We propose a new contrastive objective for learning overcomplete pixel-level features that are invariant to motion blur. Other invariances (e.g., pose, illumination, or weather) can be learned by applying the corresponding transformations on unlabeled images during self-supervised training. We showcase that a simple U-Net trained with our objective can produce local features useful for aligning the frames of an unseen video captured with a moving camera under realistic and challenging conditions. Using a carefully designed toy example, we also show that the overcomplete pixels can encode the identity of objects in an image and the pixel coordinates relative to these objects., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

We present the concept for STARI: STarlight Acquisition and Reflection toward Interferometry. If launched, STARI will be the first mission to control a 3-D CubeSat formation to the few mm-level, reflect starlight over 10s to 100s of meters from one spacecraft to another, control tip-tilt with sub-arcsecond stability, and validate end-to-end performance by injecting light into a single-mode fiber. The correction of quasi-static wavefront errors within a coronagraphic optical system will be a key challenge to overcome in order to directly image exoplanets in reflected light. These quasi-static errors are caused by mid to high-order surface errors on the optical elements as a result of manufacturing processes. Using high-order wavefront sensing and control (HOWFSC) techniques that do not introduce non-common path aberrations, the quasi-static errors can be corrected within the desired region of interest designated as the dark hole. For the future Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO), HOWFSC algorithms will be key to attaining the desired contrasts. To simulate the performance of HOWFSC with space rated processors, optical models for a 6 m class space-borne observatory and a coronagraph have been developed. Phenomena such as the Talbot effect and beamwalk are included in the simulations using combinations of ray-based modeling and end-to-end propagation techniques. After integrating the optical models with the embedded processors, simulations with realistic computation times can be performed to understand the computational hardware performance that will be needed to maintain the desired contrasts. Here, the details of the optical models are presented along with the HOWFSC methods utilized. We summarize the current best polychromatic (10 to 20 % bandwidth) contrast performance demonstrated in the laboratory by different starlight suppression approaches and systems designed to directly characterize exoplanets around nearby stars. We present results obtained by internal coronagraph and external starshade experimental testbeds using entrance apertures equivalent to off-axis or on-axis telescopes, either monolithic or segmented. For a given angular separation and spectral bandwidth, the performance of each starlight suppression system is characterized by the values of raw contrast (before image processing), off-axis (exoplanet) core throughput, and post-calibration contrast (the final 1 sigma detection limit of off-axis point sources, after image processing). To place the current laboratory results in the perspective of the future Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) mission, we simulate visible observations of a fiducial Earth/Sun twin system at 12 pc, assuming a 6m (inscribed diameter) collecting aperture and a realistic end-to-end optical throughput. The exposure times required for broadband exoearth detection (20% bandwidth around a wavelength of 0.55 microns) and visible spectroscopic observations (R=70) are then computed assuming various levels of starlight suppression performance, including the values currently demonstrated in the laboratory. Using spectroscopic exposure time as a simple metric, our results point to key starlight suppression system design performance improvements and trades to be conducted in support of HWO exoplanet science capabilities. Directly observing exoplanets with coronagraphs is impeded by the presence of speckles from aberrations in the optical path, which can be mitigated in hardware with wavefront control as well as in post-processing. This work explores using an instrument model in post-processing to separate astrophysical signals from residual aberrations in coronagraphic data. The effect of wavefront error (WFE) on the coronagraphic intensity consists of a linear contribution and a quadratic contribution. When either of the terms is much larger than the other, the instrument response can be approximated by a transfer matrix mapping WFE to detector plane intensity. From this transfer matrix, a useful projection onto instrumental modes that removes the dominant error modes can be derived. We apply this projection to synthetically generated Roman Space Telescope hybrid Lyot coronagraph (HLC) data to extract "robust observables," which can be used instead of raw data for applications such as detection testing. The projection improves planet flux ratio detection limits by about 28% in the linear regime and by over a factor of 2 in the quadratic regime, illustrating that robust observables can increase sensitivity to astrophysical signals and improve the scientific yield from coronagraphic data. While this approach does not require additional information such as observations of reference stars or modulations of a deformable mirror, it can and should be combined with these other techniques, acting as a model-informed prior in an overall post-processing strategy., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures

The Coronagraphic Debris Exoplanet Exploring Payload (CDEEP) is a Small-Sat mission concept for high contrast imaging of circumstellar disks. CDEEP is designed to observe disks in scattered light at visible wavelengths at a raw contrast level of 10^-7 per resolution element (10^-8 with post processing). This exceptional sensitivity will allow the imaging of transport dominated debris disks, quantifying the albedo, composition, and morphology of these low-surface brightness disks. CDEEP combines an off-axis telescope, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) deformable mirror, and a vector vortex coronagraph (VVC). This system will require rigorous testing and characterization in a space environment. Due to the limited number of photons, directly imaging planets requires long integration times with a coronagraphic instrument. The wavefront must be stable on the same time scale, which is often difficult in space due to thermal variations and other mechanical instabilities. In this paper, we discuss the implications on future space mission observing conditions of our recent laboratory demonstration of a dark zone maintenance (DZM) algorithm. The experiments are performed on the High-contrast imager for Complex Aperture Telescopes (HiCAT) at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI). The testbed contains a segmented aperture, a pair of continuous deformable mirrors (DMs), and a lyot coronagraph. The segmented aperture injects high order wavefront aberration drifts into the system which are then corrected by the DMs downstream via the DZM algorithm. The characterization of exoplanet atmospheres using direct imaging spectroscopy requires high-contrast over a wide wavelength range. We study a recently proposed focal plane wavefront estimation algorithm that exclusively uses broadband images to estimate the electric field. This approach therefore reduces the complexity and observational overheads compared to traditional single wavelength approaches. The electric field is estimated as an incoherent sum of monochromatic intensities with the pair-wise probing technique. A lower bound on unbiased estimates of wavefront errors (WFE) is presented for the linear regime of small perturbation and active control of a high-contrast region (dark hole). Analytical approximations and algorithms for computing the closed-loop covariance of the WFE modes are provided for discrete- and continuous-time linear WFE dynamics. Our analysis applies to both image-plane and non-common-path wavefront sensing (WFS) with Poisson-distributed measurements and noise sources (i.e., photon-counting mode). Under this assumption, we show that recursive estimation benefits from infinitesimally short exposure times, is more accurate than batch estimation and, for high-order WFE drift dynamical processes, scales better than batch estimation with amplitude and star brightness. These newly-derived contrast scaling laws are a generalization of previously known theoretical and numerical results for turbulence-driven Adaptive Optics. For space-based coronagraphs, we propose a scheme for combining models of WFE drift, low-order non-common-path WFS (LOWFS) and high-order image-plane WFS (HOWFS) into closed-loop contrast estimates. We also analyze the impact of residual low-order WFE, sensor noise, and other sources incoherent with the star, on closed-loop dark-hole maintenance and the resulting contrast. As an application example, our model suggests that the Roman Space Telescope might operate in a regime that is dominated by incoherent sources rather than WFE drift, where the WFE drift can be actively rejected throughout the observations with residuals significantly dimmer than the incoherent sources. The models proposed in this paper make possible the assessment of the closed-loop contrast of coronagraphs with combined LOWFS and HOWFS capabilities, and thus help estimate WFE stability requirements of future instruments., Comment: 33 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope Coronagraph Instrument (CGI) will be capable of characterizing exoplanets in reflected light and will demonstrate space technologies essential for future missions to take spectra of Earthlike exoplanets. As the mission and instrument move into the final stages of design, simulation tools spanning from depth of search calculators to detailed diffraction models have been created by a variety of teams. We summarize these efforts, with a particular focus on publicly available datasets and software tools. These include speckle and point-spread-function models, signal-to-noise calculators, and science product simulations (e.g. predicted observations of debris disks and exoplanet spectra). This review is intended to serve as a reference to facilitate engagement with the technical and science capabilities of the CGI instrument., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Space coronagraphs are projected to detect exoplantes that are at least 1e10 times dimmer than their host stars. Yet, the actual detection threshold depends on the instrument's wavefront stability and varies by an order of magnitude with the choice of observation strategy and post-processing method. In this paper the authors consider the performance of the previously introduced observation strategy (dark hole maintenance) and post-processing algorithm (electric field order reduction) in the presence of various realistic effects. In particular, it will be shown that under some common assumptions, the telescope's averaged pointing jitter translates into an additional light source incoherent with the residual light from the star (speckles), and that jitter "modes" can be identified in post-processing and distinguished from a planet signal. We also show that the decrease in contrast due to drift of voltages in deformable mirror actuators can be mitigated by recursive estimation of the electric field in the high-contrast region of the image (dark hole) using Electric Field Conjugation (EFC). Moreover, this can be done even when the measured intensity is broadband, as long as it is well approximated by an incoherent sum of monochromatic intensities. Finally, we assess the performance of closed-loop vs. open-loop observation scenarios through a numerical simulation of the Wide-Field Infra-Red Survey Telescope (WFIRST). In particular, we compare the post-processing factors of Angular Differential Imaging (ADI) with and without Electric Field Order Reduction (EFOR), which we extended to account for possible telescope rolls and the presence of pointing jitter. We formulate a recursive estimation problem for multiple dynamical systems coupled through a low dimensional stochastic input, and we propose an efficient sub-optimal solution. The suggested approach is an approximation of the Kalman filter that discards the off diagonal entries of the correlation matrix in its "update" step. The time complexity associated with propagating this approximate block-diagonal covariance is linear in the number of systems, compared to the cubic complexity of the full Kalman filter. The stability of the proposed block-diagonal filter and its behavior for a large number of systems are analyzed in some simple cases. It is then examined in the context of electric field estimation in a high-contrast space coronagraph, for which it was designed. In high-contrast space-based coronagraphs, one of the main limiting factors for imaging the dimmest exoplanets is the time varying nature of the residual starlight (speckles). Modern methods try to differentiate between the intensities of starlight and other sources, but none incorporate models of space-based systems which can take into account actuations of the deformable mirrors. Instead, we propose formulating the estimation problem in terms of the electric field while allowing for dithering of the deformable mirrors. Our reduced-order approach is similar to intensity-based PCA (e.g. KLIP) although, under certain assumptions, it requires a considerably lower number of modes of the electric field. Direct exoplanet imaging via coronagraphy requires maintenance of high contrast in a dark hole for lengthy integration periods. Wavefront errors that change slowly over that time accumulate and cause systematic errors in the star's Point Spread Function (PSF) which limit the achievable signal-to-noise ratio of the planet. In this paper we show that estimating the speckle drift can be achieved via intensity measurements in the dark hole together with dithering of the deformable mirrors to increase phase diversity. A scheme based on an Extended Kalman Filter and Electric Field Conjugation is proposed for maintaining the dark hole during the integration phase. For the post-processing phase, an a posteriori approach is proposed to estimate the realization of the PSF drift process and the intensity of the planet light incoherent with the speckles., Comment: 27 pages, 9 figures

In this paper, a new algorithm for extracting features from sequences of multidimensional observations is presented. The independently developed Dynamic Mode Decomposition and Matrix Pencil methods provide a least-squares model-based approach for estimating complex frequencies present in signals as well as their corresponding amplitudes. Unlike other feature extraction methods such as Fourier Transform or Autoregression which have to be computed for each sequence individually, the least-squares approach considers the whole dataset at once. It invokes order reduction methods to extract a small number of features best describing all given data, and indicate which frequencies correspond to which sequences. As an illustrative example, the new method is applied to regions of different grain orientation in a Transmission Electron Microscopy image.
