model (CRCM) projected changes to streamflow characteristics (i.e., hydrologic regime, mean annual streamflows, and the timing, frequency, and magnitude of extreme flows-low and high) over selected basins in western Canada and assessment of errors associated with these characteristics in the current climate are presented. An ensemble of five current (1961-90) and five future (2041-70) simulations, corresponding to the Special Report on Emissions Scenarios (SRES) A2 scenario, are used in the assessment of projected changes; the ensemble of simulations allows better quantification of uncertainty in projected changes. Results of the study suggest an increase in the magnitude of winter streamflows and an earlier snowmelt peak for the northern basins. In addition, study of selected return levels of extreme flows suggest important changes to the timing, frequency, and magnitude of both low and high flows, with significant increases in 10-yr 15-day winter and fall low flows and 1-day high flows, for all the high-latitude west Canadian basins. PURPOSE: This study tested the hypothesis that one of the ways sports massage aids muscle recovery from exercise is by increasing muscle blood flow to improve 'lactic acid' removal. METHODS: Twelve subjects performed 2 min of strenuous isometric handgrip (IHG) exercise at 40% maximum voluntary contraction to elevate forearm muscle lactic acid. Forearm blood flow (FBF; Doppler and Echo ultrasound of the brachial artery) and deep venous forearm blood lactate and H+ concentration ([La-], [H+]) were measured every minute for 10 min post-IHG under three conditions: passive (passive rest), active (rhythmic exercise at 10% maximum voluntary contraction), and massage (effleurage and pétrissage). Arterialized [La-] and [H+] from a superficial heated hand vein was measured at baseline. RESULTS: Data are presented as mean +/- SE. Venoarterial [La-] difference ([La-]v-a) at 30 s of post-IHG was the same across conditions (passive = 6.1 +/- 0.6 mmol x L(-1), active = 5.7 +/- 0.6 mmol x L(-1), massage = 5.5 +/- 0.6 mmol x L(-1), NS), whereas FBF was greater in passive (766 +/- 101 mL x min(-1)) versus active (614 +/- 62 mL x min(-1), P = 0.003) versus massage (540 +/- 60 mL x min(-1), P < 0.0001). Total FBF area under the curve (AUC) for 10 min after handgrip was significantly higher in passive versus massage (4203 +/- 531 vs 3178 +/- 304 mL, P = 0.024) but not versus active (3584 +/- 284 mL, P = 0.217). La(-)- efflux (FBF x [La-]v-a) AUC mirrored FBF AUC (passive = 20.5 +/- 2.8 mmol vs massage = 14.7 +/- 1.6 mmol, P = 0.03, vs active = 15.4 +/- 1.9 mmol, P = 0.064). H+ efflux (FBF x [H+]v-a) was greater in passive versus massage at 30 s (2.2 +/- 0.4e(-5) vs 1.3 +/- 0.2e(-5) mmol, P < 0.001) and 1.5 min (1.0 +/- 0.2e(-5) vs 0.6 +/- 0.09e(-5) mmol, P = 0.003) after IHG. CONCLUSIONS: Massage impairs La(-) and H+ removal from muscle after strenuous exercise by mechanically impeding blood flow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Exercise elevates shear stress in the supplying conduit artery. Although this is the most relevant physiological stimulus for flow-mediated dilation (FMD), the fluctuating pattern of shear that occurs may influence the shear stress-FMD stimulus response relationship. This study tested the hypothesis that the brachial artery FMD response to a step increase in shear is influenced by the fluctuating characteristics of the stimulus, as evoked by forearm exercise. In 16 healthy subjects, we examined FMD responses to step increases in shear rate in three conditions: stable shear upstream of heat-induced forearm vasodilation (FHStable); fluctuating shear upstream of heat-induced forearm vasodilation and rhythmic forearm cuff inflation/deflation (FHFluctuating); and fluctuating shear upstream of exercise-induced forearm vasodilation (FEStep Increase). The mean increase in shear rate (± SD) was the same in all trials (FHFluctuating: 51.69 ± 15.70 s-1 FHStable: 52.16 ± 14.10 s-1 FEStep Increase: 50.14 ± 13.03 s-1 P = 0.131). However, the FHFluctuating and FEStep Increase trials resulted in a fluctuating shear stress stimulus with rhythmic high and low shear periods that were 96.18 ± 24.54 and 11.80 ± 7.30 s-1, respectively. The initial phase of FMD (phase I) was followed by a second, delayed-onset FMD and was not different between conditions (phase I: FHFluctuating: 5.63 ± 2.15%; FHStable: 5.33 ± 1.85%; FEStep Increase: 5.30 ± 2.03%; end-trial: FHFluctuating: 7.76 ± 3.40%; FHStabIe: 7.00 ± 3.03%; FEStep Increase 6.68 ± 3.04%; P = 0.196). Phase I speed also did not differ (P = 0.685). In conclusion, the endothelium transduced the mean shear when exposed to shear fluctuations created by a typical handgrip protocol. Strategies for dissemination (purposive distribution of a guideline to specific audiences) and implementation (actions to support the general public in meeting guideline recommendations/behavioural benchmarks) of national movement guidelines (physical activity (PA), sedentary behaviour, and sleep) have yet to be synthesized. The purpose of this systematic scoping review was to identify strategies for dissemination and implementation of national PA, sedentary behaviour, and/or sleep guidelines among community-dwelling adults (aged >18 years) and/or stakeholders in Canada and analogous countries. Five search approaches (e.g., published literature, grey literature, targeted web-based, custom Google, and content expert consultation) identified records (e.g., empirical studies, organizational reports, website pages, or guideline messages) that discussed and/or evaluated dissemination or implementation strategies for a prespecified list of guidelines. A modified strategy classification system was developed to chart the data. Forty-seven reports met inclusion criteria. Dissemination strategies (n = 42) were more frequently reported than implementation strategies (n = 24). Implementation strategies were more frequently evaluated (n = 13 vs. 7 dissemination strategies) and associated with positive outcomes. The 13 studies that evaluated strategies were at high or serious risk of bias. We identified limited information about the dissemination and implementation of national movement guidelines and identified strategies were rarely evaluated. Greater efforts are required to increase the impact of guidelines among the general public and stakeholders and to build the evidence base in this field. Introduction: Impaired endothelial function has been observed during and immediately following an acutely painful stimulus. However, the extent to which this persists following pain dissipation is unclear. Purpose: To determine whether painful ischemic handgrip exercise (pain task) causes impaired flow-mediated dilation (FMD) after the sensation of pain and hemodynamic responses have abated. A second purpose was to determine whether the response to pain differed with a predisposition to magnify, ruminate, and feel helpless about pain (pain catastrophizing status). Methods: Brachial artery FMD stimulated by reactive hyperemia was assessed via ultrasound in 18 (9 high catastrophizing) healthy, women (20 ± 1 years) before and 15 min after a 3 min pain task. The shear stress stimulus for FMD was estimated as shear rate (blood velocity/brachial artery diameter). Results (mean ± SD): None of the variables were significantly impacted by pain catastrophizing status and are presented pooled across group. The pain task increased pain ratings [1 ± 1-6 ± 3 (0-10 scale) ( p < 0.001)], mean arterial pressure (MAP) ( p < 0.001) and heart rate (HR) ( p < 0.001), all returning to pre-pain levels ≤2-min post-pain task (pre-pain vs. 2-min post-pain: pain rating p = 1.000; MAP p = 0.142; HR p = 0.992). The shear rate stimulus was not different between pre- and post-pain task FMD tests ( p = 0.200). FMD decreased post-pain task (10.8 ± 4.6 vs. 7.0 ± 2.7 %, p < 0.001). Conclusion: These results indicate that, regardless of pain catastrophizing status, painful ischemic handgrip exercise has a deleterious impact on endothelial function that persists after the pain sensation and hemodynamic responses have abated.
