Abstract

The initial peopling of South America is a topic of intense archaeological debate. Among the most contentious issues remain the nature of the human-megafauna interaction and the possible role of humans, along with climatic change, in the extinction of several megamammal genera at the end of the Pleistocene. In this study, we present the analysis of fossil remains with cutmarks belonging to a specimen of Neosclerocalyptus (Xenarthra, Glyptodontidae), found on the banks of the Reconquista River, northeast of the Pampean region (Argentina), whose AMS 14C dating corresponds to the Last Glacial Maximum (21,090–20,811 cal YBP). Paleoenvironmental reconstructions, stratigraphic descriptions, absolute chronological dating of bone materials, and deposits suggest a relatively rapid burial event of the bone assemblage in a semi-dry climate during a wet season. Quantitative and qualitative analyses of the cut marks, reconstruction of butchering sequences, and assessments of the possible agents involved in the observed bone surface modifications indicate anthropic activities. Our results provide new elements for discussing the earliest peopling of southern South America and specifically for the interaction between humans and local megafauna in the Pampean region during the Last Glacial Maximum. Abstract

Omission surfaces represent a gap in the sedimentary record on a particular environment, constituting an important tool for basin analyses. Nevertheless, not always these surfaces constitute key sequence-stratigraphic surfaces, and their correct interpretation is highly important for the recognition of genetically related strata. Documentation and interpretation of ichnological data from stratigraphic surface can refine the sedimentological model. The Puesto El Moro Formation (lower Upper Cretaceous) in the Austral-Magallanes Basin, southern Patagonia (Argentina), shows excellent examples of several omission surfaces stacked during a transgressive context associated with the beginning of the foreland stage. Each of these surfaces, interpreted as Tidal Ravinement Surfaces, contain Thalassinoides isp. and Sinusichnus isp., which represent opportunistic colonization by crustaceans into a predominantly firm substrate. In this case study, the vertical recurrence of substrate-controlled trace fossil suites is the result of high-frequency repeated coastal conditions during the transgression; the associated surfaces, which have limited lateral extension, have low potential for correlation at basin scale. Abstract

The geological timescale before 720 Ma uses rounded absolute ages rather than specific events recorded in rocks to subdivide time. This has led increasingly to mismatches between subdivisions and the features for which they were named. Here we review the formal processes that led to the current timescale, outline rock-based concepts that could be used to subdivide pre-Cryogenian time and propose revisions. An appraisal of the Precambrian rock record confirms that purely chronostratigraphic subdivision would require only modest deviation from current chronometric boundaries, removal of which could be expedited by establishing event-based concepts and provisional, approximate ages for eon-, era- and period-level subdivisions. Our review leads to the following conclusions: (1) the current informal four-fold Archean subdivision should be simplified to a tripartite scheme, pending more detailed analysis, and (2) an improved rock-based Proterozoic Eon might comprise a Paleoproterozoic Era with three periods (early Paleoproterozoic or Skourian, Rhyacian, Orosirian), Mesoproterozoic Era with four periods (Statherian, Calymmian, Ectasian, Stenian) and a Neoproterozoic Era with four periods (pre-Tonian or Kleisian, Tonian, Cryogenian and Ediacaran). These proposals stem from a wide community and could be used to guide future development of the pre-Cryogenian timescale by international bodies.

48. The Piedras de Afilar Formation (Neoproterozoic, Uruguay):Sedimentology and provenance of a key unit for SW-Gondwana paleogeography

Abstract

The Piedras de Afilar Formation (PAFm) is a late Neoproterozoic sedimentary succession autochthonous to the Tandilia Terrane, part of the Río de la Plata Craton. It overlies with erosional unconformity a Paleoproterozoic igneous and metamorphic basement. According to facies analysis and lithostratigraphy, the PAFm is divided into three members for which detailed petrography, X-ray diffractometry and geochemistry studies were carried out: (1) the Cuchilla Alta Member, made up of yellowish-white quartz arenites and subarkoses with through, planar and hummocky cross-stratification, ripples, interference ripples and flute casts; (2) the Arroyo del Junquito Member, comprising dark grey, red and green shales and siltstones, with wavy lamination and wrinkle structures; and (3) the Arroyo de la Tuna Member, made up of grey limestones, grey to green marls, rhythmites and dark shales. Dolerite sills, up to 50 m thick, intrude the succession, and affect clay mineralogy and rare earth composition near the contact. A deepening, fining- and thining-upward sequence in a shallow marine paleoenvironment is evidenced by facies analysis. Ce anomalies are negative at the base of the Arroyo del Junquito Member and become positive up section, indicating increasingly anoxic conditions. Paleocurrents show a bimodal oblique pattern, with predominant paleocurrents to the north-east and subordinately to the east, suggesting a provenance from the west, which agree with detrital zircon interpretation. Sm–Nd analyses of shales yielded TDM model ages between 2.53 and 1.55 Ga, which indicate a mixed provenance from Paleoproterozoic units of the Río de la Plata Craton and from a proto-Andean, Mesoproterozoic belt at its western border, in accordance with available detrital zircon ages for sandstones of the PAFm.
