Despite its major role as a global climate regulator, little is known about the recent evolution of the North Atlantic Ocean, especially prior to the fifties, principally because of the lack of long-term instrumental data. Moreover, the North Atlantic Ocean is undergoing rapid changes at the physical scale leading to modifications at the biological scale increasing interest to monitor the environment. The phytoplankton is the base of the ocean life and its perturbation can lead to further changes in the food chain. Recording its dynamics implies to observe both its spatial and temporal variations. This study brings forward the use of the Ba/Ca ratio from shells of the long-living bivalve Arctica islandica collected in the Northwestern Atlantic Ocean near Saint-Pierre and Miquelon (SPM) as a recorder of the past and present phytoplankton dynamics. A high inter and intra-reproducibility and synchrony between Ba/Cashell profiles were demonstrated allowing the reconstruction of a 124 years annually-resolved Ba/Cashell master chronology (from 1893 to 2016). This master chronology was positively correlated to the surface chlorophyll a measured by satellite sensor at regional (around SPM) and global scales (Northwestern Atlantic).

The rare earth element concentrations and radiogenic isotope (Sr‐Nd‐Hf) compositions measured in bulk sediment leachates, together with bulk and clay mineralogical data, from two piston cores recovered in the Canadian Beaufort (AMD0214‐02PC) and Chukchi‐Alaskan (HLY0501‐01JPC) margins were studied to investigate changes in the weathering regimes and deep water circulation during the Holocene. The coupled evolutions of the Nd and Hf isotopic compositions (expressed in epsilon units: ɛNd and ɛHf, respectively) are in good agreement with modern seawater and bulk sediment leachate data from Pacific water, Atlantic water, and the Mackenzie River. This agreement supports the idea that boundary exchange and brine formation likely play a significant role in the ɛNd and ɛHf values of the bottom waters in the western Arctic Ocean. The ɛNd and ɛHf records from the Canadian Beaufort and Chukchi‐Alaskan margins reveal changes toward more radiogenic values from the early to late Holocene. Based on the ɛNd and ɛHf records, we suggest that the unradiogenic values are not controlled by water mass provenance and mixing but rather by provenance and a change in the weathering regime in the Mackenzie and Yukon drainage basins during the early to mid‐Holocene. In contrast, the more radiogenic ɛNd and ɛHf values in the Chukchi‐Alaskan margin and the mineralogical records in the late Holocene have primarily been controlled by an increase in the contributions of seawater and detrital particles from the Bering Sea via the Bering Strait inflow, which is likely related to major changes in the Pacific Ocean‐atmospheric dynamics. -- Keywords : Western Arctic Ocean ; REE distribution ; radiogenic isotopes ; mineralogy ; Fe‐Mn oxyhydroxides ; Holocene.

Le sujet principal de cette thèse est le traceur isotopique rhénium-osmium (Re-Os). Depuis 1991, année de publication d'une technique efficace pour en faire l'analyse, grâce à la thermo-ionisation à polarité inversée, le système isotopique Re-Os a permis d'étendre les connaissances dans de nombreuses branches des géosciences. Cependant, beaucoup d'aspects du comportement chimique de ces deux éléments chalco-sidérophiles demeurent incompris, que ce soit en géochimie environnementale ou en ce qui a trait aux météorites. Ces lacunes limitent la portée des interprétations faites à partir des données Re-Os. L'objectif de la présente thèse vise à combler certaines de ces lacunes et à faire ainsi progresser l'état des connaissances du système Re-Os. A cette fin, celui-ci est comparé avec un second système isotopique, connu depuis plus longtemps, celui du plomb. Trois domaines d'application sont explorés à partir d'études de cas: le domaine "classique" des météorites, celui des apports anthropiques et enfin le domaine de la géologie environnementale et sédimentaire. Le premier chapitre porte ainsi sur la météorite de St-Robert, une chondrite de type pétrographique H5. Son système Pb-Pb a livré un âge de 4.56 Ga, soit l'âge accepté de la formation des corps rocheux du système solaire. Les résultats du système Re-Os sur des fragments rocheux présentent des perturbations par rapport à l'isochrone de l'âge de l'échantillon, comme c'est le cas dans la vaste majorité des études de chondrites rapportées dans la littérature scientifique. Nos résultats permettent d'avancer un échange de Re entre les diverses phases métalliques. Les croûtes de fusion, résultat de l'entrée atmosphérique du météore, présentent moins de perturbations que les autres fragments rocheux. Nous croyons que cela est du à l'homogénéisation des phases de divers rapports Re/Os dans la croûte, pendant la fusion de la surface du météoroïde.
