This article describes how a traumatic brain injury affected two Finnish elite sportsmen as related in their autobiographical books. The purpose of the article is to gain insights into how a sport-related culture (ice hockey and freeskiing) shapes the development of an athlete's post-injury life. Findings suggest that athletic identity, perception of injuries, and the meaning of disability are constructed differently in these two sport cultures, reflecting the kind of masculinity prevailing in the sport. In conclusion, not only are prevention of injuries and proper physical rehabilitation needed, but it is also essential to promote social support for injured athletes and gain an understanding of how sports as a sociocultural environment may affect the reconstruction of an injured athlete's identity after a traumatic brain injury. Youth can be described as a transitional phase for the formation of identity. As young people often hold taken-for-granted assumptions regarding their future, disability may pose a challenge for their identity development. This paper analyses the retrospectively written autobiographical narratives by three young women who became disabled during their adolescence. The structure of the narratives is approached with sociologist Arthur Frank's typology of illness narratives and identity through data-driven content analysis. This article examines the construction of identity and masculinity in two cases of disability autobiography. Retrospectively written autobiographical accounts of early-onset disability were analyzed abductively by using the model of narrative circulation (MNC), with a thematic content analysis being used to organize the data. Both narrators constructed their adult identity as men in relation to the available disability narratives and living conditions. Three intertwined dimensions regarding the construction of identity could be observed: external expectations, internal intentions, and locally situated narratives of work. The purpose of this case study was to describe the three-dimensional biomechanics of common ballet exercises in a ballet dancer with ischial tuberosity apophysitis. This was achieved by comparing kinematics between the symptomatic (i.e. ischial apophyseal symptoms) and contralateral lower limbs, as well as via reported pain. Results suggest consistent differences in movement patterns in this dancer. These differences included: 1) decreased external rotation of contralateral hip, hence a decreased hip contribution to ‘turn out’; 2) increased contralateral knee adduction and internal rotation; 3) an apparent synchronicity in the contralateral lower limb of the decreased hip external rotation and increased knee adduction; and 4) minimal use of ankle plantar/dorsiflexion movement for symptomatic side. Pain related to the left ischial apophysitis was associated with reduced amplitudes especially in fast ballet movements that required large range of motion in flexion and adduction in the left hip joint.
